EDITOR’S NOTE
Creating Your Own Journeys We are ready and raring to go with the third issue of the Travel Journal! As the year-end holidays loom around the corner, we all know that most of us are all packed and prepped to embark on the vacation that we have been dreaming of the whole of this year. Even if you have not booked yourself on a trip out of Singapore, do not start panicking as there is still plenty of time to plan. Take for instance, my trip to Taiwan back in September, details such as flight and accommodation were YIN YANG HAI finalised within a month from departure date. Spontaneity played a big part in most of that journey, from the last-minute offer for SHI-DA NIGHT MARKET flight tickets to Taiwan (which I grabbed) to deciding where to visit in Taiwan based on recommendations from the locals we met. At the end of the journey, it made me realise how important it is to plan your trip around your interests and preferences – mine eventually developed into a gastronomic hunt day and night! Indeed, my visit to Taiwan served as a poignant reminder of how easy it is to fall in love with travelling, and that personal touch is the final factor that makes every vacation the trip of your lifetime. With the successful wrap-up of the Singapore Travel Mart last month, we have come to realise how travellers are moving towards the trend of free and easy travelling. Travellers these days value flexibility in their travelling, and they want a variety of options offered to them so that they are able to decide the type of vacation that suits them best. As with any country or destination in the world, there is a whole array of things to see and do, and it is always best to do your research beforehand to help you decide what kind of journey you wish to embark on. Whether it may be an all-inclusive trip that covers the usual tourist spots, or a themed vacation that focuses on sightseeing, shopping or food, always keep in mind that unforgettable memories are formed from what speaks to your heart.

Peranakan Arts Festival 2015 SINGAPORE
Taste of Melbourne AUSTRALIA
Bon Om Tuk Water Festival CAMBODIA
A first where Peranakan culture will be expressed through theatre, music and the arts, this five-day festival will feature two new theatre productions, three seminars, free public performances and a myriad of exhibitions and artworks by Peranakan visual artistes along with a bustling bazaar with delightful Peranakan merchandise for sale. Held in conjunction with the 28th Baba Nyonya Convention, the festival will take place mainly in and around the Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall venues. Do not miss the highlight of the event – the sequel to the popular Peranakan play Bibiks Behind Bars, a musical comedy centred around a group of gambling bibiks.
Taste of Melbourne is a stunning celebration of Melbourne’s dining scene, where over four indulgent days, the city’s latest, greatest and hottest restaurants will each create 3-4 exquisite signature dishes in ‘taste’ sized portions for you to sample at the ultimate restaurant festival. Graze through a selection of over 50 tasting dishes crafted by restaurants like Circa, The Prince, Luxembourg, MoVida, Pei Modern, Royal Mail Hotel, Pastuso, Supernormal and many more. Mingle with award-winning chefs and like-minded foodies as you browse through hand-picked premium food and drinks, take part in one of the many interactive foodie attractions or simply relax and enjoy live entertainment in the beautiful lakeside surroundings of Albert Park.
A grand celebration like no other, the Bon Om Tuk Water Festival is a traditional festival that marks the end of the monsoon period, a reversal of the flow between the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, and the start of the fishing season. Locals from various provinces and foreign tourists alike gather in Phnom Penh to celebrate the occasion with boat races and festivities. A tradition dating way back to the reign of King Jayavarman VII, the boat races remain as the festival’s highlight for hundreds of hopeful teams of rowers as they vie for the top spot, whereas traditional rituals such as a candle lighting ceremony, rice husk pounding ceremony and parade of illuminated boats will commence in the evening.

Pushkar Camel Fair INDIA
Loi Krathong Festival THAILAND
Neon Lights 2015 SINGAPORE
Pushkar Camel Fair is a grand event in Rajasthan celebrated with great fanfare by the locals, with exciting cultural and musical events, thrilling camel safari tours and a chance to stay in the traditional camps. Starting off the five-day long fair is the trading of cattle including camels, horses, cows, goats and sheep, before they are decked up in beautiful clothes and ornaments for public display. Watch as owners adorn their camels in dynamic and eye-catching gear to win the camel competition. Grab the chance to bag some traditional Rajasthani souvenirs such as ornaments of silver and bead necklace, tie-dye fabrics and garments, printed textiles, footwear, artifacts and many more. If you get hungry, indulge in the delectable Rajasthani dishes cooked with rich Indian spices, dry fruits and homemade yoghurt.
