Mr. Suman of India Tourism with Cecilia

n 12th August 2016, at the Singapore Expo Hall 3, the opening ceremony of the second edition of NATAS 2016 kicked off to a rambunctious start - with an auspicious lion dance performance and an Indonesian pendet dance. His excellency I Gede Ngurah Swajaya, the Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Singapore, was the guest-of-honour to grace the occasion. The presence of various cruise operators as well as travel agents who offered tour packages to exotic destinations such as North Korea (Universal Travel), Egypt (Albatross World Travel & Tours), and Israel (Insight Vacations), was a clear indication that NATAS anticipated the needs and wants of its travel-goers. Of course, those looking to head to crowd favourites such as Italy, South Korea and Japan, or to the nearby lands of Thailand and Indonesia, were able to secure packages as well as up-to-date information from travel agents and national tourism organisations. Besides travel agents and travel-related organisations, there were plenty of food stalls present to give participants a taste of what they can expect on their travels to the various countries around the world. Mouth-watering, cinnamon-sprinkled Spanish doughnuts took you to Spain and chunks of slow-cooked meat wrapped in pita bread momentarily transported you to a Middle-Eastern country. With over 55,000 visitors attending the NATAS travel

TRAVEL REVOLUTION FAIR 2016: KEEPING THE SPIRIT OF TRAVEL ALIVE The biggest travel fair returns with more exclusive deals and redeemable travel-related merchandises.

The team from Travel Journal

W

ith more and more people travelling all over the world, it’s no surprise why the travel fair season draws an overwhelming crowd from every corner of Singapore. Besides offering countless travel deals and packages to countries near and far, trusted and prominent travel agents come together during this time to pacify crowds struck by wanderlust. The return of the bi-annual Travel Revolution Fair (TRF) was a testament to the fact that more people are interested in travelling, going as far as to utilising the weekends and holidays to either plan a short getaway, or an extended vacation with their loved ones. This year’s TRF attracted over 111,000 visitors between 19th and 21st of August 2016 - a record-high since its inception in April 2015, to the Sands Expo and Convention Centre. TRF once again outdid itself by providing attendees with exclusive deals, which when booked with certain credit cards, allowed visitors to redeem exciting gifts such as travel luggages. Promotions and other exhilarating credit card privileges enhanced the experience of the travel fair for visitors attending the fair. A new and welcomed treat in this edition of TRF was the quirky mascot parade. Children and adults gathered around to snap pictures of adorable and larger-than-lifesized mascots that represented specific travel agents and national tourism organisations. Part of the entourage was an extremely realistic-looking raptor, which made its way through the crowded fair, much to the delight of young children and amusement of adults. The dinosaur mascot was used to promote Dinosaur Planet, an amusement park in Bangkok, Thailand. A wildly fierce and energetic dance performance by Taiwan Tourism Bureau captured the attention of the crowd gathered in front of the Taiwan booth, stopping travel-goers in their tracks, and holding their undivided attention for a good three minutes. Tourism Authority of Thailand once again enticed visitors to their ornately decorated booth with a free and relaxing Thai massage by professional masseuses.

Mr. William Low of Tourism Authority of Thailand with Cecilia

Ms. Kay Swee Pin, President of SOTAA, with Cecilia

Ms. Alicia Seah and Emma Chen of Dynasty Travel with Cecilia and Hui Ling

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism for Indonesia brewed fresh cups of piping hot Indonesian coffee to re-energise attendees. Free photo prints were available at the Okinawa booth, where you could pose against an Okinawan pagoda backdrop, and get a printed copy of your photos on the spot. Travel workshops held by i-Weekly provided a deeper insight into travel to destinations such as Alaska, Iceland, Bhutan and Fiji. Besides conducting riveting travel workshops, i-Weekly also organised an introductory lesson on photography and invited Canon to deliver a presentation entitled, ‘How To Create Your Visual Story’, which enabled attendees to learn everything from camera basics to composition techniques.

