Wir schaffen das.

[We can do this.] – On the Shifting of Cultural Cartographies

It’s no surprise that one issue dominates discussions this year, also in art, one which preoccupies us more than ever: Old Europe and its relationship to the rest of the world. Current political conditions, refugee movements and the related discussions show just how fundamentally this Europe has become negotiable – politically, economically, culturally and ethically – and has come under immense pressure, both from within and without. But the migration movements that we have observed this year – be it from Africa or the Orient – also show how profoundly the current political situation is a delayed consequence of colonialism and postcolonial policy, that led to a restructuring and remapping of large parts of the earth above all by Europe (later also by the USA and Russia). The political and economic consequences are still being heavily felt today. As much as people are fleeing to Europe as a haven guaranteeing legal certainty and survival, so too is it increasingly Veronica being called into question as new international centres of power Kaup-Hasler arise – including China, Brazil or Russia. Is philosopher Walter Mignolo right in postulating that Europe has long been losing its importance, or Giorgio Agamben, who sees collapse as the only chance for the future of a different Europe? But perhaps the current situation itself is a chance to work on the idea of Europe beyond a purely economic context, to salvage this construction for the 21st century. What values, what concept of the human being, what models of education need to be decolonialised in the dialogue with the world so as to reconceive them on a different basis? This year’s leitmotif “Wir schaffen das. On the Shifting of Cultural Cartographies” presumptuously recalls a phrase used by Angela Merkel, in turn quoting Barack Obama – a naive and fateful statement perhaps, but one which hints at the potential utopian content of Europe: A community of democratic states, a zone that safeguards the basic values of humane, peaceful coexistence, a community bound by solidarity that – as entrenched in most constitutions – guarantees equal opportunities, free access to education and social security. And one which together finds ways of meeting the challenges of the day in a pragmatic manner, not driven by fear. 1

preface Topics and questions such as these run through the programme of 2016 steirischer herbst, featuring in many different ways in artistic and curatorial interventions. Swiss theatre and film-maker Milo Rau, for instance, with his International Institute of Political Murder presents the stories of people who came to Europe as refugees or who have their home on its fringes, asking: Are ancient European traditions endangered, or is migration not simply one of them? Catalan artist group El Conde de Torrefiel takes a look at the hidden fears of the people of Graz, constructing theatrical Tableaux vivants of our society. In Leutschach, southern Styria, the renowned documentary theatre duo Hans-Werner Kroesinger and Regine Dura are organising performance-based walks with the aim of examining the subject of drawing borders in the history of the region, while in Leibnitz the Greek Blitz Theatre Group stages a surreal waltz of the dead on the ruins of Europe. But steirischer herbst also looks far beyond the boundaries of Europe and has also invited artists from outside Europe – more than ever before – to develop new works on this set of themes: One work has been commissioned to Angolan artist Kiluanji Kia Henda, who is realising his biggest land art placement to date in Seggauberg, erecting a sculpture made up of hundreds of iron bars, a monument to people who have lost their lives while fleeing from wars or unlivable situations. US artist Steffani Jemison, in turn, casts an eye on the collection of the Neue Galerie, developing a music-based performance on the question of what 19th and 20th century landscape painting can tell us about world views then and now. At the herbst exhibition, taking place this year at Kunsthaus, Indian curator Zasha Colah mounts “Body Luggage”, a show investigating the migration of gestures, body posture and knowledge transfer between cultures and times. The works of Styrian visual artist Markus Jeschaunig, on show at Kunsthalle Graz, also present different maps when he creates textile aroma domes, in which he tries to capture current events in Europe in scents and aromas from different sites. At Camera Austria, photo artist Markus Krottendorfer documents scenes of a Eurocentric description of the world. musikprotokoll 2016 also sets out to inspect its own cultural map for terrae incognitae, stretching the globe of charted worlds of music in all directions. Physically, when Renald Deppe joins Tehran-born composer and electronic musician Hassan Zanjirani Farahani to explore new territories or Deena Abdelwahed, who situates her art in the coordinate system between Tunisia and Western Europe. Coordinates can also be perceived in terms of time, as in the project “Die Logik der Engel” in which distant vocal music from the 13th and 14th century meets miniature premieres from the here and now. Musical maps abound. 2

preface More than ever, hybrid places and events are characteristic of steirischer herbst, for instance when German artist Julian Hetzel opens a “Schuldfabrik” in an installation-based trail between performance and visual art, setting out to examine the various facets of debt and guilt. Or when choreographer Philipp Gehmacher develops an exhibition in which he himself is a performer, while Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien focuses on performance as such in a large-scale project. Things become readily visible and obvious when nature, philosophy and theory converge: For five days, the artist collective Mamaza are using plants donated by local residents to transform the Orpheum into a “Garden State”, an interior dominated by nature – artificial sunrises and sunsets and thundershowers included. The herbst Academy is taking root in this rank landscape, joining international guests from art, theory and science, the interested public and students to discuss identities and belongings, decolonial strategies, post-otherness and critical whiteness, changing geographies and economic areas as well as the everyday practices of a different Europe that deserves our protection. This year, steirischer herbst is proclaiming an Arrival Zone in the area around the Volksgarten Pavilion – a network of art spaces and venues for events marked by architectural interventions by British artist couple Morag Myerscough and Luke Morgan. Over a period of several months the aim is to develop a participatory art project with a programme of events devised in a collective process by < rotor >, the international, Graz-based Daily Rhythms Collective, local residents and initiatives. While this project will be open to everyone during the day, night-owls will be able to attend a new programme at the Orpheum: A pop-up club featuring a host of international live acts and DJs who will each be transplanting their particular scene to Graz for one night. The focus is on hybrid forms, crossing borders, mixing and the free association of sounds, genres, origins and modes of working. club panamur is much more than a concert programme, it explores the central theme of the festival with different means – through the night. This abundance of events kicks off with the opening production staged by French theatre wizard Philippe Quesne, who contrasts the agitation of our times with the life of moles and their slow-placed, but tireless activity as a metaphor – while the world is burning and collapsing over our heads, we blithely carry on digging underground. Once again, this preface cannot convey everything that we are looking forward to and that people have been working on now for months. So please go on reading on your own – be inspired by what promises to be a fascinating steirischer herbst festival and share many days and nights with us! You can do this! 3

This year’s opening production whisks us off to the dream worlds of French theatre wizard Philippe Quesne. For steirischer herbst he digs his way under the surface of the earth, where he encounters a fantastic society. In “The Night of the Moles (Welcome to Caveland!)” Philippe Quesne invites the audience to a mysterious underworld. The cave conjures up associations of primeval grottos, home-made ghost trains and nuclear bunkers, and is home to a community of giant moles living through the cycles of life: Birth and death, eating and being eaten, creation and destruction. Blind but doggedly, Quesne’s creatures grapple with everyday life. Descendants of Sisyphus, they spend their time pointlessly rolling rocks to and from – a perfect metaphor for human beings and their actions. Playful, voracious, lovable and at times deadly aggressive, man’s furry relatives await future events that never happen, thus evoking Samuel Beckett’s absurd characters, and also Plato’s allegory of the cave. In spite of their seemingly aimless existence they never cease to evolve, lining up as a psychedelic rock band or indulging in peculiar rituals. Quesne’s insights into the molehill turn the theatre into a utopian habitat where dreams and reality become indivisible. He weaves his magic with the simplest of means, humour and a love of the bizarre. Together with artists from the spheres of acting, music and visual arts, he creates impressive low-tech spectacles and grand theatre tableaux. A kind of follow-up to “Swamp Club” (2013), at the end of which the occupants of an endangered culture centre are saved by a huge mole, Philippe Quesne drafts a truly soul-stirring performance, that is installation, philosophy in motion and opening act in one. After the premiere the Graz and New York-based artist Dorit Chrysler joins the “mole” Thomas Suire and his Parisian trio Infecticide for a unique opening concert: Electropunk meets experimental pop, in a perfect coupling centred around the theremin, a cult instrument played without physical contact.

Eternity and mortality between Orient and Occident: Together with Gustav Mahler and vibrating porcelain, two artists from Needcompany draft a new universe for a deliciously fragile choreography.

