GROUNDED IN SCIENCE BACKED BY PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

MEET OUR TEAM OF GRAZING EXPERTS:

CRAIG ROBERTSON NEW ZEALAND “The size and nature of the US dairy population has enabled us to make genetic gains that have not been seen in grazing markets before. As US technology and research continues to lead the world, this rate of genetic improvement will continue to increase. The ability to select and breed sires based on quantified and scientifically backed Health & Wellness traits adds value to our customer’s herds. Sires that breed easily managed and efficient-sized cows, who convert grass into volumes of high component milk that don’t need high amounts of supplement to be profitable producers from grass and get in-calf within the mating season, is what we’re striving for and what GrazingPRO gives us.”

GENERAL

WIDE SIRES NEW ZEALAND. 5 YEARS EXPERIENCE

PAUL MEADE SOUTH AFRICA ”Our goal is to breed ‘Warrior Cows’: low intervention profitable producers. Local grazing herds require the shorter, wider kind of cow that holds condition. She must have a quality mammary system with superior udder health and excellent mobility to get to and from the pasture. The seasonally calved cow must be fertile; she must also be an efficient converter of grass to high-solids milk and do this year after year after year. It is in longevity (dependent on fertility) that dairy profitability depends. GrazingPRO helps to achieve that goal.”

SALESMAN, WORLD WIDE SIRES SOUTH AFRICA. 27 YEARS EXPERIENCE

CONOR MORLEY IRELAND ”The ability to survive a blockcalving low-input grass-based system requires many traits, but a key trait is fertility. High DPR WWS sires have continually demonstrated their ability to deliver high fertility in Irish grazing conditions. The ideal grazing cow for Ireland must survive in a 365-380-day calving block and maintain that each year for 5+ lactations and produce more kgs of milk solids than kgs of liveweight. Her milk solids production must be driven from high percents rather than high milk volume. She must survive low levels of concentrate inputs, ideally with low stature and high body condition and outperform other grass-based genetics on genetic traits like mastitis and lameness. We get all this with GrazingPRO.”

MANAGING DIRECTOR, WORLD WIDE SIRES IRELAND.

JEFF ZIEGLER USA ”GrazingPRO® does a nice job of representing the entire grazing segment. Yet, we all know there are, and likely always will be, variations of interest within the GrazingPRO® designees. Utilizing the Zoetis health traits, along with the CDCB traits, is the most ideal way to provide an answer to breeding for grazing systems. Mastitis resistance at 5% of the GrazingPRO® index may seem minor, yet so many other health and repro traits need to be incorporated, and most all have a positive correlation to mastitis, you will actually receive an indirect positive response to mastitis, even without directly selecting for it. Production is where some major differences in the use of the GrazingPRO® index will occur. Percent components as well as yield has varying acceptability levels, so there is no “one size fits all” answer. GrazingPRO® today does a nice job of finding the sweet spot of these various ideals. Any time we can show the genetic response by grouping bulls based on the index that makes them succeed, is the proof that the index is delivering as promised.”

A2A2

121837 OCD LEGACY BANGKOK-ET

The Quigley family moved to World Wide Sires in 2021 – a decision lead to some extent by their Breeding Consultant, Jessica Fabian.

Shane and Beata milk 440 A2 cows on the Maronan farm and work closely with the family farm run by Shane’s father and other manager, Blair, who’s farm also moved across to World Wide Sires in 2021.

“Our cows were getting quite tall and we wanted to use moderately sized bulls to keep stature moderate. Overall our breeding objective is to produce strong functional cows, which are predominantly black and white, A2, have good temperaments, produce well and last in the herd.

World Wide Sires was able to meet all those requirements; they’ve got a good range of A2 bulls.”

The first World Wide Sires calves are now on the ground and Shane says they’re “brilliant – little beasts to be fair! Getting good calves has never been a problem but in past years you would pick out the good ones. Now you stand back and look at them as a herd and it’s hard to pick a bad one!”

WMS GIVES US STRUCTURE AND A CLEAR DIRECTION!

“We have been using the World Wide Sires, WMS Mating Program for almost 18 years and wouldn’t be without it. We run our 200 cow dairy alongside our son Ben and his wife Lisa and all believe the WMS Mating Program gives us a structure with clear direction for our breeding policies. The program also helps us focus on traits for improvement and has resulted in breeding uniformity within the herd. By having our WMS Genetic Consultant by our sides throughout key management and breeding decisions has enabled us to remain proactive and focused on improvements.”

WHY WMS?

WE HAVEN’T LOOKED BACK SINCE!

