DESIGNATIONS DEFINED
RobotPRO® World Wide Sires has identified sires that transmit the desired traits for robotic milking systems. These sires were selected by focusing on component and milk yield, milk quality, udder health as well as functional udder traits. Use these sires to create the next generation of profitable cows for your specific milking system.
GForce™ GForce indicates sires with elite genetic evaluations based on a combination of traditional pedigree data and genomic data, but does not contain actual daughter data. This combination of data increases the reliability of a young sire’s genetic prediction prior to the availability of actual daughter data.
FertilityPRO® The FertilityPRO designation identifies sires with semen that will likely improve pregnancy rates. This designation is assigned by examining industry service sire conception rate values, along with intensive in-house semen quality evaluations.
GForce+™ The GForce+ lineup includes genomic young sires selected based on rigid semen quality standards and their high-ranking Sire Conception Rate (SCR) from progeny test semen usage. GForce+ sires must have outstanding genetic merit, a highly reliable sire stack and actual calving ease observations.
gender SELECTED™ Look for the gender SELECTED icon to identify sires with sex-sorted semen available. More heifers is not out of reach with our research-backed gender SELECTED sires. All gender SELECTED semen is processed using SexedULTRA technology.
ComponentMAXX For dairy farmers wanting to focus on improving Fat and Protein test. Bulls identified are more than +0.05% for both Fat & Protein test.
Elite Sexed Fertility™ The Elite Sexed Fertility icon designates sires that can help you achieve the highest sex-sorted semen conception rates, enhancing your return on investment! This innovative designation distinguishes our highest performing sires for sex-sorted semen in both 2M and 4M products.
Calving Ease Sires that can be used with confidence for easier calvings, the lower the calving ease score the easier the expected calvings.
A2/A2
FeedPRO® FeedPRO optimizes the selection for increased production and moderate body size while maintaining body condition score and daughter fertility. This revolutionary index designates sires with the genetics to improve income over feed costs and maintain health and reproductive traits.
A2/A2 Sires test A2/A2 for Beta Casein. ™gender SELECTED, gender SELECTED 4M, Elite Sexed Fertility and GForce are trademarks of Select Sires Inc. SexedULTRA and SexedULTRA 4M are trademarks of Inguran LLC. All gender SELECTED semen is processed using SexedULTRA technology. Limitations and Conditions of Sale: gender SELECTED semen shall be used only for the single insemination of one female bovine during natural ovulation with the intent to produce a single offspring unless specifically approved on an individual customer basis by Sexing Technologies in writing. As a condition of purchasing gender SELECTED semen, the purchaser agrees that gender SELECTED semen will not be reverse sorted or re-sorted unless specifically permitted, in advance, on a case-by-case basis by Select Sires in writing. Select Sires intends to monitor the use of the gender SELECTED semen and vigorously enforce these restrictions on use. Please see http://www.selectsires.com/ designations/genderselected.html for additional details.
Showcase™ Sires earn the Showcase designation through outstanding breed-leading Type or show-winning pedigrees. Turn to this designation to produce your next show winner or improve the overall type in your herd.

U.S. GENETIC EVALUATIONS PRODUCTIVE LIFE – Predicts the number of months above or below breed average that a bull’s daughters will be in production in the herd. Credits for months of productive life are based upon standard lactation curves, with highest credits at the peak of lactation and diminishing credits across the lactation. Credit is now given for days beyond 305 days in a lactation. The standard is set such that a second lactation cow with 305 days in milk gets 10 months credit. First lactation gets less credit than later lactations. The heritability of PL is 8.5%.