“TRF once again outdid itself by providing attendees with exclusive deals, which when booked with certain credit cards, allowed visitors to redeem exciting gifts such as travel luggages.” There were goodies galore for patrons of the fair. As an associated media of TRF, Travel Journal gave away goodie bags to attendees who signed up for a free subscription. Additionally, there was a photo booth in which participants could take photos by posing against the Taj Mahal backdrop with the quirky props. From travel adaptors to luggage tags, readers and new subscribers of the publication walked away with a bunch of handy travel accessories. Those who purchased packages with various travel agents could also be seen redeeming shiny new luggage bags from the various banks present at the fair. INDIA’S NORTHEASTERN HIGHLIGHTS

From the dramatic landscapes that dominate the picturesque state of Sikkim to the abundant and rich wildlife of Assam, northeastern India offers remarkable sights that encompass the best of India’s natural features. snow leopard, musk deer, Himalayan Tahr, and red panda. Amongst these mammals, yaks are commonly found roaming the alpine zones of the region - they are mainly reared for their milk, meat and utilised as a means of transport.

INDIA

D

ubbed the “Seven Sisters”, the seven notable northeastern states of India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, are connected to the rest of India via a strip of land in West Bengal called the Siliguri Corridor or “Chicken’s Neck”. Although the northeastern states of India aren’t as heavily promoted as other parts of India, states such as Sikkim, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura are known for their distinguishable charms and charismatic wonders.

Dominated by the mighty Brahmaputra River, the state of Assam is the gateway to the northeastern part of India. The state is reputed for its unspoiled natural beauty, substantial biodiversity, tea plantations, and friendly people. Assam comprises of five national parks including the World Heritage Sites of Kaziranga and Manas, and 20 Wildlife and Bird Sanctuaries. Over the centuries, people of various ethnic, religious and linguistic backgrounds were drawn to the fertile valleys of Assam, and have adopted them as their homes. The people of Assam come from different walks of life and as such, a mosaic of various cultures are practiced in the region. People living in Assam are usually comprised of racial backgrounds including Austro-Asiatic, Indo-Aryan and Tibeto-Burman.

Sikkim

Snow-capped mountains, placid lakes, and thriving tea leaves that carpet the hills of the Temi Tea Garden are just some of the natural highlights that encompass the stunning state of Sikkim. The state experiences five seasons: winter, summer, spring, autumn, and a monsoon season between June and September. Sikkim’s diverse climate, ranging from subtropical in the south, to the tundra in the north, gives life to a thriving ecosystem consisting of a myriad of flora and fauna. The lower altitudes of Sikkim are home to a multitude of plant life such as orchids, figs, laurel, bananas, sal trees and bamboo, which grow in the Himalayan subtropical broadleaf forests. In the more temperate elevations, an abundance of oaks, chestnuts, maples, birches, alders, and magnolias can be found in the Eastern Himalayan broadleaf forests. Additionally, the alpine-type vegetation in the region has produced an optimal environment for the wildlife population, including the

over two–thirds of the geographical areas of Manipur are hill tracts covered in lush green forests. Some of the most beautiful and precious blooms of Siroi and other colourful orchids flourish in their natural habitat in Manipur’s alpine forests. The rich wildlife of Manipur includes mammals such as the hoolock gibbon, slow loris, spotted linsang, and more notably, Mrs. Hume’s pheasant - the state bird of Manipur. The pheasant was named to commemorate Mary Ann Grindall Hume, wife of a British naturalist.

Nagaland

As one of the smallest region in India, the mostly mountainous state of northeast India is inhabited by 16 major tribes. Each tribe is unique in character and has adopted its own distinct customs, languages and clothing. However, English is predominantly used for verbal exchanges and since the British Raj era, most of the population has adopted Christianity as their main religion. Agriculture is the most important economic activity and the principal crops of Nagaland include rice, corn, millets, etc. Like its counterparts, Nagaland is rich in flora and fauna. About one-sixth of Nagaland is under the cover of tropical and subtropical evergreen forests—including palms, bamboo, and rattan as well as timber and mahogany forests. Elephants, leopards, bears, many species of monkeys thrive across the state’s forests.

Tripura

Kaziranga National Park in Assam is home to more than 70% of the one-horned rhinoceros in the world.

