ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to continue our advocacy and fight for a cure. In September we celebrated the Beyond October Campaign an educational and health initiative to eradicate cancer around the world and bring healing into the lives of women.

Inside this issue we are featuring two of our award recipients Barbara Burns and Venus Cummings, women who have incredible strength and courage, women that inspire!

On September 9th we celebrated the 1st Annual PinkTealies Awards Symposium where we honored 12 survivors at an all sold out event; it was amazing! There was so much support from the community, our sponsors were wonderful, and the auction was fantastic. Thank you in advance for enjoying this special edition of Silke Endress created with you in mind for intimate conversations with real women with real issues. The accompanying content is a courtesy of ara, and featured profiles. It has been projected that cancer will be the leading cause of death by 2011. The Beyond October Campaign next phase is Color America Healthy, encouraging women to eat more colorfully, to live more healthier. Healthy living reduces cancer risk, eat a minimum of 5 servings of vegetables and fruits each day. Brightly colored produce is packed with cancer-fighting nutrients - choose health. By the end of 2008 about 562,340 Americans are expected to die of cancer, more than 1,500 people a day. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the U.S. exceeded only by heart disease, and accounts for 1 of every 4 deaths. Let’s continue to advocate for cancer awareness, prevention, and regular mammograms 24/7, 365

PINKTEALIES AWARDS RECIPIENT NOMINATED BY: COMMISSIONER FERNANDEZ

VENUS

My name is Venus Cummings, I am 38 years old. I moved to Orlando Florida from Puerto Rico in 1989. I have two beautiful daughters and a handsome son whom are my pride and joy. On August 2007 I separated from my husband after 6 years of marriage. Those were some hard and difficult 6 years (my husband is 18 years older than I am). My husband has always tried to control my life. He never accepted my eldest son from my previous marriage, it was a constant battle, and I could not stand it any longer. My husband did not approve of my family or friends and little by little, he isolated me. I decided to start college in 2005. That decision became another challenge, my husband did not approve of my studies, obstacles after obstacles, insults after insults about the major I chose to study. My husband would go on and on about the “wrong choice” I supposedly had made.

On June 2007 I began working for McCoy Federal Credit Union as a bank teller. Working at the bank became yet another challenge, and more pressure from my husband he did not approve of my job. I continued attending college even though my husband refused for me to accomplish professional growth, my dreams, or any of my personal goals, which one of them was to complete my Bachelor on Criminal Justice. As all this was happening, I was planning to leave this relationship, which was putting me through unimaginable stress, nervous breakdowns and affecting the well-being of my children. One day, I grabbed my two daughters and left. I contacted my best friend, a cancer survivor too and asked her for shelter and she eventually rented a room/studio for my daughters and me, where we lived for two years. I continued studying while at the same time working to provide for my daughters, it was hard because my husband made my life unbearable, he knew everywhere I went, who I talked to, what I was wearing… everything. It’s terrifying! I tried many times filing an injunction against him through Seminole County since my divorce, and each time the injunction against my husband was denied, however, I did not give up, I filed an injunction against my husband through the Orange County Clerk of Courts. With the assistance of the Harbour House I was able to get the injunction granted since my husband had been previously arrested for aggression.

“After going through biopsies, sonograms and mammograms, my worst fears were confirmed; the test results came back and revealed stage 1 cancer”

Without me realizing it, all that stress was slowly consuming me, taking a direct hit on my body, physically, psychological, and emotionally I found myself distraught. One day I went out for lunch and realized my car was gone. My husband had my car towed, I went crazy; I did not know what to do or how I was going to get around, get home pick and drop off my daughters. I had to pick up my daughters from school, that afternoon. I called the police, the police contacted my husband, my husband told the police, that he had taken the car, that the car was under his name and that he could do anything he wanted.

