Urban Elegance. This year, lemongrass is making the statement. Incidentally, Michelle Obama chose to wear the color on her husband's inaugural day. As the economy took a downturn, dining out has been replaced with invitations to friends and family to dine in. While we're looking for ways to cut spending and save money, we still want to keep our decor -- in the kitchen and on the dinner table -- fresh, modern, and fun for every day and the occasional soiree. There are several ways to wow party goers and stay within your budget. You can repurpose the plates you have or purchase a couple of inexpensive but key pieces like linens and silk flowers to create an entirely different look. Before you do anything, however, take stock. This season's dining decorating trend may already be in your cupboards. Consider adding a few pieces in this contemporary color to each place setting, either a solid napkin or bud vase holding a single fresh orchid. If you already have chocolate- or ivory-colored china, mix in lemongrass-colored serving platters and bowls; the three-way color combo sets the stage for a metropolitan meal. To make guests gasp, go bold with the colors of lemongrass, black, white and several shades of purple. PATRIOTIC PLATING What better way to show your patriotism than with dinnerware in the colors of the flag? Chances are, you already have a set of white or ivory everyday dishes (the top colors on bridal registries), so you can easily add splashes of scarlet and cobalt without spending lots of your hard-earned cash. A simple table runner, flatware and a few large vases in all three colors, and you are all set to celebrate the blessings in life and support your country any day of the year. A UNISEX TABLETOP For a serious, sophisticated dinner setting that appeals to both 'him' and 'her,' turn to colors that mimic menswear. Choose dinnerware in the following color combinations: black, evergreen, marigold and white, or black, chocolate, cobalt blue and ivory. Consider covering the table with a herringbone, houndstooth, or plaid tablecloth. This doesn't have to be a designer label; buy the fabric by the yard at a local arts and crafts store. Place stacked settings -- charger, dinner plate, and salad or fruit bowl -- on top of leather placemats. Use solid napkins, but in a bright accent color to soften the look for female guests. Tangerine works well with chocolates, as does a sunflower shade.

Want to be healthy and live longer? A general rule is to eat vegetables in a wide range of colors, including dark green produce such as broccoli, spinach, kale, and Swiss chard. These all provide high levels of antioxidants and vitamin C, and many are shown to have cancer-preventing properties.

What can you do to reap the benefits of the Japanese diet at home? Here are some easy ideas from Dr. Drucker: 1. Try cultural cuisine Sushi, a Japanese diet staple, is popular throughout the United States. Try having a sushi-rolling party with your friends as a fun way to eat healthy and learn about another culture. Making sushi yourself doesn't need to be difficult. Pick up a book with step-by-step instructions and a sushi starter kit with a rolling mat. "Good beginner items that pack a healthy punch are smoked salmon, eel and pre-cooked crab and lobster meat. If you'd prefer to skip the meat, there are many vegetarian options. Try adding carrots, cucumber, green onion and daikon radish for a tasty, and healthy, treat," comments Drucker. 2. Eat fresh veggies every day Eating more fresh vegetables, raw when possible, is a great way to get many of the health benefits enjoyed by the Japanese people.

3. Consider a healthy detoxifying supplement Chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for the greenest plants on Earth, is a central property of immune-boosting, anti-aging vegetables. "Plants require chlorophyll to obtain energy from light, so it's no surprise an ancient alga called chlorella - which contains the most amount of chlorophyll of any digestible substance can be called nature's green secret weapon when it comes to its long-term energy effect on human health. Chlorophyll is also one of the few and most effective ways to help the body eliminate mercury," says Drucker. 4. Enjoy fatty fish for good health Most people have heard of omega-3, a good type of fatty acid. Research has shown that omega-3 supports cardiovascular health, immune function, and brain health and could even have anti-cancer benefits. Some healthy fish options that are packed with omega-3s include salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies, and sardines. "Not only do these types of foods have many health benefits, but they are absolutely delicious and can be made to order," comments Drucker. "Whether it's steaming some salmon and veggies or incorporating Sun Chlorella tablets into your daily regimen, I truly believe that taking health cues from a traditional Japanese diet can benefit almost everyone." L OVE PANINI ? T OP CHEF ' S TIPS FOR MAKING GRILLED SANDWICHES SAND WICHES AT HOME

Directions Pulse pine nuts in blender to chop. Add oil, three slices cheese torn in small pieces and salt and pepper. Blend to form pesto. Place one slice cheese and turkey on each of two slices bread. Add seven to eight pieces arugula and another slice of cheese on each. Spread three tablespoons pesto on top of each. Close sandwiches and grill for three to five minutes or until golden brown.

This recipe for Smoked Turkey, Pine Nut Pesto, and Sharp Provolone Panini created by Jason Denton will show you the delicious difference natural ingredients can make in a grilled sandwich. For more recipes, visit www.Sargento.com. Gourmet Panini is still a hot trend and many people look to duplicate the bold flavors of restaurant-grilled sandwiches in the comfort of their own homes. While there are countless ways to create a warm delicious panino or grilled sandwich, natural cheese serves as the common thread throughout most recipes. Over the years, sandwich making has evolved beyond the simple stacking of ham and process cheese on white bread. Today, delicious fresh ingredients like turkey, sharp provolone, and arugula are combined on grilled ciabatta bread to create more memorable gourmet Panini. "When I prepare Panini, I only use the freshest ingredients and natural cheese in my recipes," says Denton. "It is important to remember that choosing to cook with deli-quality natural sliced cheeses, like the newly introduced Sargento Sharp Provolone, Vermont Sharp White Cheddar or Reduced Fat Pepper Jack, will offer a greater variety of flavor and complexity to hot grilled sandwiches." When it comes to key ingredients like cheese, consumers know natural is best. In fact, 82 percent of consumers list natural cheese among their favorite toppings on hot grilled sandwiches, versus only 27 percent that choose process cheese. "In the first bite of a perfectly made hot grilled sandwich, you'll taste how natural cheese gives Panini a creamy texture and full-bodied flavor that process cheese can't deliver," says Denton. For the best results, practice these Panini tips from Jason Denton: Fresh ingredients: Good ingredients make a great sandwich. For the freshest taste, use seasonal vegetables and a flavorful natural sliced cheese. Keep it simple. Try not to put more than three main ingredients in your Panini. This allows all the great flavors to come through and ensure a simply delicious sandwich.