Premiere Sat 24/09 & Sun 25/09, 19.30 Orpheum 60’ 19 €

When Mahler was diagnosed with a fatal disease, he composed “The Farewell”, one of his saddest and most personal works. In the latest performance by Grace Ellen Barkey and Lot Lemm, this piece from “The Song of the Earth” cycle develops in the midst of a fragile and sensual stage installation. As members of Needcompany, these two artists were part of the highly successful opening of the 2014 steirischer herbst, “All Tomorrow’s Parties”.

von der Erde (Der Abschied)” With Mélissa Guérin, Benoît Gob, Sarah Lutz, Maarten Seghers, Mohamed Toukabri Dramaturgy Elke Janssens

In his cycle, Mahler assimilates man’s struggle against his own mortality in contrast to the eternal, ever-renewing nature. He was inspired by ancient Chinese poetry that was extremely popular in Europe towards the end of the 19th century. Precious porcelain was another much collected item at that time. Lemm&Barkey have been experimenting with this precious material for several years, inventing new objects and also using porcelain as a material for costumes. In “The Porcelain Project” they used an oversized soil shaker to make porcelain vibrate, thus creating a very unique, impressive sound.

steirischer herbst is screening the latest film of Thailand’s internationally most important director Apichatpong Weerasethakul for the first time in Graz: A gentle masterpiece of dreamlike magic. Apichatpong Weerasethakul was awarded the Palme d’Or at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival for his film “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives”. The Thai director’s trademarks are his portrayal of the archaic relationship between human beings, their ancestors and nature, the subtle political reflection on his country and his unpretentious mysticism. In his latest film “Cemetery of Splendour”, spirits and reincarnations once again seem to be a natural part of the everyday world, without him ever departing from his meditative rhythm, for dazzling special effects.

Among the various treatment methods, a medium is used, the young Keng, who helps the relatives communicate with the comatose men. Is there a link between this mysterious syndrome and the ancient mythical site underneath the hospital? steirischer herbst is showing Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s enigmatic masterpiece for the first time in Graz ahead of his stage production “Fever Room”, that has close parallels with the film in terms of both subject and form.

Projected consciousness: Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s first stage production is showing for the first time in the German-speaking region at the steirischer herbst festival. It’s probably fair to say that no other film-maker can build up an atmosphere of mysticism and mystery without any horror effects as skillfully as Apichatpong Weerasethakul. In unassuming fashion, the deceased ancestors and phantoms that haunt in his films, still get very much under our skin. Weerasethakul takes a step closer to his audience with his very first piece for theatre by reversing viewing conditions from the beginning: Once the audience have taken their seats on the stage, the auditorium is transformed into an uncanny projection screen for a bewitching blurring of reality and fantasy. Jen and Itt, the protagonists from Weerasethakul’s latest film “Cemetery of Splendour”, also inhabit this “Fever Room”. They meet in a dream, their memories merging with those of the director to form a fiction. The fact that his characters take refuge in dream worlds also has a political background: Because of its military dictatorship, Thailand has been on the brink of collapse for years. “Fever Room” documents a personal and national history as if everything were very soon to disappear. As in “Cemetery of Splendour”, the hospital is once again a locus of transition and transcendence. With the “sequel” to this muchacclaimed film in three-dimensional space, Apichatpong Weerasethakul has created his first, highly unconventional stage production.

How do rituals affect the state and vice versa? Norwegian choreographer Ingri Fiksdal and Danish director Jonas Corell Petersen dream up an atmospherically dense answer to this question. In “State”, a small, new society develops and searches for new mythologies and rituals, dances and costumes, yet remains mindful of the old, lost cultures.

Ingri Fiksdal often deals with themes of perception and affect in her work. Her latest production “State”, set to premiere at steirischer herbst, brings together five dancers in a choreography at the interface between concert and performance. Four new instruments, specially developed for the score composed by noise musician Lasse Marhaug, create a unique sound. The end of the world in Greek: Blitz Theatre Group dances a surreal waltz of death over the ruins of Europe, brimming with subtle melancholy and a fine sense of humour. When everything is disintegrating all you can do is wait for the end while passing the time. Why not with music and dance? An apocalyptic world with three women and three men: Apparently their shabby festive dresses and their memories are all that is left to them. They recount fragmentary stories of the past, of a European war that appears as surreal as the colourful festive illumination of the rundown ballroom where the six people are gathered. They call up memories of happier times and indulge in a farewell to Europe that is as breathtaking as it is depressing. And they dance. One waltz after the other, as if it were a matter of life and death, interrupted only by enthusiastically performed tricks. What are these people waiting for? What are they looking for? “He is thinking of Paris, which was destroyed last November”, someone says at one point. It is prophetic and disconcerting associations like this, of a Europe marked by war, terror and anarchy that have turned “Late Night” by Blitz Theatre Group into a great success. The Greek company’s production is now showing for the first time in Austria. Angeliki Papoulia, Christos Passalis and Giorgos Valaïs have been developing theatre productions aimed at finding answers to social questions since 2004. As in many of their pieces, music plays a crucial role in this gentle and poetic dystopia in three-four time. Thanks for the nice time, Europe, we really enjoyed ourselves.

[Welcome to the European Protection Zone] – A Walk along the Border G Theatre / Performance V Leutschach

Hans-Werner Kroesinger and Regine Dura take their audience on a performance walk along the green border between Austria and Slovenia. “As soon as they arrive they are: Useful / desirable / harmless / undesirable / harmful / dangerous”, says the information sign at the edge of a circular hiking trail in southern Styria. Despite the fact that these terms refer to immigrated plants, such as hogweed, inadvertently one associates them with people whose arrival in Europe is supposed to be controlled and routed through the established border management system. In the hilly landscape of southern Styria, the border is difficult to identify both in terms of geography and culture. Even during the existence of the Republic of Yugoslavia there were neither barricades nor fences marking the border, and for decades the wine region has been working on crossborder tourism. Now all that has changed – the aim is to close the border, fence posts are being put up again and plots of land are being divided. Invited to the 2016 Berliner Theatertreffen festival, the renowned documentary theatre team HansWerner Kroesinger and Regine Dura took a look at contemporary history and the potential future scenarios of this border. At several points along the border two actors and an actress tell stories that jump back and forth between international, local and very private perspectives, historical and political ambiguities and between border and garden fences. “Willkommen in der Europaschutzzone” is a guided walk dealing with political, social and scenic interventions and impressions that raise a series of questions: How are borders manifested and how are they experienced? Where and to what extent do the refugee movements change our relationship with them? And within what borders will we be living in twenty years’ time?

Commissioned by steirischer herbst

What do we know when we see something? Do we really perceive the person in front of us or do we merely react to the codes of a reality that is both familiar and forced upon us? In her solo performance for steirischer herbst, visual artist and choreographer Elisabeth Bakambamba Tambwe explores individual perceptual differences along with the filters applied by us when we categorise our fellow human beings – in her case, for example, as a black, female, artist, mother, etc. Born in Kinshasa and raised in Paris, Tambwe has been living in Austria for ten years. Her works revolve around the interface between dance and text, sound and visual art. In “Pink Eye” she deals with the gaze and how it can be reconquered, thwarted and redirected, focusing on the (self-) manipulation of bodies and their perception by others, both in Western Europe and in Congolese society. She invites the audience to follow her behind the mirror and cast a critical eye on the gaze. Tambwe does not accuse us; with a pinch of cheerful selfmockery she investigates, among other things, her own role as a token black woman in the context of an art world that is predominantly white. In her performance, the “Pink Eye” does not have to put on rose-tinted glasses to discover what is a surprisingly cheerful, trashy world.

Premiere in the German-speaking region Thu 13/10, 19.30 & Sat 15/10, 21.30 Dom im Berg 50’ 19 €

Arabic language with German surtitles Talk following the performance on Sat 15/10 As a child Taoufiq Izeddiou once took part in a Hmadcha ritual, a Sufi ceremony in which the attendees fall into a trance by dancing. For the dancer, choreographer, festival director and pioneer of contemporary Moroccan dance, this was the first encounter both with spirituality and the medium of dance. In his latest piece, the artist, who will be performing for the first time at steirischer herbst, explores the marks that this experience has left on his body and the way it has shaped his artistic work. Like many of Taoufiq Izeddiou’s choreographies, “En Alerte” revolves around the boundaries between tradition and modernity. The title means “attentive” or “being alarmed” and the performer too is in a state of horror and attentiveness as he investigates this traditional form of art from a modern perspective. Accompanied by two musicians, Izeddiou examines spirituality with regard to its uncanny seductive power and as a motive for mindless violence. He translates this duality into sound and movement, throwing himself into battle with his strong body and clear voice, whirling around in circles. And yet Taoufiq Izeddiou has little in common with the exotic dancing dervishes that might, for a moment, come to mind. Instead, “En Alerte”, highly reflective and superbly performed, searches for the hidden roots of a culture.