“We have been using the World-Wide Sires, WMS Mating Program for over 15 years, having gone through an expansion we had a range of cows from New Zealand Friesians to extreme Holsteins. Through scoring the animals and matching bulls’ strengths to herd weaknesses we have been able to accelerate our genetic gain and key breeding goals. We have created a much more consistent, uniform herd with increased milk production, more functional animals to suit our system. As the industry continues to change, we re-evaluate our goals with our breeding consultant and having achieved our initial goals, we are able to build upon this to concentrate on further increasing our milk components, higher fertility bulls and offspring fertility and health traits such as Zoetis wellness data”.

Darryl and Ann Roberts, and their daughter Kay, milk 160 Friesian cows at their low input King Country farm. Darryl recalls they “changed to World Wide Sires across the entire herd five years ago. We wanted pure Friesian bulls – F16 – and hadn’t been getting that.

All our bull calves go to rearers at 100kg and they wanted pure Friesian. We also wanted genetics which would give us better udders. Prior to moving across to World Wide Sires it wasn’t uncommon for heifers to have uneven udders – up in front and down at the rear.”

The oldest World Wide Sires are now five years old, and have been milking for three years. Darryl and Ann are pleased with them. “They are more solid, have very quiet temperament and last longer in the herd. We’re really pleased with their fertility too – our empty rate was 6% last year.”

Scott and Kelly Jamieson took over the family farm fifteen years ago. Scott recalled the herd was “predominantly New Zealand genetics. It was a good herd but we were concerned about the narrow genetic pool and wanted outcross genetics, so we started using World Wide Sires.

Straight away – at the first calving – we noticed the vigour of the calves, they got up straight after being born, were well conditioned and strong. We were very happy and, year on year, we’ve continued to be impressed with World Wide Sires calves.

Our oldest World Wide Sires cows are now five years old and overall the cows coming through have great udders – that’s a stand-out. They are a better conformed type of cow with a really good cell count. We’ve noticed that they go from strength to strength in their second and third year in the herd – milk solid production has improved and across the board they have a stronger frame and are more robust. They’re not an overly big cow but we’re confident their strength will mean they last in the herd.”

Sam and her husband, Jamie, live on and manage the Eggleton family farm at Cannington inland from Timaru. The genetics of the 830 mainly Friesian herd was New Zealand based until the family decided to move 70% to World Wide Sires in 2021.

“When we moved to World Wide Sires, our rep (Jess) told us that we’d see a difference in the substance and quality of the calves, and took us to see the progeny of some of the bulls we’d be using. We were really impressed with the strength and consistency of the calves and it confirmed we’d made the right decision moving to the biggest dairy genetics business in the world.

Looking at our first-born World Wide Sires calves they certainly met our expectations – they’re born ready to go! Easy to train, strong fast drinkers and well framed.

They made my job relatively easy! We’ve got a great line of dairy replacements so I’m pretty happy!”

Collette Steiner and Leigh Garner contract milk for Matthew and Trudy Holmes on their 145 hectare dairy platform on the outskirts of Ashburton.

The couple are in their fifth season on the farm, Collette recalling that farm owners, Mathew and Trudy Holmes, moved to World Wide Sires in 2021.

“Our WWS Rep (Jess) takes a personal interest in the herd, is very knowledgeable in relation to the best genetics for a desired outcome and is always available to talk to – which is so important at peak times of the year.

If I ever have queries, I know I can ring her and get the advice I need. And knowing she has a personal interest and passion for the herd means I will often send her a photo of, say, the calves knowing that she will appreciate it and respond.

It’s been an easy year in the calf shed and on the farm with the WWS progeny and we’re looking forward to watching them grow and, eventually, come into the herd.”

GrazingPRO®

GROUNDED IN SCIENCE BACKED BY PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

MEET OUR JERSEY GRAZING EXPERT:

HERBY LUTZ USA ”I have had the opportunity to have my boots on the ground with grazing herds in many countries around the world for the past 25 years like New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Colombia, and Costa Rica and in the US. These herds, no matter of location, are looking for high components, fertility, smaller stature and healthy cows; all of which are incorporated into the GrazingPRO® formula. As we bring Jersey bulls into the GrazingPRO® program we are looking for bulls that have plus component percents and pounds, with high DPR, CCR, and HCR. We want bulls that are below average stature but have strength and have less dairy form. We also feel that udder depth and cleft, along with both CDCB Mastitis and Z_Mastitis, is very important to create trouble free cows. We utilize the calf traits Z_Calf Livability, Z_Calf Respiratory Disease, and Z_Calf Scours. This allows for the creation of animals that perform well in production and health and make calves that are easier to develop into the next profitable generation.”

Nick and Lucy Gilbert are the fifth generation of the Gilbert family to breed and milk pedigree Jerseys at the family’s 180 hectare farm at Winchmore in mid Canterbury.

“Dad has always been a believer in North American/World Wide Sires’ genetics especially when it comes to Jerseys because they promote the dairy characteristics most commercial farmers want in their herds – strong conformation which ensures they last in the herd, well supported udders capable of producing volume and fantastic temperaments.

