Back to the Future

Remains, traces and other testimonies

“Back to the Future”: steirischer herbst 2015 takes a hard look both back and forward. The fact that the future can prove dangerous without a profound analysis of the present and the past, is made evident by a whole array of science-fiction and time-travel films such as “Metropolis”, “Terminator” and the “Back to the Future” trilogy. Their futuristic and utopian film aesthetic cuts to the core of our modern reality of life with terrifying precision. However, our cars aren’t lifting off the ground just yet, as US director Robert Zemeckis predicted in 1985. Instead, former visions of a menacing future have become part and parcel of our everyday lives: the increasing pace of all spheres of life, social developments characterised by all kinds of violence and radicalisation or scenarios of global environmental disasters that we perceived as unrealistic and exaggerated as recently as the 1980s. One common feature of many of these films is time-travelling from the future to the past, setting the course in the present to change the future for the good. Veronica Kaup-Hasler Today, time-travels, like those of Marty McFly (forecast to land in the future on 21 October 2015), still derive from a futuristic idea lying ahead of us. Anyone who wants to look and think ahead, to make themselves, as it were, compatible with the future, and, at the same time, not letting heritage deteriorate into a sentimental apparatus, must rethink the past, scrutinise, review and critically interrogate the old. steirischer herbst playfully picks up on this idea, focusing in many different ways on the notion of “inheritance” – our present is yesterday’s future. This not only involves reaching far back into the retro worlds of pop culture. Rather, current discussions concerning common cultural heritage – based on whatever definition – have long since become part of a discourse on the traditional values of western society in its dialogue with communities that work differently. What do we inherit and how do we handle this inheritance? What do we archive and what do we pass on to future generations? What must we say goodbye to? What criteria do we apply to the priorities of the future? What will today’s generation be able to leave to their children? All of these questions crop up in different forms at steirischer herbst, reflected in a wide variety of forms within the programme. 1

preface How the past and future interweave is already manifested by the central venue: the steirischer herbst festival centre, is this year based at the GrazMuseum, a location devoted to preserving and constantly reinterpreting past and present urban space. Its rooms on the ground floor are transformed into a space station by the Romebased architecture collective orizzontale. Star Trek anyone? – that magnificent fantasy of the future from the past century, with its papiermâché planets and tight-fitting stretch-fabric zip-up costumes. But there can be no science-fiction without aliens and communication with distant worlds. This question – how can we devise a language, a sign system for the future? – is the starting point of the herbst exhibition “Hall of Half-Life”, presented by New Zealand curator Tessa Giblin at the GrazMuseum. Above and beyond being an enjoyable thought experiment, this is a profoundly ecological and political question – even if you just consider how much buried nuclear waste there is that will one day, perhaps long before the end of its halflife, be discovered, posing a threat to future civilisations. And because preserving things always implies reinterpreting what already exists, Irish artist Gerard Byrne overwrites and comments on the permanent exhibition at the GrazMuseum in his own way. Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien, takes a look at artistic legacy in its retrospective of the work of Jörg Schlick, who was a colourful and central figure for visual arts in Graz and whose traces can still be found in the work of subsequent generations of artists. The exploration of the notion of inheritance is a very different one at <rotor>, with an exhibition taking a look at the link between political power and respective national historiography and myth formation. Or at Camera Austria, where the focus is on the question of a possible historiography without national interests. Talking of artistic and political legacies: the documentary theatre company Rimini Protokoll deals with Adolf Hitler’s manifesto “Mein Kampf”, which will be available to the public once again (at least in Germany) as of 2016. In addition, steirischer herbst is again travelling far and wide around Styria, laying down a number of artistic axes: in zones hit hard by migration – in the municipality of Vordernberg and in the Leoben region, for example – it is particularly evident how the shift in demographic plate tectonics caused by migration to larger cities is both a global and local phenomenon that we will have to tackle. What historical legacy is rooted in these regions and what will these places look like in fifty years’ time? How can we interpret concepts such as reusing, redimensioning or recycling? Will nature reclaim its original space and grow wild? What strategies for preserving jobs and communities are currently being tested?

preface When Theater im Bahnhof develops a play about everyday life in Vordernberg and life within the controversial Anhaltezentrum (detention centre), then one aim is to use the devices of theatre to investigate the many different aspects of this project beyond media debates. A different mode of field research is promised by the Nesterval group, who invite visitors to take part in a kind of performative paper-chase around Vordernberg, a place steeped in history. And in Leoben, visual artist Ulla von Brandenburg transforms the disused Porubsky Halle into a space for art, appropriated and used by local and international artists; among others by the herbst conference which, under the title of “Future Perfect”, sets out to interrogate our present as a future past. This wide-ranging programme, that we can only outline here, kicks off with a premiere preceded by several years of preparation. The composer Johannes Maria Staud meets the writer Josef Winkler. Their joint work “Specter of the Gardenia oder Der Tag wird kommen”, specially developed for steirischer herbst, is a subtle interplay of music, text and film. Not an opera, but an installation-based concert performance, that can also be related to the leitmotif of “Back to the Future” – with glimpses back to the childhood of Josef Winkler and ominous prospects of an endangered future. Talking about music and the future: musikprotokoll also takes a look back and forward with this year’s “Future Vintage” programme, for example as part of a series of vintage concerts featuring numerous electroacoustic rarities from past decades and a huge array of historical loudspeakers. Or as part of “Nixe”, a series of new sound installations on the Murinsel paying tribute to Ludwig Salvator, a connoisseur of the art of living and a researcher of the Mediterranean. The end of the festival is a danced homage by choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker to the Brian Eno song “Golden Hours” about the passing of time. Between these two artistic poles, steirischer herbst once again launches a barrage of contemporary art. As always, with a number of (world) premieres, laboratories, processes and experiments in all genres of art. We – the artists, the team, the partners of steirischer herbst – look forward to numerous experiences, encounters and events, and to an active exchange with you!

steirischer herbst 2015 opens with an installation-based concert performance. Composer Johannes Maria Staud and poet Josef Winkler venture a contemporary music theatre experiment together with Ensemble Modern. The 2015 festival opening is another artistic venture: the composer Johannes Maria Staud meets the writer Josef Winkler. Their joint work, specially developed for steirischer herbst, is a subtle interplay of music and text. Not an opera, but an installation-based concert performance. A contemporary music theatre experiment.

“Specter of the Gardenia oder Der Tag wird kommen” – surrealist Marcel Jean’s sculpture inspired Josef Winkler to create an unusual surrealist monologue. Formally, his text consists of three elements: litany-style invocations of an imaginary vis-à-vis alternate with retrospective views of a Catholic childhood in Carinthia and powerful plaints on contemporary society. “You petroleum society, you watchers of our tragedy, with the tattooed model of a gallows in the jumpy hollows of your knees, the plagiarised plastic roses on your threadbare wreaths, you who take the sepulchral smile at its word with the smell of fresh ink mixed with human heart blood – oily hand on heart! – how many axes does your heaven need anyway?” The Austrian Johannes Maria Staud is one of the most internationally renowned composers of his generation. In close collaboration with the Büchner Prize winner Josef Winkler he developed the composition for twenty-two instrumentalists of Ensemble Modern. The main speaking part of the evening is played by the actor Johannes Silberschneider, who has received several prizes for his numerous film and television roles, winning the Grand Diagonale Acting Award in 2012. The artistic team headed by the young director Sofia Simitzis translates the artistic montage into three dimensions, into a kind of image or world machine. Large format projections, unusual objects, light, images, and the actions of the speaker and the ensemble interweave – engaging all the senses.

In adapting the GrazMuseum as a festival centre, Italian architecture collective orizzontale are reaching for the stars: entitled “Spin-Off”, they are creating a retro-futuristic space station – command centre and bar. This intervention, that can also be seen as a metaphor, reflects the leitmotif of this year’s festival “Back to the Future”, looking both forward into a distant future and back to a time when outer space was still a place of boundless possibilities.

While the enthusiasm for space travel of the 1960s and 1970s has yet to lead to the colonisation of unknown planets, NASA technologies have often revolutionised life on earth – with countless by-products and secondary uses – spin-offs: today we take digital cameras, freeze-dried food, solar cells, and water-repellent fabrics for granted as part of everyday life and, at the same time, they are legacies of the race to the moon.