Together with four performers from different countries, Milo Rau sets out to explore the future of Europe. Based on their own histories, they project epic images of flight and homeland. They come from Greece, Syria, Kurdistan and Romania. Two fled to Europe, two live on its fringes. In “Empire”, the four actors draw on their own histories to probe those questions that crop up only briefly and awkwardly during our daily consumption of the media: What is flight? What is home? And what will the new face of Europe look like? With the final instalment of his acclaimed European trilogy, Milo Rau is presenting a piece at steirischer herbst for the first time. Not without reason is the Swiss director one of the most successful artists on the continent, which he has been scrutinising for years: disputatious, rigorous and unruffled he makes full use of the possibilities of theatre, not only for documentary purposes, but also to take a highly political stand. He achieves this through re-enactments of historical events and lavishly staged court trials, just as impressively as he does now, in the European trilogy, through the power of narration. The narrators in “Empire” not only talk about loss, prison, death and rebirth, but also about how they process these experiences through art. After previously dealing with the themes of radicalisation in part 1, “The Civil Wars”, and coming to terms with the past in part 2, “The Dark Ages”, Milo Rau now joins them to risk a glimpse into an uncertain future. Intimate and yet of epic dimensions, they create a portrait of a mythical and real-political empire. Are European traditions endangered, or is migration not simply one of them? 65% theatre

El Conde de Torrefiel (ES) Guerrilla

browse

G Performance / Dance / Theatre V Graz

Together with a large company, El Conde de Torrefiel projects fascinatingly uncanny images from the comfort zone of Europe: A young generation questions the future – in both senses. What does a young generation think about Europe as it stands today, what questions and anxieties about the future preoccupy them? Barcelona-based performance duo El Conde de Torrefiel focus on young people from Styria in their new stage production. In three monumental choreographies they develop moving still lifes of modern everyday life: A conference, a Tai Chi lesson and a night out. But these seemingly harmonious meetings of a group at the heart of Europe suggest anything but a perfect world, with text floating above the images thwarting this harmony in a manner that is as humorous as it is frightening: El Conde de Torrefiel have put “Guerrilla” questions of our time to the young participants, displaying their answers mixed with fictitious writings over their powerful tableaux. Danger lurks in the questions themselves: “What does the word enemy mean to you?” or “What would you do if there was a war tomorrow?” Swiss Tanya Beyeler and Spaniard Pablo Gisbert have been working together as El Conde de Torrefiel since 2010. Their projects, realised from their base in Barcelona, are black comedies that make the audience aware of their own suppressed impulses and fantasies of violence. “Guerilla” marks the first time El Conde de Torrefiel present one of their visually powerful works in Austria. Their sophisticated blend of contrasting text and imagery pointedly highlights current tensions in Europe, demonstrating that declarations of war are made first in people’s minds, even in the comfort zone of Europe. 50% participation 25% question s about the future

Markers for the Arrival Zone

G Architecture / Installation / Visual Arts V Graz / Arrival Zone

Artist duo Morag Myerscough and Luke Morgan from London, create architectural markers for the 2016 steirischer herbst Arrival Zone in Graz’s Annenviertel district.

24/09 – 16/10 Arrival Zone, Orpheum & Volksgarten-Pavillon Mon – Sun 00.00 – 24.00 Admission free

Arrive. Stay. Depart. Return. Become visible. Like hardly any other district, the Annenviertel is characterised by the coming and going of people of different origins. A suburb of Graz on the River Mur, even centuries ago the area, comprising what are today the districts of Gries and Lend, offered people easier conditions for settling away from the middle-class city centre. Today, Graz is Austria’s fastest growing conurbation – an “Arrival City”, as Doug Saunders describes it in his book of the same name.

Opening Sat 24/09, 18.00 By and with Luke Morgan (GB),

Morag Myerscough (GB)

In “Open Wide”, Myerscough and Morgan install marks in urban space that highlight the cultural diversity in this part of the city. Involving over 100 people from Graz and giving them a sense of belonging and ownership, they will generate a new language of patterns for the steirischer herbst venues. From the Orpheum, this year’s temporary site for club panamur, a web of gates, flags, patterns and symbols span an area extending right into the Volksgarten, running across Volksgartenstraße with Julian Hetzel’s “Schuldfabrik”, < rotor > and the Volksgarten Pavilion, that will be transformed into a “House of Open Gates” for the duration of the festival, emphasising the value in collaboration and communication. Everyone is invited to get actively involved and question their own ideas: What colours or patterns do we read as Arabic, British, Indian, Russian, Styrian or African? And what happens when these allocations suddenly stop working? With the aid of temporary meeting places the aim is to engage in a colourful, playful and irreverent celebration of a part of urban space in Graz, that left behind the compulsion to follow dominant culture and homeland clichés long ago.

[Microcosm]

G Performance / Visual Arts / Music / Installation V Graz

A different kind of museum experience: US artists Steffani Jemison and Justin Hicks take a performance-based look at the Neue Galerie collection. There’s buzzing, humming, singing, screaming and whispering at the Neue Galerie. On the walls, landscape paintings from Waldmüller to Thöny. Images of an age long gone that reveal much more than merely the masterful portrayal of landscapes. They manifest different attitudes towards the world. And in between, an odd procession of people making music, singing and talking. In her exhibitions and performances, US artist Steffani Jemison considers how literacy and language are inflected by the legacies of slavery and colonialism. For steirischer herbst 2016 she joins forces with composer Justin Hicks to focus a critical eye on the current exhibition at Neue Galerie. By means of a wide range of different musical languages and quotations – from Béla Bartok to Louis Armstrong – they turn any space into a microcosm. But for Jemison and Hicks, a number of central questions lie concealed behind this apparent lightness: How does a museum organise its visitors, its objects and information? What do landscape and nature have to do with learning and knowledge? What do names have to do with nations? Reading with singing? Landscape with rhythm and blues? And to what extent are hierarchies of gender or hegemonic concepts of Europe in relation to the “other” ingrained in the pictorial worlds on view? In their performances Steffani Jemison and Justin Hicks break with the conventions of the white cube, intervening in and questioning museum contexts with the aid of texts and music; most recently at the New York Museum of Modern Art in 2015. At the invitation of steirischer herbst, they are bringing their first performance to Europe. After the premiere, their performance tour will be available as an audio guide.

How do we profit from debt? Can we somehow get rid of it? In an installative trail over several rooms, Julian Hetzel investigates the concept of debt. Strikingly and surprisingly, he demonstrates the different types of indulgence trade between beauty clinic and soap production. Schuld und Schulden, guilt and debts – these terms are inextricably linked: Guilt as a moral obligation, debt as an economic obligation mutually duplicate each other. Julian Hetzel’s “Schuldfabrik” examines this conflict and the fact that even at birth we receive a rucksack full of historical or religious events as baggage – a collective guilt for something that we ourselves have not caused. Starting with his own, very personal “debt package”, for steirischer herbst, Hetzel builds a trail with different options for exploring the various aspects of debt – and perhaps even for paying it off. The audience enters a concept store, a beauty clinic, a confessional and a soap factory. Can you simply cleanse yourself of pain, or do you have to feel guilty for it afterwards? The raw materials used in this performative installation are guilt and debt, processed, produced and made into objects. There are several ways in, but no way out: Once you go into the production methods of the “Schuldfabrik”, there are no more excuses. Utrecht-based German artist Julian Hetzel works at the interface between theatre, performance and visual art. He combines documentary approaches with political dimensions. He was invited by steirischer herbst to develop the “Schuldfabrik” project. Playful, provocative and always surprising, he brings the collective obligation to remember, into a dialogue with the individual right to forget.

Julian Hetzel donates money, and that is art! He explains his project on hunger and success in an entertaining lecture performance at steirischer herbst. Development aid as art, how can that work? At the same time Julian Hetzel develops a “Schuldfabrik” for steirischer herbst 2016, he also fulfils his debt to society: For the realisation of “The Benefactor”, he received a project budget of euro 2,000 from his theatre school DasArts. Since then he has donated one euro a day to a girl living in poverty in Africa. This autumn, the period of almost five and a half years comes to an end – reason enough for Julian Hetzel to reflect on his life phase as a benefactor through a lecture performance.

The inspiration for Hetzel’s project was a statement by the Dutch politician Frits Bolkestein: “We should not cut the budget for the arts. We should increase it. But first we’ll finance art by cutting development aid!” With his extraordinary donation action, which he describes as a 2,000-day-long intercontinental continuous performance, Julian Hetzel questions this radical proposal and at the same time reverses it. All those involved have benefitted – including Hetzel himself, who in the meantime has earned far more than euro 2,000 by giving lectures about his project. A performance about the thin line between life, art and economy and the ethics of success.