One of the most picturesque festivals in Bangkok, Loi Krathong is a festival when people gather around lakes, rivers and canals to pay respects to the goddess of water by releasing beautiful lotus shaped rafts, decorated with candles, incense and flowers onto the water. This activity also symbolizes the letting go of one’s anger, grudges and all other negative feelings in order to start anew. In the run-up to the festival, you will find many shops and market stalls selling ready-made ‘krathongs’ – similar to a small boat or receptacle, or in parts so that you can assemble and decorate your ‘krathong’ to your heart’s content. Release them into a river or small canals as the traditional Thais do, and immerse yourself in a string of cultural activities, such as ‘Ram Wong’ dance performances, krathong-making competitions and even a beauty contest.
Inspired by the greatest music festivals all over the world, Neon Lights is a new major music and art destination festival that encompasses international and local music, dance, theatre, comedy, art and design installations, spoken word and children’s workshops. The first of its kind in Singapore, the inaugural annual festival runs over two days on six stages spread across Fort Canning Park. Headliners include legendary hit-makers USA’s CHIC featuring Nile Rodgers – one of the most influential producers and prolific musicians in the history of popular music, as well as multi-platinum-selling singersongwriter Ireland’s Damien Rice, who will be playing his first Singapore show in nearly a decade. Groove the night away to the beats of Mercury Rev, Flight Facilities and Ratatat, or simply bask in the addictive atmosphere of the festival.

If there is ever a place that can offer a solution for a creative block, this might be it. Newly opened on September 2015, Hotel Vagabond is situated in Singapore’s cultural district, and comes with 42 art-themed rooms. A Haven Amidst the Snowy Peaks of the Himalayas Experience the state of Jammu and Kashmir, known for its scenic beauty, rich history and culture
THE HIMALAYAS
Srinagar Positioned snugly in the Kashmir Valley, on the banks of the Jhelum River, Srinagar is usually the first stop for travellers reaching the valley. Mostly known for its timeless architecture, intricate craftsmanship, and more notably its houseboats, many visitors often fall under the charm of the vast and tranquil Dal Lake, often known as “Srinagar’s Jewel” by the locals. The vibrant houseboats that float placidly along the enchanting lake also comes highly recommended as a unique form of accommodation for tourists looking for novelty rather than comfort.
THE RARE AND ELUSIVE SNOW LEOPARD
The state of Jammu and Kashmir is known as “Paradise on Earth”, and with the Himalayas serving as the backdrop for this beautiful destination, it is no surprise why this state is a perfect getaway for tourists looking for the extraordinary. Even though Jammu and Kashmir is one state, it consists of three regions – Jammu, the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. The city of Jammu is mostly known for its historic places of worship, while Kashmir and Ladakh are known for their stunning vistas of mountain peaks and lush green valleys.
Jammu City
There is a reason why Jammu City is known as the “City of Temples”. With its countless shrines, temples and places of worship, Jammu City is a perfect place for spiritually starved souls looking to re-ignite and re-discover their spiritual selves. Some of these temples, spanning as far back as 1860 AD, are steeped in rich history and culture. Frequented by both local devotees and foreign visitors, these places exude an ambience that allows one to gain insight and self-awareness.
from the main gods of the temple, Lord Rama and Vishnu. An interesting fact about this temple is that it has a huge library that keeps rare and valuable manuscripts and ancient texts. The knowledge and beauty that this temple embodies makes it an ideal destination for spiritual seekers.
Raghunath Temple
The Kashmir Valley
Raghunath Temple is one of the oldest temples in Jammu, but it’s far from the dilapidated state that you may expect. Situated in the heart of Jammu City, this temple boasts opulent interior walls plated in gold, and carvings that depict legendary tales of deities. While tourists gather to admire the picturesque sceneries, devotees congregate to pay pilgrimage and perform pujas to acquire blessings
THE LUSH PLAINS OF KASHMIR
Kashmir is famous for its Himalayan foot-hills, lush green meadows, and snow-capped mountains. The scenic beauty that this region embodies makes it a perfect getaway for dreamers and wanderers in search of a refreshing break, or that ever elusive inspiration. It is almost unbelievable that a region that exudes such peace and beauty has experienced volatile political unrest for centuries.