The FSAV PTA ranges from 594 to -453 with a standard deviation of 109 pounds per lactation. It is assumed that about 68 percent of sires will have a FSAV between -109 and +109 while 95 percent of sires will range from -218 to +218. Feed costs can make up over half of the total costs on a dairy farm1. Selecting for more feed-efficient cows can reduce these costs and improve profitability. FSAV is an excellent first attempt at a feed efficiency evaluation which will likely improve going forward with additional data. FEED EFFICIENCY INDEX (FEI): (Dollar value of milk produced) - (Feed costs for extra milk) - (Extra maintenance costs dependant on estimated cow size
LIVABILITY – is a prediction of a cow’s ability to remain alive while in the milking herd. It is economically important that cows remain alive, productive and not requiring another cow to replace her. Livability is expressed as a probability value of a lactation not ending in death or on-farm euthanasia. For example, in an average herd where 80% of the cows do not die on the farm, a bull with a LIV of +3.0, means that you would expect 83% of his daughters to remain alive until it is time for them to leave the farm, contrasted with a bull with a LIV of -3.0, for which you would expect 77% of his daughters to leave the farm alive.
What is PTA? Predicted Transmitting Ability is the predicted difference of a parent animal’s offspring from average, due to the genes transmitted from that parent. Each PTA is given in the units used to measure the trait. The PTA for milk, fat and protein is reported in pounds; the PTA for productive life is reported in months. The reliability figure is a reflection of the number of daughters that have contributed to the bull’s proof and their distribution across herds. UDC – the weightings on the individual traits comprising the Udder Composite Index are derived from continued research by the Holstein Association USA on herd life.
SOMATIC CELL SCORE – measures the milking daughter’s susceptibility to mastitis. Lower proof values indicating greater resistance to mastitis incidence. DAUGHTER PREGNANCY RATE – estimates cow fertility and is highly correlated with PL. A DPR of 1.0 equates to a 1% increase in pregnancy rate during a given 21-day oestrus cycle. Each increase of 1% in PTA DPR equals a decrease of 4 days in PTA days open; e.g. daughters of a bull with +4.0 DPR will get in calf on average 16 days quicker than a bull with a DPR of 0.
FLC – Selecting animals that transmit superior mobility, steeper foot angle, wider rear leg stance with little or no hock-in will result in animals capable of longer productive life. Legs side view was added to the formula in April 2020. TPI is the US Holstein Association’s multi trait index that ranks bulls on overall performance. TPI places significantly more emphasis on type traits than the Net Merit formula, comparable averages for Fat and Protein production and slightly lower averages for health traits. Weighting of major categories: 46% Production, 28% Health & Fertility, 26% Conformation.)
COW CONCEPTION RATE – Lactating cow’s ability to conceive defined as a percentage of inseminated cows that become pregnant at each service; a CCR of 1 implies that daughters of this bull are 1% more likely to conceive when inseminated than daughters of a bull with an evaluation of 0.
JPI is the American Jersey Cattle Associations method of ranking bulls on overall performance. The weightings are as follows Protein 27%, Fat 19%, Milk Density 3%, Udder 9.2%, Body 10%, Feet & Legs 0.2%, DPR 9%, CCR 3.5%, HCR 2%, SCS 4.5%, PL 5%, Livability 3%, Health Traits 4.6% (Mastitis, Milk Fever or Hypocalcemia, Displaced Abomasum, Ketosis, Metritis and Retained Placenta).
HEIFER CONCEPTION RATE – Maiden heifer’s ability to conceive defined as a percentage of inseminated heifers that become pregnant at each service; an HCR of 1 implies that daughters of this bull are 1% more likely to conceive when inseminated as a heifer than daughters of a bull with an evaluation of 0. EARLY FIRST CALVING (EFC) – Is defined in days, and it is simply age at first calving with the sign reversed (+ vs. -). Selection toward positive values has been well-accepted for evaluation traits, and the trait was reversed so that selection would be toward what is normally considered the more desirable direction. If a bull transmits the genetics expected to reduce first calving by 2 days, his PTA for Early First Calving would be +2.0 days.
NET MERIT is a lifetime profitability index taking into account a variety of Production, Health & Fitness and Conformation traits. The index calculation is revised regularly to reflect progress in identifying and evaluating traits that affect a farm’s bottom line. Including high ranking Net Merit sires in your breeding program will enhance genetic progress and improve profitability. Selecting for Net Merit leads to long-lasting, fertile and healthy cows with correct udders and feet & legs that produce milk efficiently.