Using the museum building as orizzontale’s space (station) installation symbolises a reappraisal of the past and the future. Interactive displays show what was once seen as futuristic – with visitors able to try their hand at computer games from decades past or watch historical films from NASA’s archives. Also, a six-metre-high rocket will be positioned in the square outside the Dreifaltigkeitskirche as a temporary landmark, enabling communication from the walk-in rocket capsule with the command centre at the festival centre. And while a journey to hitherto unexplored solar systems is visualised in the GrazMuseum courtyard, inside the belly of the space station you can ponder what distant worlds may really hold in store for us over a galactic cocktail.

For years artist Phoebe Davies has been exploring female role models and the everyday attitude of young women to feminism and gender inequality. With total everyday pragmatism in workshops with a wide range of communities and groups. Against this backdrop “Influences” was developed as an art project and meeting place, where the focus is not just on beautiful fingernails and smart style, but also around the question of how political the pop cultural mainstream can be. For the project, Davies collaborates with young women in Graz to research social, political and personal stories, experiences and, above all, biographies of women who serve as female role models beyond Beyoncé and Pink. On the basis of their findings they will develop printed nail designs (or nailwraps). These fingernail-sized portraits will be offered at the temporary nail bar in the festival centre. During the manicure and application of the nailwraps, the women from Graz will provide information about the history and significance of the woman depicted on the particular nailwrap, but also about their own experiences and attitudes. In addition, Phoebe Davies and the participants will also run an informal salon in the nail bar’s waiting area, where they will invite guests to discussions and short talks. The project has already been realised at such renowned venues as Tate Britain, has also featured in magazines including Vogue and for the first time is being staged in the German-speaking world.

Salvaged everyday stories/history and dumped knowledge – visitors can rediscover discarded memories in a private collection housed at the festival centre.

Over the past three decades, Joachim Hainzl has built up an archive of dumped knowledge and discarded memories. All parts of this random collection were disposed of by their owners and salvaged, ordered and rescued from oblivion by the private collector Hainzl. There is middle-class, conservative literature alongside post-war advice booklets, blood-and-soil tomes alongside colourful magazines from the 1960s. Personal letters, photo albums, contemporary documents, and knick-knacks bring people and their history/stories back to life.

For five days, the majority of the private collection is being transferred to the festival centre: as a personally hosted open-shelf library, as an exhibited archive in which people can browse. In readings from military letters and love letters, and in discussions visitors can immerse themselves in human fates so as to permanently inscribe these splinters of everyday history in collective memory.

In creating his multimedia works, Irish artist Gerard Byrne draws on a range of different sources including literature, pop culture, art history and contemporary history, selectively borrowing images and stories and viewing them by presentday standards. He analyses and works on them in order to gain an understanding of the construction of the present in general. So far he has not only considered Samuel Beckett, André Breton or Donald Judd, but also the Playboy Magazine and even the mystery of Loch Ness. steirischer herbst has moved into the GrazMuseum with its festival centre, where the permanent exhibition “360 Graz. The City in All Times” examines the history of Graz from different perspectives. Gerard Byrne has now been given carte blanche not only to engage with the permanent exhibition with its extraordinary display, but also to react to the museum’s extensive collection according to his own ideas.

Together with Kunsthaus Graz, steirischer herbst once again initiates the “Big Draw” in Graz, this time themed around the idea that “every drawing tells a story”. People of all ages are invited to take part in the “zoom in – zoom out” project at the festival centre: based on a set motif, each drawing or sketch takes off from an existing one, thus becoming part of an expansive network-style visual history. In keeping with the leitmotif, drawn legacies thus stimulate the imagination, that is then manifested on paper, continuing the storytelling outside the limits of time or space.

The “Close Link” exhibition project by hoelb/hoeb at steirischer herbst 2013 revealed the following: the current call for inclusion results not from the axioms of modern social policy or the demands of one’s own conscience, but from the very loneliness that is imposed on us – at moments when communication is interrupted or when the perspective shifts, when we want to be perceived as being excluded. This is the “uncanny” aspect (in Freud’s sense of the word) with which Barbara Hölbling and Mario Höber’s exhibition work confronts us: in the encounter with the lack of language, disease and lameness, we experience our own vulnerability, lack of language and immobility, and a mortality that can also unite us. The “Close Link” project has now given rise to a publication that will be presented at the festival centre.

“herbst Fragments” is an Android and iPhone app that not only gives users access to more than 100 interview excerpts but also to original audio recordings concerning projects in public space that have been carried out since the foundation of steirischer herbst in Graz in 1967. The app, controlled by GPS, updates and extends the “Fortysomething” project originally devised to mark the fortieth anniversary of the festival in 2007.

Walking around the city, it is now possible to listen to voices from the past. At one corner the app tells of a woman walking down the road covered in a sticky mess of human hair and honey. The artist collective Fourdummies travels the land in the herbst vehicle, collecting and recording future visions of local residents and festival visitors in Graz, Leoben and Vordernberg; to be stored in a time capsule for twenty years.

In a seemingly anarchic manner, Fourdummies tackles the big questions of the future: what remains, what comes and what disappears? To counter vague conjecture with something substantial, the collective is joining forces with local residents and festival visitors in Graz in the first phase of the project to develop visions and scenarios based on fears of the future and wishful notions. In the form of a photofuture montage, they are then visualised in a makeshift photo studio, allowing us to guess at the future through auspicious images. With the aid of the herbst vehicle, designed by British artist Luke Morgan, Fourdummies manoeuvres through time, space and Upper Styria, and only after each prophesy has been translated into images will the second phase of the project begin: in a ceremonial procession, the predictions will be welded into time capsules and buried in Leoben and Vordernberg. In “7 Pleasures” by the Danish choreographer and dancer Mette Ingvartsen the audience can experience at first hand how notions of nudity and sexuality have changed over time. The idea of exploring the body – one’s own, but also someone else’s – runs like a thread through the internationally acclaimed works of Mette Ingvartsen. The political aspect of the body is always a focal point, how it is perceived and its function as a statement in itself. The focus of her latest work “7 Pleasures”, which is set to premiere at steirischer herbst, relates to different aspects of pleasure, hedonism and sensuality. As a stage collective, twelve performers execute a long, expansive movement in seven stages. They feel their way towards other bodies, their skin, testing their boundaries, engaging in unexpected constellations, and also exploring the question: how can we use the joyful potential of pleasure to disrupt images attached to nudity and sexuality? When Ingvartsen, who staged “evaporated landscapes” and “Giant City” at steirischer herbst in 2009, ventures into the sometimes uncanny realm of pleasure, it is not just about giving free rein to sensations in their search for expression. The subject also raises a number of pressing and ultimately political issues: how to celebrate other forms of pleasure than those offered by everyday life, social conventions and the norms of politically correct gender relations?

Equipped with two headphones and two MP3 players two people sit down at a table with props and perform a play that they don’t know, but that seems strangely familiar to them. The players become part of a production that sometimes triggers memories of scenes from film or theatre. But “Etiquette” is a performance created for and with two visitors alone. Guided by directions through their headphones, they embody a strangely fragmentary story. But is this really just a story? Does the other person hear something completely different? Why the serious looks, the sudden laughs?

Rimini Protokoll picks up the thread of Adolf Hitler’s inflammatory pamphlet, trying to discover the reason for the mythical aura surrounding “Mein Kampf”. “Mein Kampf” by Adolf Hitler was first published in 1925/26 and had sold millions by the end of World War II. The aura of the “forbidden book” has clung to this propaganda publication for decades, causing it to exert a certain appeal even today. The copyrights managed by the Free State of Bavaria expire at the end of 2015. The debate about whether and in what form the book may be republished is already in full swing – although it is available from antiquarian bookshops and online in Austria, and indeed enjoys steady sales in many countries. What does the symbolic ban prevent? And what is really behind the mythical aura of “Mein Kampf”? What does it actually say? Does it pose a risk? In their latest production, theatre makers Helgard Haug and Daniel Wetzel set out in search of answers to these questions – in university poison cabinets, in domestic attics, or at foreign flea markets they have picked up the trace of a book that has lost none of its explosive historical and political force even today. Haug and Wetzel work under the Rimini Protokoll label in various constellations and are counted as among the most renowned theatre makers in the German-speaking world. Their works are based on extensive research and rehearsal work with experts, who will also be on stage in this project. The overall work of Rimini Protokoll was awarded the Silver Lion at the 2011 Venice Theatre Biennale.