On March 2008, while watching T.V. and self-examining my breast I noticed an unusual lump on my left breast. I knew right away that the lump was not normal, and I sought medical attention. I scheduled an appointment to see my primary care physician. I was alarmed and panicky; however, leaving matters in God hands I tried to stay positive and calm. While waiting for the test results to come back, I could not help but to be anxious and worried. After going through biopsies, sonograms and mammograms, my worst fears were confirmed; the test results came back and revealed stage-1 cancer. My whole world had come crushing down in front of my eyes and l was helpless to stop it. I was distraught, and could not help but question God, why me? Had I not been through enough? What had I done so bad to deserve this? I knew there was no one in our family with cancer, all the stress from putting up with my husband and the divorce must have cause or contributed to getting the disease. Once I put my self together, and came to my senses I realized that I needed to fight this disease. I had three children who are my life and needed me, which was plenty of reason to battle this disease. It took me three months to get the surgery. I was waiting for one of my sister to come from out of the country to help care for my children and me while I recovered from the surgery. To my surprise and after waiting three months my sister was not coming. By now, my cancer had worsened and was at Stage-2. I made the decision to remove both of my breasts to avoid future spreading. I went under surgery on June 2008, that same day I was supposed to get my reconstruction surgery, however, the surgeon found another tumor hidden below the identified tumor. Once out of surgery the surgeon explained the situation, and immediately I burst into tears. struggle to recover while at the same time care for my children, by myself.

The doctor told me that my cancer was aggressive, and suggested radiation, everyday, for 6 weeks, I took his advice. My skin burned and has a dark shadow appearance; I also have a brown dark spot, which I hope it will clear up slowly. The Oncologist prescribed for me to take Tamofixen for five years twice a day. The Oncologist ordered new test to make sure everything was running accordingly. He ordered another CT scan, a PET scan, it did not show anything with the appendix, now it was showing blood clots in my pelvis! As if I hadn’t enough. The oncologist ordered me to stop taking the medication. The Oncologist ordered me to begin an anticoagulant treatment for six months, as soon as possible since once again my life depended on the treatment. Again my life did an unexpected turn, just when I thought I could get my reconstructive surgery I had to cancel all my plans and can not do the reconstructive surgery until I finished the blood thinner treatment. I thought to myself that God must have a purpose for me if I was still alive and had survive through all this. My children are the reason I won’t give up, they are my inspiration. When all of this is over, I dream of being able to travel with my 3 kids on a Disney 7 day Cruise to the Caribbean. I know my kids would love and truly enjoy the Disney Cruise just the 4 of us together. I dream of being be able to have a new/use cost efficient car that I could call my own, and no one could take it away. I thank God for having great, supporting friends who assisted me through the disease process. VENUS CUMMINGS, AND THAT’S HER STORY

Debora Bradley, President/CEO of 100 Percent, Inc a women’s apparel boutique whose purpose is to celebrate and empower women with fashion tees, lingerie, and accessories. Created by owners Debora Bradley and Nichole Fisher, the name 100 Percent Inc. signifies that each of us is incorporated with 100% of what we need to accomplish that which we were created to do. In an effort to make a difference in the lives of women, by affirming their uniqueness and giving a boost to their self-esteem, we came up with our Affirmation Tee Shirt line. Most of our affirmations are single words because we believe that “ONE” word has the power to change your destiny, if you can really connect to what that word says about you. Your world and your life are created with the words you speak to yourself, as well as to others. Each tee comes with a decree card to carry as a constant reminder of who you are. While searching for the perfect tee shirt, the fabric became the inspiration for our lingerie. It’s sleek, accentuates every curve, and feels like your favorite tee fresh out of the dryer. A solution was right in our hands. The lingerie line was designed to satisfy the need for comfort and femininity. We have transformed the “old ugly tee- shirt” into sexy lingerie. The fabric is a special blend of polyester and cotton that gives the coolness of a tee shirt with the look of sensuality. The key element to our exclusive design is that it can be custom- made for each woman, given our different shapes and sizes. 100 Percent, Inc’s solution to the dilemma of what is more important, comfort or being sexy is revolutionary! As women we are multi-faceted in our daily lives and desire both sex appeal and comfort ability. We are uniquely made; sensual, romantic, lovable women. Sexy, Comfort or Style? Why would any woman choose just one when she can have it all!

