I embarked on a trip to Italy with my family, and discovered the country’s highlights at a comfortable pace. The tour was hassle-free, reliable, and they provided us with a comprehensive coverage of the country. Our tour manager paid attention to every detail and ensured that we were well taken care of. Our tour began in Italy's fashion capital, Milan, where we shopped to our heart's content. We roamed the charming city of Florence next and had the amazing opportunity to visit the Chianti vineyards and taste their aromatic blend of handmade wines. Our holiday involved visiting many iconic landmarks including the leaning tower of Pisa, the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, and many more. By the end of the holiday, we had many beautiful family photos in our albums and happy memories to cherish. Don’t just take my word for it, seize this opportunity to snag great travel packages when you attend TRF from the 19th to the 21st of August. We hope to see you at the fair!

Awa Odori Dance Festival in Tokushima JAPAN
The Awa Odori is a 400-year tradition that is held across Japan during the Obon - an annual Buddhist event commemorating one’s ancestors - season. Originating from the Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, this ageold festival focuses on honouring and remembering the souls of ancestors. Dating back to 1587, the festival originated from the drunken stupor of the citizens who drank saké and proceeded to dance in an unsteady gait. The Awa Odori is characterised by irregular steps accompanied with energetic up-tempo rhythm, whereby groups of men and women parade through the city while dancing. Various instruments such as, drums, gongs, and many other musical instruments guide the steps of the dancers. http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/

Onam INDIA
India’s biggest harvest festival is back again to celebrate Kerala’s rich culture and age-old tradition. Over a period of ten days, the people of Kerala will set aside their differences - religious affiliations, social status - and come together to mark this significant event. According to a well-known legend, this festival is celebrated to welcome the spirit of the king Mahabali. It is said that during his reign there was no caste system and everyone was of equal status. Taking place in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Onam brings together a colourful medley of dance performances, including Pulikali (the play of tigers), which is a vibrant recreational folk art performed by trained artists. The performers paint themselves as tigers and wear tiger masks before entertaining spectators. http://www.keralatourism.org/

A traditional performance
INDONESIA’S HIDDEN DISCOVERIES From well-preserved Batak houses to sarcophagi containing the bodies of former kings, the islands and villages of Indonesia offer sights that are steeped in history, tradition and culture. is known for its rows of traditional Batak houses that seem almost otherworldly, with its boat-shaped roof ridges that extend upwards. Although the sight of these historic buildings has attracted countless visitors to the village, this place is also noted for its megalithic complexes. In addition to housing impressive architecture, the village has a number of sarcophagi that serve as the final resting place for the former Sidabutar clan. Former kings also occupy the site, one worth a mention and a visit is the Tomb of King Sidabutar. The late king was the first Tomok ruler to embrace Christianity, and unlike the other sarcophagi, his sarcophagus spots a cross.
Pematang Purba
Situated on the foreshore of Lake Toba, Parapat is mostly known for being the ferry port to get across to Samosir Island. The small town doesn’t take long to explore on foot, and captivates visitors with its unique architecture and quaint buildings. Most of the buildings occupying the town are built adopting three architectural elements - traditional, modern and tropical. Besides charming visitors with it’s old structures, the town also charms travellers with its historical tours and exquisite culinary.
Pematang Purba is a village in northern Sumatra that is famous for its restored tribal houses of the Simalungun Batak chiefs. Today, these tribal houses serve as a museum and preserve the tales and stories of the past. One tribal house that stands out from the rest is the Rumah Bolon, or long house of the Batak chief. Built by the XII Chief of the Bataks, the structure once served as the king’s palace. The house is adorned with buffalo horns, which in the past, signified the supremacy of the Batak chiefs. The number of horns reflected the rank of the chief, hence more horns meant that the ruling chief at that time, had a high social standing.