Performer and choreographer Philipp Gehmacher ventures into the realm of visual art, asking: Where do the things of the world come from? And how can we grasp them? Philipp Gehmacher is one of the most important figures in the contemporary European performance scene. His choreographies are set in the domain between performance and exhibition, repeatedly questioning the materiality of bodies. He regularly deals with the ability and inability of bodies to communicate and their constitution in the modern world. With specially developed sculptures, the Vienna-based artist is now making a foray into the exhibition space. Bodies have thus become objects, and once again he questions their state and their nature. The desire to make things speak “for themselves” is the focal point of “Die Dinge der Welt”, Gehmacher’s latest project, a work commissioned by steirischer herbst. The aim is to find and shape objects, to examine them for a possible “narrative”. As a visual artist too, Philipp Gehmacher retains the subtle humour of his performances where he as a performer sets out to exhibit and portray his personal relationship to the world. In his exhibition at Haus der Architektur he will interact with new sculptures in specially developed performances, relating the artificial body to the artist’s body.

Time for a cup of coffee? Tea? For the duration of the festival the Volksgarten Pavilion opens its doors and turns into a place where everyone is welcome, presenting itself as the exemplary heart of the Arrival City of Graz. < rotor > centre for contemporary art, not only coined the Annenviertel district’s name, but for years it has also been forging links within and beyond the field of art, by integrating people from a wide range of backgrounds into its programme. In collaboration with steirischer herbst 2016 < rotor > is now expanding its field of work, turning the Volksgarten Pavilion into a “House of Open Gates” where people from all cultures and artistic disciplines can meet to critically discuss existing conditions and conjure up dreams of a life of freedom, justice and solidarity. The result of a collective process involving artists and people from the neighbourhood, the pavilion is the heart of the Arrival Zone proclaimed by steirischer herbst: A project room for (new) arrivals and long-established residents. Coordinated by Daniela Brasil, the temporary design of the pavilion’s interior offers room to the “Samowar Café” where the elegant teakettle and countless cups of tea invite visitors to engage in a verbal, nonverbal and artistic exchange. This and other events have been organised in collaboration with numerous local organisations and associations. In addition, canapés will be served matching the various projects presented. People fancying a hot meal will be sent out on a culinary tour of the neighbourhood – artists Maryam Mohammadi and Kate Howlett-Jones integrate recipes from women of various backgrounds into the menus of local restaurants and pubs. Following the “Dance at the Pavilion” on September 25, each week from Thursday to Sunday there will be readings, presentations, games, musical events, workshops and round table talks – always accompanied, of course, by a cup of coffee or tea.

In the Middle and Far East, tea rooms serve as centres of social interaction. Drinking tea is an everyday mode of communication in states such as Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Syria and Lebanon. Japan and China even erect buildings dedicated to tea drinking – a source of inspiration for Rainer Prohaska. The Krems-born artist has been invited to solo exhibitions and lectures in numerous countries and has got to know about different forms of tea ceremonies. Inspired by this, Prohaska invites people to build a “Mobile Tea House” together. With the aid of ratchet straps and beams used in timber construction, the aim is to build a social site that will serve tea for the whole community. In this combination of architecture and performance, Prohaska builds a bridge between cultural differences. The special mode of construction and aesthetic embody flexibility and the positive handling of change. By means of contributions from guest artists, the tea house becomes a hub of talk, discussion and chat. But what may not be missing: Tea ceremonies from a wide range of cultures around the world.

Austria’s border with Slovenia is rich in history: Once a theatre of war, it later became home to hiking trails and – just recently – fences. What will the border look like in autumn 2016? It’s a controversial issue and because, as they say, talking brings people together and the best talk is always over dinner, space and place with steirischer herbst invite you to a “Social Dining” in Leutschach.

By and with space and place – Monika M. Kalcsics, Eugene Quinn & with 40 guests from politics, culture and the region

Commissioned by steirischer herbst

The “Grenzlandgespräche” are a special kind of blind date, with people meeting other people with whom they don’t often have dinner with. People that talk about the current situation and about what it used to be like in the border area. The hosts of a three-course menu of local specialities include mayors, wine-growers, artists and many others. There will also be a menu of questions intended to engage the participants in a deep discussion of globe-spanning events and everyday affairs. Monika M. Kalcsics from Graz has received international prizes for her documentaries and reports broadcast on Ö1. British artist Eugene Quinn is an urbanist and inventor of the Vienna Ugly Walks. Moving art stories: Drawing from historical examples and the contemporary disquiet, this year’s herbst exhibition explores body language as a cultural form of expression across the boundaries of time and space. When everything can be confiscated from those in flight the body is turned into an archive, where experience and memory are inscribed. Everything a person has experienced, all that he or she is or has been, is inscribed on their body, a body that cannot simply be taken off. How are artistic vocabularies relayed across geographical and temporal boundaries? And what specific artistic objects result from this multiple migration? From the particularities of historical continuities the exhibition questions art historical methods, engaging with various attempts to contain world art history. Enlightenment attempts to find geographical continuity have been critically dismantled, just as ethnography and the discipline of anthropology were so much born from the colonial enlightenment encounter. Yet, as a form of thinking – with unique textual-visual methods – several works in the exhibition seek how art historical methods may be put to wider avant-garde political potential. By placing history alongside artistic mutations the exhibition asks how avant-garde forms are transmitted or provoked. Why does an Austrian choreographer in the 30s, forced to flee from the Nazi regime to Bombay, exchange the word “dance” for “body movement”? What induces an artist, after six years in prison, to engage in ancient forms of dance as a basis for pioneering performance art in Myanmar under the dictatorship of the 90s? Why does an artist consider the body parts of mass graves in Bosnia, still to be able to bear individualised memory? Indian-born curator, art historian and co-founder of Clark House Initiative, Zasha Colah’s work frequently focuses on questions of cultural legacy in precarious circumstances. Before co-curating the Pune Biennale 2017 she has invited a number of artists to join her in Graz and probe the field of tension between art and the often extreme social conditions by which it is determined.

Guided tour “Culture as a matter of opinion” ➜ 91 Talking Art ➜ 93 Shuttle Service ➜ 94 With Markus Krottendorfer (AT) Curated by Reinhard Braun (AT) Co-produced by steirischer herbst, Camera Austria

Markus Krottendorfer documents scenes of a Eurocentric description of the world, meandering between archaeology and invention of the world. A mountain range in West Africa that was “discovered” at the end of the 18th century, but which vanished from maps by 1905 if not earlier – thus never really existing – is the starting point of research for Markus Krottendorfer’s documentary journey. A similar story about how we construct maps and histories ourselves is told by a skull discovered in East Sussex in 1912 that was thought to prove that modern man evolved in Europe. It was exposed as a forgery in 1953. Two seemingly unconnected incidents, nevertheless belonging to a common history that tells of power and sovereignty over interpretation. Camera Austria presents a newly produced project by Markus Krottendorfer, who recurrently examines the history of projections of the world and world views, revisiting utopias and exploring their ramified effects in the present. He experiments with new and historical techniques and media, thus engaging in a kind of archaeology of images and their meanings.

For the current show, Markus Krottendorfer travels to scenes of a Eurocentric description of the world. By operating in the realm between research and documentation on the one hand, and exaggeration, deception and manipulation on the other, he also raises fundamental questions of documentary work today.

The Language of Ceramics G Visual Arts V Graz

Together with artists Ai Weiwei and Edmund de Waal, Kunsthaus Graz focuses on a material long attributed to the realm of handicraft: Ceramics. Some of the earliest artworks were ceramics. The modern age in Europe was characterised by an insatiable desire for Chinese porcelain that would fetch top prices. Be they containers for everyday use or artworks – from time immemorial ceramics would travel the globe, uniting civilisations that knew little of each other. Long regarded as high art, the medium had a tough time in the recent ages, with ceramic art being put in second place as craftwork.

Today we are increasingly being confronted with this material as the focus falls on recent Asian art and as artistic practice continues to open up. The exhibition “Kneaded Knowledge” in Space01 at Kunsthaus Graz takes a special look at the changes of a medium that has challenged our imagination for long periods: From olden times to nowadays. Two outstanding artists who devote great attention to this material, Ai Weiwei and Edmund de Waal, act as curatorial and artistic partners for the show. For “Kneaded Knowledge” they join Peter Pakesch to engage in a dialogue on the handling of ceramics across times and cultures. Naturally, their own works also feature at the exhibition – alongside prominent figures and important historical material.