fâvvxáá uç Wxá|zÇ I am 21 years old and was born and raised in Ocala, Florida. I want to start by thanking God, my family and friends, and all my true supporters who have stuck with me and supported me these past few years while competing. We are in for a year! I am so excited to start getting ready for Miss Florida USA this summer! This really will be a year to remember. I plan to use my title and crown as a tool to speak to my community. In July I hope to make my family and community proud as I represent my hometown in the Miss Florida USA pageant. I plan to prepare as much as possible to make my mark in the Top 15! I attended Vanguard High School c/o 2005, where I was an avid member of Anchor Club, Varsity Cheerleading (4yrs), Track (3yrs), and Fellowship of Christian Athletes President (1yr) Vice President (1yr), WVHS News Anchor and on Homecoming Committee. I had the wonderful chance to represent my High School and community at Girls State 2004. I was voted Senior Favorite: Most Spirited and Biggest Klutz, on Senior Homecoming Court, an Anchor on our morning T.V show, and had the honor of being Prom Queen of 2005. I also had a chance to be on a wonderful cheerleading squad. We stuck together four years and won a state championship! My High School experience was nothing but amazing! I later moved to Gainesville for school at SFCC. Since then I have moved back to Ocala and have completed school at The Salon Professional Academy. I have been working the past year in the beauty industry as a hairstylist at (en.ve) salon & spa in Ocala.

THE DELICIOUS WOMAN

W

hen was the last time you described your life as “delicious?” I know, you may be thinking delicious, what is that but I hope you are thinking, wow! That sounds wonderful. Many women are breathing and taking up physical space, that's right they are not truly living life. They are caught up in and captive within check lists, to do lists, routines, and schedules and at the end of the day they have not really lived in the moment. That is not the life I want for you and I am sure that is not the life you want for yourself. Living deliciously is not some gimmick it "is" really a possible, viable, and attainable way to BE in your skin, to BE in your life and to BE in the world.

You see... delicious living is centered in "being" versus "doing.” How much of your life do you spend BEING your authentic self? I bet you probably are doing a lot of things but not giving enough time and energy to really being the woman you want to be. Living a delicious life does not take a lot of money or resources in fact it simply takes fearlessness, intention and action. That's right... simply put you can choose to create and live the life you desire in one simple decision that starts with” I am READY and willing to do what it takes to live the life I want.” WHO IS A DELICIOUS WOMAN? A delicious woman is comfortable in her own skin. She creates a life she loves by facing her fears, taking risks, taking action and refuses to have limitations in her life. A delicious woman is living in the right now moment and she knows how to attract and get what she wants out of life. A delicious woman is appealing to others; she is magnetic and able to draw people and things unto herself. She is sweet with goodness and knows how live in the moment and savor all the goodness and juiciness of her life. She loves her life and lives to give "deliciousness" to those whom encounter her. She is a woman who people are drawn to because of the flavor (essence) she illuminates in the world and shares with others. Delicious women get what they want, live life out loud, break through barriers, live with ease and grace, and live to give back to the world. It means you are living a life so sweet that you look forward to its flavor everyday, a life so good people will beg you for the recipe! You can live a delicious life when you choose to with these actions. 1. Face your fears. 2. Create a clear and colorful vision for your life. 3. Being mindful and living in the right now moment. 4. Taking intentional steps towards the life you want. 5. Discovering and releasing your juicy goodness and sharing it with the world 6. Living to give and making it your life's purpose to give back to the world.

Delicious simply put means becoming your best self from the inside out and creating the life you want based on your own definition, values, and standards. amed CEO of WellPoint in June 2007, Angela Braly burst through the glass ceiling of the health insurance industry only to earn $26 million less than her male predecessor did. In 1994, as president and CEO of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Missouri, the savvy and skilled businesswoman was instrumental in converting the nonprofit into an investor-owned company, subsequently, when WellPoint acquired Blue Cross in 2001, Ms. Braly joined them, and grew successfully with the company.

As its executive vice president Braly was responsible for the nation's largest Medicare-claims processing business, health-benefits business, government relations, legal affairs, social-responsibility initiatives, marketing, and the federal employees' public-policy development.

In a world where there is a ranking for just about everything, Texas Tech University alumna Angela Braly, president and CEO of WellPoint, Inc., the nation’s largest health insurance company, is at the top of her game. In June 2007 Angela Braly replaced the outgoing Chairman, President, and CEO Larry C. Glasscock, who retired from WellPoint's day-to-day operations to attend to family needs. In a statement Glasscock said, “Angela has the right combination of intellect, health-policy knowledge, strategic vision, business experience and execution ability, and she is well-suited to lead WellPoint's future success." "She has partnered with me on every major strategic initiative, our board of directors enthusiastically approved Angela's selection as a strong endorsement of our company's strategy, performance, culture, and leadership team." WellPoint was No. 47 on The 2006 DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity® list and No. 30 on the 2006 Fortune 500 list. In 2007 Ms. Braly, was named one of Fortune magazine's 50 most powerful women. In 2008 she was ranked #4 on Forbes magazine’s “World’s Most Powerful Women” list, and was ranked #5 by Fortune magazine on the “50 Most Powerful Women.” In 2009 Ms. Braly was named as one of Modern Healthcare magazine’s “Top 25 Women in Health Care,” and she was one of only two women to lead a Fortune 35 company. Braly manages a company of more than 42,000 associates and is the only woman to lead a Fortune 35 company. WellPoint is the nation's largest health benefits company in terms of medical membership, with approximately 35 million Americans covered nationwide through its affiliated Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield health plans in 14 states and in 2008, WellPoint generated operating revenue in excess of $60 billion. WellPoint’s mission is to improve the lives of the people it serves and the health of its communities through simplifying the connection between health, care, and value. WellPoint is dedicated to improving the lives of the people they serve and the health of their communities. With a reputation for innovation, WellPoint is committed to establishing a relationship with its customers, physicians, hospitals and other health care clinicians as trusted partners. WellPoint's strategy is to offer a diversified mix of products that preserve member choice at competitive prices, while focusing on the development of new hybrid plans that take advantage of the best characteristics of traditional managed care and innovative open access models.

Their business approach is that health care is local, and WellPoint’s affiliated health plans have the strong local presence required to understand and meet local customer needs. We take that responsibility very seriously.” She sees herself not just as a company executive but also as an advocate for health care reform in the U.S. At WellPoint we see diversity management as more than just a strategy; it's a fundamental part of how we do business. Focusing on diversity helps us to better understand and meet the health care needs of the unique communities we serve while actually becoming part of their cultural fabric. Together, with associates, partners, and customers WellPoint is accomplishing the mission of transforming the health care industry - one person, one family, and one community at a time. Ms. Braly received her juris doctor from Southern Methodist University School of Law and her undergraduate degree from Texas Tech University. She was named a Distinguished Alumni of the university in 2007. She says she knew Texas Tech would offer her a good education. “I remember that the professors were incredibly supportive and encouraging,” Braly said. “I also learned to have confidence in my work from Texas Tech. The support of a strong education and excellent faculty gives you the confidence to accomplish great things as you start your career.” While the rankings indicate Braly is indeed accomplishing great things, she’ll just laugh when you ask her about the publicity. “It is an honor, but I can assure you that my family keeps me humble.

