With June holidays just around the corner, it is the perfect time for you and your family to embark on a journey that will reinforce the bond and love you have for each other. Choosing the best place to spend your vacation can sometimes be a challenge, however, beach resorts have always been a popular pick for families who are looking for a holistic holiday. One resort that is worth a mention is Aleenta Resorts and Spas, even though my family and I vacationed in this beach retreat a few years back, I can still remember how wonderful the whole arrangement was. Aleenta is known for providing a private setting that extends beyond the walls of the pool villas. Our lavish beachfront suite came with our very own private beach, which offered an impressive view of the sunset over the Andaman Sea. The modern facilities and amenities catered to our every need, and the impeccable 24-hour butler service was otherworldly. If you are looking to host a private wedding reception, then this place is your best bet! It is the perfect location for couples to invite their closest family and friends to witness this once in a lifetime occasion. Aleenta resorts goes the extra mile by providing a wedding planner to plan your perfect day, taking care of everything from arranging the ceremony, to hiring the best photographers to commemorate the moment. It’s no wonder that Asian celebrities, Jimmy Lin and Kelly Chen held their wedding here- check out their wedding reception on YouTube. TRAVEL MALAYSIA FAIR 2016 Long lines and mad rushes for great deals to experience Malaysia like never before!

The big team from Sarawak Tourism Board

T

he 18th edition of Travel Malaysia Fair (TMF) took off with much uproar and zeal as doors opened at 11am to consumers who dashed through hall 6A of Singapore EXPO Convention & Exhibition Centre. Spanning over three days from 22nd to 24th April, the successful fair which drew in a crowd of 55,000, was organised by IBT Investment Pte Ltd and supported by Express & Excursion Bus Association (EEBA). To set the right mood for the fair and to showcase Sarawak’s cultural heritage to travellers, dances performed by ladies in ornate headgear and tasselled costumes from Sarawak Tourism Board entranced the crowds during the opening ceremony. YBhg Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Tourism Sarawak and the Chief Executive Officer of Sarawak Tourism Board was the guest-of-honour to grace the official opening of TMF 2016. He thanked the audience for their attendance, participation and engagement with all the present industry players. “Your attendance and presence means a lot to us. We (Singapore and Malaysia) are neighbours with many things in common; the nearness and ‘neighbourliness’ has created an atmosphere of togetherness and friendliness,” he noted. As a representative of Sarawak, he also spent a good amount of time highlighting how the Bornean state ought to be the next holiday destination for Singaporeans. One of the most prominent booths at the fair was indeed that of Sarawak Tourism Board. In addition to the main booth, they also had a special seminar room for both business and consumer talks, as well as a Cultural Heritage section. The latter featured baskets of bracelets made of gems and coloured beads and live demonstrations of women weaving baskets, bags, and purses. Mr. Sebastian Yap, chairman of the organising committee noted that this time round they organised a fair that benefitted both industry players as well as consumers, making it a highly beneficial experience for everyone involved. “Sellers at the Sarawak booth, meaning tour operators, hotels, and agents, managed to meet more than 25 top travel agencies in Singapore, and amassed up to 200 appointments on Friday. Of course, the second and third day was meant primarily for the consumers, to allow themselves to learn about this state. To Singaporeans, Sarawak is still quite foreign and a bit of a wonderland,” he noted. In order to provide participants with an insider’s view of Sarawak, Sarawak Tourism Board also had ongoing workshops