Thomas More’s “Utopia” turns 500 – studio Asynchrome sets out to celebrate the great narration in the smallest gallery. For Marleen Leitner and Michael Schitnig utopia is an opportunity and a tool in equal measure. Which is why they have chosen Thomas More’s “Utopia”, which was published in 1516 and shaped our ideas of ideal societies in the near and distant future, as the starting point for their work for the smallest gallery – collaboration space. Leitner and Schitnig, aka studio Asynchrome, have been exploring spatial and societal structures since 2013. Working at the interface between art and architecture, the two artists see drawing as a hermeneutic epistemological method for assimilating and interpreting process-based developments and complex facts. The comic medium allows them to highlight spaces of opportunity within architecture and the visual arts by means of narration, facilitating an experimental experience of these spaces. In 2015 the Austrian artist duo contributed to “Randnotizen” of steirischer herbst. This year, in keeping with the motto “utopia is dead, long live utopia”, studio Asynchrome sets out on a multimodal search for traces, designing a new piece for the smallest gallery which will take up the entire exhibition space (256 x 174 x 45 cm). Based on the English scholar’s philosophical text, they confront utopian thinking of the past with its presentday potential, inspiring us to reflect on the future of the present. What is going to happen next? And how to trace this path seismographically, as indeterminate as it may be?

Does the air know no boundaries? The artistic works of Markus Jeschaunig from Graz revolve around the fourth element as something that belongs to everyone, supposedly with no claims to ownership. In 2015 Jeschaunig appeared at the Milan EXPO with his “Agency in Biosphere” as part of Team.Breathe.Austria and in 2012 he had an airship fly in a straight line from Graz to Maribor. Smells really don’t know any boundaries. For his “World’s Flavor” project Markus Jeschaunig has collected scents and aromas from all over Europe: At significant historical sites, in suburban areas, but also along migrant routes. For example, with a mobile still he captured the smell of a leather chair in the European Parliament and the scent of the countryside at the Turkish-Greek border. He does not concentrate all of these aromas in the world’s finest “perfume”, like the protagonist of Patrick Süskind’s famous novel, but instead in textile aroma domes and aroma points at Kunsthalle Graz, as an olfactory excerpt of Europe. Markus Jeschaunig’s art explores the interrelations of culture and nature. He is interested in questions of ecology, urbanism and technology from the vantage point of art. Inspired by the dynamics of the various layers above our heads – the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere – the artist sets out to decipher social and political systems and to translate them into constellations that can be experienced with the senses.

Can art serve as an effective instrument for conceiving utopian alternatives? And how can it avoid being instrumentalised? In an escLAB international artists develop potential answers, raise questions and generate new synergies. Our time may quite rightfully be described as the sum total of all the dystopias of the past fifty years. Whatever Orwell and Co. imagined has come true and some things are even worse than expected. Feelings of fear and powerlessness are deliberately fanned, with political and economic powers using terror attacks, migration crises and the concomitant sense of uncertainty and danger, to call for more efficient surveillance, increased weapon production and so on, boosting their businesses and increasing their profits. The “Zerstören” project deals with the questions raised by this situation: Could an analysis of the exploitative processes and catastrophes that characterise our dystopian world engender new, even more artful deals and speculations? Does the description of misery and suffering offer a kind of vicarious action that relieves us from taking action in real life? And last but not least: Can we escape a dystopian matrix, five hundred years after Thomas More’s “Utopia”, the origin of the utopian concept, was published? Can we write a new programme? Is art, in all its facets and implications, an effective instrument, a utopian island? esc medien kunst labor invites collectives from various artistic disciplines to discuss these questions in an escLAB in Graz. The results will be presented in the exhibition rooms of esc medien kunst labor as part of the steirischer herbst festival: Collective processes consisting of individual approaches that complement each other productively.

Avant-garde composition meets contemporary film meets white cube: Grazer Kunstverein mounts a solo show for British artist Beatrice Gibson, presenting her film work from the past ten years.

24/09 – 27/11 Grazer Kunstverein Wed – Sun 11.00 – 18.00 3.5 €

Beatrice Gibson, born in 1978, is an artist and film-maker from London. Inspired by the legendary Fluxus movement and greats of avant-garde music including John Cage, she explores voice, language, collective production and questions of representation. While Gibson’s film narratives appear fragmentary when viewed in isolation, they piece together to make up a cogent, never-ending artistic process and work.

Opening Sat 24/09, 15.00

For the first time, the exhibition in Graz presents a wide range of Gibson’s films from the past ten years, in which the artist above all explores structural parallels between music and economy.

In “F for Fibonacci” from 2014, for instance, Gibson links a scene in William Gaddis’ novel “JR” to combine the aesthetics of the computer game “Minecraft” with descriptive geometry, physical experiments, cartoons and images of Wall Street crashes. “The Tiger’s Mind” (2012) draws on a musical score as the basis for generating language. There will also be films showing in the Members Library, with the artist having carte blanche to select works that have influenced her.

In an exhibition on performance art, accompanied by live performances, Künstlerhaus explores the boundaries between active and passive: Are performers and viewers united or separated by the medium? A performance is a highly ephemeral event. Someone does something while others are watching and that’s it. Is it? The exhibition “Yes, but is it performable?” invites international protagonists of the scene to Graz to investigate questions of the performative, confronting present-day formats with key positions from the history of the genre. Every week a new performance, along with other artistic interventions, will expand and change the face of the exhibition, with the first one taking place on the occasion of the exhibition opening and three more to follow on the Wednesday of each festival week. Sarah Mendelsohn and Fred Schmidt-Arenales, Nezaket Ekici and Marie Karlberg – their artistic interventions are set to leave their mark in the form of objects that will be on show until the end of the exhibition. “Yes, but is it performable?” deals with the question of whether artist and artwork can be separated, highlighting the specific performative aspect with a view to its transient double effect of being both “artificial” and “real”.

G Visual Arts / Architecture / Literature V Graz

Forum Stadtpark sets out to translate current discussions on Europe into a spatial installation: A palace, open on two sides and consisting of elements and fragments derived from the European dream. Ouzhou is the Chinese word for Europe and a palace is a building that evokes fantasies of spaciousness, abundance and luxury – at all times and in all cultures. “Ouzhou Palace” then, is set somewhere between hall of mirrors, Asian restaurant and European dream. Claudia Gerhäusser, Bernhard Luthringshausen, Christoph Szalay, Evelyn Temmel and Clara Wildberger work in the fields of architecture, photography, fine art and literature. As part of the “City Hall of Hearts” focus at Forum Stadtpark and in co-operation with steirischer herbst they set out to investigate Europe by focusing on local conditions manifesting the discrepancy between values, ideals and dreams. Being open on two sides, “Ouzhou Palace” obeys its own spatial logic and seeks to visualise a collective history on the basis of numerous individual elements. Thus the location itself and all the objects, images, opinions and ideas found there, are turned into a new entity in our investigation of Ouzhou, the much longed-for continent.

In collaboration with “House of Open Gates”, Austrian and international artists set out to investigate the conditions that characterise Graz as a city of immigration. The Annenviertel district – where the city’s new residents, migrants and asylum seekers find a host of networks that help them find their way around and settle in Graz. Numerous shops, run by migrants, political and cultural associations, sports clubs, religious gathering places as well as educational and social facilities, allow them to keep up their native cultural and language traditions. “New Graz” brings together a number of artistic initiatives curated and designed in a collective process and aimed at investigating the conditions met by new arrivals in districts such as Annenviertel and cities such as Graz. Artist Jun Yang, for example, explores the experiences and motives of Chinese migrants, while artist Moira Zoitl deals with the question of how West African women cope with the manifold ways of life in Graz and their native countries. In various ways “New Graz” provides a stage for people who at some point in the past set up home here and their narrations of how they were welcomed by the Arrival City. The projects are set to take place at < rotor > centre for contemporary art and the nearby Volksgarten Pavilion. Thus “Narratives from the Arrival City” takes a clear stance on the current political situation. Despite all efforts to temporarily seal off the country’s borders, there is no denying that Austria has always been a country of immigration. The emergence of urban spaces and the growth of cities in particular are dependent on foreign migration and the project draws on a wide variety of artistic media to remind us once again of this fact.