FERTILITY INDEX (FI) – The Fertility Index combines several reproductive components into one overall index: ability to conceive as a maiden heifer, ability to conceive as a lactating cow, and a cow’s overall ability to start cycling again, show heat, conceive, and maintain a pregnancy. FI = 70% DPR + 10% CCR + 10% HCR + 10% EFC.
U.S. PROTEIN RECORDS Most U.S. farmers are paid for true protein rather than crude protein. To be consistent with milk purchasers, the U.S. milk-recording system switched from measuring crude protein in milk to true protein in 2000. Only the USA, Australia, France and Hungary measure true protein, all other Interbull countries still measure crude protein. True protein is a measure of only the proteins in milk, whereas crude protein is a measure of all sources of nitrogen and includes non-protein nitrogen, such as urea, which has no food value to humans. This non-protein nitrogen is a waste product when making cheese and other manufactured products. The percentage of milk that is true protein is lower than the percentage that is crude protein by an approximate difference of 0.19%.
SIRE CALVING EASE – this is the estimate of the Percentage of Difficult Births in Heifers when they calve the first time. Each standard deviation in improvement equates to a 1% decrease in difficulty. The average for AI bulls with progeny is 7.9%. DAUGHTER CALVING EASE – measures the ability of a cow to calve easily. Each standard deviation in improvement equates to a 1% decrease in difficulty. Low Daughter Calving Ease is highly correlated with a long Productive Life. DWP$ The use of Dairy Wellness Profit Index would be expected to offer similar selection emphasis to that achieved by Net Merit (NM$) on traditional traits, but applies additional selection emphasis on Zoetis cow (mastitis, lameness, metritis, retained placenta, displaced abomasum, ketosis, cow respiratory, and milk fever (Jersey only) in addition to adding the economic value for the polled gene and fertility traits (cow abortion, cystic ovary, and twinning) and calf wellness traits (calf respiratory disease, calf scours and calf livability) for more informed rankings to help increase potential lifetime profitability. By including more characteristics affecting profitability, DWP$ describes more genetic variation in profitability than other indexes.

FEED SAVED The predicted transmitting ability (PTA) represents the expected pounds of feed saved per lactation based on Body Weight Composite (BWC) and Residual Feed Intake (RFI) evaluations. Larger, positive values are more favourable. Daughters of a sire with a FSAV of +200 are expected to consume on average 200 pounds less feed per lactation than expected based on their levels of milk, fat and production. Daughters of a sire with a FSAV of -300 pounds are expected to consume an average of 300 pounds of feed per lactation more than expected.

GFI (GENOMIC FUTURE INBREEDING) GFI is the future inbreeding coefficient of progeny using the expected homozygous loci from the actual genotypes as a result from genomic technology and not by pedigree expectations. Base population is all genotyped proven sires born in the last 10 years for Holsteins and for other breeds is all genotyped animals born in the last 10 years. The preferred lower GFI numbers mean that when the animal is mated to the base population, future progeny will have lower inbreeding.

GROWING HEIFERS TO BE YOUR BEST COWS WHY THE SIZE AND WEIGHT OF THE HEIFERS IN YOUR HERD IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THEIR AGE The size and maturity of a heifer at first calving has an impact on her production and longevity as a cow, and heifer production may have a bigger impact on your herd average than you think.
The cost of replacements to a dairy is significant, coming in just behind feed and labor. Replacement costs may be lowered by an earlier age at freshening, but if these younger heifers are not of adequate size when they freshen there will be lost income from reduced production and higher culling rates.
