“At the end of the day production comes down to what you feed the cows – you can get any cow to produce 700kgms but a lot, particularly New Zealand genetics, won’t last for many lactations. We need high producing cows which last, and we are getting that. Their udders don’t drop off after two lactations.

“BW doesn’t worry us because we’re not selling the herd. We are after production from placid, well conformed, moderately sized animals which will last in the herd.” Reg & Hayley Davey, Waikato
Waikato dairy farmers, Reg and Hayley Davey, bought their original herd from Kaukapakapa around 22 years ago. “It was a good NZ genetics herd,” they said “but, after milking them for a season or so, we had some concerns about their udder conformation. Udders were blowing out, and quite a few cows had poor suspensory ligaments which became evident when they got a bit of age. These issues impacted on the time they spent in the herd. “We expect cows to last 10 seasons but found we were culling cows, which should have been in their prime, because their udders simply weren’t holding up.” “We also had some issues around the service we were (or weren’t) getting from our genetics company so this, combined with the concerns we had around udders, saw us initially dabble and then move to overseas genetics. Reg & Hayley Davey, Waikato

“We’ve got 12 year old cows that still get in calf easily and milk well. They paid for themselves years ago.” Stefan & Holly Roulston, Tapanui, West Otago
“Genetics are important – you want the best the world has to offer but service is equally important. We’re very pleased with the service and support we’re getting from World Wide Sires. “If you’re getting good service when you want it and they work around you it’s worth a lot. We’ve got a great relationship with Irene (Saul) and the team behind her and are getting the cows we want. That’s what it’s all about. “The proof is in the pudding. If the animal produces and lasts it doesn’t matter about BW.” Tim and Mandy Smalley, Southland

“We shifted back to WWS because we just weren’t getting what we wanted in our heifers.” Darren & Jennifer Hislop, Little Wanganui, West Coast
“Over the last four or five years, I realised we weren’t making any headway; the genetics we were using might have been high in the evaluation ranks but where it counted, on the farm, they weren’t delivering – they were leaving the constitution out of the cows.” “We wanted to improve the overall strength and constitution of our cows and increase focus on fat as the payment incentives had changed and we needed to change our emphasis from protein, to fat.” “So we changed to World Wide Sires in the spring of 2018, and will see the first heifers in the shed this spring (2021).” Graeme and Trish Rennie, Southland

HOW MUCH? WHICH ONES? GENETIC BASE CHANGE APRIL 2020 KEY POINTS 1
The daughters of the bull have not changed, it’s the point of reference that has changed.
2
The Holstein Friesian breed improved for all three fertility estimates.
3
The rate of genetic improvement in Holsteins and Jerseys was more than 1.5 times faster between 2010 and 2015 than it was in the five years previous.
4
Holstein PTAs for Sire Calving Ease (SCE) are now 2.2% to represent the phenotypic base. Most sires range from 1% to 4% assisted births for every 100 calves born from maiden heifers.
5
Sires appear to transmit smaller, narrower daughters with poorer udders, which isn’t the case. Instead, the U.S. cow has gotten bigger, wider and has improved through the udder.

These estimates are traditional genetic predictions prior to modification with genomic data. Positive PTA will be lowered by the amount indicated to satisfy the new base. Conversely, a negative value means the PTA will be raised by the amount in the table. Estimates can change as additional records are added and trait variation is included. The red color indicates there was a loss for that trait between 2010 and 2015.
DECEMBER 2019 (PRE BASE CHANGE)
DECEMBER 2020 (POST BASE CHANGE)
“ EXTREME” RUMP ANGLE IS NOT AS SIGNIFICANT AS WE IMAGINE… The difference between -3.0 and +3.0 in rump angle on a linear scale is only 3.5 centimeters (about the length of a paper clip). In fact, the average daughter of a bull with a -3.0 rump angle will have a slope of 1.3 centimeters from hips to pins.

“My herd is made up of well-framed, strong cows which get in-calf easily and produce well.” Tony Luckin, Taranaki
“Relationships are everything when it comes to your sales representatives; they get to know you and your farming goals and earn your trust when what they recommend produces the goods”, Jennifer said, so when their representative left to work for another genetics company, the Hislops transferred their business. “That was two years ago – and this spring (2020) we came back to World Wide Sires. World Wide Sires had appointed Steve Booth as the breeding consultant for the West Coast, Marlborough and Nelson and we had wanted a better choice of A2/A2 sires.” Aside from those two years with another genetics company, the Hislop herd represents 20 years of World Wide Sires Jersey genetics. Jennifer and Darren Hislop, Little Wanganui, West Coast

Ask your WWS Breeding Consultant about these industry leading beef sires for your strategic use in your dairy herds.
“The World Wide Sires’ beef bulls are fantastic – we use Charolais, Speckle Park and Hereford. They’re well priced, well under half the price of similar breeds from New Zealand genetic companies. We get outstanding calves! They’re the easiest calves we have ever reared. The size and strength of the calves is evident in the fact that we wean on average 20 days earlier than anything else we’ve ever reared. They are easy calving. And they’re big strong calves which drink well and grow. We can’t say enough about them really!” Nathan and Lois Smith, Whanganui

Predicted Transmitting Ability (PTA) Milk, Fat & Protein – Predicts the average production of the sire’s future daughters above or below the breed genetic base for Milk lbs, Fat lbs & Protein lbs per lactation.
Somatic Cell Count (SCS) – An indicator of the bull’s daughter’s resistance to mastitis. The lower the score the better. +3.0 is average. Longevity (Productive Life) – The number of months above or below the average of the breed genetic base that the daughters of a bull are expected to remain in the herd.
CHILTON 119822
Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) – Expresses the percentage of open daughters that become pregnant in a 21 day period, relative to the daughters of an average sire. The higher the score the better. 0% is average.
Sire Conception Rate (SCR) – An evaluation of male fertility and results are based on confirmed pregnancies. SCR is expressed as a percentage difference from an average of zero. Therefore a bull with a SCR of 2.0% is expected to produce a conception rate of 2% more than the herd average.

GForce™ GForce indicates sires with elite genetic evaluations based on a combination of traditional pedigree data and genomic data, but does not contain actual daughter data. This combination of data increases the reliability of a young sire’s genetic prediction prior to the availability of actual daughter data. ®
Showcase™ Sires earn the Showcase designation through outstanding breed-leading Type or show-winning pedigrees. Turn to this designation to produce your next show winner or improve the overall type in your herd.
FeedPRO FeedPRO optimizes the selection for increased production and moderate body size while maintaining body condition score and daughter fertility. This revolutionary index designates sires with the genetics to improve income over feed costs and maintain health and reproductive traits.
®
FertilityPRO The FertilityPRO designation identifies sires with semen that will likely improve pregnancy rates. This designation is assigned by examining industry service sire conception rate values, along with intensive in-house semen quality evaluations.
®
GrazingPRO World Wide Sires’ GrazingPRO sires are selected to improve the profitability of grass-based production systems by transmitting greater longevity, better mobility, moderate stature, improved component yields, and superior production – all while not compromising fitness traits such as Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) and Somatic Cell Score (SCS).
gender SELECTED™ Look for the gender SELECTED icon to identify sires with sex-sorted semen available. More heifers is not out of reach with our research-backed gender SELECTED sires. All gender SELECTED semen is processed using SexedULTRA technology.