on Saturday and Sunday. These workshops were organised by Travel Journal and aimed to promote interest as well as to provide travellers to Sarawak with relevant and useful information. Travel agents such as WTS Travel & Tours had booths that were bustling with activity over the three days. They granted fairgoers with photo opportunities with characters such as Hello Kitty and Emmet, a LEGOLAND character, as part of their promotional tools for the Hello Kitty and Legoland theme parks in Malaysia. Many of the other travel agents such as Transtar Travel as well as Konsortium Express & Tours provided discounted tour packages to popular destinations such as Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Sabah. If you missed out on all the action, worry not! The bi-annual fair will be back again from the 14th to 16th October 2016 at Hall 6B, Singapore EXPO Convention & Exhibition Centre. See you there! Six travel workshops were held during the weekend of Travel Malaysia Fair 2016. Aiming to garner interest as well as to provide an insider’s perspective on travel and living in Sarawak, these travel talks were organised by Travel Journal and supported by Sarawak Tourism Board (STB). Each of the six workshops touched on different topics, and as a whole, provided for a holistic and informative session on travel-related activities in Sarawak. Business travellers learned about Sarawak as an international business event destination through presentations by the Sarawak Convention Bureau and Borneo Convention Centre Kuching. For those looking for serenity, mindfulness, and relaxation, Aiman Batang Ai Resort and Retreat was there to share about the 100-room resort. Travellers looking for a bit of adventure attended workshops conducted by representatives from Mulu National Park and Paradesa Borneo (Kuching cycling tours). Experts from Kayaking in Sarawak were also around to share the best ways to navigate the Sarawakian terrain. Those interested in a more culturally immersive travel experience, also heard from Sarawak Homestay representatives. The workshop with the most amount of engagement was definitely that of the Malaysia My 2nd Home Programme - the residency scheme by the Malaysian government. Over 180 people attended these talks and gained valuable insight on what to see and do while in Sarawak. At the end of each workshop, an instant lucky draw was held and a few participants walked away with a Rainforest World Music Festival coffee table book worth over USD$190. A grand draw at the end of all workshops was held, and Mr. Chandra, who attended the workshop, walked away with a three day two night stay at Aiman Batang Ai Resort, sponsored by STB. After the workshops, participants also enjoyed refreshments such as pastries and coffee whilst continuing to enquire more about Sarawak and its offerings. A participant of the Malaysia My 2nd Home Programme, Mr. Tan, found the sharing thoroughly useful as he plans for his retirement years. “The speaker provided a lot of vital information about this programme, which was what I came for! I now have a better idea on what is required if I am going to take up residency in Sarawak or other states in Malaysia. It was a very good session,” he shared. We would like to thank Sarawak Tourism Board for bringing in experts from the various resorts and tour operators to share with participants of the travel workshops beneficial information on the best ways to experience this Bornean state.

OKINAWA, THE ORIENTAL WONDER OF JAPAN Travellers of all ages flock to the tropical island of Okinawa to take a break from the bustling city life, and in some instances, seek refuge from the severe winter conditions kept secrets, and are well worth the trip for visitors looking to gain a fresh perspective of this scenic island.

Marine Sports

Chill out at Zampa Beach

T

he captivating prefecture is noteworthy for its seemingly endless and picture perfect coastlines, warm temperatures, and heart-stopping marine sports. An island visited all year round, Okinawa provides inbound and outbound travellers respite from their hectic lifestyles, and gives families an opportunity to bond over recreational activities.

Beaches

Sweeping views of pristine beaches with turquoise waters and sun-baked sands draw visitors from the nearby prefectures, and from all over the world to the southernmost island in Japan. Surrounded by lush greenery, this beautiful region is known for its subtropical climate that remains as a popular destination for anyone looking to escape chilly winters to bask in the warm Okinawan sun. Although the best beaches are situated on offshore islands, the mainland region of Okinawa is also noted to have equally breath-taking seaside and resort hotels. The

most picturesque coastlines are located in the central, northern, and southern parts of the prefecture. The Zampa Beach and Sunset Beach are family-friendly destinations that provide stunning views of sunsets, and an escape from the heat. These spots feature amenities and facilities that allow families to bond over an enjoyable and exciting outing. Another well-visited spot is the Fuchaku Beach in Onna-son village. Easily accessible from the central and southern region, the location is mainly visited by swimmers and locals throwing parties on the wide sandy shores of the beach.

Offshore Islands

Get off the beaten track and discover the offshore islands, such as Yubujima, Yonaha Maehama Beach, and Ikema Island (Heart Rock), of the Miyako Islands. Yubujima is known to be a paradise for subtropical plants, which is comprised mainly of flowering trees and 30 varieties of hibiscus. Visitors can view the diverse flora all year round and saunter around Bougainvillea and butterfly gardens. The

small island is traversed by foot or more popularly, by taking the quaint water buffalo carts. Sightseers can take in the natural beauty of the vicinity as they leisurely cross the ankle-deep waters surrounding the area via the unconventional taxi. Ranked as the third best in Japan, the Yonaha Maehama Beach, positioned in the isolated Miyako Island, is said to possess the most stunning scenery in the country. With a shoreline stretching up to seven meters, the emerald waters contrast the white sands, and serve as the perfect place for kids to cool off in the shallow waters. Every year in April, the island holds an iron-man race where over a thousand athletes gather to compete with each other. The Ikema Island (Heart Rock), located in the Miyako Islands, brings travellers from near and far to the Ikizu Beach. After becoming a filming site for the hit series, “Jun to Ai”, a Japanese morning series by NHK, the place became popular amongst locals and tourists. Other than lounging on the beach, travellers can also participate in all kinds of marine activities from diving to kayaking. However, if visitors are planning to get more out of their vacation than just a good tan, then the Flyboard is a must-do. Enjoyed by both the locals and tourists, it is the latest craze to hit the blue waters of Okinawa. The activity utilises the strong water pressure of a jet ski to manoeuvre above the surface of the ocean and even beneath it, allowing people to swim like dolphins. An instructor is always on standby to guide and advise beginners partaking in the exhilarating water sport. Intrepid adventurers looking forward to more heart-stopping action can parasail across the expansive Okinawan sky, while immersing in the jaw-dropping sights from above. It is a great and exciting way to acquire a bird’s-eye view of the region. The beaches of Okinawa are also notable for being great diving sites, and attracts divers from all over the world to its clear, blue waters. TANTALISING THAILAND: TOP PICKS FOR A BEACH GETAWAY