Originally the soup giant used a faux mother who portrayed her in Chunky's ''mama's boys.’’ After watching an actress play Donovan's mom, Mrs. McNabb had an epiphany, she wanted to play herself. Wilma received the call she'd been waiting for, ''I remember our agent called and said, 'they want to do something different and they want to use you,''' she said. uring my senior year of high school in 1996, I began to feel pain and pressure in my right ear drum anytime I drank, swallowed, or chewed anything. Sometimes the pain would be severe other times the pain would be tolerable. My mother and father would sometimes see me clamp my hands over my ears in the mornings when I would drink or eat during breakfast. I even complained to them about a little bump felt deep inside the skin behind my right ear lobe. Having been seen by many doctors in my area, I was always given the same diagnosis "you have a wax build-up" or "your lymph nodes and glands are swollen because you are sick" or "you need to have your tonsils removed" nothing I was given or being told helped with the pain that I was continuing to tolerate. On a trip to visit my brother during the summer of my junior year of college (year 2001), I complained to him about a sore throat, and a running nose, he set up an appointment for me to see an ear, nose and throat doctor in the area. During the examination he pressed down in the area and I almost jumped out of the chair from the excruciating pain. He told the nurse that he wanted to have a biopsy done and we scheduled it for the following day.

I was so nervous about the biopsy. A few days later we received the results, this day would change my life forever, and the doctor told me I had cancer. My mother and I arrived at Shands Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida in June at 10:00a.m. I went through a series of tests, and MRI's, anxiously waiting for a second opinion on my biopsy results, I was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, I was scared, but I have a strong family support system. On July 9, 2001 I had the tumor removed and started a month and a half of radiation treatment, it was in my last year at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University it was challenging time. I was not ready for the side effects of the radiation treatments such as hair loss, darkening of the skin, burns, and weight loss, but my family helped me through. So I picked my head up, regained my inner strength, and I finished my last treatment on the 13th of September at 5:00 p.m, and walked out of the hospital ready to begin a new chapter in my life. Having been the youngest patient there to be treated for Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, I truly felt blessed. Not because I was going home, but because I made it through a life changing experience which enabled me to have a new lease on life. In November, I returned to school and I graduated with my Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Administration in 2003. I had a son in April of 2005 and I went back to school and earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix in 2006. Today, I have been in remission from cancer for 8 years, I’m currently pursuing a career in real estate and always thanking and praising god for all his glory, because with him, his love and my family all things are possible.

O

n August 2007 I separated from my husband after 6 years of marriage. Those were some hard and difficult 6 years (my husband is 18 years older than I am). My husband has always tried to control my life.

VENUS

My name is Venus Cummings, I am 38 years old. I moved to Orlando Florida from Puerto Rico in 1989. I have two beautiful daughters and a handsome son whom are my pride and joy. He never accepted my eldest son from my previous marriage, it was a constant battle, and I could not stand it any longer. My husband did not approve of my family or friends and little by little, he isolated me. I decided to start college in 2005. That decision became another challenge, my husband did not approve of my studies, obstacles after obstacles, insults after insults about the major I chose to study. My husband would go on and on about the “wrong choice” I supposedly had made. On June 2007 I began working for McCoy Federal Credit Union as a bank teller. Working at the bank became yet another challenge, and more pressure from my husband he did not approve of my job. I continued attending college even though my husband refused for me to accomplish professional growth, my dreams, or any of my personal goals, which one of them was to complete my Bachelor on Criminal Justice. As all this was happening, I was planning to leave this relationship, which was putting me through unimaginable stress, nervous breakdowns and affecting the well-being of my children. One day, I grabbed my two daughters and left. I contacted my best friend, a cancer survivor too and asked her for shelter and she eventually rented a room/studio for my daughters and me, where we lived for two years. I continued studying while at the same time working to provide for my daughters, it was hard because my husband made my life unbearable, he knew everywhere I went, who I talked to, what I was wearing… everything. It’s terrifying! I tried many times filing an injunction against him through Seminole County since my divorce, and each time the injunction against my husband was denied, however, I did not give up, I filed an injunction against my husband through the Orange County Clerk of Courts. With the assistance of the Harbour House I was able to get the injunction granted since my husband had been previously arrested for aggression.

“After going through biopsies, sonograms and mammograms, my worst fears were confirmed; the test results came back and revealed stage 1 cancer”

Without me realizing it, all that stress was slowly consuming me, taking a direct hit on my body, physically, psychological, and emotionally I found myself distraught. One day I went out for lunch and realized my car was gone. My husband had my car towed, I went crazy; I did not know what to do or how I was going to get around, get home pick and drop off my daughters. I had to pick up my daughters from school, that afternoon. I called the police, the police contacted my husband, my husband told the police, that he had taken the car, that the car was under his name and that he could do anything he wanted.

On March 2008, while watching T.V. and self-examining my breast I noticed an unusual lump on my left breast. I knew right away that the lump was not normal, and I sought medical attention. I scheduled an appointment to see my primary care physician. I was alarmed and panicky; however, leaving matters in God hands I tried to stay positive and calm. While waiting for the test results to come back, I could not help but to be anxious and worried. After going through biopsies, sonograms and mammograms, my worst fears were confirmed; the test results came back and revealed stage-1 cancer. My whole world had come crushing down in front of my eyes and l was helpless to stop it. I was distraught, and could not help but question God, why me? Had I not been through enough? What had I done so bad to deserve this? I knew there was no one in our family with cancer, all the stress from putting up with my husband and the divorce must have cause or contributed to getting the disease. Once I put my self together, and came to my senses I realized that I needed to fight this disease. I had three children who are my life and needed me, which was plenty of reason to battle this disease. It took me three months to get the surgery. I was waiting for one of my sister to come from out of the country to help care for my children and me while I recovered from the surgery. To my surprise and after waiting three months my sister was not coming. By now, my cancer had worsened and was at Stage-2. I made the decision to remove both of my breasts to avoid future spreading. I went under surgery on June 2008, that same day I was supposed to get my reconstruction surgery, however, the surgeon found another tumor hidden below the identified tumor. Once out of surgery the surgeon explained the situation, and immediately I burst into tears. struggle to recover while at the same time care for my children, by myself.