SOUTH KOREA’S FAMED HISTORIC SIGHTS South Korea captivates travellers from far and wide with attractions steeped in rich history and culture.
WORDS BY: LIM HUI LING
Traditional Korean Village in Jeonju, Korea
“I started feeling as if I was journeying back in time to the Joseon dynasty”
T
here are plenty of reasons to fall in love with South Korea, from its irresistible street food to its wellpreserved historical buildings, there is something for everyone in this charming East Asian nation. Whether it’s the tranquil Deokjin Lake or the enthralling dance of the fireflies, South Korea charms its visitors with sights that are other-worldly.
Gyeonggijeon Shrine and Hanok Village
Like most die-hard Korean drama fans, I explored Gyeonggijeon Shrine feeling a slight tinge of familiarity and later found out that it was used as a filming site for many historical dramas and movies such as Princess Hours and Painter of the Wind, etc. The shrine held the only portrait of King Taejo, the founder of Joseon dynasty. Walking around Hanok Village, you can easily see people dressed in traditional Korean costumes. Looking to immerse myself in the culture and tradition of the Korean people, I popped into one of the Hanbok rental shops. I felt like an entirely different
Jeonju
Jeonju is a place that is immersed in beauty that only similar travellers who have walked down its picturesque streets can attest to. One place that offers scenic views of this city is Hanok Village. Situated in Jeonju, this village is surrounded by modern buildings that reflect the transition of time and the seamless blend of the traditional and the contemporary. The city embodies the essence of Korean culture, and preserves the rich history and tradition of the village. Jeonju is not only steeped in ancient history, but has also served as the spiritual home of the Joseon Dynasty, where the royal family that founded the dynasty originated from.
person after dressing myself with the vibrant Hanbok, and after taking a number of pictures in and around the corners of Hanok Village, I started feeling as if I was journeying back in time to the Joseon dynasty. The Hanok Village did not fail to surprise and fascinate me with its details. For instance, the traditional lacquer standing mirror and the architectural structures that are reminiscent of a Korean palace, mesmerised me with its charming antiquity. During my stay in a Hanok, the floor mattress and the buckwheat pillow I slept on, gave me an insight into the life of an aristocrat in the Joseon Dynasty. If the sights of this place isn’t enough to captivate a traveller, the food might. I had a chance to dig into some Kongnamul Gukbap, which is known to be a quick solution for a hangover. On my final day in Jeonju, I explored the city, its cultural assets and buildings such as the Korean Fan Culture Center and National Intangible Heritage Center.
Deokjin Park
Deokjin Park is a representative city park of Jeonju, which houses the iconic Deokjin Lake. Dating back to the Goryeo Dynasty, the Deokjin Lake displays an amazing spectacle of lush greenery dotted with pink lotuses on the lake. Near end of June the lake becomes an impressive attraction that draws countless visitors from near and far. Although I didn’t get to witness this breathtaking scenery, it wasn’t difficult to imagine how magnificent it will look when the lotus flowers are in full bloom.

Muju
Muju Taekwondowon I continued my journey to Muju, where I visited the Muju Taekwondowon, a Taekwondo facility situated in Muju. The facility comprises of nine buildings that incorporate education, training and research, which come together to create and showcase Taekwondo values. I made my way up the Taekwondowon Observatory Tower. I was treated to panoramic views of the surroundings, which was in my opinion, worth ascending the 700 steps to my destination. I spent the later part of my day visiting the Taekwondo Museum and watched the enthralling Taekwondo performance, before participating in a two-hour Taekwon healing therapy, where I learnt the basics of Taekwondo and practiced some self defence moves.

Muju - Bandi Land Bandi Land
The next day, I dropped by the Bandi Land in Muju, the educational space that houses an Insect Museum. We learnt that fireflies only live in clean environment and this indicated how pristine Muju really is. Fireflies are usually more “active” during August to the late September, and night tours are organised throughout this period to entertain travellers with the spellbinding performance of these fireflies. In the upcoming 20th Muju Firefly Festival from August 27 to September 4, the whole Muju region, including Bandi Land is prepared to surprise its visitors with a variety of exciting events.

