We welcome the month of July with fun, adventure, and exploration. In this issue of Travel Journal we take you off the beaten track to bring you exciting escapades in South Africa (page 28), Okinawa (page 20) and many other intriguing countries. In recent years, more people are developing a taste for adventure, and as such we hope to inspire you with our own travels. Having said that, I would like to share my own trip to Yogyakarta, Indonesia. As a city mostly known for its traditional arts and cultural heritage, it came as a complete surprise to me when I discovered a different side to this ancient city. From taking a jeep ride to watch a spectacular sunrise near the peaks of Mount Merapi, to cave tubing down a river through the Goa Pindul Cave, I was immersed in activities that were both unforgettable and exhilarating. My most memorable experience was a hike up Gunung Api Purba, a mountain situated in Nglanggeran village, where I was greeted by a panoramic view of my surroundings. In addition to exploring the rugged landscapes of Yogyakarta, I learned a lot about Javanese culture and history by visiting Taman Sari Water Castle, Yogyakarta Palace, and Borobudur - a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 8th century. Not only was I impressed by the rich culture of this city, but was also immensely pleased with my trip. If you are looking for a getaway that can give you your money’s worth, Yogyakarta is your best bet. Singapore Garden Festival

Stop and smell the roses at the Singapore Garden Festival this July. Take a breather from your busy schedule and head to the Gardens by the Bay to spend some time among the brilliantly coloured flowers embellishing the nature park. The anticipated international event is back for another year to enthrall botanical enthusiasts, nature lovers, and just about anyone who can appreciate the captivating sights of flowers in their full bloom. The festival will feature various gardens that transport you to fantastical realms filled with a plethora of flowers. The biennial event invites awardwinning landscapists and garden designers, both local and international, to fashion themed gardens to incite the interest of the public.
Ladakh’s most notable Hemis Monastery, celebrates the birth of Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. The two-day event, declared a state holiday, draws locals from all over the region to dress up in traditional clothes and immerse themselves in the spirit of the festivities. Tibetan Lamas- senior Buddhist monks- adorn themselves with bright masks, and partake in a masked dance performance, known as Cham. The slow, trance-like dance movements coupled with the incense-laden air creates a soothing, and a trancelike ambience. The masks range from depicting humble, divine faces to grotesque looking entities, and signifies the prevalence of good over evil.

Australian Outback Marathon AUSTRALIA
The Australian Outback Marathon is back again to host the famed adrenaline-inducing race that utilises off-road, bush trails as running routes. Boryeong Mud Festival SOUTH KOREA
Into its 17th edition, the Boryeong Mud Festival returns with a whole new line-up of fun and exciting activities for festivalgoers. The list of attractions and activities include a giant mud bath, mud slides, and even a mud mob scene, whereby mud water cannons will soak spectators while they enjoy live performances by the beach. This annual happening draws crowds from all over the region and the world, entertaining visitors with its exhilarating activities and programs. Over the years, the event has grown in prominence, so much so that it has become a major tourist attraction. Into its 16th year, the annual music festival is back again to rock spectators with performances from international bands and musicians. Situated on the picturesque Fulong Beach in New Taipei City, the event will feature music genres such as, rock, rap, pop and indie. Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival THAILAND
The Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival marks the beginning of the Buddhist Lent, and celebrates this auspicious period with a procession of large-scale candle carvings of deities, demons, and other celestial entities. The floats not only serve as a testament to the workmanship of skilled artisans, but also depict accounts from Hindu and Buddhist mythology. The Buddhist Lent commemorates spiritual renewal, and as such, Buddhist monks are required to study the scriptures while remaining within the confines of their temples for three months. Royal Caribbean International to Homeport Billion-Dollar Smartship Ovation of the Seas in Singapore Royal Caribbean International has announced that it will dock its billion-dollar smartship, Ovation of the Seas, in Singapore in 2017 for a season. This will bring thousands of travellers to the region and inject millions into the local and regional economies. Making history as the first international cruise line to deploy a brand new ship to Asia for homeporting, Ovation of the Seas was delivered in April. The smartship will be the largest and most technologically-advanced ship to call Singapore its home next year. Over her 10 sailings from March to April 2017, Ovation of the Seas is expected to add some 42,000 additional guests to the Singapore cruising scene, and delivering millions through in-port spend. She will offer return trips ranging from three to five nights to Penang, Phuket, Bangkok (Laem Chabang), and a one-way cruise to Tianjin with calls at Ho Chi Minh City (Phu My) for an overnight, Hue/Danang (Chan May), Hong Kong and Seoul (Incheon). Hop on the K-Travel Bus, and explore Korea’s hidden charms The newly launched foreigner-exclusive coach, K-Travel Bus, will travel between Seoul and other regions, allowing travellers to gain a deeper insight into the region’s attractions. Tourists will gain a better perspective on the country without having to worry about transport or accommodation when they embark on the two-day bus tour. Garuda Indonesia Launches the Reoperation of Singapore – Medan Flight Indonesia’s award-winning national airline, Garuda Indonesia, has launched the re-operation of daily flights between Singapore and Medan. A HASSLE-FREE JOURNEY TO THE HIMALAYAS