Be it a quick weekend escapade or a long, lazy holiday, Thailand’s got you covered. Phuket

Known as one of the world’s premier tropical beach resorts, Phuket blends extraordinary natural beauty with superb tourism facilities to ensure the perfect vacation in the sun is just an hour’s flight from Bangkok. Against a backdrop of green hills, Phuket is host to a wide selection of hotels and resorts in all categories, so you will definitely be able to find an accommodation that fits your budget. From water sports and spa treatments to devilishly delicious Thai food, it is no wonder why Phuket remains as one of the top picks for beach lovers from around the world.

Krabi

Rust-hued cliffs and emerald seas characterise Krabi – one of the most beautiful Thai provinces facing the Andaman Sea. To the northwest, you have Hat Noppharat Thara, a serene and tranquil beach which has yet to fall prey to major development or commercialisation, allowing for travellers to revel in her natural and untouched beauty. Ao Nang, on the other hand, is a beach venue with many nearby hotels, restaurants and massage huts

Ko Samui – Koh Tao, Koh Phang Ngan

Ko Samui is a tropical isle that vies with Phuket as the country’s most popular beach destination. Like Phuket, it combines natural beauty with an exceptionally good standard of hotels, spas, dining, and entertainment. Famous beaches are Chaweng and Lamai on the east coast with hugely popular bars and eateries. For those seeking a quiet getaway, smaller beaches on other parts of the island are good options. Samui was put on the travel map by backpackers seeking a back-to-nature beach escape. Its popularity has turned it into a more upmarket getaway, and as a result, the neighbouring island of Ko Pha-ngan has taken over as the favourite spot for younger travellers. Especially popular is Laem Hat Rin, a headland with beaches on both sides that get packed out

“Krabi – one of the most beautiful Thai provinces facing the Andaman Sea.” during full moon parties. The smallest and most distant of the Samui archipelago islands that offer accommodation is Ko Tao. Best known for its scuba diving sites, Ko Tao’s underwater visibility and rich marine life offers some of the finest offshore diving experiences in the whole of Thailand.

Pattaya

Located a two-hour drive away from the southeast of Bangkok, Pattaya is unrivalled as a beach resort, offering more attractions in greater profusion than any other single destination in Southeast Asia. Watersports are centred around two main beaches: Pattaya, a 3km stretch of sand and majestic bay, and Jomtien, a 6km beach situated around the heartland from Pattaya. To the north there is Wong Phrachan Beach, for those looking for a quieter spot for swimming and relaxation.

Rayong – Koh Samed

Rayong combines a lush interior with a coastline of quiet beaches and coves that are less developed than Pattaya and promises a more tranquil vacation by the sea. The best beaches are to be found near the seaside town of Ban Phe. Quality hotels are available at various locations, although comfortable beach bungalows are the typical accommodations in the area. Ko Samet is well established as a popular destination for overseas visitors and weekend excursionists from Bangkok. Ko Samet remains as a picturesque island with many attractive coves, bays, and some excellent beaches – the most stunning of which is Hat Sai Kaeo.

INDONESIA: A TREASURE TROVE WORTH EXPLORING

Blazing mornings, balmy afternoons, and chilly nights characterised this short expedition to East Java WORDS BY: SARAH SATHYAMOORTHI

T

he only destination I had visited in Indonesia was the island of Bali a couple of years back. When I received the invitation from the Indonesian Tourism Board in Singapore, I had little knowledge of what East Java had to offer, and was intoxicated with curiosity the moment I set foot in Juanda International Airport in Surabaya. During one of the many bus rides of the trip, a short stop-over was scheduled on the way to the city of Probolinggo. A couple of us hopped off the bus and walked on the

uneven tarmac in the light drizzle to a little coffee joint located at the corner of the street. A cluster of motorcycles were parked haphazardly at the front of the shop, which was furnished with long wooden benches and tables. Coffee packets lined the vibrant yellow wall and doubled up as the menu. Life in this part of the world seem to move along a little slower; conversations over coffee on a Friday afternoon and long drags off cigarettes were small marks of such pronounced leisure.