Seoul
I reached the capital of South Korea, Seoul the next day. The bustling metropolis is home to high-tech subways, towering skyscrapers and notable attractions. Before immersing myself in the various sights and sounds of this sprawling metropolis, I fuelled up with a popular Korean dish, Jjamppong with Kalbi (spicy seafood noodle with beef ribs). I arrived at Korea’s largest flagship store, which is owned by a single beauty brand, Sulwhasoo. This six-storey Sulwhasoo flagship store showcases the brand’s heritage and provides a holistic and flagship-exclusive services. I ventured to the second floor, naturally gravitating towards my favourite section, the Boutique and Gift services. In addition to acquiring exclusive merchandise, visitors may also experience the prestige of entire Sulwhasoo collection and receive customised beauty counselling. As one of Seoul’s most famed attraction, the Lotte World Tower stands at an imposing height of 555 metres. Although construction of the Lotte World Tower will be completed end of this year, most of the skyscraper, especially the basement and mid-floors are complete. The 123-storey skyscraper will be South Korea’s tallest structure and the sixth tallest skyscraper in the world. I dropped by the Lotte Aquarium, located in the basement of the tower and got an up-close encounter with the friendly Beluga whale. Special thanks to Korea Tourism Organization, Jeonbuk Traditional Culture Institute, Taekwondo Promotion Foundation and Muju County for organising this fantastic trip. FAMILY VACATIONS IN OKINAWA We’ve picked a few of our favourite Okinawan experiences in hopes to inspire your next family adventure.
Family playing at the Okinawa Beach
P
lanning for a year-end family vacation can be quite the chore; you need a place that will be entertaining enough for the kids whilst giving the adults ample amount of time to unwind. Lucky for you, the island of Okinawa has got everything you need. Read on to find out where to go, what to do, and where to stay!
VISIT: Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
Visit the world-class aquarium located in the northern region of Okinawa, near Motobu. Here, you can experience the mystery of the deep blue Okinawan seas without having to dive deep into the ocean. The pride of this aquarium is its largest resident - the gigantic Whale Shark (a whopping 8.6 meters in length) - which lives in the 7,500m³ Kuroshio Tank. The world’s first successful births of manta pups in captivity also happened in this aquarium. This dimly lit exhibition is a real treat for lovers of the underwater world. Most of the light illuminating your path as you walk through the aquarium comes from the sunlight passing through the waters. As you watch schools of brightly coloured fish swim past on the right, and manta rays glide by when you look up, you can’t help but pause and be transfixed by the splendour of it all. Bring your children to the ‘Life in “Inoh”’ or touch pool, where they can gently touch 20 different species of sea cucumbers and starfish, as well as learn more about them. Stick around for the ‘Diver Show’ at Okichan Theatre to watch the star of the aquarium (a dolphin named Okichan) and its friends perform! With over 20 different facilities and even more programs at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, it will be quite the outing for the whole family!
EXPERIENCE: Bingata/Coral Dye Painting
Spend an afternoon getting creative at Shuri Ryusen! Get a hands-on experience by using a special paint and various coral fossils to create your very own unique patterned tote bag, shirt, or coasters. Shuri Ryusen provides you with primary colours so that you can mix them around to get a new colour. Before you actually start designing your item, there will be a short tutorial on how to go about coraldying. Overall, coral dying will be a quiet and cathartic experience - a pleasant and fresh addition to your family holiday itinerary. The three-story building also has a gift shop next to its workshop space so be sure to pick up little gifts to bring back home. Pick from beautifully designed scarfs, tissue covers, and even towels!

STAY: Family-Friendly Hotels
Yambaru Manabino no Mori This jungle resort is located in Yanbaru, the northern region of Okinawa. The rustic accommodation surrounded by mountains and lush forestry is a welcome change of scenery from the Singaporean city life. Because it is located in the nooks of Yanbaru, you will be able to find a whole range of thrilling activities suitable for the whole family. For families, opt for the spacious Family Rooms that can fit up to eight people when you book into this jungle lodge. The one and only restaurant at the hotel provides you with views of the mountains and the Yanbaru forest as you tuck into mouth-watering Okinawan meals - so