Jammu and Kashmir is also one of the best places to catch a glimpse of the elusive and endangered Snow Leopard, as it is common for these enigmatic wild cats to hunt in high-altitudes of the Himalayan Mountains. Adventurers and wildlife enthusiasts are encouraged to visit the Hemis National Park, located in the eastern part of Ladakh, which protects endangered mammals such as the Tibetan wolf, Asiatic ibex and Eurasian brown bear. The best time to visit is between May and September, but do take note that trekking routes are closed after November due to heavy snowfall. Although there are no hotels situated near the reserve, the villages situated within the reserve as well as the revered Hemis Monastery do provide accommodation for visitors. Whether you find yourself trekking through lush green valleys, or meditating within the sacred halls of an ancient temple, the state of Jammu and Kashmir presents a personal paradise for everyone. A Shoppers’ Paradise Likes moths to a flame, Bangkok attracts shoppers from all around the world with its maze-like markets and opulent malls, leaving them with an unforgettable experience unlike anywhere else As a capital that attracts tourists from all walks of life, Bangkok encompasses a vibrant city life with a vast number of attractions suited for all ages. As such, Bangkok is an oft-sought after refuge for those seeking a spiritual retreat, or serves as an ideal getaway for most others. But most relate this metropolis with shopping, and it is no surprise why. Whether it is their night markets or posh looking malls, Bangkok offers something for everyone.
CHATUCHAK WEEKEND MARKET
SHOPPING IN BANGKOK
Chatuchak Weekend Market
If you have a knack for negotiating the best prices for your goods, you must make a trip to Chatuchak Weekend Market. As the name implies, most of the market is open to the general public on the weekends, but you can also do some late night shopping on Friday nights. The huge market is divided into 27 sections and houses over 15,000 stalls. Being the biggest flea market in Thailand, that has to mean something right? Well, this market sells everything you can imagine, from trendy clothes to porcelain and ceramic goods, even live animals. Over 200,000 visitors, both local and foreign, flock to this popular destination during the weekends. So if you find yourself in Bangkok with a weekend to spare, we highly recommend exploring this place.
Central World
If you have missed the weekend market, fret not as Central World awaits! The mega-mall boasts 8 levels of pure shopping goodness, and houses two mega-stores, Zen and Isetan. Each level caters to a specific demographic, for instance, the 2nd level sells women’s clothing, while the 3rd level caters to men. The mall is essentially divided into six different zones, and incorporates a unique design in each. Having an open concept where all the zones are designed to be interconnected, the shopping complex allows shoppers to view other zones simultaneously while they shop in one.
Night Markets
Seeking some after-dark shopping activity? JJ Green and On Nut are just a few of the night markets that are perfect for nocturnal shoppers, or even shoppers looking for a change of pace.
JJ Green
CENTRAL WORLD
If the glitz and glamour of luxury goods ever gets too much for you, consider visiting the aquarium – yes, the largest aquarium in Southeast Asia is in a departmental store! Or perhaps watch a movie at the Paragon Cineplex, dubbed the country’s most luxurious cinema. The cineplex operates Thailand’s largest multiplex with 16 screens, along with the 600-seat Krungsri IMAX theatre and the spacious 1,200-seat Siam Pavalai amphitheatre.
JJ Green is relatively more chill as compared to other night markets, and mostly sells vintage apparels (including printed shirts), retro toys from the 90s (figurines, gameboys etc.), and even cassette tapes featuring songs from iconic music artists. From bustling bars to small stalls serving snacks, comfort foods and everything in-between, it is safe to assume why this night market is dubbed the gypsy market of Bangkok. JJ Green is open to the public from 5pm to 1am, Thursdays to Sundays.
On Nut
Small yet cosy, the On Nut night market may not be as big as its counterparts, but its laid-back ambience is truly endearing. Located below the On Nut BTS Station, this night market is easily accessible to the public, and remains as an attractive destination for the expat community in the neighbourhood. Open 7 days per week from 4pm to 10pm, this night market sells clothes, food, and even has a beer garden situated at the back of the market.
If you are into high fashion, Siam Paragon is a definite must-visit! Located just minutes away from Central World, this departmental store carries iconic international brands such as Prada, Louis Vuitton, Hermes and many more. With over 250 shops, this mall is frequented by locals and international visitors wealthy enough to indulge and splurge to their hearts’ content. It is also not surprising to see lengthy queues outside the Paragon around the time a new product launches, as people gather in masses to catch a glimpse of the season’s new line.