The Rabtaldirndln lace up their football boots, put on shin pads and break out of the comfort zone with brute feminist force. The Rabtaldirndln come from the Rabtal, an imaginary region of Styria. The five-strong theatre collective with rural roots however, always seeks contact with the city. It doesn’t always end well – but they don’t allow themselves to become disillusioned. The setting of “Luise 37” is a prosperous locality in the immediate surroundings of Graz, in the affluent suburbs, where many young families have fulfilled their dream of owning their own home or of living in a smart residential estate – motorway connection and commuter allowance included. Luise and her husband have their own home there, too. The rural idyll near the city is not as dreamy as it appears at first sight – he commutes to the city every day, she works part-time and deals with the kids in the afternoons: baby yoga, music school, ballet and ... football. The Rabtaldirndln don their shin pads and structure their performance as a football training session: “Get out of your comfort zone!” they yell with brute feminist force as they make for the goal. “Take your life back into your own hands and don’t define yourself through your children!” While the kids are training on the football pitch, Luise takes care of the shopping and housework – and life passes her by like the commuters on the highway.

In his “Act to Forget”, the young Fleming Tom Struyf finds an old photo in a drawer. The only thing is, he cannot remember the occasion or the people standing next to him in the photo. He sees himself in a suit standing next to a woman in a wedding dress. Did he get married? Because he has absolutely no recollection, he wants to find out why his brain’s capacity to remember is letting him down so badly – moreover this is not the first time that his memory has failed. In conversations with a neurosurgeon, a past-life regression therapist, a philosopher, a psychologist, a Tai Chi teacher, and his own grandmother he tries to get to the bottom of it. Only when he is high up in the Swiss mountains it finally dawns on him why he is so forgetful.

A dark secret casts a shadow over Vordernberg. In an adventure game, the aim is to bring to light the mystery of its lost daughter. Vordernberg is a little village with a big history, but also any number of little histories. One day a rumour begins to spread: Eleonore is coming back. It is a long time ago that Eleonore Nesterval was last here. Even if the locals have chosen to forget, things happened back then that Eleonore’s return is bringing back to the present. The village and, above all, the participants in the interactive performance adventure find themselves confronted with a dark secret from the past. There’s a debt to pay and Eleonore Nesterval wants revenge. In a world between fiction and reality, with curious characters and extraordinarily ordinary settings, the visitors experience the cracked idyll of this once so wealthy place. They become adventurers, embarking on a roughly three-hour chase to unravel the mystery of the village’s lost daughter. The Austrian performance and game concept “Nesterval – An Adventure in the City” allows visitors to experience public space and hidden sites, thus enabling a new view of a familiar setting. In an interplay of performance, social interaction and classical methods of play, participants are immersed in the social and cultural everyday life of the village, becoming protagonists of their own adventure.

The Raithaus in Vordernberg was built in 1840 to house the newly founded Montanuniversität. Just a few years after opening, however, the university was enlarged and relocated to Leoben. The impressive building in Vordernberg and the adjoining garden remained – and still exist today. The young German artist Anna Peschke focuses on this place not by way of its widely recounted history, but by way of its emptiness. On the first floor of the building – that affords a wonderful view of the garden – she creates “Ophiopogon”, a little universe with its own rules and laws that invites visitors to stay a while, to lie down on beds of grass, or to slow down the pace of life whilst leafing through herbaria. It is a berylgreen internal world full of plants and grasses, a wistful and out of this world place.

Graz-based Theater im Bahnhof tells the story of a community in which a detention centre and a distillery change the lives of the inhabitants. A hundred years ago, a flat in the Upper Styrian municipality of Vordernberg was more expensive than on Vienna’s Ringstraße. As recently as seventy years ago, the municipality was one of Austria’s wealthiest. Today, postindustrial Vordernberg has been hit by migration. But there are people who oppose the forecast demise. In this valley, in which the sun only ever shines briefly, lies the most beautiful prison ever built. The new Anhaltezentrum (detention centre) stands as a symbol of departure into a promising future. It is good for the detainees, the security personnel, the private sector, and tax revenue. In fact, this prison isn’t a prison at all, but merely a place of transit where people wait to be released into a new life. Can’t Austria be better for once than the industrious Scandinavian countries that usually have the most beautiful showcase projects? In the light of this prison, Theater im Bahnhof tells a story of entrepreneurship in its most original form. Someone comes to the municipality and starts up an illicit distillery, the 500 euro settlement incentive is the starting capital. Business is soon booming, after all the schnapps is delicious – and gradually love and admiration begin to grow for the place and the personal stories of its residents.

A new era has dawned in the work of the Nature Theater of Oklahoma: although the New York Off-Off-Broadway company headed by Kelly Copper and Pavol Liska are present at this unique gala evening, the focus is on three film premieres. It all began on stage, with the life story of one of the company’s members, Kristin Worrall, transcribed from a sixteen-hour phone conversation which served as the foundation. We can now look forward to an evening, a grand narrative, a company, and three very different films. Some with a local reference even – Episode 9 is a zany gangsta rap video shot on roller-skates at last year’s steirischer herbst in Graz. But before we get there, Episode 7 has to take its course: the company works within the conventions of old blackand-white Hollywood films, paying formal obeisance to Orson Welles’ film classic “Citizen Kane” as they restage the recorded life story in a completely different way – with nine actors playing the parts of more than one hundred characters. This episode also gives a newsreel-style recap of events so far. Episode 8 is a visually impressive flick in the style of an early Cinemascope colour movie shot in the area around NYC and the Hudson River Valley. Sung throughout, the film once more develops new perspectives of Kristin’s life story. The whole thing comes to an equally unusual close – with Episode 9 condensing five years in the life of the protagonist into just seventeen minutes in the style of a rap video.

The film “The Sound of Music” is a source of inspiration for the Styrian-international artist formation The Loose Collective to reflect on national identity and belonging.

When it comes to safeguarding international competitiveness, agencies are commissioned today to develop a marketable image for a country and its people. The so-called process of nation branding attempts to cram it all into an identity habitat devised on the drawing-board. “The Sound of Music” counts among the most successful films in cinema history. For the past fifty years, the story of the Trapp family has unintentionally been contributing to Austria’s worldwide nation branding. With numerous references to the Austrian and German Heimatfilm, this US American musical film has propagated romantic notions of Austria, presenting green mountain pastures, aristocratic architecture and charming children making music under the guidance of a singing nun. Largely unknown in Austria, “The Sound of Music” transports a kitschy and easily recognisable image of the country to the world. Against this backdrop of ideas, The Loose Collective assumes a postnational stance, throwing together text samples, choreographies, technicolor images, songs and souvenirs to create a complex patchwork piece. Caught in the treacherous chasm between representation and selfperception, the fundamental question that arises is: what is a nation anyway? And why should we accept an artificial, arbitrarily imposed identity when we find it embarrassing or alienating?

What happens when we suddenly get torn out of the here and now and have to face something that happened long ago? “Cuando vuelva a casa voy a ser otro” is a piece by the superb story-teller Mariano Pensotti about people haunted by the past, forced to realise that they have become someone different over the course of time. The whole thing is based on a true story: an Argentinian revolutionary who buried incriminating objects at the end of the 70s. After the end of the military dictatorship, he can no longer find them, and they only reappear unexpectedly years later, confronting the one-time revolutionary with his past. Against this backdrop, Pensotti connects three illustrious biographies – a former theatre director tries to restage his only successful play, a political campaign adds a twist to the life of a musician and an unsuccessful politician reinvents himself. To stage these identity crises Pensotti deploys narrative techniques of cinema alongside an unusual stage structure. The Argentinian staged Johannes Schrettle’s short play “no one’s colleague” at steirischer herbst in 2008, in 2010 he premiered the “Encyclopedia of unlived life”. An insider’s tip back then, today he is internationally sought after. This year, for the first time, he brings his own new play to Graz with the actors of the Grupo Marea.

The story should be familiar: in “Back to the Future Part II”, teenager Marty McFly travels into the future, ending up in the year 2015, where he not only comes across holograms, flying skateboards and his thirty-year-older self, even Hill Valley looks completely different as well. While the real 2015 is not quite as futuristic, cities have still changed dramatically. Some districts have been impoverished, others greatly enhanced as a result of gentrification – first come artists and studios, then students and feel-good cafés and finally high-earners and boutiques. A process that takes place in ever shorter periods of time.

When it gets dark, the store also offers time travel – like McFly, visitors can nip off into the past or into the future, as they choose: to prevent certain things from happening – or to make them happen. What do we have to change in the past or bring back to the present from the future to stop things from being the way they are? How would you change the district that is home to the concept store? What kind of city do we want anyway? And what will never change, no matter what we do?