G Visual Arts / Installation V Leibnitz

Angolan artist Kiluanji Kia Henda invites the audience to take part in an artistic outing along the south Styrian border, inserting an installation in the landscape that spotlights current political events. Blood is red and wine is red – a simple fact, which for millennia has been mentioned in biblical parables, texts, lyrics and popular everyday culture. However, in southern Styria Kiluanji Kia Henda has spotted another similarity: Between the patterns created by the metal barriers recently erected to seal off the country and the structures used to prop up grapevines. On his first trip to the border region the multimedia artist encountered idyllic grapevines, an entertaining musical evening in a Buschenschank and an astonishing number of crucifixes and wayside shrines. Inspired by this experience and commissioned by steirischer herbst, Kia Henda, who lives in Luanda and Lisbon, has developed one of his largest installations in a public space so far, in a field owned by Schloss Seggau. Consisting of hundreds of blood-red metal bars set up in the border region, the installation oppressively relates current fears in society, Catholic traditions and south Styrian winegrowing with the fences that mark out the country’s long invisible border with Slovenia. “This is my Blood” symbolises to Kia Henda not only the pact between Man and God, but also the tragedy of thousands of refugees who are losing their lives in and around Europe.

Bratstvo i Jedinstvo

[Fraternity and Unity] – In Times of Deregulation G Visual Arts V Graz

When steirischer herbst was founded some fifty years ago the term Trigon was coined to refer to the artistic dialogue between Yugoslavia, Austria and Italy. Following the disintegration of Yugoslavia it has come to be characterised by increasing deregulation. The “Bratstvo i Jedinstvo” exhibition sets out to trace these processes of transformation, including a number of Austrian and Serbian positions dealing with urban planning projects and the ensuing – or missing – forms of discussion or even protest. How do dynamic processes influence cities such as Belgrade and Graz? And how do recent tendencies such as the walling up of borders affect a geographical area that has, until now, defined itself as an open community?

Mental maps and decolonial perspectives on the here and now G Theory / Discourse / Workshop V Graz / Arrival Zone

The herbst conference investigates Europe’s current state from a postcolonial and decolonial perspective. What ways are there to talk about Europe? Who should we listen to and which utopias are still (or perhaps again) conceivable today?

Is Europe obsolete? What remains of the small utopian region which, only 20 years ago, was the focus of hopes for a peaceful and pluralistic 21st century? There is every indication that the “old world”, reinvented as European Union, is a profoundly vulnerable and crumbling structure. Philosopher Giorgio Agamben even sees the “recapitulation of each and every historical possibility of the West” on the line.

The 2016 herbst conference deals with the utopias and realities of a Europe marked by disagreement in the light of recent crises, proliferating nationalism and eroding democracies. Based on specific examples, lectures, discussions, lecture-performances and work groups set out to examine the repercussions caused by colonialist patterns of thought and hegemony along with alternative ways of thinking and formats beyond the Western canon. How can we talk about Europe without falling back on dominant categorisations rooted in Eurocentrism and Western capitalism? In the “Garden State” created by artist collective Mamaza international guests from the fields of art, theory and science join students and the interested public to discuss identities and belongings, decolonial strategies, postotherness and critical whiteness, changing geographies and economic areas as well as the everyday practices of a different Europe that deserves our protection.

Before the festival begins, the artists from the Mamaza company will be knocking on doors, asking local people for potted loans from their homes, shops and offices. With the aid of the collected plants, they will build the “Garden State”, thus also representing a map of the people from Graz who become part of the installation through their plants. China and the African continent, it is assumed, are the two world regions where the future of globalisation is being drawn up. The research and art project “Chinafrika. Under Construction” has been analysing the cultural relations between both areas for several years, highlighting a process that has fundamentally changed the role of Europe, among other things. Marianne Bechhaus-Gerst (DE) Critical Whiteness and more Workshop 2

Thu 06/10 & Fri 07/10

English language With Marianne

Bechhaus-Gerst (DE)

What does it mean to be white? This seemingly banal question remains rarely asked. Most people who define themselves as white have never thought about being white, implicitly considering it the norm from which all “others” who are not white deviate. Whiteness almost always remains unmarked and unreflected – with the focus usually being on the others. Yet being white is quite obviously connected with privileges and power relations that define relationships and interactions with “other” people. In the workshop held by professor of African Studies Marianne Bechhaus-Gerst, the participants reflect on what it is like to be white or not white, and about their experience. The aim is to make whiteness visible as a constructed category of power. Where can we identify white power in everyday culture? And can white people decide to opt out of whiteness?

Rolando Vazquez (NL/MX) From Modernity to the Decolonial Workshop 3

Thu 06/10 & Fri 07/10

English language With Rolando Vazquez (NL/MX)

48

The workshop held by Mexican-Dutch sociologist Rolando Vazquez focuses on the decolonial critique of modernity. It will show how coloniality is deeply embedded in our everyday life. In a dialogue with participants, Vazquez questions the common understanding of progress, development and consumption that can not be thought in separation from processes of destitution, extraction, denial and erasure. In the “Garden State” setting the aim is to discuss to what extent the modern notion of the subject contradicts forms of community, responsibility and the possibility of an ethical life. The decolonial option presents questions hitherto excluded from the modern canon. What are the conditions to recover the possibilities of relating, of listening to truly intercultural perspectives?

For Marjetica Potrč, the appropriation of space by the local community – be it in the rainforest or at the heart of the city – is essential for the construction of a new citizenship. What is the role of artists who do community-based projects? How can they support the needs of local groups without imposing their own ideas? How should they interact with local groups, institutions and government? And crucially, what is the role of residents in shaping their own environment? The Slovenian artist and architect based in Ljubljana and Berlin reports from her practice and invites workshop participants to contribute their own examples and experiences and to discuss them at the “New Graz” exhibition at the center for contemporary art < rotor >.

club panamur G Music / Architecture / Dance / Meeting Point V Graz

browse 100% pop up club

On four weekends during the festival, club panamur invites you to the Orpheum with a transnational programme of music and subversively playful architecture.

24/09 – 15/10 Thu 21.30 – 01.00, Fri, Sat 21.30 – 03.00 & Sun 25/09, 21.30 – 01.00 Orpheum

club panamur is a temporary venue, a pop-up retreat for the festival nights, a meeting point beyond the genre categories of the music industry. The programme looks at the intersections between global music and club cultures and focuses on hybrid forms of music, boundary crossings and the mixing of sounds, genres and working methods.

By Stefan Beer (AT) – junger_beer, Georg Klüver-Pfandtner (AT)

Tambutronic from the Caribbean, Ethiopian Funk and shamanistic Rave, Cold Wave from Japan, Psychedelic Pop from Bahrain and various DJ collectives from Cairo, Berlin and Lisbon: Eleven concerts and DJ nights at club panamur invite international musicians to Graz to conjure up their scene for a night.

Project sponsors digitalis, Synthesa Chemie Gesellschaft, Attensam

Especially for these nights, artist Georg Klüver-Pfandtner and architect Stefan Beer create a shimmering, vital club parasite that digs down deep into its host – the Orpheum – and infiltrates the renowned performance venue playfully, subversively and subtly. The artists “queer” the rooms, shifting entrances, rotating familiar visual axes and perspectives and creating a darkly glamorous dance floor in the heart of the club. The foyer also becomes an inviting space, with an improvised Laubenschenke bar, drawing on the traditional Buschenschank as its visual inspiration, but exaggerating and distorting it, humorously mixing in absurd arrangements of objects.

With hip bass music from Amsterdam and Berlin at the opening weekend of steirischer herbst, Kuenta i Tambu set the rhythm, Sarah Farina DJs.

Although the music of Kuenta i Tambu (“Stories and Drumming”) sounds as fresh as say M.I.A or Major Lazer, it actually dates back centuries, originally coming from the Caribbean island of Curaçao. The culture of Curaçao, first a Spanish then Dutch colony and centre of the slave trade, is predominantly African: The sound of Tambú is characteristic of the island, hence the Amsterdam band call what they create from this rhythmic legacy and the influences of current bass music and Dutch club culture Tambutronic. The quintet headed by founder and percussionist Roël Calister and charismatic singer Diamanta von Lieshdek inspire us with tropical beats and a high-octane live show between hip hop, electro and global bass. Equally fascinated by bass music is Sarah Farina. Her expertise in Jungle, Hip Hop, UK funky and futuristic footwork with R’n’B quirks makes the Berlin-based artist currently one of the most sought-after and likeable DJs in a city whose gloomy technoculture she counters with cheerfulness and openness. Sarah Farina, they say, flashes positivity over even the darkest bass.