Soaring to Greater Heights These are some of the activities that we have been up to this year to fortify the brand of Traveloc in Singapore and Malaysia
Titan DSB had worked closely with Uni-Asia Tours Hong Kong during the Hong Kong Muslim Friendly Product Workshop held at Park Royal Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and Excelsior Hotel in Ipoh. Each participant in the workshop received a set of Traveloc.
With this collaboration with Uni-Asia Tours Hong Kong, we had also attended the Hong Kong Travel Mission To Malaysia event that was organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board. Our main purpose was to promote the Travel Outlet Online store to participants of the event, while introducing our Traveloc and its unique features to interested parties. As one of the sponsors for the MITM Fair 2015, Titan DSB had received overwhelming response from the general public about the Travelocs that we had sponsored for the event. In doing so, we had successfully increased the awareness of Luggage Safety to potential travellers and garnered heightened interest for our Travelocs. By sponsoring the Travelocs as door gifts for the Porsche Club Annual Golf Championship 2015, we feel that we have managed to create more awareness about luggage safety to golfers who attended this event. During the Matta Fair in September 2015, Titan DSB had collaborated with Bestour & Travel (M) Sdn Bhd together with Etihad Airlines to sponsor our Travelocs as gifts to customers who purchased travel packages from Bestour during the fair. In addition, Titan DSB has also signed an MOU with Fitloq Sdn Bhd to promote safety and security for bags during sporting events. The first sporting
event that we have sponsored was the Mountain Bike Challenge 2015 in Penang. In future, Titan DSB will continue to work closely with Fitloq Sdn Bhd for the majority of upcoming events held within the sporting industry. As for Singapore, Titan DSB will be participating in two exhibitions. We had sponsored 500 sets of Travelocs to WWM PTE LTD, the organiser of the Singapore Travel Mart 2015 that was held in Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre, as door gifts for visitors during the exhibition. This has raised the public’s interest in our Traveloc, and amidst the enquiries about our product at the event, we have also successfully taught about the importance of luggage safety and security, especially while travelling. Titan DSB will also be present at the ITB Asia 2015 exhibition as a representative of Uni-Asia Tours Hong Kong to promote the Travel Outlet Online store. Thereafter, we will be heading to the WTM exhibition in ExCel London to promote the Travel Outlet Online store as well. With the response and support that Titan DSB has received, we are confident that the Travelocs and Travel Outlet Online stores will be a success in the very near future.
PHOTOS: TITAN DESIGNS
It has been a very busy and exciting year for Titan DSB as we actively promote the importance of Luggage Safety and Awareness in Malaysia by participating in travel-related exhibitions, events and workshops. Our company has recently joined forces with Uni-Asia Tours Hong Kong to promote the Travel Outlet Online store, which is an e-commerce platform in Malaysia and other parts of the world. With this unique joint venture, Titan DSB will be actively involved in the travel industry to promote value-for-money travel packages to Hong Kong, and this will enable us to have a further market reach in creating awareness for luggage safety via Traveloc. In fact, Uni-Asia Tours Hong Kong will also be promoting the Traveloc within the region.

A City That Never Gets Old Having mastered the art of balancing things old and new, let Lisbon take you on a journey through spaces and time
CASCAIS
THE ALFAMA
Marvel at the architectural artistry of the Torre de Belem, as it looms over the picturesque riverside in Belem. Located just across the banks, visit the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the ornate monastery is a prime example of Late Gothic Manueline architecture referencing distinct maritime motifs. Another highlight from the district is the Museu Coleção Berardo, which showcases works from the likes of Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. Another historic building of note is the striking Castelo de São Jorge, a strongly fortified citadel which sits upon an imposing hilltop overlooking the entire town and the Tagus river. Play out your medieval fantasies as you get familiar with the castle and its rich history. Located nearby, is the National Tile Museum, a 16th-century convent -turned-museum, just one of the numerous curious galleries you can find in Lisbon. Here you can learn all about the famous blue azujelo tiles, a significant fixture in Portugal’s history.
