Mid-Autumn Festival SINGAPORE
The Mid-Autumn Festival not only marks the end of the autumn harvest, but is also a time for families and friends to come together to give thanks to the gods. In addition to being an important occasion to the Chinese people, it is also the time when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. This vibrant celebration takes place on the 15th day of the 8th Chinese lunar month every year. Chinese families come together and indulge in some tasty mooncakes, which symbolise the reunion of family and friends. Although there are many stories that are associated with this festival, the most notable one is the story of Chang Er, who drank her husband’s elixir of immortality to free her people from his tyrannical rule. http://www.yoursingapore.com/

ndia is known for many things, be it the great Himalayan peaks or the vast Indian Ocean, this country offers compelling sights steeped in history and beauty. Besides its wondrous offerings, the land was also the birthplace of Buddha, founder of Buddhism. Although his teachings originated in India, Buddhism spread through much of Asia and is still practiced by millions to this day. India has a rich Buddhist Heritage with several important sites associated with the life of Lord Buddha. These places are essential pilgrimage sites for followers of Buddhism who come to visit these sacred sites from all over the world. With the aim to showcase and project the Buddhist heritage and pilgrim sites of India, the International Buddhist Conclave (IBC) is going to be held in Delhi, Varanasi, Sarnath and Bodhgaya from 2nd October to 6th October, 2016. Organised to promote tourism of Buddhist sites in the country, this marketing event will be attended by scholars, international tour operators, opinion makers and media personalities. The IBC will include talks, presentations, meditation sessions, Buddha walks, cultural shows, networking, business meetings, panel discussions and a technical visit to Buddhist sites at Varanasi, Sarnath and Bodhgaya. The event will give participants an opportunity to promote pilgrimage itineraries of Buddhist sites in the country to overseas visitors. The IBC is an initiative developed by the Indian government to improve the experience of pilgrims and tourists interested in learning about the Buddhist heritage. The elaborate tour of the pilgrim sites located all along the trail will effectively showcase Buddha’s journey through India. Participants will learn about the place where prince Siddhartha or Gautama Buddha was born to his mother queen Maya Devi on her way from Kapilavastu. The renowned birthplace is now situated at Lumbini, near the town of Kapilavastu, close to the Indian border. The “footprints of Buddha” circuit will allow participants to follow the journey of Buddha, from the time he renounced his life as a prince, to reaching enlightenment before attaining parinirvana, which refers to achieving nirvana after death. At Kapilavastu, Buddha married the princess Yasodara at the age of sixteen, after finishing his education. At 29, he renounced his ordinary life and immersed himself in his studies. During this time he studied under many wellknown teachers, scholars and gurus to fully comprehend the

However, Buddha was not satisfied with his lessons and no one was able to satisfy or quench his thirst for knowledge. Pilgrims from all over the world seek places visited by Buddha, these include Sarnath, Bodhgaya/Mahabodhi Temple, Niranjana River, Sarasvati, Vaishali and finally Kushinagar- where Buddha took his last breath. WHET YOUR APPETITE FOR OKINAWA Here are a few of the delicious and noteworthy Okinawan dishes that will leave you craving for more, long after your vacation has ended.
I
t is a well-known fact that Singaporeans take food very seriously (what with hawker stalls receiving Michelin stars!). So when it comes to exploring the world for great flavours, our sophisticated palates have some pretty high expectations. For a truly indulgent experience, filled with flavour and nutrition, head to the tranquil island of Okinawa. If there is one thing I learned from my trip there, it is that Okinawans love their vegetables. Every meal comes with at least three different types of side-dishes (most of it being a form of greens, cooked in a variety of tasty styles). This could be a reason why most of the older folks I interacted with seemed to have a certain vigour about them. It is no wonder they are a population with one of the highest life expectancies!
Agu Pork
Pork is a very common meat accompaniment in Okinawa, and you will find this option at almost every eatery, served together with your choice of rice or noodles. The pork is from a traditional breed called the Ryukyu pig (Ryukyu was the name of the Okinawan kingdom before the Japanese prefectures were set recognised) called “Agu”. Known for its succulent and tasty meat, this Okinawan pork is usually boiled to perfection before being served. Many of the pork dishes that I tried also did not carry the intense pork flavour that most shun away from. The best part about Agu pork is that it is low in cholesterol and fat - so indulge in the scrumptious pork belly and ribs without feeling guilty!
Okinawa Soba
Okinawan Soba is different from the traditional thick soba noodles. Unlike traditional Japanese soba, these Okinawan noodles look like the thinner and crinkled version of the udon. Instead of using traditional buckwheat, wheat is used to produce Okinawa’s soba. This dish is usually accompanied with a pork-flavoured broth together with a few slices of
tender pork strips and other ingredients such as fishcake. The restaurant that I visited during my trip, served up a large bowl of soba together with a bowl of Japanese rice as well as Mozuku Su, which is an Okinawan-styled vinegar seaweed. Mozuku Su, a dish with a rather slimy texture, seemed to a popular accompaniment in many restaurants and hotels during my time on the island.