Their udders don’t blow out; it’s not uncommon to have 10 year old cows in the herd which still get in calf every spring and produce well. Our oldest cow currently is 16 years old.

If you put World Wide Sires’ Jersey calves alongside their New Zealand contemporaries the difference would be stark – stronger, more robust with great colour and temperament.”

Nick Gilbert said the quality of their herd generates demand for the “the sale of young stock. Our bull calves are always in demand too, from farmers who want quality, well-tempered bulls as tail-end for their heifers.”

The customer acknowledges that no title in any dewar or storage/delivery apparatus supplied by WWS will pass to the customer, and that the customer will return the dewar or storage/delivery apparatus to WWS at its expense.

3.4 If a customer provides its own dewar or storage/delivery apparatus for use by WWS, then the dewar or storage/delivery apparatus remains at the sole risk of the customer. The customer indemnifies WWS for any damage to any item that belongs to WWS or any third party that is caused by a dewar or storage/delivery apparatus that belongs to a customer.

3.5 WWS shall not be liable in any way whatsoever for any accident or injury occurring as a result of incorrect or improper handling of a dewar while it is in the customer’s possession.

3.6 It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that dewars remain filled with liquid nitrogen at all times while in the customer’s possession. WWS will not accept any liability for any dry dewars that occur as a result of the customer failing to request further liquid nitrogen in a timely manner.

3.7 All goods supplied by WWS are deemed to be accepted by the customer unless the customer provides notice of an issue to WWS within 10 working days of the goods being delivered.

4. Limitation of WWS’s Liability

4.1 WWS warrants that it has good title to the products sold.

4.2 Although customers have gained a high degree of success in the use of these products, and every effort is made to ensure the supply of high quality products, WWS , its agents and contractors give no warranty whatsoever as to the description, quality or productiveness or the results which may be obtained in the use of WWS products. Any such warranty given by any of its agents or employees is hereby excluded on the basis that such a warranty would have been given without the authority of WWS.

4.3 WWS’s liability for any claim relating to any act or omission of WWS or its agents, employees or contractors, whether in negligence or contract or otherwise, shall not exceed the purchase price of the product sold or services provided. WWS has the right at its discretion to replace product. In no event shall WWS be liable for the customer’s incidental or consequential damages, including economic loss.

4.4 The customer acknowledges that WWS will not at any time be responsible for any semen or technician services for any animal inseminations undertaken by the customer personally or by any other third party. The customer acknowledges that the success of any insemination or technician services cannot be guaranteed.

4.5 To the extent that the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, the Fair Trading Act 1986, and other statutes may impose warranties, conditions or obligations on WWS , all such imposed warranties, conditions or obligations to the extent permitted by law are excluded and any warranty, condition or obligation imposed or implied under common law, equity or otherwise are excluded.

4.6 Where the customer acquires goods and/or services from WWS for the purposes of a business:

(a) the parties acknowledge and agree that:

(i) the customer is acquiring he goods and/or services covered by these terms for the purposes of a business in terms of sections 2 and 43(2) of the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993; and

(ii) the goods and/or services are both supplied and acquired in trade from the purposes of the Fair Trading Act 1986 and the parties agree to contract out of sections 9 (Misleading and deceptive conduct generally), 12A (Unsubstantiated representations), and 13 (False or misleading representations); and

(b) the customer agrees that all warranties, conditions, and other terms implied by the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or sections 9, 12A, and 13 of the Fair Trading Act 1986 are excluded from these Terms and Conditions to the fullest extent permitted by law and the parties further acknowledge and agree that it is fair and reasonable that the parties are bound by this clause.

4.7 Any claim or dispute arising under these terms will be determined by arbitration under the Arbitration Act 1996 if the parties are unable to resolve such dispute themselves within one (1) month of the dispute arising. However, nothing in this clause prevents either party from taking immediate steps to seek any equitable relief before the New Zealand Courts.

4.8 WWS will not be liable for any failure or delay in complying with any obligation imposed on it under these terms if the failure or delay arises directly or indirectly from a cause reasonably beyond its control.

Predicted Transmitting Ability (PTA) Milk, Fat & Protein – Predicts the average production of the sire’s future daughters above or below the breed genetic base for Milk lbs, Fat lbs & Protein lbs per lactation.

Somatic Cell Count (SCS) – Measures a bull’s milking daughter’s susceptibility to mastitis. The USA herd average is set to 3.00 (as zero) with lower proof values indicating lower somatic cell count.

Longevity (Productive Life) – A score used to identify the productive months of life a cow will have compared to herd mates. A PL of 1.0 equates to one additional month of production in the herd. PL gives the greatest weight to the first 305 days (10 months) of lactation, as cows are most profitable and productive in early lactation.