he Himalayas has always been known for its astounding beauty and imposing peaks. The thought of spending your vacation on the highest mountain range in the world may seem daunting, since the common misconception among most people is that this renowned destination is best experienced through hours of strenuous hiking and trekking. It’s no surprise that North Korea is an authoritarian regime, however there’s more to this country than meets the eye

Pyongyang is the capital of North Korea and the largest city in the country. The biggest tourist attraction is undoubtedly its remarkable architecture and outstanding structures such as Tower of Juche Idea, The Arch of Triumph, Chollima the Statue, Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum, Monuments to the Victory and Monument to Three Charters for National Reunification. One iconic attraction that you will not want to miss is the Mansudae Grand Monument, which was renovated in 2012 with two bronze statues of the late North Korean leaders Kim II-sung and Kim Jong-iI. This 65-foot bronze statue was unveiled in 1972 to celebrate Kim II-sung’s 60th birthday, and the statue of Kim Jong-iI was added in 2012 following the Dear Leader’s death. Rumor has it that the statue was originally covered in gold lead, but was removed on the insistence of the Chinese government, who were heavily funding the regime. North Koreans regard this monument with great respect and they believe travellers should treat it with the same reverence and respect as they do. Hence, your tour guides will usually buy flowers and elect one member from the group to place them at the foot of the bronze statue, before the whole group bows before it. Since the leaders of DPRK are highly respected public figures, travellers need to practice caution when posing for photos with the statues. Pictures should frame the entire statue without cropping off any part, as it is considered offensive. Located 8km from the centre of Pyongyang is Mangyongdae, where Kim II-sung was born and raised. The complex consists of three areas, the house, a water well, and a viewing platform situated at the top of the hill. Travellers will get a tour of the house and will be briefed on President Kim II-sung’s patriotic and revolutionary life story. Returning back to Pyongyang, travellers will get an opportunity to board the Pyongyang Metro, which is the deepest metro in the world. At 360 feet below surface level, it takes almost four minutes to descend to the train platform. The station itself is breath-taking, it is a great edifice reminiscent of the palace with a variety of chandeliers that brighten this fascinating underground tunnel. Large walls and pillars are adorned with sculptures, embossed carvings, mosaics and other murals.

Mt. Myohyang
Mt Myohyang means Mysterious Fragrant Mountain in Korean, it sits in the center of the country and is one of the five famous mountains in Korea. Mt Myohyang is known for its awe-inspiring valleys, steep cliffs and magnificent ridges. In addition to its stunning scenery, it is also the home to the legendary King Tangun, the forefather of the Korean people. This area is now a national park and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The mountain is also home to the Pohyon temple and the International Friendship Exhibition, both of which are worth a visit. gifts range from a bullet-proof limousine from Stalin to opulent train cars from Mao Zedong. After visiting the International Friendship Exhibition Hall, you will take a quick drive to Pohyon Temple. Dating back to the 11th century, this temple is one of the last remaining Buddhist temples in North Korea.
Panmunjom
Take a trip down to Panmunjom that straddles the North and South Korean border. Visit the Armistice Agreement Halls, where the truce-Korean War Armistice Agreement-was signed. Talks will be given by a North Korean military personnel, who will explain the history of the site before you head over to visit the Military Demarcation Line. ADVENTURE TIME IN OKINAWA
Okinawa may be a part of Japan, but the idyllic tropical island is in a league of its own. WORDS BY: SARAH SATHYAMOORTHI