Goya Champuru
Another local favourite are the Champuru dishes, which translates into ‘stir-fry’. A common Champuru vegetable dish would be the Goya Champuru, which is stir-fried bitter gourd. The dish is usually served with ingredients such as tofu and eggs.
Awamori (Okinawan Liquor)
Awamori is a clear, colourless liquor unique to Okinawa. Made from thai rice and rice malt, this concoction is Japan’s oldest distilled liquor. Stored in handmade earthen pots, Awamori is aged to improve its flavour. Drop by the distillery to learn more about the fascinating process of making Awamori, and head to the well-stocked store to taste the different flavoured Awamori. For more information, log on to http://beokinawa.jp/ or visit the Okinawa booth (B03*) at Travel Revolution Fair! *There will be nine direct flights during the school holiday season ( Marine 19th Nov - 31st Dec). T
he Italian cruise line introduces its home country in more ways than one, as Costa Cruises takes passengers to the floating city of Venice. Discover the famed Carnival of Venice on board, and be enthralled by sights of intricate Venetian masks and elegant costumes while indulging in sumptuous Italian cuisine. Costa Cruises Asia celebrates its 10th Anniversary in Asia. Over the past decade, Costa Cruises Asia has maintained customer-first principles and focused on innovation and excellence. To mark this momentous milestone, the cruise line is giving away exclusive Costa suitcases (while stocks last) to those who book a cruise holiday - remember to get more details from your respective travel agents! The cruise line is also introducing passengers from Singapore to a truly Italian cruising experience with its “Italy at Sea” concept. Whether it is the amenities, décor, food or activities, the Costa Victoria has taken a unique approach to provide an Italian experience without you having to step on its Italian shores. Once on board, Costa guests will be taken on a remarkable adventure to explore the floating Italian empire. Passengers will also have the privilege to explore the mystery behind the City of Water’s festive occasion, and the fascinating European arts and humanities through a spectacular Carnival of Venice at Sea! The annual festival is one of the world’s most magnificent carnivals, and originates from the victory of “Repubblica della Serenissima” (the ancient name of Venice) in a war against Ulrico, Patriarch of Aquileia, in 1162. Today, tourists from all over the world flock to Venice to participate in the celebrations. The event captivates travellers with beautiful masks, elaborate costumes, parades, and performances by musicians, acrobats, clowns, magicians and puppeteers. Adopting Venice’s historical festival on board, Costa Victoria will play out the Carnival of Venice theme to bring guests a one of a kind exotic cruise holiday experience. Guests will be welcomed by people dressed in distinct Venetian costumes, as well as be treated to a traditional Italian cuisine when they get on board. Besides getting passengers into the spirit of the festivities, the cruise line will provide guests with an opportunity to partake in a variety of activities. From enjoying
the ‘Carnival of Venice’ programmes to indulging in a fourcourse Italian dinner, the cruise will offer an exciting line-up for everyone. As part of Costa’s theatre entertainment, guests will be able to enjoy a Michael Jackson tribute entitled “Feel the beat”, which will showcase exciting rhythms from around the world, with modern twist. Guests will also be entertained by the “Duo Lafracci” comedy show, as well as “Sapori d’ Italia”, featuring Italy’s most famed songs and dance. Those travelling with children will be delighted to know that the cruise line has Venetian themed entertainment to keep children occupied for hours. Children will have the option to explore the culture of Venice through mask painting, attending costume making workshops or recreating popular Venetian dishes at the various cooking classes held on board by master chefs. These activities will both stimulate and provide an immersive experience for young minds. Between October 22, 2016 and January 4, 2017, Costa Victoria will take passengers on 20 trips from Singapore. Situated in southwestern Germany, Heidelberg is known for its many beautiful streets, alleyways and the famed Haeidelberg Schloss (castle), which is an important Renaissance structure. Perched on a hill above the picturesque town, the Heidelberg Castle comprises of several buildings surrounding an inner courtyard. The castle is as old as the city itself. Although the first parts of the castle were built around 1300, it was destroyed by lightning and was partially restored over several centuries. Sitting just below the castle is Altstadt, which translates to old town, and extends along the Neckar River for a mile. If the unique combination of old and new buildings does not captivate travellers, a leisurely stroll along the narrow streets might. The market squares, and other places of interest offer a variety of activities and entertainment options to satisfy a seasoned traveller. Besides being home to distinguishable buildings and ruins, the city was also named the UNESCO City of Literature, for having a vibrant creative scene.