However, don’t let this city’s seemingly antiquated exterior fool you. While the centuries-old metropolis may be cloaked in historic elegance, Lisbon’s spirit is that of a youth; its essence filled with vigour and wonder. Take for instance, Village Underground Lisboa — a creative hub built out of stacked abandoned shipping containers to form a Tetris-like structure and placed in a vast open courtyard in the Carris Museum. A spin-off from its counterpart in Shoreditch, London, the open-air event space can be found in the west end of the city, as well as the frontier of Lisbon’s budding local music and arts scene. Many other cultural hotspots can be found scattered in the districts of Bairro Alto and Intendente, making good use of old refurbished spaces and filling the streets with a cacophony of music ranging from jazz to electronica. The musical experience would not be complete without immersing yourself in some live fado. More endearingly known as the soul music of Portugal, fado’s origin can be traced back to the everyday narratives of the working class in the 1800s. Often recognised by its wistful melodies and forlorn lyrics inspired by the sea or life of the impoverished, classical fado performed by a master virtuoso is sure to evoke feelings of saudade; a word locals use to describe deep emotional states of melancholic longing for someone or something that has been lost.
BELEM TOWER
Lisbon has managed to accomplish something almost unheard of in most other modern cities. It has constantly reinvented itself without losing its identity. After going through extensive renovations, the once-dowdy neighbourhoods have been given a new lease of life, adding a polished modern twist to its vintage aesthetics. Its boroughs perfectly embody a balance of the old and new that the young and elderly alike can both appreciate, making sure that there’s something for everyone in the family.
PHOTOS: TURISMO DE LISBOA
Set beside Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon is a coastal city spread across steep slopes that overlook the Tagus River, better known to locals as the Rio Tejo. Being the oldest city in Western Europe, and one of the oldest cities in the world, Portugal’s capital mesmerises with its age-old charm and historic beauty at every turn.

PORTUGUESE EGG TARTS
PHOTOS: 123RF/GREGOR CERAR, NUTTAPHONG KANCHANACHAYA,
Regardless of where you choose to dine, a gastronomical adventure awaits. With a supposed 365 different ways to prepare the traditional fare, it is next to impossible to find a restaurant that does not serve some form of it.
STREET IN LISBON
The scenic cityscape also serves as a backdrop for a rich culture diverse in the culinary arts. Head down to any restaurant lining the streets for local delicacies such as the Portuguese national dish Bacalhau (salted codfish). The dish gained its popularity after the discovery in Newfoundland in 1497, where the Portuguese in times past played a central role in fishing the cod-rich waters of the Grand Banks of the North Atlantic. The savoury fish soon became a staple for Portuguese cuisine, affectionately christened as fiel amigo (loyal friend).
On the other hand, how could one forget the world renowned pasteis de nata, or more commonly known to foreigners as the Portuguese egg tart. The gooey-centered pastry, with its famed flaky exterior, is prevalent at every corner of the city. With the adoration of the local delicacy bordering on the point of devotion, it is not uncommon to hear enthused citizens having impassioned disputes about which local joint serves up the best. However, many locals regard Antiga Confeitaria de Belem, a bakery adorned with ornamental tiles found in the western perimeters, to be the birthplace of the revered patisserie, and the only place to have the authentic pasteis de nata experience. It is said that the sweet pastries resulted from an attempt at survival, after all convents and monasteries were shut down as an outcome of the liberal revolution of 1820. Sold in a modest store next to the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, located in Belém, the custard-filled tarts quickly gained
Enjoying Lisbon is as simple as walking from place to place, and going with the flow of things. Calm and unhurried, no rush is to be found in the city by the sea; a striking contrast from the often bustling and fast-paced metropolises we are all too used to. Saunter up and down the vacillating cobblestoned streets of Alfama, and feel as if you’ve stepped into a window to the past. Basking in the inviting ambience of the aged neighbourhood, embellished by the warm banter of the people, is enough to make any traveller weather the arduous sojourns along the elevated routes of city. If you do, however, find yourself suffering from sore feet, fret not. Hop onto one of the iconic bright yellow trolleys as they snake around Lisbon’s narrow lanes. Go sunbathing and opt for a breath of cool sea breeze from a series of arresting beaches located just outside Lisbon, from Cascais to Estoril. Be it exploring the grandiose Gothic cathedrals, strolling along the quaint little pastel-coloured buildings found along the Bairro Alto district, or wandering through the scant, winding back alleys found throughout the city, Lisbon lies in wait, ready to be discovered and sweep you off your feet.