Probolinggo - BeeJay Bakau Resort

PHOTOS: MICHAEL OZAKI

Famished after a 3-hour bus ride, we tucked into a meal during our stopover at BeeJay Bakau Resort (BJBR). Located on the fringes of Probolinggo, BJBR is constructed in the midst of a mangrove swamp and offers you breathtaking views of the Bali Sea. It is tranquillity located in Probolinggo city – a labyrinth surrounded by lush greenery. This resort plucks you away from the bustle of city living

and demands your undivided attention. Accommodation can be found in the form of floating huts, and the stunning views trick your senses into believing you are in the Maldives.

Bromo Sunrise Tour

After lunch, the tour group departed to Bromo. The bus carried us uphill towards Sukapura, where we had to alight, carrying our pre-packed overnight bags to hop on to a little jeep that took us through an unlit, narrow, and bumpy road up to Hotel Sion View for the night. Travellers do not stay in this region for more than a night, as the sunrise tour and visiting Mount Bromo itself are the main attractions. As a result, many hotels in this area offer extremely basic amenities - so remember to adjust your expectations for a few hours or opt for a slightly more luxe stay. Before the trip, I had been warned multiple times of the ‘freezing cold’ temperatures up in Bromo that dips to almost 12 degrees; but after experiencing the sweltering heat of an Indonesian afternoon, I was sceptical of such chilly weather ... until I reached the hotel and

found myself whipping out both my sweater and leather jacket in a desperate attempt to keep myself warm. The tour guide instructed us to be ready by two in the morning to head out for the Bromo Sunrise Tour. An organised jeep tour included a stop at Gunung Penanjakan - the best viewing point for picture perfect views of both Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru. It was almost half-past two in the morning, and our driver dropped us off at a distance that would take about five to ten minutes to reach Penanjakan by foot. Our early drop-off was mainly due to the road being packed with jeeps and motorbikes, making it impossible for vehicles to manoeuvre through. I was breathless after the short hike, cold despite my seven layers of clothes, and tired, but anticipation and excitement trumped the

fatigue that I was feeling. If you are visiting this place over the weekend, it would mean having to share the viewpoint with hordes of tourists as well as locals, who line the barricades for the best views of the sunrise and the volcanoes. Sometime between five and six in the morning, the golden rays started to peek over the horizon ever so slowly, illuminating the landscape. Standing at Penanjakan (2,770m), overlooking the clouds, the scenery that unfolded before my eyes was almost ethereal. To my left, I could see the outline of Mount Bromo in the foreground, with Mount Semeru at the back, emitting thick, sulphurous smoke, which looked like a cloud suspended in mid-air. After snapping countless pictures in attempts to immortalise the moment, the tour group headed back down for the next leg of the tour. On the way to our jeep, we stopped to savour little knick-knacks such as Goreng Pisang, sold by street vendors and a much needed cup of piping hot white coffee at one of the many little stalls lining the road up to the viewing point.

Waroeng Bamboe Sidomulyo

Mount Bromo and Sea of Sand Tour

A short ride away and we found ourselves in the heart of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, standing on the vast plains of the ‘Sea of Sand’. I stood on the waves of the dark sand, trying to take in my surroundings. One could opt to take a 45-minute walk, or a horse ride towards the ‘Stairway to Heaven’, which will lead you to the rim of the volcano, allowing you gain a clearer view of the crater of Mount Bromo. Words alone are unable to capture the piercing beauty of Bromo. It is without a doubt an experience like none other - and that too, just a short flight away from home!

Amazing Malang

For the last portion of the trip, we headed to the city of Malang. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this city too had a cooler climate. The first order of the day in this laid back town was fruit picking. We were brought to Kusuma Agro - one of the pioneers of agricultural tourism in Indonesia, managed by the Kusuma Agrowisata hotel group. I walked through Apple, Orange, and Pink Guava

plantations in the cool morning - twisting fresh fruit, plucking them from trees, and biting into crunchy goodness on the spot. Located a 1000 meters above sea level, the chilly weather, scenic mountain views, and picturesque apple orchards made for an idyllic morning in Malang. For an authentic Javanese dining experience, we stopped by Waroeng Bamboe Sidomulyo, a bamboo restaurant for lunch. The eatery is built around a rectangular pond, and provided a refreshing and rustic concept. Short tables and mats humbly furnished the place, and patrons had to remove their footwear before sitting on the floor to dine. The meal was not foreign to my Singaporean palate - grilled fish, steamed white rice, and tempeh were but some of the many excellent dishes that were served. The entire experience left me feeling as though I had just been invited into a house for a meal. Malang moves at a leisurely pace and is in the process of developing its tourism sector.

Current attractions include a theme-park (Jawa Timur Park 2) and a transportation museum, Museum Angkut, which is bound to be a treat for families with young children. This short trip to Indonesia exceeded my expectations in every aspect, and left me with memories of scenic views that were unparalleled in every measure. Indonesia is definitely a treasure trove worth digging deep into. For more information, log on to http:// www.indonesia.travel/