Manipur

Located in a lush green corner of North East India, Manipur is an oval shaped valley surrounded by nine ranges of green hills combined with cascading rapids, carpets of flowers and lazy lakes. The state dominates the culture scene in India; the ethnic population of Manipur showcase their heritage and culture through their folklore, dances, indigenous games, etc. Blessed with an amazing variety of flora and fauna,

Bordered by Bangladesh (East Bengal) and the Indian states of Assam and Mizoram to the East, Tripura is the third-smallest state in the country. The Kokborok speaking Tripuri people are the major group among 19 tribes and many subtribes. The area of modern Tripura was ruled for several centuries by the Tripuri dynasty. The state’s rich history has contributed to the distinctive Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. The impressive Ujjayanta Palace, Gedu Mia’s Mosque are some of the notable attractions in the region. Tripura is also known for having the highest number of primate species found in any Indian state. Although Tripura is an agrarian society, the country’s service sector is the largest contributor to the state’s gross domestic product. For more information, visit http:// www.incredibleindia.org

RECONNECT WITH NATURE AT ECO GREEN PARK Let this park redefine what it means to learn while on holiday

E

co Green Park is located in the charming city of Batu, East Java. The theme park is located on a hill town (which is at least 800m above sea level), on the gentle slopes of Panderman Hills Kota Wisata Batu; this means that patrons enjoy pleasantly cool temperatures, fresh air, and breath-taking views during their visit. Eco Green Park is one of the newest additions to the range of parks under the Jawa Timur Park Group’s belt. Admission tickets to this wonderland start at just (SGD 4.13 or IDR 40,000, weekday rates). Dedicated to engage visitors as well as to educate them about the ecosystem, the park was built to instil wonder as you stroll through perfectly manicured gardens and pose with replicas of ornately designed temples. You also have the option of renting an e-bike at the entrance to cover this large park which has over 35 different attractions! It is an educational park that doubles up as a conservation effort for many species of birds and animals. There are even feeding parks that allows visitors to interact with certain animals such as Koi fish, sun parakeets, and the emu. Eco Green Park is also a great way to learn about farming processes – knowledge of which is almost absent with most children (and perhaps, adults) living the 21st century cosmopolitan life. Eco Green Park enables those who arrive for educational tours with the opportunity to have novel experiences such as celery gardening and rice planting. Taking

on the role as farmers, they will go through the process of planting and harvesting their crops. Visit the creepy crawlies at the Insectarium, the ducks at the Duck Kingdom, or catch a 3D movie at the Dome Multimedia. Remember to bring an extra set of clothing if you plan on splashing around the designated wet park. There is also a food court inside the park, ready to sate the appetite that you would have worked up while exploring this place. The park is also littered with innovative structures that have been built with used materials, a move to incite and encourage thoughts about recycling; a life-sized elephant statue comprising of used computers is one such eclectic piece. With tour guides to assist you during your exploration, Eco Green Park taps into a form of educational tourism that allows patrons to learn whilst having fun! A noteworthy award that this park has received is the Certificate of Excellence 2016 by TripAdvisor. This award is attained by properties that have been consistently achieving outstanding reviews on the website. So don’t just take our word for it when we say Eco Green Park is a must-visit, check out reviews by the many who can’t wait to visit this place once more! hether it’s enjoying panoramic views of Nagasaki atop Mt. Inasa or exploring the disarmingly charming town of Jiufen in Taiwan, Asia’s distinctive culture, and vivid history distinguishes the East from its Western and European counterparts. In addition to its modest, yet notable man-made structures, countries such as Japan, China, South Korea and Taiwan offers travellers with mesmerising views of crystal clear lakes, and soaring peaks that hold a spiritual significance to millions of people. JAPAN

Sakurajima

Situated in the smack middle of Kagoshima Bay, Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan. The prominent geographic feature constantly smokes and minor eruptions often take place multiple times a day. Before Sakurajima underwent a powerful eruption in 1914, the volcano used to be an island in the bay before the flow of lava from the eruption connected the land to the Osumi Peninsula in the East. The close proximity of the volcano keeps the land fertile due to the rich, volcanic soil; visitors can observe the growth of grasses and short plants from the Lava Trail that has taken place since the eruption that occurred about 100 years ago. The volcano is easily accessible by the ferries that run between the Kagoshima Port and the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal.

Hot Sand Bath

The unconventional spa treatment literally buries its visitors with a generous amount of warm, black sand, which are produced from the underground springs. Guests usually stay in their baths for 10 to 15 minutes as the rising heat from the sand opens up the pores, and acts as an exfoliant when they wash themselves in the warm showers provided in the facility. Although there are unisex sand baths, Beppu-kaihin Sunayu also has traditional onsen baths that segregates guests by gender. The sand bath is only a five-minute walk from Beppu Daigaku Station.