Blessed Yogyakarta Embrace nature, artistic and cultural splendour at Indonesia’s most historically-iconic destination

fanciful rows of shops selling various souvenirs at Malioboro Street. For local treats and wholesale fanfare, take the becak (trishaw) to check out traditional markets such as Pasar Beringharjo, Pasar Kranggan and Pasar Klithikan Pakuncen.
Travellers’ legend says that you are bound to return to Yogyakarta after the first visit. Its magical draw glimmers beyond the mythical air that clouds above its many mighty architectural sites – from Borobudur, Prambanan, Ratu Boko Temples and others. The sweetness of Yogyakarta lingers as you bite into a piece of sweet bakpia, speak to the friendly andong (horse-pulled carts) driver or dive into its many serene beaches. Yogyakarta, with its treasured history, artistic zest and gorgeous natural wonders, will enrich any traveller’s fervour to unravel Indonesia’s riveting ancestral lands.
Eminent History Yogyakarta’s illustrious heritage stems inherently from the period Prince Mangkubumi established the Yogyakarta Sultanate, distinguished as one of the most powerful Javanese states in history ever. An awe-inspiring stroll around the vastly majestic Sultan’s Palace or Kraton gives you a glimpse of the grandeur imperial lifestyle starting from the luxurious Main Court - Alun Alun, which is the Sultan’s private grounds, to his recreational realm of Taman Sari. Interestingly, you can also visit one of the oldest and largest mosque in Yogyakarta, Masjid Gede Kauman and later delve into an imaginary world of eternal fun with the various types of games and attractions at the Taman Pintar Planetarium. Across from Kraton, visit Vredeburg Fort – fort of peace built by the Dutch army in 1765 that represents Yogyakarta’s reticent colonial history. A twin cannon amongst other preserved warfare items and nostalgic collection of historical paraphernalia and paintings depict the province’s struggle to defend Indonesia’s independence.

Unaltered Landscapes Galore
Despite being located in one of the most seismically active parts of Central Java, Yogyakarta boasts divine gifts from Mother Earth all around its lands. Whether cued to “go west or go north” by the locals who habitually direct you by their preferred compass on the best places to visit, you will be greeted with many fascinating nature forms along the way. Other prominent geo-heritage sites that offer both stunning sceneries and enthralling natural revelations include the sand dunes at Parangtritis in Bantul, Siung beach in Gunung Kidul, eocene limestone at Gamping and pillow lava at Berbah, both in the Sleman district.
Renowned as the cultural hub of Indonesia, Yogyakarta thrives with vibrant selections of theatre and dance houses, museums as well as art galleries. At the Sonobudoyo Museum, artefacts that showcase novel Javanese archaeology such as ancient statues, weapons, wayang puppets, masks, royal textiles and complete sets of Javanese gamelan instruments, reflect Yogyakarta’s cultural renaissance. In the evening, the museum transforms into a captivating performance arena with wayang kulit puppetry shadow plays accompanied by a gamelan orchestra. Enjoy enchanting traditional music by watching the Ramayana ballet and other Javanese court dances at Prambanan and Purowisata. Art enthusiasts would not want to miss visiting the Affandi gallery to see amazing impressionist and expressionist works of Indonesia’s most celebrated painter, Affandi. Your Winter Glow
Who says it is impossible to achieve luminous skin during winter? Let us show you how! It is that time of the year to be all dressed up in your favourite trench coats, winter boots and scarves, looking chic while keeping warm at the same time. Alas, that dull skin and chappy lips are quite a downer on your vogue look; those are signs of winter’s toll on you. Fret no further, here are a few tips to help you achieve luminous skin this holiday season.
Moisturize, moisturize and moisturize. While it is clear by now that your skin needs as much moisture as it could possibly get, it is important to note that moisturizing on a damp skin helps to seal all that dampness in, making your moisturizer work even harder. Moisturize day and night preferably with an oil-based moisturizer, which will help to retain moisture longer throughout the day. Be sure to moisturize your face, body and lips. Slough off dry lips with a lip balm. Flaky lips are definitely not a pretty sight, so use either petroleum jelly or a beeswax balm to constantly hydrate your lips, in particular the corners of the mouth so as to prevent any cold sores. Keep a lip balm in your pocket to not only moisturize your lips but to glam it up. For the ladies, avoid wearing a matte lipstick, choose a moisturizing lipstick to enhance your look without the fear of flaky lips.