FOCUSING ON HEIFER
GROWTH
ALLOWS SELECTION OF THE OPTIMUM AGE AND SIZE AT FIRST CALVING TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR REPLACEMENT PROGRAM. To account for cow size variation between herds, goals for heifer size are based on percent comparison to mature cows in the herd. THE IMPACT OF HEIFER GROWTH ON FIRST LACTATION PRODUCTION IN TURN IMPACTS OVERALL HERD PRODUCTION.
3.25 - 3.50
Of course, weights must be achieved through body frame growth, not fat. Over conditioned heifers have more calving problems, more disease post calving, and poorer conception.
Size and age are related, and it can be difficult to distinguish the effect of each in an individual herd where weight data is not available. From controlled research studies and experience with herds where weight is measured, the size and weight of the heifer is more important than age. In other words, heifers that calve at 650 kg in a Holstein herd where mature weight is about 700 kg produce the same in first lactation whether they are 22 months or 24 months of age. But, in herds with heifers that have not reached mature weight by 22 months, there is a clear trend for higher milk production with greater age at first calving. Managing for heifer size at calving requires knowing the average daily gain after heifers are pregnant, and backcalculating to determine the size they need to be at conception to achieve adequate size during the 280 days of pregnancy. Taking advantage of heifer growth potential during milk feeding and post-weaning is key to reaching growth targets at breeding and calving. Heifers should at least double birth weight by weaning time, 220% of birth weight is achievable and even better. Weaning should be managed to maintain positive growth during and after the transition to solid feed. Disease early in life has an impact on both growth and later productivity, especially calf pneumonia. Controlling disease must be a part of the strategy to maximize first lactation production potential.
Usually, first lactation cows make up 30-40% of a milking herd so their milk production significantly influences herd average daily milk production. A good way to assess the performance of your first lactation animals is to compare average peak milk for first lactation and second lactation cows to average peak milk for 3rd and greater lactation. First lactations should be 7075% and second lactations should be 92-95% of third and greater lactations. To push your herd performance, have heifers that are ready to perform at their maximum potential from their first calving onwards.

FEED EFFICIENCY
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO ME?
by Rebekah Mast, WWS
FEED EFFICIENCY IN DAIRY CATTLE IS OF INTEREST TO DAIRY PRODUCERS AND ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCATES AROUND THE WORLD BECAUSE… FEED EFFICIENT COWS GENERATE HIGHER INCOME OVER FEED COSTS AND HAVE A SMALLER CARBON FOOTPRINT THAN COWS THAT ARE LESS EFFICIENT.
Dairy producers around the world have selected for increased efficiency for decades by focusing on increased milk production per cow and, more recently, decreased body size. This trend for higher volumes of milk produced by fewer cows is seen around the world, as producers continually strive for improved efficiency through better genetics and management practices.

RFI AND FEED SAVED FSAV
Calculating Residual Feed Intake (RFI) requires daily measurements of feed intake, body weight and milk production among animal cohorts. As of November, 2020 there are 6,231 Holstein cows with feed intake data and genotypes in the database contributing to the genomic RFI evaluation. Unlike the Feed Efficiency (FE) evaluation, which is expressed as the economic advantage of feed efficiency, Feed Saved FSAV incorporates genomic evaluations for Residual Feed Intake RFI rather than related values for milk, fat and protein production, and will be expressed in pounds of dry matter saved per lactation.
PTA FE (USD) = (-0.0248 X PTA MILK) + (1.16 X PTA FAT) + (2.18 X PTA PROTEIN) – (12.4 X BWC*) PTA FSAV (POUNDS OF DRY MATTER) = (-138 X BWC*) + (-1 X PTA RFI) *BWC = (0.23 X STATURE) + (0.72 X STRENGTH) + (0.08 X BODY DEPTH) + (0.17 X RUMP WIDTH) – (0.47 X DAIRY FORM) LIFETIME VALUE OF FEED SAVED = $0.12/POUND DM X 2.6 LACTATIONS = $0.31/POUND OF FEED SAVED

BOTTOM LINE Residual Feed Intake and Feed Saved are valuable evaluations that provide greater insight into improving feed efficiency in dairy cattle.