How can you put a sound archive on stage? Joris Lacoste began by sifting through his extensive audio collection for interesting material: news items, interviews, sound poems, sports news and political speeches. He then proceeded to process these items not only by playing with language, but also musically and rhythmically – finally creating “Suite n°2”, a kind of theatre for listening. The Encyclopédie de la parole group founded by the French theatre-maker Joris Lacoste, a collective of artists from different genres, commenced the ambitious cycle of “Suites Chorales” in 2013 with the aim of exploring language and, at the same time, of translating it into music. Whereas Suite n°1 – “ABC” – was a choral oeuvre dealing with speech as such, be it political or literary, in “Suite n°2” five performers make up a virtuoso polyphonic choir to present forms of expressing language in the form of chamber music. The focus is on speeches that can be considered as acts. Words that invoke, promise, declare or poison love, that may even spark off wars and be deadly. In collaboration with the composer Pierre-Yves Macé, Joris Lacoste creates a polyphonic text consisting of more than fifteen languages, a text that you may not always understand, but that is incredibly entertaining and allows us to hear language in totally new ways.

With a mischievous lecture performance, the Icelandic Kriðpleir Theatre Group reveals astonishing insights into the control mechanisms of the human brain. Imagine strolling around with no particular goal. You suddenly find yourself in a shopping centre. Was that really your intention? And then there you are at the checkout with a piece of cake. And you weren’t even thinking of sweets. It’s all Tiny Guy’s fault. While you are still lost in thought, he has already forced you to pull out your credit card and pay. Who is he? With a humorous lecture performance oscillating between anarchy, sitcom and Samuel Beckett, the versatile Icelandic theatre-maker Friðgeir Einarsson and his fellow performers set out to unearth the drive of human action. For Tiny Guy is our true master and a synonym for the extremely complex system controlling the brain and the unconscious. Now it’s time to reveal the truth about him. Following in-depth research into the human brain, Einarsson has arrived at the conclusion that humanity is only being battered by global warming and wars because they have nothing to resist Tiny Guy with. Einarsson and his Kriðpleir Theatre Group founded in 2012 have staged three productions so far and now set out to educate people at steirischer herbst as to how our brain really works and how we can regain control over our thoughts and wishes.

Belgian Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker is one of the most influential choreographers of our time. Brian Eno and William Shakespeare have now inspired her to explore the phenomenon of transience. In the thirty-five years of her work, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker has constantly embarked on new avenues with her Rosas company, setting out to create a high-tension relationship between dance and music. Her choice of music is as precise as it is varied – ranging from early Ars subtilior music, as in “Cesena” which opened steirischer herbst 2011, to works dealings with icons of pop music. In her new piece, “Golden Hours (As you like it)”, she sets out in search of the elusory phenomenon of time and transience. Her inspiration was a song by Brian Eno, pioneer of ambient music. “Golden Hours” opens with the words “The Passage of Time”, a central song from the album “Another Green World” (1975), Eno’s last rock record before setting out for new horizons. This and other songs run like a thread through Keersmaeker’s wondrously iridescent, ironically and gently ruptured world dominated by intensity and sensuousness. Another source of inspiration is William Shakespeare’s fairy-tale comedy “As You Like It”, in which two lovers flee court intrigue to the golden world of the Forest of Arden. De Keersmaeker translates the English poet’s linguistic rhythm and poetical imagery into dance and motion. Eleven young dancers walk the thin line between formal abstraction and concrete gesture in the setting of an enchanted world, brought back to the here and now by Eno’s songs, in search of the time of golden hours.

Investigations of the traces of cultural and economical exchange between China and Africa, in which Europe long ago ceased to be actively involved. Economic and political relations between the People’s Republic of China and numerous countries on the African continent have intensified greatly over the past two decades. The economic and geopolitical consequences of this development have been a topic of international discussion for some time. However, the cultural concomitants have been largely ignored. The curators and theorists Christian Hanussek and Jochen Becker have joined the experimental film-maker Daniel Kötter, whose work “Kredit” premiered at steirischer herbst in 2013, to visit cultural transfer sites between China and Africa to conduct field research.

In their show they present initial research findings, theories, anecdotes and video works from Lubumbashi or Lagos, examining “Chinafrican” activity in the Copper Belt, in the frontier region of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo and reporting on the markets of Hong Kong or around Johannesburg. The view of Chinese miners in Chingola or African street food vendors on Baohan Zhijie, the “African Street” in Guangzhou, round off the survey of a global process that will also fundamentally change the cultural imagination of Europe.

We are surrounded by testimonies of the past. Against the foil of these legacies, the herbst exhibition drafts an archaeology of the future. Buried deep in the ground, nuclear waste will remain radioactive for thousands of years to come. Will future generations recognise today’s nuclear waste disposal sites for what they are? What materials and messages could survive even if exposed to changing times and the evolution of life? Today testimonies of the past often pose conundrums, with natural and man-made objects accruing meaning which is both evidenced and imagined, that reflects the changing knowledge and ideologies of human populations. “Hall of Half-Life” confronts us with an evolution of forms, meaning and language, presenting artworks in the maelstrom of a changing current of planetary and geological impact, whose force can only be imagined in the nascent Anthropocene age. The majority of the works on show were specially commissioned, with the artists digging for the bones of the past, envisioning the erstwhile coral reefs on which modern-day Graz stands, listening to the stories linked to supposedly banal everyday objects, or inspecting ancient relics and even bog bodies. “Hall of Half-Life” explores the terrain of those marks, carriers of meaning, monuments, ruins and wastelands that can be seen as inscriptions of the modern age.

Great protests write history. But politics happens in personal conversations or discussions, too. How can we preserve the immediacy of such events? The focus of “Speech Acts” is not on the mass democratic phenomena of recent years, for instance political protests or revolutionary speeches. Instead, it is on personal conversations and interviews in which a political stance is manifested. The artistic contributions reflect speaking and listening, encounter and perception – the aim is to make legible the immediacy of political thought and action, that is not always readily apparent. The exhibition takes off from Hannah Arendt’s paradigm of “action” as one of three basic human activities. Unlike “work” and “fabrication”, Arendt sees “action” as interaction that directs individual coexistence so as to reveal the uniqueness, difference and plurality of human beings. Action is thus constitutive of the political, essentially consisting of speaking, communicating and exchanging information. For Arendt, “finding the right word at the right moment” is in itself action. What strategies of artistic translation can make such actions and the immediacy of language tangible without following conventional documentarisms or hegemonic historiography?

To mark the upcoming tenth anniversary of the death of Jörg Schlick (1951–2005) Künstlerhaus focuses on his overwhelming amount of work. Schlick was one of the most prolific Styrian artists of international standing. He was an author, conceptual artist, musician, painter, short-film director, video and performance artist, ballet choreographer, and set designer. He engaged in his intelligent play with all forms of artistic expression with the media resources available to him at the time and a marked creative instinct for potentials of appropriation and controversies.

As part of the accompanying programme of events, not only will companions and contemporaries be speaking, but members of the younger generation will also reflect on the life and work of Jörg Schlick.

Our society produces vast quantities of data, that we can archive neither completely, nor permanently. Nevertheless, we are constantly feeding more and more information into ever new bodies of data. In fact, innumerable IT centres are also constantly adding to CO2 emissions. One trait of current culture will not escape the notice of future researchers – information fetishism. Grazer and Salzburger Kunstverein have invited AA Bronson (born 1946, Vancouver) to develop a major project at both institutions at the same time. The aim is to rediscover and link alternative, avant-garde art practices – for instance occult or queer spiritualism – in the context of contemporary art. AA Bronson is often regarded as the godfather of an art practice in which the focus is on the significance of the collective. As a founder (and only surviving) member of the General Idea group (1967–1994), his art was for a long time dominated by political topics such as gay rights or AIDS. He has always attached great importance to working not only in the collective, but also with artists from a wide range of disciplines. Bronson recently introduced spiritual practice as a key factor into his work. At this show he assumes the role of shaman, working together with young, above all queer artists, thinkers and performers on an extensive performance and representation of his hybrid art practice between spiritualism and communal practices.

Rarely before has it been so hard to discuss religion. What is the situation in terms of how we deal with the legacy of a visual culture defined by Christianity? What remains of the religious world of images that for centuries dominated Europe? For a long time, relics of this legacy were found above all in contexts of pop culture, very much though in the field of music. Meanwhile the subject of Christian iconography and motifs is regarded as passé, outgrown or – beyond ironical treatment – at least as impossible to lend form to. It would seem that no serious discussion takes place outside of the academic or theological world. The public sphere tends to dodge the subject of religion, narrowing it down to fundamentalism, at best drawing on the general concept of spirituality or even pushing this legacy on to the sidelines of history. Yet different and new forms of artistic analysis of this rich bedrock have once again begun to emerge in recent years. The question is thus what motivates these artists to re-examine these relics from the basement of history. In the “Reliqte, Reloaded” exhibition, Kulturzentrum bei den Minoriten joins QL-Galerie to examine this phenomenon, asking about the failure to enrich the current debate on religion with the relics, traces and legacies of European, Christian culture.