O
n board one of the first direct chartered flights by SilkAir, I reached the Japanese prefecture in less than five hours. From my window seat, I was greeted by the sapphire hues of the East China Sea and the buttermilk rays of the sun as the plane descended onto the tarmac of Naha Airport. Life on the island of Okinawa moves at its own pace, and Okinawans take pride in setting themselves apart from their Japanese counterparts. From the succulent slices of Agu Pork (an Okinawan breed) to the melodious tunes of the threestringed sanshin (think Asian banjo) and being home to the endangered Yanbaru kuina (a gorgeous little orange-beaked bird), it was clear that Okinawa was not just another run-ofthe-mill Japanese state. The first stop that would kick start my adventure-filled holiday was in a little town called Motobu. Located a twohour drive away from Naha in the Northern territory of Okinawa, Motobu juts out from the prefecture. I got checked into the Marine Piazza Okinawa, a lovely and spacious hotel decked in teal and sea-blue decor; rooms with views of a well-kempt backyard and ocean; and best of all, it is a twominute walk away from the Motobu Genki Mura (or Motobu Wellness Village).

popular attractions is the Dolphin Program, which gives visitors a chance to play and swim with these friendly mammals! I also got a chance to get up close and personal with two playful dolphins at the dolphin enclosure. Sitting on the edge of the moss-covered wooden platform, with my legs dangling in the water, the 300-kilo mammal (her name was Pamu) was just a few meters away from me. Before entering into Pamu’s territory, we had to be introduced. After a few rounds of games involving hand gestures and light strokes on Pamu’s body, I was welcomed into the heart of the dolphin’s home. The highlight of the program was being able to ride on the dolphin’s back! Holding on to the dorsal fin with two hands for dear life, I was whisked away with great force. The prospect of being in such close proximity with these mammals seemed frightening at first; but after learning about them and experiencing what large bundles of joys they are, it was clear my fears were unwarranted. After bidding adieu to my dolphin friends, I was all ready to fly board - one of the latest and most popular water sport activity in Okinawa. It involves strapping on a pair of ‘water boots’ that are connected to a jet which uses water pressure to propel you up into the air, allowing you to ‘fly’ above the waters. After multiple failed attempts, I finally managed to keep my knees straight and long enough to rise above the waters, emulating the iconic Ironman pose. Unable to keep my balance for long, I would crash back into the ocean and come up gasping for air; euphoric and exhilarated,
determined to stay in the air longer in the next round. The activity lasted for approximately 30 minutes - so if you manage to get the hang of keeping your balance, the more times you get to soar above the waves! The next morning, a snorkelling expedition was scheduled nearby Sesoko Island. Despite it being a cloudy day, I was surprised by the clarity of the water. I could see a multitude of marine life, including coral reefs in muted shades of pink and orange; some fish in bright shades of blue and purple, others multi-coloured. My guide picked up a gorgeous blue starfish and gestured for me to feel it-this provided me with a perfect photo opportunity. The swim was relaxed and I got to immerse in the captivating sights of the aquatic world for a good 40 minutes before heading back. Lunch was at a cafe facing the sea, along Bise Fukugi Tree road. At Cahaya Bulan, I tucked into a bowl of flavourful rice topped with succulent pieces of pork (found in almost every meal in Okinawa), accompanied with vegetables.