CHANGING JOBS? WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR 401(K) PLAN Changing jobs may represent an exciting time in your career by providing new challenges and an opportunity to enhance your skills and abilities. On the other hand, if you're leaving a job due to a lay off, termination or move, it can be a stressful process. And the decision of what to do with your 401(k) plan can add to the stress. With the economic downturn, a startling 45 percent of individuals are cashing out their 401(k) plans when leaving their companies. It's important to understand all of the choices you have and the impact of the decision you make. * If your vested account balance is $5,000 or more, you can leave your money where it is, and taxes won't be due until you withdraw money from the plan. If your vested account balance is under $5,000, you may be forced by your employer to take a distribution. One option is to roll your 401(k) account into an Individual Retirement Account. If you request a direct rollover -meaning you have the money transferred directly into the IRA -you won't owe taxes until you withdraw money from the account. You can also receive the money first and then roll it to an IRA. This is called an indirect rollover. You will have 60 days to deposit the funds in an IRA. Because the money was not rolled directly to the IRA, 20 percent will automatically be withheld. You will need to make that up when you send the money to the IRA administrator.

CHANGING JOBS? WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR 401(K) PLAN If you are going to work for a new company and will have a 401(k) plan there, you can roll your former company's 401(k) money into your new employer's plan. As with a rollover to an IRA, if you request a direct rollover, you won't have to pay taxes until you withdraw money from the account. You can take a cash distribution for the full amount of your balance, but, of course, you'll pay income tax on the money you receive. In addition, if you are under age 59 1/2, you may be subject to a 10 percent federal income tax penalty. And because you are receiving the money, 20 percent of your balance will be automatically withheld. You can leave some of the money in the plan and take the rest in cash or roll it to an IRA or new plan. Again, remember that any money taken in cash and not rolled over directly will be subject to the 20 percent withholding.

To see how taxes and penalties may impact your personal situation, check out a distribution impact calculator.

So which option is best? There's no one right answer to this question. Leaving the assets in your former company's plan or rolling the funds to an IRA both enable the money to remain tax-deferred. And if you elect the IRA option, you can access your assets at any time, plus you'll likely have a wider array of investment choices. Rolling funds to an IRA can enable you to choose funding vehicles that offer downside protection for income purposes and guaranteed lifetime income. For instance, IRA assets may be invested in a variable annuity, which offers optional living benefits that, at an additional cost, provide a guarantee of lifetime retirement income with potential for income increases (but not decreases) based on market performance.

if you request a direct rollover, you won't have to pay taxes

While taking some or all of the money in cash may seem appealing, it can result in taxes and penalties. It can also have a long-term effect on your retirement savings.

If your job change occurs close to when you planned to retire, you may be concerned about maximizing future income. If this is within five years of retirement, you are entering the most critical time of your investment life, a time Prudential calls "The Retirement Red Zone," which encompasses the five year period before and after retirement. The decisions you make during this 10-year span may have a fundamental impact on how you spend the 20-plus years of life that follow.

SIMPLE TIPS FOR PROMOTING BREAST CANCER AWARENESS IN YOUR OWN LIFE

B

reast cancer is a prolific disease with an estimated 192,370 new cases diagnosed this year in women and 1,910 new cases diagnosed in men, according to the National Cancer Institute.

This year, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month celebrates 25 years of promoting awareness, education, and empowerment. Since its inception a quarter century ago, NBCAM has grown into a partnership of national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies at the forefront of promoting important breast cancer issues. In recognition of this 25th anniversary milestone, here are five simple ways to celebrate breast cancer awareness in your own life, courtesy of the NBCAM organization:

Know your risks The risk of developing breast cancer is not the same for all women. According to the National Cancer Institute age is the single most important risk factor for breast cancer. But research has also shown that personal and family history of breast cancer, alterations in certain genes, reproductive and menstrual history, body weight, level of physical activity and alcohol consumption are among the factors that affect a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. Talk to your doctor about your risk of developing breast cancer. Practice healthy habits While there are some breast cancer risk factors that women cannot avoid - such as age and genetics - there are also steps that women can take to help prevent breast cancer on their own. Women should know that exposure to tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption are risk factors for breast cancer, as well as other cancers. In addition, research suggests that women can decrease their risk of cancer simply by eating healthy and exercising regularly. Make small changes now to embrace a healthier, more active lifestyle tomorrow. You may want to start by adding a brisk lunch time walk to your day, adding more fruits and vegetables, and limiting fat and alcohol in your diet. Schedule your annual mammogram Evidence shows that early detection of breast cancer greatly improves a woman's chance for