The doctor told me that my cancer was aggressive, and suggested radiation, everyday, for 6 weeks, I took his advice. My skin burned and has a dark shadow appearance; I also have a brown dark spot, which I hope it will clear up slowly. The Oncologist prescribed for me to take Tamofixen for five years twice a day. The Oncologist ordered new test to make sure everything was running accordingly. He ordered another CT scan, a PET scan, it did not show anything with the appendix, now it was showing blood clots in my pelvis! As if I hadn’t enough. The oncologist ordered me to stop taking the medication. The Oncologist ordered me to begin an anticoagulant treatment for six months, as soon as possible since once again my life depended on the treatment. Again my life did an unexpected turn, just when I thought I could get my reconstructive surgery I had to cancel all my plans and can not do the reconstructive surgery until I finished the blood thinner treatment. I thought to myself that God must have a purpose for me if I was still alive and had survive through all this. My children are the reason I won’t give up, they are my inspiration. When all of this is over, I dream of being able to travel with my 3 kids on a Disney 7 day Cruise to the Caribbean. I know my kids would love and truly enjoy the Disney Cruise just the 4 of us together. I dream of being be able to have a new/use cost efficient car that I could call my own, and no one could take it away. I thank God for having great, supporting friends who assisted me through the disease process.

Debora Bradley, President/CEO of 100 Percent, Inc a women’s apparel boutique whose purpose is to celebrate and empower women with fashion tees, lingerie, and accessories. Created by owners Debora Bradley and Nichole Fisher, the name 100 Percent Inc. signifies that each of us is incorporated with 100% of what we need to accomplish that which we were created to do. In an effort to make a difference in the lives of women, by affirming their uniqueness and giving a boost to their self-esteem, we came up with our Affirmation Tee Shirt line. Most of our affirmations are single words because we believe that “ONE” word has the power to change your destiny, if you can really connect to what that word says about you. Your world and your life are created with the words you speak to yourself, as well as to others. Each tee comes with a decree card to carry as a constant reminder of who you are. While searching for the perfect tee shirt, the fabric became the inspiration for our lingerie. It’s sleek, accentuates every curve, and feels like your favorite tee fresh out of the dryer. A solution was right in our hands. The lingerie line was designed to satisfy the need for comfort and femininity. We have transformed the “old ugly tee- shirt” into sexy lingerie. The fabric is a special blend of polyester and cotton that gives the coolness of a tee shirt with the look of sensuality. The key element to our exclusive design is that it can be custom- made for each woman, given our different shapes and sizes. 100 Percent, Inc’s solution to the dilemma of what is more important, comfort or being sexy is revolutionary! As women we are multi-faceted in our daily lives and desire both sex appeal and comfort ability. We are uniquely made; sensual, romantic, lovable women. Sexy, Comfort or Style? Why would any woman choose just one when she can have it all!

We had time to talk to Jada Collins and here’s what she had to say. Silke Endress: Who is Jada Collins? Jada Collins: I would like to think that I am every young girl’s best friend and a “down to earth” girl next door. What were your high school career goals and how did your friends perceive you? I always wanted to be a television broadcaster, however, because of my height I fell into the world of fashion. What was your "AHA" moment? One “aha” for me was: “The world doesn’t revolve around me!” I had to learn that “my” world revolves around me and that “world” consists of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. What were your initial fears about Modeling, and how did you overcome them? I didn’t think I was pretty enough. I had to learn not to compare myself to other women and to be grateful for who God created me to be! I had to learn to be me!

CHOOSE LIFE By: Pastor Ruth Chironna e are living in a time and season when it is easy to feel pressed in from every side. Many of us find ourselves facing financial stresses that we have not felt in a very long time. Our jobs are not as secure as we once felt they were. Some of us have already lost our jobs and are finding out that it is not as easy to gain employment as it used to be. We also find that these stresses affect our home life. We’re not as patient with our loved ones as we once were, and we often wonder where our joy went. Then, we catch ourselves having frequent thoughts of, “Will it always be like this?” or “When will this season end?” Then, we find ourselves asking, “Father God, where are You in all of this? Have You forgotten about me?” Well, I have good news for you! God is still in control! He’s still on the throne! And, He has never left us or forsaken us! Indeed, the children of Israel found themselves wondering, after 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, if God was indeed going to bring deliverance to them and bring them into the Promised Land. As they were about to cross over into the Promise Land, God laid out for His children, His Covenant and the blessings and cursing. In Deuteronomy 30:15 and 19, God instructs: “See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity…So choose life in order that you may live…” Now, that sounds so easy to say, but how do we walk that out in the face of seeming death all around us? The first thing that we need to realize is that choosing life is a choice of our will and it’s a daily choice. The word says, “…I have set before you today…” We have to make choosing life a daily practice because death will also be set before us as well. We need then to ask the question, “If I am to choose life, what does that look like, feel like, and how am I to walk that out?” If we continue to read in Deuteronomy 30:20, we find the key. The answer is three-fold. “By loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice and by holding fast to Him.” The first part of choosing life is, “loving the Lord your God.” In Matthew 22:37 it reads, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” The heart is the seat of our feelings or emotions. The soul is the seat of our will and the mind is the seat of our understanding or intellect. So, in other words, with every part of our being – emotions will intellect – we must love the Lord.

Silke Endress, Lifestyle of the Lady CEO International Professional Women’s Magazine

www.SilkeEndress.com Winter 2009

H

e must be first and foremost in our affections, our choices, and our thinking. When all those areas are surrendered in love to Him, we will find ourselves choosing life.

The second part of choosing life is, “by obeying His voice.” The Word says, “My sheep know my voice.” So, therefore, we need to really learn how to listen to His voice. In other words, take are what you’re listening to. Do we spend most of our day listening to our inner voice of doubt, fear, and unbelief? Or do we listen to the negative input from those around us? Or, are we listening to the voice of the accuser? We need to train our ear to listen to the voice of the Lord, which brings love, faith, power, deliverance, and assurance. When we listen to His voice and obey Him, it will positively affect our internal state of being and we’ll find our words will be full of life and our actions will be full of life. The third part of choosing life is to “hold fast to Him.” That word hold fast or cleave (KJV) in the Hebrew means to follow close or hard after; to be joined together or stick to. In other words, when we are choosing life on a daily basis, we are still going to find ourselves facing situations where all we can do is hang on tight to Him until the storm has passed. We can find peace, joy, comfort, and life in the midst of the storm! So, beloved, wherever you find yourself in this season, know that you have the option of being fully alive by learning how to daily choose life. “See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity…choose life…”