Austrian artist Maria Anwander intervenes in art history with the aim of bringing about a feminist redistribution of attention, success and fame. In her works, Maria Anwander often takes a feminist view of art history, investigating its protagonists and the unequal distribution of attention, success and fame. For centuries men have dominated the art world and its perception, while female artists feature only rarely or as minor figures. A fact that persists to this day – with female artists still underrepresented in major museums and exhibitions. Exhibition activities and the art market are still defined by male actors resolutely defending their province. This is the starting point for Anwander’s work, commenting ironically on the art industry, above all with regard to the situation of her female colleagues. Unashamedly, she adapts the legacy of world-famous artists so as to place it in a new, feminist context. Not without humour, she thus intervenes in art history, eliminating virile aspects in order to make room for a future generation of female artists.

In times of neoliberal urban development, the question that arises is: when and where is time and space in public space for play – and for whom? In addition to living and working, the modern division of space comprised equally of leisure – accordingly, spaces for play were planned in a functionalist, rationalising form. To this day, fenced-in playgrounds, sports cages and decentralised leisure areas are part of the cultural heritage of Fordist, modernist urban planning, while the welfare state’s promise of the post-war period is gradually disappearing. Starting out from the concept of play, “Free Play” comes to focus on urban playing spaces for old and young, public spaces and pieces of fallow land that have survived – international and historical scenes, from Aldo van Eyck’s Amsterdam to current-day Graz. The exhibition looks into rules and norms, discussing the question of how we can fulfil the demand for a right to play in the city of the future. Various interventions in urban space and an archive will be carried out. The show also critically examines the disappearance of small spaces of play in the city as collateral damage of the big game of the city in times of neoliberal urban development.

To explore which forms of postnational belonging are possible, the artists reflect on sociocultural, political and above all historical changes of paradigm from the recent past. The show thus negotiates historically evolved awareness in different countries, exercising criticism of the predominant understanding of the respective political and economic developments. The different experiences of the self, based on these developments, is analysed in “To What End?”. The artists refer to incisive political and social events in their countries and their effects on current living conditions. The show also examines the diversity and marginalisation of social groups, as a result producing not only critical statements about the past, present and future, but also new intellectual approaches regarding historical and current conditions.

“Corporate” is the first personal show of the Chinese artist Xu Zhen in Austria. An exhibition on cultural identity in a society that is becoming more and more alike the world over and increasingly driven by market economy forces.

Xu Zhen is known for his genre-bending works between conceptual art discourse, politics and frivolous pop culture. At the 2001 Venice Biennale the Chinese artist caused an international stir with a self-destructive film work. For his sculptures, films, performances and images, he works in the manner of a DJ, blending and copying set pieces from culture with supreme technical precision. He draws on art theory discourses along with the perversions of consumeroriented society. His modus operandi is based on the rules of conceptual art, interlaced with theatrical humour, and is, in the broader sense, performative – with social criticism being neither obviously serious, nor ironical.

[That’s Not My History!] G Visual arts V Graz

Historiography is a matter of negotiation, with nationalism or imperialism all too often gaining the upper hand. An exhibition about alternative drafts. The interpretation of historical events is subject to constant change. The way we assess and estimate the past is above all the result of political and social conditions. The change of regimes can lead to a totally different understanding – or even a completely new definition – of history. Accordingly, like all social agreements, history is a construction that is subject to constant renegotiation and passing down. The artists critically scrutinise this legacy, unwilling to blindly perpetuate what would seem to be firmly established: “That’s Not My History!” What was formulated in certain circumstances in the past is now being reformulated so as to enable future generations a new interpretation. The works demonstrate that their authors are in opposition to those historiographies defined by nationalism, imperialism, xenophobia or sexism. Here, artists become a civil movement engaged in resistance by means of art.

The Australian artist Mikala Dwyer digs her way through the mining legacy of Vordernberg and the current detention centre to create a temporary place of pilgrimage.

Mikala Dwyer’s artistic practice is defined not only by a belief in the power of objects, but also by the conviction that there is a significant relationship of interdependence between matter and energy. While the artist has explored the mineral collection of Graz’s Natural History Museum for her contribution to the herbst exhibition at the GrazMuseum, for the piece developed for Vordernberg, “Saint Jude’s Leftovers”, she works with material found on-site – molten leftovers from a time in which mining was an active industry – thus building a bridge from the past to the present. Radwerk III (a water-wheel furnace), reminiscent of the municipality’s industrial heritage, with its solidified pig-iron remains, is both the abandoned remains of a once-glorious industry, and a monument to it. For the town’s new industry, a centre in which people awaiting forced deportation from Austria are housed, Dwyer is adapting the monument in the name of Saint Jude Thaddaeus, the patron saint of desperate and lost causes. Radwerk III will honour the relics of the mining era, while also listening to those voices that are otherwise never heard: Dwyer aims to depict messages from those people awaiting deportation – turning the Vordernberg installation into an antenna for the messages to Saint Jude.

Curated by Tessa Giblin (IE/NZ) For the Porubsky Halle in Leoben, Ulla von Brandenburg creates an art work entitled “Wolken lösen sich in Wasser” – a sculpture, platform, stage, and exhibition in one. The German artist thus creates a place of many different forms that is to be seen as a stand-alone work and also as forging a link to the herbst exhibition “Hall of Half-Life” at the festival centre in Graz, integrating artworks from this show into the multifunctional setting. By dissolving imaginary borders between theatre and exhibition space, she creates an environment that visitors can use as an unusual stage and make their own. During the festival, the installation will be a scene for numerous events that are on the one hand linked with the programme of steirischer herbst and, on the other, with the redesign of the Porubsky Halle. The inhabitants of Leoben and a number of initiatives are invited to use “Wolken lösen sich in Wasser” as a think-tank, laboratory or stage. The artwork and the former factory thus become a meeting place where performances, symposia and discussions are held, where lectures, concerts, film screenings, a swapmeet, and a poetry slam take place. Welcome to a place that is constantly changing!

What crude oil was for the 20th century, the information commodity is for the 21st – one of the most important and therefore globally contested products. Of particular interest in connection with this is the change of paradigm that takes place when a limited resource has to make way for one which is almost unlimited, one which is founded upon a historical legacy and is constantly becoming more extensive and complex. State-owned television and radio is a major administrator, filter and producer in this context.

In the course of the project, ORF staff were asked to write down something as yet unsaid, something kept secret – thoughts, messages, information, perhaps even secrets. Werner Reiterer writes the anonymised text material on the walls of the Funkhausgalerie with a special substance. This “ink”, however, is just like the real information itself – it is completely invisible to the human eye. While it is usually the media who bring information into the world, in “Off the Records” this is the task of the visitor. With blacklight lamps, the invisible texts can be translated into a wavelength visible to the human eye.

Artist Anita Witek draws on the visual subjects of advertising and magazines to create three-dimensional collages with the image fragments found. The material with which artist Anita Witek creates her three-dimensional collages consists of items found in magazines, current and old books, and on advertising posters. Detached from their original context, she reproduces individual elements by means of photography and printing, adjusting the proportions in keeping with the new concept and arranging them in different constellations. The result is simulated spaces, installations and images of space that restage the interaction of the human being and the object in the field of photography. In the words of philosopher Jean Baudrillard one might say that this gives rise to “simulacra”, that is to say, images between reality and fiction. For “Es ist so, wie es scheint”, the artist draws on current concepts of urban planning in Graz and on the immediate vicinity of Kunsthalle Graz. Image fragments and subjects taken from the mass media are pieced together to create a polyfocal, three-dimensional collage, thus creating a space within a space with local references.

More than one year ago, the Schaumbad communal studio moved into an old industrial building in Graz’s Triester district – on the edge of town with a minor attractive neighbourhood: abattoir, refuse disposal site, prison, shabby estates. To find their own role in this spatially, economically and socially exposed setting, the members of the studio centre began to map the area and to embed it in projects with a local reference. This process of appropriation is to be continued at steirischer herbst – the aim of “Heritage” is to illuminate the process of inheritance, that is the discovery and acceptance of legacies. The project will be carried out in the form of research and interpretation, with a self-critical stance and the aim of (re)inventing origin, identity and property. The project combines several separate contributions in an “archive of fictional realities” of the Triester district. It forms the core, basis and background of an exhibition, guided tours, readings, short lectures, and scenographic miniatures, all coordinated with the motifs of the exhibitions. Imagine a convention of The Gay Science.