Silke Endress, Lifestyle of the Lady CEO International Professional Women’s Magazine 23

successful treatment, and scheduling regular mammograms is the most effective way of catching cancer early. The American Cancer Society recommends that all women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year, and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. For more information about breast cancer and screenings and to locate a free or low-cost clinic, visit www.cdc.gov/cancer/breast or call (800) CDC-Info. Know that there is hope Thanks to early detection and improvements in treatment, more women are surviving breast cancer, remaining disease-free and living longer, healthier lives. Today, nearly 90 percent of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer will survive their disease at least five years, up from just 75 percent 35 years ago, according to the National Cancer Institute. Moreover, the death rate from breast cancer in women has decreased by 2.2 percent annually between 1990 and 2004, according to the American Cancer Society. Today, there is a flourishing community of 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, and there is a great deal to be hopeful about. Educate yourself Empower yourself by learning as much as possible about breast cancer. While October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the NBCAM organization wants to remind you that breast cancer awareness and education is important all year long. For information, visit the www.NBCAM.org Web site, a year-round resource for breast cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and the public.

L OOKING BETTER HELPS CANCER PATIENTS FEEL BETTER For Nancy Lumb, one of the hardest parts of having cancer was dealing with the appearancerelated side effects of treatment. "I never cried when I was told I had breast cancer or had to tell my mother and husband," says Lumb. "I only cried when I started to lose my hair. Cancer has a way of robbing you of your femininity." Enhancing a woman's self-confidence, by giving her the support and tools she needs to manage her changing appearance during cancer treatment provides renewed hope. It gives her the strength she needs to face her treatment and recovery with greater confidence. When women look better, they feel better.

Silke Endress, Lifestyle of the Lady CEO International Professional Women’s Magazine 24

A survey by Look Good…Feel Better -- a national public service program that helps women cope with the appearance-related changes of cancer treatment -- and Harris Interactive found that 86 percent of women in treatment credit looking better with feeling better. "Now we want women to inspire others by sharing their stories," says Louanne Roark, executive director of Look Good…Feel Better. "We know our workshops have had a tremendous impact on women around the country, and we want to share those encouraging stories with other women."

The organization, which has helped 650,000 women since it began 20 years ago, is launching a national search to find five women who have been touched by cancer and want to share their stories as a way to help others. These women will be honored as the Women of Hope is Beautiful. Women affected by cancer can submit their stories to www.lookgoodfeelbetter.org of hope, strength, and determination. The organization is encouraging entries -- such as essays, poems, pictures, or videos -- that share a personal story of coping with cancer and the impact of the Look Good…Feel Better program. The five women selected will receive a trip to New York and a complimentary makeover. They will also be honored at the organization's annual black-tie gala. As Lumb explains, "I discovered that I can look as good as I did before I got sick, maybe even better." To read more about her experience or share your own inspiring story, visit www.lookgoodfeelbetter.org. Look Good…Feel Better is a collaboration between the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, the American Cancer Society & the National Cosmetology Association., and is dedicated to improving the lives of women, men and teens undergoing cancer treatment by offering advice on how to cope with the appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy, radiation and other forms of treatment.

Healthy Living

Want to be healthy and live longer? Take cues from Japan Japan has the lowest obesity rate in the developed world - 3 percent versus 32 percent in the United States, according to the International Obesity Taskforce. Many believe the good overall health and long life expectancy rate of the Japanese is due to their diet. "People in Japan tend to eat smaller portions of healthier types of food," says Dr. Mark Drucker, medical director of the Center for Advanced Medicine in Encinitas, Calif. "Eating plenty of low-mercury fatty fish, fresh vegetables, and limiting red meat and refined sugars all contribute to this healthy lifestyle. a wide range of colors, including dark green produce such as broccoli, spinach, kale, and Swiss chard. These all provide high levels of antioxidants and vitamin C, and many are shown to have cancer-preventing properties.