Bishop Mark J. Chironna and Pastor Ruth Chironna The ministry is dedicated to bringing the Lord’s presence to every area of the heart and life of people, with a renewed and fresh model of community care, which embraces spiritual apprenticeship the development, and process of faith formation, and the power of spiritual formation and authentic “soul-friends.” www.tmtic.com Phone: 321-304-4111 Silke Endress, Lifestyle of the Lady CEO International Professional Women’s Magazine

The winning contestant would have the opportunity to work for Trump as the president of one of his companies for at least one year with an annual salary of $250,000. Kwame Jackson had the privilege of being an original contestant in the inaugural The Apprentice show. It all began one day when Kwame, working at Goldman Sachs, was sitting at his desk when his best friend, Dave Smith, e-mailed him about The Apprentice. "Thanks," Jackson replied, "but I've got rich people to call." Jackson liked working for the financial company he was in his third at the firm, a year he calls "the worst years in the equity market since the Great Depression." Smith, who was working at JPMorgan, kept pushing. He thought a spot on a business-strategy show starring Donald Trump had to lead to something good. "He made a decision with imperfect information," Jackson says. "That's what they teach you in business school." Smith still could not convince Kwame to fill out the tenpage application, so Smith got a casting associate on the phone and told her about their credentials. He convinced her the network would want one of them. He thought he was too shy to do well, so he was rooting for Kwame. Smith, Jackson, and the casting director soon were meeting in New York. "We said, 'We know there's a one-black-guy rule in reality television,' “says Jackson, “the casting director started laughing because he knew it was so true." When Jackson asked for a leave of absence from Goldman Sachs to do The Apprentice, his senior managers told him clients wouldn't take him seriously. "They didn't see the vision," Jackson says. He quit. Kwame Jackson was accepted on The Apprentice with 15 other contestants, where each week he learned business lessons from Donald Trump in front of 28 million people. When as a finalist he was fired, opportunity knocked big-time for the 30-year-old Wall Street wiz.

Kwame Jackson, who turned his opportunity to star on the inaugural TV reality show The Apprentice into a $3 billion real estate deal, quickly realized cracking the ceiling of the tightly knit community of real estate developers is a major challenge for Blacks. “The challenges are similar to those in any industry in which there is no critical mass of African-Americans: the battle to infiltrate [the good ol’ boys’ network], to exceed the low expectations of those industry veterans who would prefer to preserve the status quo, and to quickly learn the lessons that your counterparts have learned or been taught over generations,” he says. True to Kwame’s entrepreneurial training at Harvard, Kwame has founded Legacy Holdings LLC, an emerging private investment firm focused on real estate development and Kwame Inc. a personal brand management firm focused on his multi-media efforts as a professional speaker, budding author, and television personality. Keppler Speakers Bureau list Kwame as one of the highest paid and most in-demand speaker amongst those in reality television. He continues to be courted by Fortune 500 firms, major television networks, fashion houses, sports teams, marketers, advertisers, community, civic and political leaders for his input and expertise. Although he was flattered to make both People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People and its 50 Hottest Bachelors list in 2004, Kwame is a businessman first! Kwame's diverse efforts have been recognized with acclaim and accolades that include Keys to the City from Detroit, Indianapolis, Trenton, and Columbia; a National Entrepreneur Award from the United States Department of Commerce Small Business Administration and Minority Business Development Agency; and the declaration of "Kwame Jackson Day" by the Mayor of Charlotte, NC Kwame's hometown.

dmiral Mike Mullen was sworn in as the 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on October 1, 2007. He serves as the principal military advisor to the president, the Secretary of Defense, the National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council.

One of the few remaining Vietnam veterans in the top ranks of the military, Admiral Mullen was also one of the few candidates for the chairman's job who had little connection with the handling of the war in Iraq, which may have been a positive trait in the mind of Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, who recommended him to succeed Gen. Peter Pace. Since taking office, Admiral Mullen has proclaimed himself satisfied with security progress in Iraq, although he has said he sees little political progress there. And he set himself at odds with the more hawkish elements of the Bush Ronen Zilberman/Associated Press administration by discounting military action as an effective way to deal with any threat posed by Iran's nuclear program. Over the course of 2008, Admiral Mullen sought advice from the retired generals who revolted against former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, reached out to the former Army chief who was vilified for saying more troops were needed in Iraq and invited to dinner prominent Democrats like Gregory B. Craig, Mr. Obama’s choice for White House counsel. His efforts may have been an attempt to soothe the military after the cataclysmic Mr. Rumsfeld, or an anticipation of a change of administration — or both. Admiral Mullen, the son of a former Hollywood press agent whose clients included Anthony Quinn and Julie Andrews, has a world view that friends say is closer to that of Mr. Obama than to Mr. Bush. As the man in charge of training and equipping the military, Admiral Mullen’s desire to ease the strain on forces fighting on two fronts may well dovetail with Mr. Obama’s desire to draw down American troops in Iraq. As the oldest of five children, Admiral Mullen needed a scholarship for college, and he got one when he was recruited to play basketball for the Naval Academy at Annapolis. To the amazement of his family, he took to the life instantly. “I got there and met the best people I’ve ever been around in my life,” Admiral Mullen said. Among his acquaintances in the class of 1968 were Admiral Blair; Senator Jim Webb, Democrat of Virginia; and Oliver L. North, the Reagan-era official who secretly sold weapons to Iran to support the anti-Marxist rebels of Nicaragua. Admiral Mullen throws regular dinners at his 19th-century home on a small naval compound near the State Department, where the walls are not hung with medals but framed show bills from nearly every Broadway show that he and his wife have attended. Recent guests have included Brent Scowcroft, the national security adviser to the first President Bush who enraged the second when he publicly warned against war with Iraq A native of Los Angeles, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1968. He commanded three ships: the gasoline tanker USS Noxubee (AOG 56), the guided missile destroyer USS Goldsborough (DDG 20) and the guided missile cruiser USS Yorktown CG 48. As a flag officer Mullen commanded Cruiser-Destroyer Group 2, the George Washington Battle Group, and the U.S. 2nd Fleet/NATO Striking Fleet Atlantic. Ashore he has served in leadership positions at the Naval Academy, in the Navy's Bureau of Personnel, in the Office of the Secretary of Defense and on the Navy Staff. He was the 32nd Vice Chief of Naval Operations from August 2003 to October 2004. Prior to becoming chairman, Mullen served as the 28th Chief of Naval Operations. Kay Bailey Hutchison U.S. State Senator, Texas

Silke Endress, Lifestyle of the Lady CEO International Professional Women’s Magazine

I

s the senior United State Senator from Texas and a candidate for the 2010 Texas gubernatorial election. She is a member of the Republican Party. In 2001, she was named one of the thirty most powerful women in America by Ladies Home Journal. She is the first female U.S. senator for Texas and the first Texas U.S. senator to receive more than four million votes in a single election.