Warm It Up Thinking of jumping into a hot bathtub to keep yourself warm? You might want to think twice about that. The oils on your skin will be stripped as soon as you step out of the shower with the prolonged temperature. Opt for a short warm shower instead in order not to dehydrate your skin further.
Exfoliate All that dehydrated dead skin cells tend to build up even if you have been moisturizing religiously, hiding that gorgeous glow you have worked hard for. Gently exfoliate once a week using a simple homemade exfoliant like an oatmeal honey mask
or a sugar scrub to remove all that dry, dead skin cells, and reveal soft and smooth skin all over your face and body. Remember, less is more; it is not advisable to exfoliate more than once a week as it will only increase the damage on your dry winter-tolled skin.
Drink Up To beat the cold, we often indulge in temptations like hot chocolate topped with toasty marshmallows, but it is not enough to hydrate your skin from the inside. A cup of warm water or tea with lemon goes a long way to hydrate the skin. It not only keeps your skin hydrated, it also brings you one step closer to achieving that radiant glow.
Sunscreen Did you know that even in winter, the sun’s UV rays are just as harmful on your skin? Do not neglect the sunscreen even if you are heading out of the house for a short bit. Choose one with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin against the sun’s glare reflecting off the snow-covered ground.
Layering Warmth Wear gloves and scarves made out of cotton to protect your skin from the cold, other materials such as wool might aggravate your skin. If you have to, wear cotton beneath wool layers. Here’s a tip: moisturize before wearing your gloves and scarves so as to lock in all that moisture which will keep your skin feeling warm and soft. Even when you are indoors, consider layering your clothes to feel snuggly as compared to using a heater which will only dry your skin out eventually.
Now that you have all the tips you need, bask in the wonders and joy of winter without having to worry about your skin. You are definitely all covered!

DOMESTIC FUN
Going Green at the New Coney Island Park Marvel at the beauty of nature amidst the bustle of city life No, it is not all fun, games and shrieking laughter at this Coney Island. Singapore’s Coney Island, or otherwise known as Pulau Serangoon, is a 50-hectare island covered in pristine coastal forests and seemingly endless beaches, situated a mere 100 metres from mainland Singapore. After undergoing 15 months of construction, NParks had proudly announced last month that the Coney Island Park is now open to the public and boasts a variety of activities to do – from guided tours around the island, to bird watching and cycling. Situated right opposite Punggol New Town, Coney Island offers a short, inexpensive getaway for Singaporeans who are looking to escape the constant stress of everyday life. Home to over 150 species of animals and even endangered species of birds such as the Spotted Wood Owl and the Rusty Breasted Cuckoo, Coney Island Park is a rustic paradise for nature lovers. Visitors can venture along the forest trails into the thick of the woods, where you can find 86 unique tree species, and experience nature at its finest. Keep a look out for the nest boxes and bird boxes installed in the park, and you might be surprised with a glimpse or two of the shy bee-eaters and woodpeckers that nest in such habitats. The island is also a popular stopover for migratory birds so you never know what you might find. However, there is far more than just forests for visitors to explore. The public can also wander along the newly built boardwalks amongst mangrove swamps that host a diverse variety of plant and animal species. If you are lucky and have a keen enough eye, you might even spot the only Brahman Bull (a severely endangered species) that resides on the island.
CONEY ISLAND
FAMILY OF OTTERS
RICH DIVERSITY OF BIRDS
For those looking for a more wholesome experience of the island, online registration is available for guided tours that start from 10am to 11am on selected dates. After which, if you fancy a cycle with your family and loved ones, you may rent bicycles from Punggol Point Park and cycle from one end of the island to the other. Zip through the pathways and breathe in the scent of fresh air mixed with the salty sea breeze. Finally, when the day is done and you are ready to wind down, meander down the boardwalks and catch a glimpse of the setting sun slowly dipping beyond the horizon. In order to retain the rich biodiversity of Coney Island, the park is developed in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner so that locals can enjoy a novel, yet authentic nature experience. Staying true to the eco-friendly theme, all electricity on the island is powered by solar energy while water
systems from water coolers to toilets function from harvested rainwater. Even the entire boardwalk, benches and park signs that are littered all over the island are made from recycled timber collected from uprooted Casuarina trees. Not a single thing went to waste in the making of this national park. It is remarkable to think that just decades ago, Singapore was home to some of the most diverse wildlife on earth, but as the years went by, more and more of our flora and fauna have become critically endangered or locally extinct in the wild. Even though Coney Island is a mere shadow of what once was, it is still a step in the right direction towards the ultimate goal of environmental sustainability. Coney Island Park is a testament to how the rapidly diminishing natural wonders of the world can co-exist with the everyday luxuries we have grown so used to.