What can you do to reap the benefits of the Japanese diet at home? Here are some easy ideas from Dr. Drucker: 1. Try cultural cuisine Sushi, a Japanese diet staple, is popular throughout the United States. Try having a sushi-rolling party with your friends as a fun way to eat healthy and learn about another culture. Making sushi yourself doesn't need to be difficult. Pick up a book with step-by-step instructions and a sushi starter kit with a rolling mat. "Good beginner items that pack a healthy punch are smoked salmon, eel and pre-cooked crab and lobster meat. If you'd prefer to skip the meat, there are many vegetarian options. Try adding carrots, cucumber, green onion and daikon radish for a tasty, and healthy, treat," comments Drucker. 2. Eat fresh veggies every day Eating more fresh vegetables, raw when possible, is a great way to get many of the health benefits enjoyed by the Japanese people. A general rule is to eat vegetables in

Silke Endress, Lifestyle of the Lady CEO International Professional Women’s Magazine 27

3. Consider a healthy detoxifying supplement Chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for the greenest plants on Earth, is a central property of immune-boosting, anti-aging vegetables. "Plants require chlorophyll to obtain energy from light, so it's no surprise an ancient alga called chlorella - which contains the most amount of chlorophyll of any digestible substance can be called nature's green secret weapon when it comes to its long-term energy effect on human health. Chlorophyll is also one of the few and most effective ways to help the body eliminate mercury," says Drucker. 4. Enjoy fatty fish for good health Most people have heard of omega-3, a good type of fatty acid. Research has shown that omega-3 supports cardiovascular health, immune function, and brain health and could even have anti-cancer benefits. Some healthy fish options that are packed with omega-3s include salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies, and sardines. "Not only do these types of foods have many health benefits, but they are absolutely delicious and can be made to order," comments Drucker. "Whether it's steaming some salmon and veggies or incorporating Sun Chlorella tablets into your daily regimen, I truly believe that taking health cues from a traditional Japanese diet can benefit almost everyone."

Business or leisure, driving or flying - travel safely naturally

Weekend getaways, shorter vacations, and overnight business trips are great ways to save money and are becoming more prevalent, according to the Bureau of Transportation. Taking a few simple and natural steps to stay safe and healthy while on the road can not only protect your travel investment, but enhance your entire experience. Refreshed and alert driving diffusion A shorter, thriftier trip is likely to be by car. The inevitable rush to make the most of the limited time away after a tiring work week can create fatigue, so don't make it a dangerous driving situation. Enliven your senses with essential oil scents. Ditch the cardboard cutout car "freshener" that hangs from the rearview mirror. Not only distracting, these products are usually saturated with synthetic fragrance chemicals and probably aren't the best thing to inhale while enclosed in your vehicle. Instead, rely on a sleek essential oil diffuser that plugs into your automobile's phone charger power outlet. These devices feature small paper fiber pads to which you can apply your own custom blend of essential oils, allowing you to not only scent the air inside the car, but also to provide refreshing aromatherapy benefits to help keep you alert and focused on the road.

How clean is your hotel room? Overnight stays in less than posh hotel digs may be part of the money-saving travel trend. Even upscale hotels aren't immune to dirt and germs, or worse, an apparent outbreak of bedbug infestations in the United States, recently publicized by the Environmental Protection Agency. Bedbugs aside, there are always nagging doubts about just how clean a hotel room actually is. Has the shower or tub been scrubbed or merely wiped down? Is the toilet sanitized? Has the bedspread ever really been thoroughly cleaned? Fortunately, there are ways to protect yourself after you check in, but before you settle into your temporary overnight home. Remember to look for pure and natural essential oil brands like Aura Cacia that don't include synthetic petrochemical fragrances. For more information on how to enhance your life through aromatherapy, visit www.auracacia.com.