The fact that we only conceive of the future as a dystopia is because we see tomorrow as an extension of today. However, the future can be completely different. “Future Perfect” sets out to imagine this difference. Not by demanding disruption and constant (self-)reinvention, but by looking at the totality of relationships in which we find ourselves. Contrary to the capitalist assertion, not all destruction is in fact creative. Sometimes something is simply gone – resources, life-forms, options for the future.

The exhibition “To What End?” investigates the idea of “inheritance” as a device for reclaiming historical memories so as to enable criticism of dominant narratives and cultural ideas. How can we understand the concept of “inheritance” when it is a matter of making a wide range of voices heard, all reflecting different cultural contexts? What potential lies in post national forms of belonging that run counter to widely accepted strategies of globalisation? And how are current political and social changes manifested in the creative world, how can we integrate them into the spheres of art? In artist talks, discussions and a film programme, the aim is to widen the range of topics connected with social, political and economic codes by means of experimental research.

Modern-day Europe, that we prefer to see as having been born of the spirit of the French Revolution, came into being in 1950 as a coal and steel union: if you work together, you don’t fight against each other. So the birth of the European Union was induced by economic concerns and a desire for security. Internal borders were abolished for the movement of goods, external borders closed. Is Europe a community of values, and, if so, which values are involved? To whom do they apply? And what kind of role does common cultural heritage play, what role the EU Frontex agency? Director Hans-Werner Kroesinger and dramaturg / documentary film maker Regine Dura examine Europe with the aid of documents. In this workshop, a document is everything that the participants regard as relevant in this context, be it political, philosophical or personal. Material for a later presentation will be developed from the pool of resources.

Lara Almarcegui (NL/ES) Mineral Rights In her work, Lara Almarcegui often explores wastelands or unheeded places. In order to deepen her investigation of land – as a symbol of the past and a source of “building” – she now turns her attention to what lies below: “Mineral Rights: Acquisition of the mineral rights of an iron deposit” is an ongoing project in several countries in which Almarcegui tries to purchase land, not to extract minerals but to highlight how the territory is shaped at a geological level, and how it is broken down for exploitation. Looking back on the long history of mining and land ownership, the workshop investigates how rulers of different countries oppose the idea that individual citizens acquire rights to mineral resources. The workshop will also analyse the situation around Graz in depth. Various forms of landscape representation are investigated alongside this process.

Daniel Wetzel / Rimini Protokoll (DE) Places of Overwriting In the performances of the Rimini Protokoll theatre collective, the act of remembering, generally a way of preventing something from being forgotten, is made visible as an act of overwriting and, above all, inscribing – personal, political and social pasts into the present. For “Adolf Hitler: Mein Kampf, Band 1 & 2”, co-produced by steirischer herbst, it is once again the expertise and experiences of the protagonists with the propaganda publication that constitute the central material, ninety years after publication of the book. The incomplete search for traces turns the stage into a field of play between fact and fiction. In other projects, the company uses specific sites – almost parasitically – as a stage on which to view the present. In “Hausbesuch Europa” (2015), for example, it is the audience’s living rooms. The workshop examines selected works of Rimini Protokoll with the aid of practical experimental set-ups.

Poverty is hereditary, it is female, it primarily affects older people and increasingly, working people. Poverty is expensive, it devours state budgets and undermines economic and social dynamics. It is not merely an individual fate that can be passed on to charity organisations, as crucial as their work may be. Article 34 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union states a basic right to social security and social assistance. Society and its state institutions are thus called upon to combat poverty. The aim of this interdisciplinary symposium is not only to give an overview of the manifestations of poverty, but also to deal with aspects of this subject in terms of basic rights and democracy – so as to initiate a wider discussion and, above all, to draw attention to the overall responsibility of society in combating poverty.

The “Retrokino” series is on the way to becoming a fixture in Leoben. In keeping with this year’s leitmotif, Andrei Tarkovsky’s Soviet science fiction classic “Solaris” (1972) is being screened. The film demonstrates the hubris of our traditional faith in progress. Then as now, the work requires a certain empathy, lacking as it does the narrative style of conventional cinema. The discussion following the screening illuminates future scenarios already visualised in the film medium and how they correspond with the present.

The video documentary “herbst remixed” accompanies the steirischer herbst festival, recording everything that happens. It documents what takes place, remixes what people see, focuses on what goes unobserved, and creates new links. It not only tells you what has been, but also what is to come. And what you’ve missed. It is a collection of pictures in progress, a mash-up, a collage. The result is a new experience of steirischer herbst every day afresh, on show at the festival centre, on the Net, and at various venues. Also, the “herbst remixed” TV edition stages selected herbst projects on ORF 2 (just before “Steiermark heute”) – a one-minute video experiment in this tightly packed TV advert slot.

They are diarists and writers-in-residence, minute-takers and observers. They note, sketch, photograph. They formulate passing thoughts – topical today and perhaps stale tomorrow. This year again, five authors and artists will keep a net diary for steirischer herbst: Icelandic performer Friðgeir Einarsson, exploring the foundations of human thought with “Tiny Guy”, Graz-based writer Christoph Dolgan and two Austrian architects Marleen Leitner and Michael Schitnig aka studio Asynchrome, and German artist Anna Peschke, who will enchant Vordernberg with the interactive installation “Ophiopogon”. They published their first notes in May, and will be adding to them continuously. When all of the authors are in Graz for one week each during the festival, their note-taking will be intensified – thus joining together to form a parallel prehistory and literary continuation of steirischer herbst.

Hurrah: the herbst magazine is celebrating an anniversary! As an accompaniment to the festival, it is being published this year for the tenth time. As always, it is not a programme booklet that sums up and explains specific works, exhibitions or projects. Instead, it sets out in search of a different kind of closeness – and finds it through its contributions written in some cases by authors who are taking part in the festival themselves. Through artist portraits and artistic contributions. Through theoretical comments dealing with the festival’s leitmotif, “Back to the Future”, from different angles. A regular poetry slam has become a firm fixture in Leoben and has already been staged in a wide range of different formats. At the Porubsky Halle, the local slammer scene spearheaded by local star Tschif Windisch comes up against some tough competition from beyond: at “Dead or Alive” local slam poets battle against established actors. As is the usual practice, the slammers will perform their own texts. The actors, in contrast, will line up with texts by deceased authors. At the end, the audience decides who is victorious – the living or the dead.

On two collection days swappers can bring along up to five items of clothing worth being worn by someone else. For each item that’s accepted, you get one stamp. Then, when the big swap party takes place, you can use your stamp card to buy new gear and maybe find out who in the future will be wearing the once favourite item from your own wardrobe.

Die Buben im Pelz With their new recording of The Velvet Underground’s legendary banana album “The Velvet Underground & Nico” Christian Fuchs and David Pfister, formerly of the now defunct band Neigungsgruppe Sex, Gewalt & Gute Laune, stay true to their former style. Although once again toying with pop and trash, the two musicians treat the original material with respect, mastering the almost absurd task of performing the songs of one of the most influential bands in pop history as Wienerlieder – from “Sunntag Morgn” to “Olle Faden Parties”. Is today’s Vienna yesterday’s New York? An illustrious host of guests is set to attend the premiere of this bold project in Graz, among them multi-instrumentalist Sir Tralala and drummer Ralph Wakolbinger.

Pollyester Four years after their debut album “Earthly Powers”, this theme is no longer the centre of attention for Munich-based band Pollyester. “City of O” is the follow-up, named after the mystical city Orion, a paleofuturistic installation of artist Hannsjörg Voth in the Moroccan desert. Pollyester have also been inspired by the vast expanse of outer space – in a breathtaking blend of styles with cosmic synthesizers and Dadaist inclusions the quartet headed by Minsk-born, Munich-based Polina Lapkovskaja merges funk with Italo pop and Krautrock with disco. The heavenly thing about it? Pollyester are eminently danceable too!

Their musical influences are many and diverse, the trio knows practically no boundaries of style and condenses the historical threads of soul, rap, dub, rave and R’n’B to create contemporary pop music – uncompromising and avant-garde, while also accessible. “White Men Are Black Men Too” is the title of their latest album, following the British Mercury Prize-winning “Dead”. The Young Fathers’ lyrics are smart, provocative and political and their live performances are more than energetic.

