It’s hard to imagine what southwest Florida was like centuries ago when Calusa Indians lived here. The Calusa loved the water – they lived from it, and so they settled up and down the coastal region, favoring places where inland waters flowed into the Gulf. It’s no different today. People have always loved the water and the most sought-after locations are still where inland waters flow into the Gulf. A prime example is Estero Bay in Bonita Springs, once home to many Calusa. (Their mark still shows in an entire island that they built from shell called Mound Key, believed to be their ceremonial center, now a state park and archeological site.) Surrounding the aquatic preserve of Estero Bay (and its many feeder tributaries and waterways that empty into the Gulf ) are some of the most magnificent homes in southwest Florida, one of which we feature in this issue. You’ll enjoy this penthouse at Palermo in The Colony, a two-story home with breathtaking sweeping views of Estero Bay and the Gulf, on page 8.