HOWEVER, FEED EFFICIENCY ALONE IS NOT THE GOAL OF MOST PRODUCERS, BUT RATHER INCREASING INCOME OVER FEED COSTS.
For this reason, these traits should be used within a total merit index that accurately accounts for all the traits associated with profitability.

FIVE FACTORS ALL GREAT DAIRIES HAVE IN COMMON ALL DAIRIES HAVE THE SAME GOAL: TO PRODUCE MILK TO SELL TO THE MARKET AND TO MAKE MONEY.
“
by Kevin Bousquet, GDS
”
AIRIES NEVER HAVE COW PROBLEMS. D DAIRIES ONLY HAVE PEOPLE PROBLEMS.
When a problem arises, the best managers point the finger back at themselves and ask: “What am I doing wrong?” The best managers have the luxury of spending their productive hours concentrating on projects to make the dairy better and more profitable.
1 2 3 4 5
CONSULTANTS VISIT THE DAIRY REGULARLY. A consultant acts as an objective set of eyes. Consultants rarely tell a manager anything they don’t already know. What a consultant does is point out the abnormal that has become normal on the dairy and come up with a workable solution or path to a solution. Successful dairies have a trusted group of advisors for different areas of the dairy: nutrition, herd health, reproduction, etc., from whom they seek out help and ideas. Pick consultants you trust to offer relevant advice and stick with them. Having a consultant that is capable of teaching and training dairy staff should be the target.
WRITTEN PROTOCOLS ARE PROVIDED AND FOLLOWED. Great dairies have written protocols for every aspect of the dairy; from milking procedure to tagging calves to euthanizing a down cow. Protocols are created by management and consultants in the specific area the protocol pertains to. Many of the protocols are posted for easy viewing and include pictures or diagrams for reference. Protocols protect the cows from the people. All employees should have free access to all protocols that pertain to their area. Protocols should be a part of the training material an employee is required to understand and commit to.
TRAINING PROGRAMS ARE IMPLEMENTED. Protocols are useless pieces of paper unless the staff is trained to work within the protocol. Great dairies realize that untrained employees are a liability to the dairy. Training people turns them into assets, and at minimum takes the excuses away from the employee. Not having a comprehensive training program for the employees that touch the cows daily is one of the biggest mistakes seen on dairies. The best investment a dairy can make is in training the people they are exposing to their herd.
QUALITY NUTRITION IS PARAMOUNT. We have genetically altered the cow to be capable of producing 60 plus liters of milk at peak production, and to stay healthy and get bred back quickly while she’s doing it. Her performance is directly tied to nutrition. Great dairies know how important nutrition is at every stage of life, age and lactation. Emphasis is put on pasture management, quality of feed, feed management, and bunk management. Feeders are trained to ensure that every cow has a consistent mouthful of quality feed every time she goes to the pasture or bunk. By addressing nutrition correctly, successful dairies have very few health issues and most have eliminated antibiotic use in the milking herd.
COW COMFORT IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE. By far the greatest common denominator for successful dairies is their focus on basic animal husbandry principles; everything possible is done to provide cows with a clean, comfortable, mud free environment. Water troughs are cleaned at least once per week, feed bunks and feed alleys are kept clean, yards and walkways are well maintained and easy on the cows’ feet. The cows are always clean. Calving camps are kept clean and first lactation cows are run separately wherever possible until the end of their first lactation. A common motto for these dairy managers is; “Clean, comfortable, well fed cows are happy, healthy cows that give a lot of milk and get bred back.”
THE GREATEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SUCCESSFUL DAIRY AND THE AVERAGE DAIRY IS NOT FANCY BUILDINGS, EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT OR FANCY COWS. THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT SUCCESSFUL DAIRIES ARE PROVIDING THE ENVIRONMENT AND MANAGEMENT TO GET THE MAXIMUM GENETIC EXPRESSION OUT OF THE COWS THEY ARE MILKING.