With a new name and a new member, Finnish percussionist Tatu Rönkkö, the quartet pulls off a coup, not picking up on their own legacy, but – following world tours and orchestra collaborations – returning to free form – improvisation and flirtations with the repetitive patterns of minimal music defining their sound. But the four Scandinavians don’t want to do without grand gestures altogether, evoking memories of Kraftwerk, Brian Eno or Talking Heads, i.e. of pop with intellect.

Lambert Lambert wears a striking wooden mask when he performs his original, minimalist piano pieces. He is a crossover artist between classical, jazz and pop, oscillating between Erik Satie and Keith Jarrett, and has also picked up the thread of contemporary pop musicians – he gives a new face to songs by José Gonzales, Tocotronic or Ja, Panik, while his own remains concealed, blurring the boundaries between author and interpreter.

Every one of her songs is a hit, her solemn voice is accompanied by cheap keyboards and inaccurate rhythm machines, modest and yet poignant. Although the title of her current album “Black Moon Days” makes reference to the dreamy melancholy of Nick Drake or Judee Sill, for example, Robertson’s songs are founded on an oppressive realism, far removed from chasing after some supposedly idyllic past.

“Nigredo is not for the faint of heart”, say some. “Nigredo is totally relaxing”, say others. Nigredo is the experience of changed self-perception for one visitor at a time by means of biophysical media, developed by Marco Donnarumma and Marije Baalman. Carefully but resolutely, they push visitors to their individual limits. Completely cut off from the hustle and bustle of the outside world, wired and connected up with all manner of sensors and technological devices, they become cyborgs for eight minutes, thrown back on bare humanity. Auditory, visual and tactile stimuli positioned immediately and with pinpoint precision are initiated by the pulsation of one’s own body in a biofeedback process, instinctively triggering emotions that can only be rationally classified with hindsight. Nigredo is equally reminiscent of our uniformity and uniqueness – for all the immediacy this self-experience trip, perceived now as too short, now as too long, may take us to the realm of both intellectual expanse and constraint.

He has the makings of an icon of free science, beyond academia and yet full of passionate precision: researcher of the Mediterranean, Ludwig Salvator travelled all his life, going from island to island, and finally from continent to continent. From aboard the “Nixe”, his steam-driven yacht, he set his research radar on unexplored, as yet largely unknown Mediterranean islands and their original, indeed – in terms of civilisation – primeval flora and fauna, habits, customs and living circumstances. For decades, he published dozens of highly regarded specialist publications. The Archduke from the Tuscan line of the Habsburg family, who died one hundred years ago in October 1915, was as much an ardent practising conservationist as a bohemian and pacifist. A homage featuring several artistic contributions from the fertile borderland of sound, art and science is dedicated to this free thinker. Venues and, at the same time, instruments of this undertaking are ORF correspondent booths in the Lesliehof im Joanneumsviertel and the Murinsel as the fictitiously resurrected research vessel Nixe – along with the appropriate background sound.

Reshaping Club Music is a concert evening in the dynamic context of the past and future, albeit immersed in an apocalyptic atmosphere. It is a postapocalyptic world that Stefan Senf aka Assimilation Process spans out with his performances, in which there are only occasional flashes of all-nighters on the dance floor. The music of Pasajera Oscura merges the equally dystopian soundscapes of Christina Nemec aka chra with the beat structures of Patricia Enigl aka irradiation founded on the laws of quantum physics. Once again, the apocalyptic atmosphere that now completely pervades space is passed on when Yair Elazar Glotman aka Ketev weaves his leaden post techno, before Lorenzo Senni catapults us back to the early, jaunty days of rave culture in one of his rare ATT (Advanced Abstract Trance) performances. The Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics IEM celebrates its fiftieth anniversary with tape-recorded music and sound transducers with pure music on the Schloßberg. Graz in 1965 – a city embarking on new departures in music. One of Europe’s first jazz institutes was founded at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts, as it was known back then. The same year saw the foundation of the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics, IEM for short, as part of today’s University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. For five decades, the IEM – engaging in an exchange with affiliated institutions the world over in terms of its staff and artistic undertakings – was and continues to be a fascinating laboratory at the cross- and interdisciplinary intersections of art and science, technology and musical practice, electronic music, acoustics, audio engineering, sound, and media art. The IEM celebrates its anniversary in the Schloßberg Kasematten with a series of “Vintage Concerts” and a vast line-up of speakers and vintage electronics. Legendary and extremely rare electroacoustic pieces from the 1970s to 1990s will be performed true to the original works with the aid of legacy equipment and prominent performers from back in the day. The historical performance practice with tape machines, electronics and absolute pure music with multichannel loudspeaker systems as a sound machine. Or: “Back to the Future” with tape and synthesizer.

musikprotokoll is not just a festival physically located in Graz, all concerts are also broadcast on Ö1, the internet, and by the European Broadcasting Union. musikprotokoll sends out waves. Not only in Graz, but also on the radio and the net. As such, musikprotokoll is very close in many different places – in our living rooms, cars and on our smartphones. It is inscribed in the festival’s founding DNA that it is produced by ORF and thus, that all concerts and performances are broadcast – either live or as recordings. Since 1968, this has given rise to a vast and wonderful archive of contemporary sound, a kind of representative cross-section of almost fifty years of avant-garde, a constant flow of new musical positions from the four corners of the earth. In 2015, concerts are again presented to a wide audience, also beyond the bounds of the musikprotokoll venues – on the radio, the internet and by the European Broadcasting Union. In addition to concert transmissions there are also several opportunities for festival visitors to attend Ö1 live broadcasts. “Ö1 Kulturjournal” and “Spielräume” on Friday and “Ö1 Klassiktreffpunkt” on Saturday – look forward to seeing you!

The best of two worlds: a critic from Berliner Zeitung raved about the “genuine beauty of pure sound” when the Austrian guitarist and electronic musician Christian Fennesz published his solo album “Black Sea” in 2008. Fennesz, an international star of his genre, whose music oscillates between experiment and pop, between atmospheric and lateral, transfers his musical work to a large classical symphony orchestra for the first time at musikprotokoll. Based on the tracks from the “Black Sea” album, he has created a piece for the RSO Vienna that transposes the atmospheric sound magic so typical of his world into the orchestral universe. A constellation that is as astonishing as it is unusual and, in fact, sensational. For one thing because one of Austria’s best orchestras will perform it – the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. A solo performance by Fennesz during this concert at the Helmut List Halle is also planned. The guest performance ends magnificently with the Austrian premiere of composer Jorge López’s “Symphonie fleuve”, with its vast orchestration. An evening between the elegiac sound-worlds of Christian Fennesz and the gigantic acoustic architectures of Jorge López.

Violist Petra Ackermann and pianist Philipp Meier formed a duo in Zürich in 2009 with the aim of expanding the modest repertoire for viola and piano. Meanwhile a number of new pieces have been written, including premieres of Klaus Lang, Germán Toro-Pérez, Christoph Herndler, Arturo Fuentes, Martin Jaggi, and others. Together with the composer Jorge Sánchez-Chiong they developed the multimedia project “jupiter.analogs II” in 2014. The outcome of this unique project? A new formation, a trio for contemporary music: viola, piano and turntables. Ackermann / Meier / Sánchez-Chiong present premieres of three composers with Latin American roots who have for some time provided important impetus in the local music scene: Arturo Corrales, Arturo Fuentes and Jorge SánchezChiong. All three composers take unconventional, refreshing approaches to the traditional string / piano duo formation, expanding it with the aid of turntables and electronics.

In terms of Planck’s quantum physics, the pianist and his black instrument act and function as an “ideal black body”: this is the basis of the concept for the composition “Radiazione di corpo nero” by Teresa Carrasco. In physics, this “black-body radiation” denotes a specific emitted spectrum of radiation. But in and with “Radiazione di corpo nero”, Teresa Carrasco doesn’t engage in physics, but music. “All frequency spectra of the piece”, she writes, in which she also includes the spatial distribution of sounds, “are influenced by the pianist’s temperature, position and movement and by the experimental work with the multiple possibilities of the grand piano as a resonant body.”