Forbidden pleasure: Pål Moddi Knutsen has collected forbidden songs from the blacklists of the world. The Norwegian singersongwriter returns to steirischer herbst with a special project, having spent a year compiling, translating and re-interpreting forbidden songs from all over the world. His new album Unsongs is a moving collection of political songs from Algeria, Lebanon, China, Vietnam, Norway, Mexico, Chile, USA, Israel, Russia and Great Britain. Moddi asks questions about how censorship functions, paying tribute to the writers and interpreters of the songs for their courage. In releasing the music he himself runs the risk of being banned from performing and incurring censorship. He presents his collection live at club panamur.

Tommi Tokyo and Sayaka Botanic met for the first time in London, but founded the band Group A in their hometown of Tokyo. Both cities are characteristic of the duo’s sound: Supercooled industrial music à la Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire is combined with a radically interpreted form of Noise Rock that has always flourished in Japan to create multimedia performance art. The soundtrack for the band’s visually high-contrast performances is created with synthesiser, voice and violin, presented in front of flickering projections, in avant-garde costumes and as always – their distinctive trademark – Asian conical hats.

The eclectic club sounds of Lotic, Kablam and Why Be not only challenge the boundaries between genres but actively fight against them. A uniquely heterogeneous and unboundedly adventuresome scene of international DJs and producers of electronic music have gathered in recent years around the Berlin club and label collective Janus. This new Berlin sound is so diverse in its workings and collaborations it is almost impossible to describe it properly. Within a single DJ set you are as likely to hear techno as R’n’B, trance or pop – sometimes even simultaneously. The CD player is seen as an instrument, with as many as four sound sources running in parallel. The dystopian, even apocalyptic sounds of producer Lotic from Houston, Texas, can be heard on his acclaimed mixtapes and EPs along with remixes for various performers including Icelandic artist Björk. Impartiality is a key characteristic of Swedish artist Kablam: She sees the club as a field of testing, manipulating digital tracks, contrasting a wide range of styles, and thus bringing the different elements and moods together in three dimensions. Korean-born Why Be who grew up in Denmark also creates experimental collages of sound. His sets are hectic, cathartic, uncompromising and, as with Lotic and Kablam, necessarily danceable.

Drawing on Asian sound textures, African rhythms and a keen instinct for pop songs, the Flamingods weave a colourful psychedelic tapestry, impressively adding a spiritual category to the sound of their inspirations, from Animal Collective to Deerhunter. Orient and Occident meet in the personality of Aïsha Devi. The Nepalese Swiss singer let us hear her intense vocals, before New Yorker Dis Fig contrasts street culture with digital aesthetic. Anyone who wants to penetrate the music of Swiss Aïsha Devi must look into her family history. Her debut album “Of Matter and Spirit” is named after a book written by her grandfather, a physicist who worked on the CERN project, although her family roots are in Nepal and Tibet. Devi brings the poles of Western technology and Far Eastern spirituality together in her music. The classically trained singer indulges in an intense metamorphosis, with her rave shamanism taking her on a transcendental journey of dark beats, pulsating synthesisers and digitally manipulated vocal layers à la Grimes, The Knife and Björk. Devi is accompanied visually by the French artist Emile Barret, whose photography, alongside the collaboration with the Chinese performance artist Tianzhuo Chen, is an integral part of Devi’s fascinating look.

And with the founders of VENT – arguably the most experimental and exciting venue in Cairo’s night life – among their ranks, the six have ample experience with clubs. In the face of authoritarian influence, VENT was a musically and politically unique oasis, an almost utopian meeting place of the Egyptian underground. The insights afforded by “Kairo is Koming” show that the Egyptian scene is more open, interesting and networked than ever before. The six have made a name for themselves with recordings on internationally acclaimed labels including Opal Tapes and Kitsuné, and also run a professional music academy. “Kairo is Koming” is part of a global club and music culture where constant exchange of ideas successfully transcends cultural and political boundaries.

feat. DJ Nigga Fox / DJ Firmeza / Nidia Minaj G Music / Meeting Point V Graz / club panamur

With its young DJs, the Lisbon-based label Príncípe Discos creates new sounds and a rhythmic compulsion to dance. Batida is the sound of Lisbon’s suburbs – an unsuspected cross between the polyrhythms of Angolan Kuduro, Afro-House, Tarraxinha and European club music; a complex hybrid full of variety that shakes off the shackles of monotonous techno and guarantees all-night dancing. And yet Batida is more than a style of music, it is the driving force behind a new sense of community and identity in the outlying districts and an expression of a new, global understanding of club culture in and beyond Lisbon. The openness with which a young generation of producers and DJs has created this seemingly totally new sound, has catapulted it onto the favourite lists of music magazines and onto DJ turntables from Berlin to Mexico City. Radiohead singer Thom Yorke is a fan, and the London-based Warp label paid tribute to the scene with a special series of publications. Performing at the festival are three protagonists of the Lisbon Príncípe Discos label, the incubator of the scene. Born in the 1990s, they represent the latest incarnation of this phenomenon but at the same time three very individual interpretations of the new sound: Nidia Minaj, not quite twenty years old, is a master of the fast rhythms, and has recently begun to experiment with gruffly distorted sounds. DJ Firmeza is regarded as technically versed and mainly plays his own drum-driven music. DJ Nigga Fox, finally and quite aptly called his debut album “O Meu Estilo”, “My Style”, developing a truly unique sound between forest idyll and synthesiser.

Hailu Mergia was a star in the 1970s: As keyboarder of the legendary Walias Band he jammed in the hotels of Addis Ababa with such legends as Duke Ellington and Manu Dibango. Mergia took advantage of a US tour to flee the Mengistu regime in Ethiopia and has since been living as a taxi driver in Washington, D.C. The Awesome Tapes from Africa label is to thank for the revival of Mergia’s unique music, with reissues of the album “Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument” (1985) and the dizzying-sum-fetching record “Tche Belew” (1977) which created a furore. Mergia is now back on the road, with exceptional Australian musicians Tony Buck (The Necks) on drums and Mike Majkowski on double bass. Mergia’s music is hypnotic, futuristic and nostalgic in equal measure: The trio’s intense concerts are true one-of-a-kind experiences. Host of the Paradise Bangkok Club nights and percussionist of the Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band, American Chris Menist searches through record boxes in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. What he finds features on his compilations curated for labels including “Soundway” and “Finders Keepers”; and as DJ he shares these rare finds. Thus steirischer herbst 2016 comes to a fitting close on the dance floor with psychedelia from Thailand, Pakistani electropop and Yemeni 7-inches.

[The Green Album] – A Viennese Journey through Styria G Music / Literature V Leibnitz / Graz / Allerheiligen bei Wildon / Leutschach

On their musical tour of town and country, Natalie Ofenböck and Der Nino aus Wien combine Styrian and Viennese sounds – an album like a road movie. Styria and Vienna are worlds apart. But what exactly are the differences? To find out, Natalie Ofenböck and Nino Mandl, aka Der Nino aus Wien, have set out on a tour of Styria. After some memorable experiences between Mariazell and Spielfeld, the two have created a good dozen songs, inspired by wine tasting, visits to cake shops and churches, coffee shops in shopping centres at the border, and conversations with mayors, drunks and others. Borrowing from traditional folk music, Ofenböck and Mandl have invited Styrian musicians to accompany them on the Styrian button accordion, tuba and dulcimer. The familiar rock’n’rollers from Vienna, with whom they have been collaborating for years, also contribute to the unique sound of the CD. In the liner notes Natalie Ofenböck has documented impressions and moments in poetic illustrations. Who triumphs: The beautiful hills of southern Styria or the black heart of the grey buildings of Vienna? Simmering or Semmering?

From time to time we need to check our personal cultural maps for terrae incognitae. For example, where does our concept of “old music” end and where does it begin? Baroque? Renaissance? When it comes to music from the 13th and 14th century, the map tends to get a bit more sketchy. And the early Middle Ages sometimes feel downright strange. What discoveries are to be made then, when Vokalensemble NOVA create a picture puzzle of perception made up of very old and very new music at musikprotokoll! A shift in cultural maps based on the factor of time. musikprotokoll 2016 stretches our globe of charted worlds of music in all directions. Composers Bernhard Lang and Gerhard E. Winkler, for example, discover unsuspected topographies in Schubert’s “Winter Journey”; Renald Deppe surveys new territory together with Tehran-born composer and electronic musician Hassan Zanjirani Farahani; Deena Abdelwahed situates her art in the coordinate system between Tunisia and Western Europe; 85-year-old composer Alvin Lucier ventures along those narrow paths traced by the movements of a cellist’s bow arm; performer Blixa Bargeld manoeuvres his audience along tortuous paths of voice and language; in a joint expedition, RSO Vienna and Klangforum Wien climb the peak of powerful orchestral and ensemble premieres; the SHAPE project organised by the ICAS festival network – a European platform for innovative music and audiovisual art – points the compass towards young music scenes yet to be charted. musikprotokoll at steirischer herbst sets sail for many a hidden realm on its journey this year.