In 1993, Texans elected Kay Bailey Hutchison to the United States Senate in a special election, making her the first -- and, to date, the only -- woman elected to represent the state in the Senate. One year later, she was re-elected to a full six-year term. In 2000, she received more votes for her re-election to a second full term than any other statewide candidate had ever received. And in 2006, she was again re-elected by an overwhelming margin. Sen. Hutchison is the Senior Republican on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. Additionally, she serves on the Appropriations Committee, the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, and the Committee on Rules and Administration. In the 110th Congress, Sen. Hutchison served as the Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee. Sen. Hutchison is a member of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly (RNHA) National Advisory Committee, and she is Chairman of the West Point Board of Visitors. In 2008, Sen. Hutchison authored an amicus curiae brief for the Supreme Court case DC v. Heller, affirming an individual’s right to keep and bear arms. Her brief was signed by the Vice President of the United States and by more members of Congress than any other brief in U.S. history. Senator Hutchison has played a vital role in shaping America's defense policy and fulfilling our nation's promises to our veterans as the former Chairman and now the Ranking Member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and as a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense. She introduced and passed legislation creating an Overseas Basing Commission, which conducted a comprehensive review of the U.S. military's global footprint to help ensure that our Armed Forces are prepared to meet 21st century threats. She currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Visitors for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The senator's Texas roots run deep. Thomas Rusk of Nacogdoches was the first Texan to hold the U.S. Senate seat she currently occupies. He and Senator Hutchison's great-great-grandfather, Charles S. Taylor, were friends, and both signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Senator Hutchison grew up in La Marque, Texas and graduated from the University of Texas and UT Law School. She was twice elected to the Texas House of Representatives. In 1990, she was elected Texas State Treasurer. In June 2000, she and several colleagues coauthored Nine and Counting: The Women of the Senate, and in 2004, she released her second book, American Heroines: The Spirited Women Who Shaped Our Country. Sen. Hutchison published her most recent bestseller, Leading Ladies: American Trailblazers, in October 2007. The senator lives in Dallas with her husband, Ray, and their two children, Bailey and Houston.

eg Whitman, 53, is one of the world’s most respected business leaders. Meg has earned a reputation as a smart, tough, problem solver, a collaborative team builder, and a proven job creator. In February 2009 Meg announced her intention to seek the Republican nomination for Governor of California. Committed to rebuilding the state’s economy and creating jobs, reforming the budget process, championing public education, and with pride in the state’s diverse population, Meg is the right leader for this challenging time. Leading eBay from 1998 to 2008, Meg helped the company grow from 30 employees and a little over $4 million in revenue to more than 15,000 employees, nearly $8 billion in revenue, and a network of 12 million users in California alone. Under Meg’s leadership, eBay expanded globally and developed a culture and infrastructure that turned eBay into an unparalleled business success story. Prior to her tenure at eBay; Meg distinguished herself in various leadership positions with Procter & Gamble, Bain & Company, Disney, Stride Rite Corporation, FTD, and Hasbro. Meg is only one of seven women to be consistently ranked among the world’s most influential people by Time magazine. The Wall Street Journal named her one of the “50 Women to Watch” in 2005; Fortune ranked her the most powerful woman in business in 2004 and 2005; and Business Week has included her on its list of the 25 most powerful business managers every year since 2000. During the 2008 presidential primary campaign season, Governor Mitt Romney asked Meg to serve as his National Finance Co‐Chair; she helped raise more than $12 million in the Golden State. When Romney ended his campaign, Senator John McCain asked Meg to serve as National Co‐Chair for McCain‐Palin2008. In California, Meg has helped raise almost $8 million for the California Republican Party. She personally contributed to and participated in numerous Get Out the Vote efforts on behalf of congressional and legislative candidates. Meg received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Princeton University and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School. Her husband, Griff Harsh IV, is a neurosurgeon at Stanford University Medical Center. Meg and Griff have two college‐age sons, Griff and Will. The family lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Meg has a passion for business and for helping people achieve their dreams. Her 30-year career includes helping companies, such as Stride Rite, Bain & Company and Procter & Gamble, and working on much-loved brands, such as Mr. Potato Head, Keds, and Barney. At FTD, she helped a network of florists strengthen their business networks. And at Hasbro and Disney, she helped spark the imaginations of children and encouraged them to live to their full potential with educational toys, shows, and programs. In 1998, she joined a start-up company in Silicon Valley. At the time, few people could see the potential in a company with 30 employees and a little over $4 million in revenue. But Meg did. She was inspired by what she saw -- a company dedicated to helping millions of people reaches their goals of launching and building their own businesses. And she knew. This was the company for her.

CHANGING JOBS? WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR 401(K) PLAN Changing jobs may represent an exciting time in your career by providing new challenges and an opportunity to enhance your skills and abilities. On the other hand, if you're leaving a job due to a lay off, termination or move, it can be a stressful process. And the decision of what to do with your 401(k) plan can add to the stress. With the economic downturn, a startling 45 percent of individuals are cashing out their 401(k) plans when leaving their companies. It's important to understand all of the choices you have and the impact of the decision you make. * If your vested account balance is $5,000 or more, you can leave your money where it is, and taxes won't be due until you withdraw money from the plan. If your vested account balance is under $5,000, you may be forced by your employer to take a distribution. One option is to roll your 401(k) account into an Individual Retirement Account. If you request a direct rollover -meaning you have the money transferred directly into the IRA -you won't owe taxes until you withdraw money from the account. You can also receive the money first and then roll it to an IRA. This is called an indirect rollover. You will have 60 days to deposit the funds in an IRA. Because the money was not rolled directly to the IRA, 20 percent will automatically be withheld. You will need to make that up when you send the money to the IRA administrator.