there is no need for a long drive out to search for eateries at the neighbouring towns. Get in touch with nature and book one of two guided trails provided by the hotel: the River Song Trail and the Accessibility Trail. The former leads you to a waterfall at the end of a one and a half hour walk whilst the latter is an easier trek that even young children and the elderly can experience. One of the most rewarding and satisfying activities would be the jungle canoe tour - travel upstream across one of the nearby dams to mini waterfalls and bask in the serenity of mother nature. Canoeing through the jungle may seem like a daunting activity, but it is extremely safe and suitable for young children (ages seven and above) as well as adults who are at a relatively adequate level of fitness. The forests of Yanbaru make up less than 0.1% of Japan’s total land area. However, they are inhabited by an unprecedented number of species that can not be found in any of the other parts in Japan. The facility aims to cultivate a spirit of eagerness and excitement for the natural environment - this is evident from the friendly and knowledgeable activity guides who provide you with fascinating facts about the region and its inhabitants before each experience!
Marine Piazza Okinawa:
Stay at the Marine Piazza Okinawa, located in the region of Motobu. Once you step into the lobby it is clear that this space is a family-friendly hotel - the first sign of it is from the spacious garden behind the hotel, home to a simple playground set. Check into one of the 49 rooms which comes with a balcony and a beautiful ocean view. The baby-blue coloured rooms are large and some of them come with Japanese-style seating areas. Situated just a short walk away is Motobu Genki Mura. This recreational facility offers Marine Sports, a Dolphin Program, a Cultural Exchange Centre, nature experiences, and kids programs! Be spoilt for choice as you pick from a range of activities: swim with friendly dolphins, soar above the waters on a flyboard, kayak to a nearby island, cruise the open waters on a jet ski, or snorkel in crystal clear waters. If you’re unsure of which activity to pick or which your children will be able to enjoy, consult the experienced guides around the vicinity! So get ready for a smashing good time on the island of Okinawa - we guarantee a holiday filled with rejuvenation and delight for both the young and old! Snowmobile Riding
Taking the snowmobile out for a ride across the vast snow-covered terrain is an activity that has grown in popularity since the first snowmobile was created. Snowmobiles not only provide a faster way to explore the snowy wilderness, but also serve as a means to travel more efficiently and effectively across the lands. The ease of use has prompted a shorter learning time, as most beginners pick up the basics of maneuvering and navigating this machine fairly quickly. Many of the resorts in the snowy regions of United States and Canada, including other parts of the US, cater to the specific needs of vacationing snowmobilers. If you are interested in riding a snowmobile, it is important that you practice safety precautions. It is a good idea to bring company or inform others of your whereabouts before embarking on a long journey or along the trails. Riders should bring along a first aid kit and proper safety gear in case of an emergency. It is also advisable for riders to inspect their equipment to make sure all of the parts are properly tightened and in proper working condition. Before leaving on your snowmobile, it is strongly advised to check for an avalanche occurring in the region.
Sledging
29 | Travel Journal | Issue 10 | August 2016
Sledging
Sledging is a worldwide winter activity generally carried out in a prone or seated position on a vehicle generically known as a sledge. Made out of wood, it is carefully crafted, and often comes with a carriage mounted upon runners. It is generally designed to go fast and straight down the hill, hence caution should be practiced when navigating sharp turns and bends. In the early days, sledging was utilised as a mode of transportation to carry passengers or goods, typically used in places where no other vehicles or mode of transportation could venture. Today, it is widely known as a recreational sport and brings marvellous fun for everyone, including children. Most sledges are handsomely designed, some even come with canvas seat covers for comfort. The first ride down a hill on a sledge is the most crucial and most difficult as it paves the path for subsequent runs. It is essential to practice safety precautions before you decide to sledge. Always ensure that you wear sensible winter clothing such as hats, gloves and mittens; and protective gear to avoid getting injured. Keep a fair distance among other riders and avoid using your hands to stop the sledge. Be sure to choose a gentle course suitable to your capability or seek advice from an expert. The thrill of sledging is undeniably satisfying. The adrenaline rush you get once you complete your course will definitely get you addicted to this winter activity.
you might even catch the incredible views of the Northern Lights in the peak winter months as you drift to sleep. Since each glass igloo is fitted with thermal glass walls and ceilings, the insulated interior keeps the room warm and toasty. Although views of the Northern Lights are not guaranteed, the hotel will ring a signaling bell to alert guests of the phenomena, when the lights appear. The hotel also includes the world’s largest smoke sauna, which comes with its own restaurant, an ice bar and a snow chapel. Whether it’s riding a snowmobile across the vast arctic region, sleeping under millions of twinkling stars or even sledding with the adorable yet strong Siberian Husky, there’s something for everyone this coming winter. Dog Sledding
As the name implies, dog sleds are sleds that are mostly pulled by dogs over ice or through snow. In the past, sled dogs were utilised as the main mode of transport by people who lived in the Arctic region. Today, people still travel using dog sleds and even hold sled dog races. Dog sledding is sometimes referred to as “mushing”, and a person who travels via dog sled is called a “musher”. Dog sled teams can travel up to a whopping 32 kph, and since long distance travel requires endurance and speed, the dogs must be at optimal health. Although dog sledding uses many breeds of dogs, the two most common breeds that are usually used are Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes. One of the most famous sled dog race is the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which takes place over the course of 15 days. Mushers and their dog teams will make their way across the 1868 kilometres of trail. Even though race conditions can be quite brutal - heavy snowstorms and wind-chill temperatures - the Iditarod remains as one of the most popular sporting event in Alaska.

Igloos
Igloos serve as a means for hunters to survive the brutal winters and to seek respite from the frigid temperatures. The compact snow can sometimes shelter up to twenty people. It comes in different sizes and is used for different purposes. Since snow is a good insulator, an igloo is able to retain the trapped heat inside the structure. Although this would cause the igloo to melt slightly, it will refreeze when it is unoccupied. The thawing and refreezing cycle results in the whole structure becoming solid ice, which will eventually make it much stronger than the original formation. If you would like to experience spending a night in an igloo without the hassle of building one from scratch, immerse yourself in a once-in-a-lifetime stay at the Kakslauttanen, a family hotel in Finland, Lapland. From its humble beginnings as a small chalet to a renowned glass igloo hotel, Kakslauttanen has become a popular destination for many looking to sleep under the stars without worrying about the elements. If you are lucky,