After a half hour drive after lunch, I found myself in a seemingly barren plot of land, with nothing but a wooden hut facing the wilderness. The hut belonged to Doki Doki Tours, provider of exhilarating buggy and hummer ride tours. The dirt course facing the hut was filled with wild turns and little slopes - and my heart started racing at the prospect of cruising through the terrain. Before we were allowed on to the tracks, we had a 10-minute crash course that helped us
21 | Travel Journal | Issue 09 | July 2016 to familiarise ourselves with the vehicle. After one cautious round around the circuit, I stepped on the accelerator with all the confidence of a 15 minutes of buggy-riding expert. We stopped for a trek through the wilderness, examining blind spiders and the curious shapes of tree trunks. A short stop was scheduled to savour some unsweetened tea in the wilderness, courtesy of our guide who had pre-packed plastic cups and a thermos flask. Mounting our buggies once again, we revved through the jungle back to the starting point. The slight drizzle made for an even more thrilling experience as the tyres traversed through the uneven, muddy ground.
Yanbaru
Come evening I checked into Yanbaru Manabi no Mori, a jungle lodge in the region of Yanbaru. Situated at the northern part of Okinawa, this subtropical zone is made up of mountains and hills covered with primeval forests. The facility offers rustic accommodation as well as packages for nightwalks, bird-watching, jungle treks, and canoe tours. In order to spot the elusive and endangered Yanbaru-kuina, we set off at 5:30 am. As the Yanbaru-kuina is a flightless bird, it can be spotted hopping along the sides of the road, looking for its morning meal. After a couple of minutes of driving around, we finally spotted one hopping from one side of the road to the other. It lounged around long enough for me to capture it on camera. The reactions I got from my tour guide, Mr. Yogi, and other locals when I shared my footage with them led me to the understanding that sightings of this bird were a rarity to be cherished. After a scrumptious breakfast at the lodge, I set out once again for a River Guide Song Walk. The 1.5 hour trek was filled with mountain streams and many different species of flora and fauna. Every few minutes, my guide would pause to pick up a leaf, examine a plant, or catch a little lizard to explain with great enthusiasm its name and function. At the end of the hike, we had to go down a steep staircase to visit the waterfall - a wonderful end that

was worth the morning walk through the forest. We were back to the lodge just in time to tuck into yet another excellent lunch prepared by the friendly ladies at the hotel’s only restaurant. In the afternoon, my guide and I set out for the much anticipated Jungle Canoe Tour. We were joined by a father together with his three young kids (who were no more than eight years old). Canoeing through the river dam felt surreal - the scenery that unfolded before me as we travelled upstream was unparalleled. Tiny jellyfish, water spiders, and an orchestra of wildlife in the dense jungle on both sides of the stream joined my tour guide and I as we meandered through the green waters. Upon reaching the tip of the stream, we parked our canoes against the rocks and waddled towards two mini waterfalls. The children occupied themselves, excitedly catching lizards and little fish in their nets, dropping them into the blue buckets that they had brought along. I could have lazed around that spot for hours, relishing the warmth of the sun while the cooling stream of water danced against my skin. Our canoe guide served us piping hot jasmine tea with sweet brown-sugar snacks, and we sat on the rocks, savouring our tea as we watched the sun hit the stream in a way that made the waters sparkle. To say that the afternoon was perfect would be an understatement. The genuine smiles and hospitality I experienced from the people on this island, the tranquillity of the northern region

Cape Town
The port city of Cape Town is home to numerous sights and sounds, including the iconic Table Mountain, prolific vineyards and villages steeped in culture and history. Towering over the city and serving as a backdrop for every postcard sold in town, the ubiquitous presence of this peculiar mountain can be felt within the boundaries of Cape Town. Visitors can ascend to its peaks via the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, which is sometimes affected by adverse weather conditions in the area, but it is certainly well worth the effort as many are enraptured by the wide-sweeping view of the entire town. After immersing yourself in the stunning sights of Table Mountain and the surrounding areas, you may wish to continue your journey to Seal Island by boarding a boat. Seal Island in False Bay is home to an estimated 60, 000 Cape fur seals. As you approach the island, you will be welcomed by hordes of seals barking and basking in the sun. However, apart from the agile seals inhabiting the area, visitors may also see sharks, dolphins, and whales in the vicinity. If you’re lucky enough, you may see a great white shark leaping out of the water, performing the famed “Air Jaws” to catch a seal.