The work by Johannes Maria Staud is a composition commission of ensemble recherche and ORF musikprotokoll, supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

Pure curiosity is the trademark of the Freiburg-based ensemble recherche. It bills with a sextet of British grand seigneur Brian Ferneyhough and three premiere pieces. For thirty years now, selective sound research, persistent, focused investigation of ever new compositional modes of thought and structures, tracking down fascinating aspects – i.e. pure curiosity – has been the trademark of the Freiburg-based ensemble recherche. This year, the nine instrumental researchers visit Graz with an abundant mixture of different points of the compass and sound styles: with a powerful sextet of British grand seigneur Brian Ferneyhough and no fewer than three premiere pieces. Along with an ensemble piece by Johannes Maria Staud, fresh off the press, who is responsible for the musical opening of this year’s steirischer herbst, there will also be premieres of pieces by two young composers – Vienna-based Chinese musician Wen Liu and Berlin-based Serb musician Milica Djordjević.

“Scelsi, c’est moi” was the headline of the Italian music magazine Il Giornale della Musica in 1989, one year after the death of Giacinto Scelsi. The composer Viero Tossati, who created notations for Scelsi in the last years of his life, claimed that Scelsi’s compositions were in fact his. This sparked off a dispute about originality and authorship that enlivened the music world. Scelsi, who was for a long time little known to the general public, soon became an idol among insiders. The Italian ensemble of Ennio Morricone, the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, published an “Ommagio a Scelsi” as early as the 1970s. The members of the ensemble pondered the utopia of a spontaneous composition while engaged in experimental music making, paying tribute in their homage to the loner Scelsi and his musical output. These two historical events are based on Giacinto Scelsi’s very special way of moving into and within a sound, a note, of phrasing and shaping it. Even today, the “Improvisations” that Scelsi recorded on the ondiola exert a hypnotic fascination. Uli Fussenegger heard these old tapes in the archives of the Fondazione Isabella Scelsi in Rome and began carefully and respectfully approaching Scelsi’s world. Together with his fellow musicians he now finds contemporary paths through this enchanted forest of monotonous polyphony and polyphonic monotony.

The big effect of little unsettling moments: following this principle, Ulrich Troyer has always found many different ways of arriving at new acoustic formulations. Be it layerings of sounds conceived as sculptures, visuals for listening, dance rhythms for the brain, or surveys of space with acoustic equipment – Troyer likes to disturb the equilibrium of his listeners without actually putting them off balance.

He does so, as one critic says, “with a nimble hand and a light heart”. His “cinema for listening” and his abstraction of dance patterns have, it says, recently become even more intimately interwoven. However, his work can also be enjoyed at a much simpler level, with his music highly reminiscent of the legendary “Iaora Thahiti” album by the electronic band Mouse on Mars. And that is just plain good fun, “ça nous fait plaisir”, as one French critic enthused about Troyer. For the 2015 musikprotokoll, Ulrich Troyer works on more superimposing and layering of bass lines and bass frequencies, with the working title of his new piece carrying hints of geomorphology: “Dolomite Dub”.

Music, space, time, motion – the interplay of these elements has always held a special fascination for the cellist and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. For some time now she has been working together with instrument maker Hans Jóhannsson on developing a new instrument: Ómar is a kind of surround cello with integrated filter chip, without a body of its own but which can be connected to a wide range of sound-boxes. In Guðnadóttir’s music, the sound of Ómar, iridescent in ever changing colours, and her voice engage in an intense dialogue. The two clarinettists Kai Fagaschinski and Michael Thieke also conduct a musical colloquy when they present their jointly composed pieces. The vocabularies of two musician figures, each distinctively formulated, combine to form a common musical language that is as puristic as it is complex. The focus of Fagaschinski and Thieke’s research interest is on experimenting with multiphonics and microtonal structures – as with Hildur Guðnadóttir, the aim, then, is to work consciously with the movement of sound in space.

Following selected performances, we invite you – together with the steirischer herbst programming team and the artists – to discuss their work. For groups, if requested in good time, we can also organise special introductions to all stage productions.

Workshops

The aim of the steirischer herbst education programme is to create a relationship between artists and the audience by means of a highly varied programme and interdisciplinary formats. Widening the range of venues in Styria has also added an exciting programme rich in variety to the festival’s outreach activities, equally enabling us to address a broader public and reach new audience groups. In addition to creating a dialogue between you and the participating artists, curators and other people involved in the projects, we have also created a platform for any questions and feedback in the form of introductions, guided tours and discussion forums. Numerous workshops also offer opportunities for an active examination of the projects and productions billing at steirischer herbst. We invite school classes of all ages, all other students, clubs and companies to take part in cultural excursions and also provide assistance in creating a programme and organising meetings and discussions with artists and curators. We will do our best to fulfill your individual wishes. With the aid of our extensive education programme our aim is to cater for the special interests and needs of different visitor groups. Geschichte im Spiegel der Kunst In the journalistic writing workshop “Geschichte im Spiegel der Kunst” (History as reflected in art), Thomas Trenkler, cultural editor of the Kurier daily newspaper, joins sixth-form students to elaborate reports pertaining to the production “Adolf Hitler: Mein Kampf, Band 1 & 2” by Rimini Protokoll. ➜ 18 Spielimpulse In the “Spielimpulse” workshop led by the young choreographer Simon Mayer, groups can approach this year’s leitmotif in a physical, playful manner, examining the aesthetic devices of contemporary dance performances. Migration on Tour The travelling exhibition “Migration on Tour” of the Democracy Centre Vienna is a show designed for young people that deals with current questions connected with asylum, right of residence and integration policy. It is available for booking by educational and art institutions in the Leoben district through steirischer herbst and is intended to encourage a more in-depth analysis of the piece “Black Moonshine” by the Theater im Bahnhof company in Vordernberg. There will also be workshops on the exhibition, some with guided tours, for teachers and school-goers. ➜ 23 Spielraum Sat 17/10, 10.00 – 13.00 Porubsky Halle Leoben Guided by Spielwiese Leoben, the “Spielraum” workshop participants will engage in theatre-pedagogy games to examine questions of their own visions of the future, utopias, and perception of space and stage.

education Workshops Worte finden At the “Worte finden” writing workshop, Christoph Hartner, cultural editor of Krone Zeitung, discusses what linguistic devices can be used to critically reflect on the impressions and discoveries of a visit to the herbst exhibition. Spurensuche A playful exhibition walking tour for young visitor groups, the “Spurensuche” format sets out in search of answers to unusual questions, journeying to various festival venues around the city centre of Graz – honing visitors’ attention and perception and enabling not only artistic, but also local discoveries. Upcycling Workshop Fri 09/10 & Fri 16/10, 15.00 – 18.00 Porubsky Halle Leoben In the “Upcycling Workshop” by the Raum macht Schule association at the Porubsky Halle in Leoben, young people can join in to make and create new things from old, discarded material. The aim is to inspire young people to leave the familiar paths of our throwaway society and to conceive unusual object designs.

Workshops Media education seminar The media education seminar by Carsten Siehl, media educator and film scholar, accompanying the film programme includes a programme preview and makes suggestions about how the films can be prepared and followed up in schools. Die Kunst der Moderation In the workshop “Die Kunst der Moderation” FM4 film critic and curator Petra Erdmann joins young people to discuss dramaturgical techniques for hosting a film programme. The participants can present the results of the workshop by hosting one of the film presentations themselves, supervised by Petra Erdmann. dox & shorts – Festival films on tour in Styria “dox & shorts – Festival films on tour in Styria” is a hosted film education programme for young people that will screen in Styria beyond the end of the festival – in cooperation with doxs! and the Diagonale film festival. In special cinema shows, this is a media education programme for schools that discusses the content of the films and the film medium. Curated by Barbara Pichler and Gudrun Sommer With film presentations by Roman Fasching herbstlichtspiele The hosted “herbstlichtspiele” film programme presents short films based on an experimental modus operandi, enabling groups of all ages to engage in a critical examination of the omnipresent film medium.

Architecture We’ll be happy to organise discussions and tours of this year’s festival centre for all age groups and interests.

Interdisciplinary Schlagzeilen machen The workshop “Schlagzeilen machen” is a fascinating format for an adult audience, eighteen up: headed by Evelyn Schalk, journalist and publisher of Grazer Wandzeitung ausreißer, the aim is to create a dedicated publication – the theme of which is linked to the steirischer herbst programme – with participants taking active part with their own contributions. Langer Tag der Flucht Taking off from the “Langer Tag der Flucht” (Long Day of Flight) – initiated by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees – steirischer herbst in cooperation with the association OMEGA – Transkulturelles Zentrum für psychische und physische Gesundheit und Integration is offering a special programme intended to examine the topic of refugees in an artistic manner.