Jigoku Steam Workshop

Get a chance enjoy one of the oldest and famous cooking style that has been practiced since the Edo period. In the Jigoku Steam Workshop, visitors will be able to participate in Jigoku Mushi, a cooking method in Beppu that utilises the scalding hot spring steam to cook food. Participants can cook their own food - not before being forewarned about the powerful force of the onsen (hot spring) steam. Travellers will not only get to partake in the unique experience, but also get to savour the scrumptious and satisfying meal they cooked. Visitors may also take a drink from the spring water drinking fountain, treat themselves to a foot bath or a foot steam bath for free.

Mt. Inasa-yama

Located 333 meters above sea level, Mt. Inasa is known for offering panoramic views of the Japanese city, Nagasaki. Visitors usually make their way up to the round observation station situated on the top of the hill to indulge in the breathtaking views of the beautiful harbour, which is sometimes called “the port of cranes”. Besides offering a remarkable views of the city, the site also provides distant views of Unzen, Amakusa, or even the Goto-retto Islands on a clear day. The best way to enjoy a bird’s eye view of the surrounding region would be to take the Nagasaki Ropeway, which will bring visitors to the summit of Inasa-yama. Visitors weary from travel can always consider tucking in for the night at the many Japanese-style ryokan (inns) and hotels located near the halfway point to the top of Mt. Inasa-yama.

SOUTH KOREA

Petite France

As the name aptly suggests, Petite France is just that, a slice of polished French culture in the form of a cultural village situated in the Korean countryside. The buildings resemble life-sized doll-houses out of a child’s drawing - archetypal pastel houses nestled close together, which serve as impossibly pretty backdrops for your travel photographs. The buildings aren’t just for show - they double up as lodging spaces too. Fans of Korean drama serials may find this location familiar - many popular episodes of romantic scenes have been filmed at Petite France. So for a dash of whimsy, head to this picturesque village with a loved one in arm to tuck into some French food, enjoy a marionette dance performance, or even visit one of the many exhibition halls.

Lotte World Theme Park

Hangang River Cruise

Vivaldi Park

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge

Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain Glass Skywalk

Zhangjiajie Tianzi Mountain

Set aside a full day to experience the thrills of Lotte World Theme Park. On top of being home to the world’s largest indoor theme park, the spot also boasts an outdoor theme park called Magic Island, a luxury hotel, a Korean Folk Museum, several shopping malls, departmental stalls, sports facilities as well as a movie theatre! This extremely popular theme park is great way to spend time with the family and to keep children occupied for hours. As any theme parks in the world, it’s best to travel during the non-peak season so as to avoid hordes of tourists flocking to get in on the fun and excitement.

Taking the Hangang River Cruise is the best way to explore this South Korean attraction. The river cruise is comprised of various themed ships including a pirate theme for children and a K-Culture cruise for Hallyu fans. The K-Culture cruise engages passengers with live performances such as the Pang Show, which entertains passengers with dance, music and drum performances. In addition to being a perfect way to spend time with the family, the cruise is also a popular attraction among couples - the romantic ambience of the river coupled with the on-board entertainment provides an exceptionally unforgettable experience. The river cruise also offers special cruises in spring - flower cruise, and in autumn - migratory bird cruise.

Famed for providing a wide range of accommodation options and daytime and nighttime skiing, the Vivaldi Park is a crowd pleaser among skiers. The ski resort also provides easy accessibility by offering condos that are directly connected to the ski slopes. Daemyung Vivaldi Park Ski World is thought to be one of the best ski resorts in the world as it guarantees the highest quality of snow on all of its thirteen slopes. This not only enhances the skiing experience, but also ensures that everyone from beginners to experts enjoy a great skiing experience. The quality of the ski resort has even made it a popular destination to host professional competitions and ski-demonstrations.

CHINA

Phoenix Ancient Town

It’s a township that encapsulates mystery, elegance and primitive simplicity. Steeped in history, the Phoenix Ancient Town is one of the most popular ancient towns in the Hunan province. Surrounded by mountains, the Tuojiang river runs through the town reflecting the beautiful architecture on the placid emerald green waters. The perfect harmony of both the natural and man-made features complement the scenery so well that at first glance, the town looks like it’s right out of a traditional Chinese painting. As one strolls along the alleyways paved with flagstones, it’s not difficult to spot the tinge of modernity peeking out at the corners of this historical and cultural city. When night falls, lights adorn the various buildings in the town, showcasing an illuminated spectacle that offers a different perspective of the city.