Calving Ease (SCE) – This is the estimate of the Percentage of Difficult Births in Heifers (DBH) when they calve the first time. The average for the Holstein breed is 2.2%

Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) – Measures the cow’s ability to begin cycling, show estrus, conceive and maintain pregnancy and is highly correlated with PL. A DPR of 1.0 equates to a 1% increase in pregnancy rate during a given 21 day estrus cycle. Every 1.0 PTA increase in DPR indicates 4 fewer days open.

Sire Conception Rate (SCR) – This is not a genetic trait, but measures the fertility of the bull. An SCR of 1.0 indicates a 1% increase in conception rate when compared to average.

Gestation Length (GL) – Expressed as the number of days greater than or less than the average gestation length for the breed. The typical range is +/-5 days. In general, gestation length has decreased over time for breeds that have selected for lower calving ease (i.e. Holstein), as calving ease and gestation length are highly correlated. Gestation Length is available for all dairy breeds. US is 5 days shorter than NZ average (277 US, 282 days NZ).

Milking Speed – Canadian Breeding Value that expresses the expected milking speed for a bull’s daughters when compared to the average milking speed for the population. 100 is standardized to the average of the population and breed, with numbers above 100 indicating faster than average milking speeds.

Feed Saved – Indicates the expected reduction of consumed feed per lactation based on evaluations for residual feed intake and body weight composite. Measured in pounds of dry matter intake.

Wellness (WT$): Places economic weights on wellness traits, directly estimating potential profit contribution of these traits for an individual animal. This multi-trait selection index focuses solely on wellness traits with unique formulas used for Holsteins and Jerseys for Mastitis, Lameness, Metritis, Retained Placenta, Displaced Abomasum, Ketosis and Cow Respiratory.

Body Conditon Score – Canadian Breeding Value that expresses the expected body condition score for a bull’s daughters when compared to the average body condition for the population. 100 is standardized to the average of the population and breed, with numbers above 100 indicating higher than average body condition.

PTAT – PTA Type or conformation improvement expected from a bull’s daughters compared to contemporaries.

UDC – Udder Composite Index (Holstein) = Udder Depth 0.20, Fore Udder 0.16, Rear Udder Height 0.23, Rear Udder Width 0.19, Udder Cleft 0.08, Front Teat Placement 0.04, Rear Teat Placement 0.05, Teat Length 0.05, Stature -0.20.

GForce™ GForce indicates sires with elite genetic evaluations based on a combination of traditional pedigree data and genomic data, but does not contain actual daughter data. This combination of data increases the reliability of a young sire’s genetic prediction prior to the availability of actual daughter data.

GForce+™ The GForce+ lineup includes genomic young sires selected based on rigid semen quality standards and their high-ranking Sire Conception Rate (SCR) from progeny test semen usage. GForce+ sires must have outstanding genetic merit, a highly reliable sire stack and actual calving ease observations.

FeedPRO® FeedPRO optimizes the selection for increased production and moderate body size while maintaining body condition score and daughter fertility. This revolutionary index designates sires with the genetics to improve income over feed costs and maintain health and reproductive traits.

GrazingPRO® World Wide Sires’ GrazingPRO sires are selected to improve the profitability of grass-based production systems by transmitting greater longevity, better mobility, moderate stature, improved component yields, and superior production all while not compromising fitness traits such as Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) and Somatic Cell Score (SCS).

CROSS

BEEF

RobotPRO® World Wide Sires has identified sires that transmit the desired traits for robotic milking systems. These sires were selected by focusing on component and milk yield, milk quality, udder health as well as functional udder traits. Use these sires to create the next generation of profitable cows for your specific milking system.

Showcase™ Sires earn the Showcase designation through outstanding breed-leading Type or show-winning pedigrees. Turn to this designation to produce your next show winner or improve the overall type in your herd.

FertilityPRO® The FertilityPRO designation identifies sires with semen that will likely improve pregnancy rates. This designation is assigned by examining industry service sire conception rate values, along with intensive in-house semen quality evaluations.

gender SELECTED™ Look for the gender SELECTED icon to identify sires with sex-sorted semen available. More heifers is not out of reach with our research-backed gender SELECTED sires. All gender SELECTED semen is processed using SexedULTRA technology.

Elite Sexed Fertility™ The Elite Sexed Fertility icon designates sires that can help you achieve the highest sex-sorted semen conception rates, enhancing your return on investment! This innovative designation distinguishes our highest performing sires for sex-sorted semen in both 2M and 4M products.

Mastitis ResistantPRO™ Sires which excel in multiple indicators of mastitis resistance are more likely to deliver genetic improvement. MastitisResistantPRO uses a combination of CDCB Mastitis Resistance, CDCB Somatic Cell Score (SCS) and Zoetis Mastitis Resistance.

A2/A2 Sires test A2/A2 for Beta Casein.