31 | Travel Journal | Issue 11 | September 2016 of a postcard. The capital of Tyrol offers a stunning view of the Alps, and has long since been a destination for winter sports. In addition to providing activities in both the colder and warmer months of the year, the town is also notable for its imperial and contemporary architecture. One of the more popular attractions in Innsbruck is the Golden Roof, also known as Goldenes Dachl, which is both a landmark and a symbol of the city. Built with 2,657 fire-gilded copper shingles, this structure served as a lodge, hosting performances and tournaments. An outstanding feature of Innsbruck, is its 800-year-old, Old Town. The city centre brings sights of buildings that have adopted a classic Austrian hybrid of Gothic and Baroque architectural styles. Old Town encapsulates the long history of the region and charms visitors with its historic attractions.
Lucerne
Nestled amid snow-capped mountains, a placid lake and lush greenery that stretches as far as the eye can see, Lucerne captures the image of a fairy tale Swiss town. As an ideal starting point for many travellers - the gateway to
central Switzerland - the city has attractions that captivate visitors with its modest yet rich offerings of age-old monuments and structures such as the Lion Monument. Erected in the 1880s, the Lion Monument was created to honour the valour of mercenary soldiers from Central Switzerland. The monument - of a giant dying lion commemorates Swiss soldiers who sacrificed their lives while serving the French king Louis XVI during the French Revolution. A Latin inscription is also carved into the sandstone wall, like an incantation, it reads: HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI, which means “To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss”. Records of the dead, such as their names and death toll, can be found on the memorial.
Paris
Paris is a timeless city that conjures up images of charming street side cafes, iconic structures, and worldrenowned branded stores. For years, the capital of France has enchanted visitors with its romantic ambience and architectural wonders. This cosmopolitan city attracts numerous travellers from all over the world to embrace
its rich culture, fine cuisine, and influential art pieces. Noted for being the world’s most beautiful avenue, the Avenue des Champs-Elysees is an attraction as great as the iconic Eiffel Tower itself. Both Parisians and tourists stroll along these picturesque streets and take in the sights and sounds of the city. This two-kilometre stretch is situated between the Place de la Concorde and the Arc de Triomphe. Famous restaurants, luxury boutiques, and flagship stores are lined along this street. A visit to the Avenue des Champs-Elysees isn’t complete without a climb to the Arc de Triomphe - a triumphal arch that stands imposingly to commemorate the soldiers and generals who lost their lives fighting for France during the Napoleonic Wars. Situated between the Champs-Elysees and the Tuileries Palace, the Place de la Concorde is home to age-old structures steeped in French history. During the French revolution, this historic site had a guillotine installed - for a couple of years - in the middle of the square, where many famous people - such as King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette - were put to the death. There is also a 3200-year-old obelisk, called the Luxor Obelisk, which was gifted to the Louis Philippe by the Viceroy of Egypt in 1833.
Brussels
As Belgium’s most fascinating capital, Brussels has become a hotspot for weekend getaways and holidays in the region and beyond. Travellers flock to this region to be a part of its vibrant and eclectic mix of style, art and design. The city is also presenting itself as a hub of international fashion as it attracts big names to its doorsteps, with home-grown designers gaining global recognition for their talents. Apart from bringing the best of Belgian fashion, art, and culture, Brussels is known for its museums, parks, restaurants and bars. A notable place of interest is the Royal Palace of Brussels, which is the King’s administrative residence and main workplace. Since 1965, the Brussels Palace has been open to the public every summer after the National Holiday of 21st July until September. Another tourist sight is the Atomium, the symbol of Brussels and Belgium. This unique piece of architecture was built for the World Fair of Brussels in 1958. Visitors looking for a good photo opportunity can head to the upper sphere, which offers spectacular, panoramic views of the city of Brussels. An equally intriguing sight is the Manneken-Pis, a small statue of a naked boy urinating into a water fountain. This statue is not only quirky, but also represents the rebellious spirit of the city of Brussels. Champs-Elysees in Paris, France
Amsterdam
As Netherlands’ capital city, Amsterdam is a place steeped in artistic heritage that has immortalised artworks made by legends such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. One of the best ways to experience Amsterdam, would be to explore the region on a bicycle. In fact, to accommodate cyclists, the city has constructed bicycle paths. The city’s legacies also include its elaborate canal system, narrow houses with gabled facades and its many noteworthy museums. The Dam Square is a prominent town square in Amsterdam. The site is usually packed with people from all over and houses a number of food stalls, restaurants and shops. However, getting a seat or two to enjoy an afternoon lunch may take a while. The square is a popular venue that hosts many exciting events, some of which includes a carnival in spring, and street performances in the summer months. Of all the attractions featured in the Dam Square, the Royal Palace of Amsterdam is a jewel amidst its counterparts. Standing at the very centre of Amsterdam, the imposing and impressive Royal Palace once served as the residence for the Dutch Royalty.