CHANGING JOBS? WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR 401(K) PLAN If you are going to work for a new company and will have a 401(k) plan there, you can roll your former company's 401(k) money into your new employer's plan. As with a rollover to an IRA, if you request a direct rollover, you won't have to pay taxes until you withdraw money from the account. You can take a cash distribution for the full amount of your balance, but, of course, you'll pay income tax on the money you receive. In addition, if you are under age 59 1/2, you may be subject to a 10 percent federal income tax penalty. And because you are receiving the money, 20 percent of your balance will be automatically withheld. You can leave some of the money in the plan and take the rest in cash or roll it to an IRA or new plan. Again, remember that any money taken in cash and not rolled over directly will be subject to the 20 percent withholding.

your former company's plan or rolling the funds to an IRA both enable the money to remain tax-deferred. And if you elect the IRA option, you can access your assets at any time, plus you'll likely have a wider array of investment choices. Rolling funds to an IRA can enable you to choose funding vehicles that offer downside protection for income purposes and guaranteed lifetime income. For instance, IRA assets may be invested in a variable annuity, which offers optional living benefits that, at an additional cost, provide a guarantee of lifetime retirement income with potential for income increases (but not decreases) based on market performance.

if you request a direct rollover, you won't have to pay taxes

While taking some or all of the money in cash may seem appealing, it can result in taxes and penalties. It can also have a long-term effect on your retirement savings. To see how taxes and penalties may impact your personal situation, check out a distribution impact calculator.

If your job change occurs close to when you planned to retire, you may be concerned about maximizing future income. If this is within five years of retirement, you are entering the most critical time of your investment life, a time Prudential calls "The Retirement Red Zone," which encompasses the five year period before and after retirement. The decisions you make during this 10-year span may have a fundamental impact on how you spend the 20-plus years of life that follow.

So which option is best? There's no one right answer to this question. Leaving the assets in

Business or leisure, driving or flying - travel safely naturally

Weekend getaways, shorter vacations, and overnight business trips are great ways to save money and are becoming more prevalent, according to the Bureau of Transportation. Taking a few simple and natural steps to stay safe and healthy while on the road can not only protect your travel investment, but enhance your entire experience. Refreshed and alert driving diffusion A shorter, thriftier trip is likely to be by car. The inevitable rush to make the most of the limited time away after a tiring work week can create fatigue, so don't make it a dangerous driving situation. Enliven your senses with essential oil scents. Ditch the cardboard cutout car "freshener" that hangs from the rearview mirror. Not only distracting, these products are usually saturated with synthetic fragrance chemicals and probably aren't the best thing to inhale while enclosed in your vehicle. Instead, rely on a sleek essential oil diffuser that plugs into your automobile's phone charger power outlet. These devices feature small paper fiber pads to which you can apply your own custom blend of essential oils, allowing you to not only scent the air inside the car, but also to provide refreshing aromatherapy benefits to help keep you alert and focused on the road. How clean is your hotel room?

Overnight stays in less than posh hotel digs may be part of the money-saving travel trend. Even upscale hotels aren't immune to dirt and germs, or worse, an apparent outbreak of bedbug infestations in the United States, recently publicized by the Environmental Protection Agency. Bedbugs aside, there are always nagging doubts about just how clean a hotel room actually is. Has the shower or tub been scrubbed or merely wiped down? Is the toilet sanitized? Has the bedspread ever really been thoroughly cleaned? Fortunately, there are ways to protect yourself after you check in, but before you settle into your temporary overnight home. Remember to look for pure and natural essential oil brands like Aura Cacia that don't include synthetic petrochemical fragrances. For more information on how to enhance your life through aromatherapy, visit www.auracacia.com.

Five basic steps to financial security in any economy

Women & Money

N

o one is left without feeling the affects of the current economy. Start building your financial security by following the five basic steps below.

1. Begin an emergency cash fund -- Create a savings account and resolve to pay yourself first by setting aside 5 to 10 percent of your salary each month. 2. Pay down your credit cards -- Credit card debt is the No. 1 obstacle to a secure financial future, and knowing your credit score is essential. Check it once a year. 3. Create a financial plan using life insurance as the foundation -- An insufficient life insurance plan can expose your family to significant financial risks. To learn more about life insurance, call (866) 331-3078 and speak with a life insurance specialist with SBLI USA, a company that specializes in life insurance policies. Or, go to www.sbliusa.com to get a free, no-obligation quote. 4. Empower yourself by creating a budget -- Be prudent with your spending. Write down everything you spend each month and cut back on non-essentials. 5. Optimize your retirement plan -- Take advantage of 401(k) deferred income tax benefits; you could be missing out on free money. If your work doesn't allow you to participate in a 401(k), consider opening up an IRA; or perhaps both.

SIMPLE TIPS FOR PROMOTING BREAST CANCER AWARENESS IN YOUR OWN LIFE

B

reast cancer is a prolific disease with an estimated 192,370 new cases diagnosed this year in women and 1,910 new cases diagnosed in men, according to the National Cancer Institute.

This year, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month celebrates 25 years of promoting awareness, education, and empowerment. Since its inception a quarter century ago, NBCAM has grown into a partnership of national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies at the forefront of promoting important breast cancer issues. In recognition of this 25th anniversary milestone, here are five simple ways to celebrate breast cancer awareness in your own life, courtesy of the NBCAM organization:

Know your risks The risk of developing breast cancer is not the same for all women. According to the National Cancer Institute age is the single most important risk factor for breast cancer. But research has also shown that personal and family history of breast cancer, alterations in certain genes, reproductive and menstrual history, body weight, level of physical activity and alcohol consumption are among the factors that affect a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. Talk to your doctor about your risk of developing breast cancer. Practice healthy habits While there are some breast cancer risk factors that women cannot avoid - such as age and genetics - there are also steps that women can take to help prevent breast cancer on their own. Women should know that exposure to tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption are risk factors for breast cancer, as well as other cancers. In addition, research suggests that women can decrease their risk of cancer simply by eating healthy and exercising regularly. Make small changes now to embrace a healthier, more active lifestyle tomorrow. You may want to start by adding a brisk lunch time walk to your day, adding more fruits and vegetables, and limiting fat and alcohol in your diet. Schedule your annual mammogram Evidence shows that early detection of breast cancer greatly improves a woman's chance for

successful treatment, and scheduling regular mammograms is the most effective way of catching cancer early. The American Cancer Society recommends that all women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year, and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. For more information about breast cancer and screenings and to locate a free or low-cost clinic, visit www.cdc.gov/cancer/breast or call (800) CDC-Info. Know that there is hope Thanks to early detection and improvements in treatment, more women are surviving breast cancer, remaining disease-free and living longer, healthier lives. Today, nearly 90 percent of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer will survive their disease at least five years, up from just 75 percent 35 years ago, according to the National Cancer Institute. Moreover, the death rate from breast cancer in women has decreased by 2.2 percent annually between 1990 and 2004, according to the American Cancer Society. Today, there is a flourishing community of 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, and there is a great deal to be hopeful about. Educate yourself Empower yourself by learning as much as possible about breast cancer. While October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the NBCAM organization wants to remind you that breast cancer awareness and education is important all year long. For information, visit the www.NBCAM.org Web site, a year-round resource for breast cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and the public.