ACROSS OUR SHORES
Beyond Historic Malacca A refreshed iconic city with historic pride and modernized charm Sights and Stay
After attaining its UNESCO’s World Heritage Site status, Malacca has been rejuvenated to a wholesome holiday spot for the family. The fascinating city offers a rich mix of nostalgic east-west cultural experience, from a colonial-nyonya fusion food hunt to traditional-modern markets and boutique shopping extravaganza. Centuries ago, Malacca grew in prominence as a thriving trading gateway due to its strategic port location within the Malay Archipelago. Today, remnants of that wealth and its richness as a hospitable metropolis are evident from the heritage buildings and colonial structures, preserved and illuminated through various hotels around the city. A stay at The Settlement Hotel Melaka opens a window to the city’s fascinating past, where the hotel’s decor brings out Malacca’s illustrious history emboldened with intertwined cultures. Reborn from a 1960’s government building located at the fringe of the Portuguese Settlement along Jalan Ujong Pasir, the elegant hotel boasts a 45-room residence block and four traditional Malay villas furnished with a lavish spa. Along the same street, The Temasek Hotel stands just a few minutes away from Malacca’s shopping and entertainment hub along with a plethora of local attractions, such as The Stadthuys, Porta de
Santiago, Dataran Pahlawan, Menara Taming Sari, Melaka River Cruise, Mahkota Parade and many more. Apart from organizing a wide range of in-
house activities within its premises, the Temasek Hotel also provides convenient shuttle service to Jetty Syahbandar.
Gastronomic Galore
When in Malacca, you cannot miss tasting their mouth-watering specialties, such as the spicy gravy asam pedas melaka, savoury kuih udang alor gajah, crushed-ice cendol, fermented cencaluk condiment, misai kucing herbal tea and many more. All in all, the endless food spread in Malacca is a testament to the intertwined Malay, Chinese, Indian and Portugese heritages. When trying the Baba and Nyonya dishes, savour the combination of Chinese-style cooking with the use of Indian spices and herbs that are often used by the Malays.
Malacca offers an assortment of shopping options, from huge supermarkets fronted by Mydin Hypermarket, Giant Hypermarket, Jusco and Tesco that offer the usual household sundries at wholesale prices, to trendy shopping malls such as Melaka Sentral and Mahkota Parade. However, a visit to Jonker Walk tops all others as the not-tobe-missed shopping destination during your sojourn in Malacca. A popular hub for antiquegoods shoppers, Jonker Walk presents rare finds and artefacts from the Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial periods, amongst which include decorative home-wares, handicrafts as well as rustic Baba baskets, furniture, china and even valuable Buddha statues, all at affordable prices. Moving away from traditional goods, Malacca now also features eclectic lifestyle boutiques, such as the Sweet Summer Cottage that sells handmade
soaps using the traditional European cold processed method in their soap production. Using any one of their aromatic soaps will give your skin the queenly treatment it deserves, as the innate rich quality of plant natural oils are painstakingly preserved in each bar of soap produced. For teenagers and the young at heart, funky action hero stores, punk streetwear shops as well as Korean or Japanese pop-style fashion outlets have sprouted up at every corner of the vibrant town to fulfil everyone’s shopping needs. Dress up in bright action hero costumes equipped with colourful head gears and eyewear, before walking out confidently to further explore the historic streets. Showcase your take on old-school Malaccan glamour and its contemporary reprise – all in appreciation of the city’s mesmerizing persona.
To keep your tastebuds tingling, do not forget to try delicacies like fat laksa (noodles and shrimp with coconut laksa sauce) and saffron rice before topping it off with appetizers like sago melaka (sugared sago seeds) and kuih koci (coconut with glutinous rice flour). You can find fresh seafood selection at the Waterfront Seafarer Restaurant, or head to other famous go-to restaurants, which include Famosa Chicken Rice, Newton Food Court, Poon Kuen Restaurant and Yong Peng Fishball Restaurant, just to name a few.