As the world’s highest and longest glass bridge, the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge provides breathtaking views of the canyon. Located 300 meters above the canyon, the glass bottomed bridge offers thrilling sights of the gorge below - an experience not meant for the weak-hearted. The bridge is open to 8,000 visitors daily, and will soon entice adrenaline junkies with exhilarating activities such as bungee-jumping and ziplining. Resting on the edge of two cliffs, the 430-meter-long bridge is made of 99 panels of clear glass. However, it’s important to note that wearing high heels is not permitted on the bridge.

If the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge doesn’t get your palms sweaty, the Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain Glass Skywalk might. The glass walkway is built on the side of a cliff over 1,400 meters above sea level on the Tianmen Mountain. The 60-meter path is a mustsee tourist attraction on the west side of the mountain and is part of the cliffhanging walkway that stretches along the Ghost-Valley Cave. Additionally, a large temple built in the Tang Dynasty is situated on the summit of the mountain. The skywalk offers panoramic views of the Hunan Province and as such provides photographers with a perfect opportunity to take amazing photos.

Located in the northern part of Wulingyuan Scenic Area in Hunan Province, the Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve is one of the four scenic spots that covers an area of 67 square kilometers. Tianzi Mountain provides stunning views of the surrounding peaks, which prominently stand over the skyline. The impressive view of the rising peaks has given the spot another name: ‘the Monarch of the Peak Forest’. Equipped with facilities such as cable cars and 100 natural viewing platforms, the attraction provides a convenient way for travellers to admire the awe-inspiring landscape with minimum effort. Unsurprisingly, the stone towers of the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, in the Northern Hunan Province, was the main inspiration for the 2009 American epic science fiction film, “Avatar”, directed by James Cameron.

TAIWAN

Jiufen

Be spirited away by the spellbinding sights of the decommissioned gold mining mountain town of Jiufen, founded during Japanese occupation, the region is a tight collection of alleys with rich heritage and culture. Due to its positioning - on the side of a mountain, the quaint town offers views that are simply out of this world. Remnants of Japanese architecture reflect the long history of Taiwan. Wander around the maze of alleys and discover fabulous food, handicrafts and cafes. Catch a glimpse of the iconic buildings lined with red lanterns, which inspired Hayao Miyazaki’s Academy Award winning film, “Spirited Away”. Moving through alleyways and navigating around the small town during peak season might not appeal to most who want to avoid crowds, but even during its busiest months, this town still maintains its charismatic lure.

Shifen

Shifen is a notable stop along Pingxi Railway Line, which was originally built to transport coal. The region is known for the notable Shifen Waterfall, a natural attraction located in the Pingxi District, which draws crowds from all over the world with its dazzling stream of rainbow as the 20-meter-tall waterfall splashes into the lake. Another tourist spot is the Shifen Old Street, retaining the nostalgic charm of yesteryear, this lively hub takes visitors back in time with its rich offerings of local delights, and sights of steam trains huffing and puffing along the tracks. Additionally, releasing a painted sky lantern, whereby visitors write their wishes with calligraphy, on the tracks has become an increasingly popular activity among travellers.

Taroko National Park

Established in 1986, the Taroko National Park has been a protected reserve in the northern section of the surging Central Mountain Range and the eastern coast of the island. Framed by sheer seaside cliffs and majestic inland mountain peaks, the national park captivates travellers with its marble-walled canyons and its abundant and diverse vegetation. It’s no wonder that Taiwan was once called Ilha Formosa, which means beautiful island. The Taroko National Park is also a haven for hikers as it provides a number of routes for travellers, one of the gentlest and notable path would be Shakadang Trail, built along the river cliff the route is also known as the “Mysterious Valley Trail”. Besides providing stunning views of the natural environment, the park also houses the Eternal Spring Shrine, a majestic shrine built to commemorate workers who died during the construction of the Central Cross-island Highway.

Cingjing Farm

Cingjing Farm is the perfect place for travellers looking to gain some respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. Cingjing Farm is comparable to a paradise in the mountains, the alluring landscape, fresh air and the enchanting starry night captivates travellers from all over the world. A famed attraction in the region would be the Green Green Grasslands, where visitors will be able to see herds of sheep and horses up-close and interact with them. Another equally popular attraction would be, “Taiwan Little Switzerland”, which exudes a Northern European atmosphere. Walkways lined with vibrant coloured flowers and lush, green plants evoke a serene and calm feeling. Consider hiking along nature trails such as Sunset Trails and the 499-Steps Trails, which showcases the stunning beauty of the surrounding greenery.