L OOKING BETTER HELPS CANCER PATIENTS FEEL BETTER For Nancy Lumb, one of the hardest parts of having cancer was dealing with the appearancerelated side effects of treatment. "I never cried when I was told I had breast cancer or had to tell my mother and husband," says Lumb. "I only cried when I started to lose my hair. Cancer has a way of robbing you of your femininity." Enhancing a woman's self-confidence, by giving her the support and tools she needs to manage her changing appearance during cancer treatment provides renewed hope. It gives her the strength she needs to face her treatment and recovery with greater confidence. When women look better, they feel better.

Silke Endress, Lifestyle of the Lady CEO International Professional Women’s Magazine

A survey by Look Good…Feel Better -- a national public service program that helps women cope with the appearance-related changes of cancer treatment -- and Harris Interactive found that 86 percent of women in treatment credit looking better with feeling better. "Now we want women to inspire others by sharing their stories," says Louanne Roark, executive director of Look Good…Feel Better. "We know our workshops have had a tremendous impact on women around the country, and we want to share those encouraging stories with other women."

The organization, which has helped 650,000 women since it began 20 years ago, is launching a national search to find five women who have been touched by cancer and want to share their stories as a way to help others. These women will be honored as the Women of Hope is Beautiful. Women affected by cancer can submit their stories to www.lookgoodfeelbetter.org of hope, strength, and determination. The organization is encouraging entries -- such as essays, poems, pictures, or videos -- that share a personal story of coping with cancer and the impact of the Look Good…Feel Better program. The five women selected will receive a trip to New York and a complimentary makeover. They will also be honored at the organization's annual black-tie gala. As Lumb explains, "I discovered that I can look as good as I did before I got sick, maybe even better." To read more about her experience or share your own inspiring story, visit www.lookgoodfeelbetter.org. Look Good…Feel Better is a collaboration between the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, the American Cancer Society & the National Cosmetology Association., and is dedicated to improving the lives of women, men and teens undergoing cancer treatment by offering advice on how to cope with the appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy, radiation and other forms of treatment.

hen you think of the colors associated with fall, green doesn't necessarily come to mind. Environmentally speaking however, it should. There's no better time than now to lessen your home's impact on the environment and change the way you decorate and live. So, why not go green this fall? It's not nearly as difficult to become earth-friendly as you might think. "From products that contribute to good indoor air quality to ones that truly reflect the 'reduce, reuse, recycle' mantra, the number of affordable green interior decorating products has literally exploded within the past five years," says Donna Schroeder, Dutch Boy color marketing and design manager. These days, you can find stylish, eco-friendly design elements for every room in the house. And, contrary to popular belief, going green doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style for sustainability. The two can coexist quite effortlessly. You can start simple by dressing your bed in luxurious sheets, throws, and comforters made from fabrics such as rich, renewable bamboo or soft, organic cotton. Cover your floors with formaldehyde-free carpets constructed of recycled fibers or select a natural material, like stone, slate or even concrete. Then, hang energy-efficient window treatments with high insulation and shading properties. Don't stop there. Spice up your tired sofa with a design-forward slipcover and throw pillows crafted from 100 percent recycled materials. Add bright recycled glass plates and serving pieces to your china cabinet. Buy furniture made from sustainably harvested wood or, better yet, visit local secondhand shops and repurpose. Or, look around your own home and see what you already have that can be adapted for a new use. You'd be surprised what a little creativity and some good old-fashioned elbow grease can do. If you're looking to add bold, fun color, paint fits perfectly into this overall green scheme. Silke Endress, Lifestyle of the Lady CEO International Professional Women’s Magazine

It's an inexpensive, effective and, most importantly, environmentally-minded way to change the look and feel of an entire room. Using paints formulated without VOCs, such as Dutch Boy's new Refresh interior paint with exclusive odor-eliminating Arm & Hammer technology, takes your home one step closer to reducing your environmental impact while leaving your interior looking fresh, modern and filled with personality. Many home improvement products, including Refresh, are also Indoor Air Quality certified by The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute, a nonprofit, industry-independent organization that certifies indoor products that meet satisfactory indoor air emissions standards. Keep in mind that greening your home, inside or out, doesn't happen in a matter of minutes or even overnight. It's an ongoing process. The limit to how green your home can be is up to how willing you are to adjust your lifestyle. The choice is yours. "It doesn't take any grand gestures to start going green," Schroeder says. "Tiny changes add up to make a big overall impact on the environment."

Masterpiece mirrors Occupying a majority of wall space in most baths, plate-glass mirrors are functional, yet not very aesthetically pleasing. To solve this problem, add BEFORE easy-to-install mirror frames, such as Mirrorscapes by Moen, which are available in five different styles and a variety of finishes to beautifully coordinate in your bath. All you need for this project is a measuring tape, marker, a saw, and about 30 minutes. Mirrorscapes proprietary installation system makes transforming a plate-glass mirror quick, easy, and secure. Installation templates perfectly position the mounting brackets, ensuring proper alignment of the frame straights and decorative corners. "The system is nearly error-proof," says Tim Bitterman, group product manager for Creative Specialties International. "The template pieces ensure perfect alignment, while the decorative corner frame pieces cover straight-end frame pieces - to disguise most cutting errors." Pretty painting Adding color can dramatically transform any room, and luckily painting is an extremely simple project. However, success lies in the initial preparation and tools you use to get the job done. Before you even open a can of paint, be sure to repair any holes or cracks, wash the walls, tape off trim and windows, and cover furniture and floors with canvas or plastic drop cloths. Next, be sure you have a quality paint brush and roller cover - as cheap options can lose bristles, shed, or spread paint unevenly. Finally, choose a quality latex paint, such as Dutch Boy, in your favorite color and start painting. By using preparatory steps and products like the pros, you'll ensure your end results will look like you hired a costly professional.

Admirable accessories Since your paper holder, tank lever or towel bars in the bath are functional, you may have never thought about replacing them. However, this simple project takes minutes, requires no special tools, and new updated styles and finishes can greatly enhance the look and functionality of your bath. Start by choosing accessories that coordinate with the other finishes in your bath. Manufacturers, such as Moen, offer a variety of styles that perfectly match or coordinate with the style and finish of your faucet. To keep towels off the floor and clutter off the countertops, add unique accessories, such as a double towel bar or glass shelf. To entice you to change the paper, update your springloaded paper holder with a pivoting paper holder. Finally, add a distinctive touch with a perfectly coordinating decorative tank lever. Each of these accessories installs minutes. Just screw the mounting hardware into the wall and lock the decorative accessory into place. Toilet tank levers are equally as easy - no need to turn off the water or drain the tank.