“Die Logik der Engel” is distant vocal music from the 13th and 14th century, is miniature premieres from the here and now in a cabinet of mirrors. The basis of this fascinating journey back in time with six male voices, is an idea devised by Majorcan philosopher and theologian Ramon Llull who died 700 years ago. In his book “Ars magna” Llull describes a logic machine said to be able to distinguish between truth and lie. By rotating three mechanical disks, it was possible to combine concepts so as to form sentences supposed to serve as proof of God. Mathematicians and philosophers such as G.W. Leibniz (1646–1716) made reference to Llull’s logic machine, and modern computer science sees it as an early “generative system”, a precursor to modern computer systems based on algorithms. At musikprotokoll, Llull’s conception is reinterpreted in the form of an interactive sound installation, a Llullophone that can be viewed, heard and operated at Kunsthaus Graz. The concert version will be staged at the Helmut List Halle by Vokalensemble NOVA, who specialise in very, very old and new music.

The harmonica is clamped in place, the banjo in his hands. A ticking mechanical metronome on the floor between the musician’s shoes beats time. While the audience is still reflecting on the repetitive banjo blues harp chordal suggestions just heard, French musician Thomas Bonvalet alias L’Ocelle Mare takes his solo somewhere completely different. In his fascinating, shrewd improvisational excursion he now makes use of retuned forks, a concertina, a ukulele and dried poppies. But he also throws his body into the fray, clapping, stomping and breathing. A L’Ocelle Mare solo – who is described as being as eccentric as he is inventive and ingeniously crazy – can be many things: Soundcrafting, of intense rhythm, sensuous, funny. But one thing’s for sure, it’s an experience.

A name that featured in a wide range of entwined, prominent and underground artistic paths over decades past: As frontman of Einstürzende Neubauten, as founding member of the band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, at the Festival Genialer Dilletanten in 1981, at the Salzburg Festival in 2005, in coproductions with Heiner Müller, Peter Zadek and Teho Teardo. The musician, performance artist, composer, author and actor is now set to make his debut at musikprotokoll. In Graz he is a purist, presenting an (almost) solo, assisted only by his sound technician Boris Wilsdorf. Speaking of names: The pseudonym Bargeld is a nod to Dada artist Johannes Theodor Baargeld, who died in 1927. In 2016 – exactly 100 years after the foundation of the Dada movement – the attitude behind this word is by no means an old hat for actors such as Blixa Bargeld because, as he once observed in another interview: “The destructive character is cheerful and friendly, it knows only one maxim: Making room for new things.”

In the pieces for his solo debut, Andi Stecher explores the musical potential of alpine Perchten processions. Brutish, earthy, powerful, wild and elemental were qualities for which the musician tried to find acoustic analogues; states that he thought his way into while composing. Perchten also inspired him as symbolic precursors of fertility. Once the old has been driven out, the new can be pushed ahead. Andi Stecher’s solo debut is a nod to the rhythm of nature and a solemn appreciation of transition in general, as something that is constantly bringing human life to flourish anew. At musikprotokoll, “austreiben/antreiben” will be showing for the first time in the trio version, including new, as yet unpublished pieces from this series.

Fourteen trumpets, fourteen trombones, seven tubas: Constantin Luser’s “Molecular organ” in the courtyard of the New Chemistry building at Graz University of Technology is a unique, playful and yet serious interactive tubular sculpture and, at the same time, a set of instruments for an entire brass band. This wondrous object was inaugurated at musikprotokoll in 2010, then things went quiet for a while with this sound sculpture. The composers from Graz, from the association known as die andere saite, have now set out to breathe new musical life into the molecular organ. The Studio Dan formation founded by trombonist Daniel Riegler will interpret the nine premieres for molecular organ. Here’s hoping that air molecules will once again pull out all the stops.

All the possibilities of a full orchestral experience of sound combined with all the possible refinements of an ensemblebased collective of soloists lay the foundations for excellent new music and, ultimately, for a new genre of profound exploration of European music (pre)history and innovative, inventive music for the dawning 21st century. Turkish composer Zeynep Gedizlioğlu has been commissioned to create a contemporary “Concerto Grosso”, that will premiere at musikprotokoll, conducted by Johannes Kalitzke. Her latest piece is a commission from Radio Österreich 1 and musikprotokoll. Slovene Vito Žuraj also takes up the challenge of devising a piece for two outstanding orchestras. His work for ensemble and orchestra promises a full-bodied sound experience and will be staged for the first time in Austria.

The Latin word “com-ponere” means “to put together”. In European languages the term has evolved to describe a person who writes music, that is someone who puts together more or less pre-determined building blocks – sounds, tones, rhythms – as a professional. Looked at that way, Alvin Lucier is not a composer – putting together building blocks is not exactly his cup of tea. Quite the contrary.

With compositions by Alvin Lucier (US) With Charles Curtis Quartet (US/DE) Alvin Lucier Talk Fri 07/10, 10.00 Kunstuniversität Graz / Aula Admission free

Examining and challenging these building blocks so as to turn them into music is far more to his taste, with brainwaves generating percussion music and wires causing an endless buzzing all by themselves. Sound waves begin to play with each other; Lucier’s voice traverses spaces, disintegrating language, en passant. His most famous piece “I Am Sitting in a Room” is a particularly pure and minimalistic examination of the voice-space relationship. For musikprotokoll 2016 the eighty-five-year-old “composer” sets out on a new journey once more, with the movement of cellist Charles Curtis’s bow arm serving both as the starting point and end point of his endeavours: The Charles Curtis Quartet will be performing Alvin Lucier’s music in Graz.

Trio premiere: Multitasker Renald Deppe joins forces for the first time with an established virtuoso and a rising wizard of live electronic music. “On the Shifting of Cultural Cartographies” is the subtitle of steirischer herbst 2016. Renald Deppe’s personal artistic map too has seen many a shift – thanks to his exceptional, explorative energy that unceasingly pushes him in various directions. Since the 1970s he has, among other things, repeatedly travelled around Iran, engaging in a lively dialogue with contemporary musicians in this seemingly secluded country. Born in Tehran in 1987, composer and electronic musician Hassan Zanjirani Farahani has come to be one of Renald Deppe’s favourite artistic partners. A saxophonist, clarinettist, teacher, thinker, author, artist, musician, traveller, graphic artist, event organiser, improviser, composer and conceiver, constantly driven by curiosity and his inquiring mind, Renald Deppe frequently invites younger musicians to collaborate with him. Thus the trio constellation at this year’s musikprotokoll is a premiere: Deppe and Farahani will be joined by double bassist Manu Mayr and Renald Deppe will once again be mapping uncharted artistic territory, background noise calligraphy included.

It took some time for contemporary music to find its way into the programme schedule of Österreich 1. Back then Lothar Knessl was producing his first broadcasts: On Sunday, October 15 1967 at 23.10, for example, he reported on experimental music at the Warsaw music festival. Exactly one year later, ORF founded musikprotokoll in Graz as Austria’s first contemporary music festival. Of course, Lothar Knessl was involved. And at eighty-nine he continues to be involved, presenting programmes, travelling to festivals, awaiting premieres, keeping an expert, critical and loving eye on current music scenes. As one of Albert Hosp’s guests at the Ö1 Klassiktreffpunkt, which will be broadcast live from Graz, Lothar Knessl talks about his life on the pulse of contemporary music and his many decades of experience.

People suffering from arithmomania, the compulsion to count, had better steer clear of this musikprotokoll event: Artists and school students from Graz have joined forces to create works dealing with “musical numbers” which will be presented one afternoon. Two years ago “konfrontationen”, a culture education project in which creative folks from various disciplines linked up with young people to realise artistic concepts, was presented at musikprotokoll for the first time. Apart from the tremendously energetic atmosphere, the number of unusual ideas ensuing from this creative constellation was particularly remarkable. Will it be as inspiring again? You can count on it.

Some pieces of music never lose their power to captivate and challenge interpreters and audience alike, and they also have a particular fascination for ever new generations of composers. One of these almost mystical moments in musical history is Franz Schubert’s “Winterreise”, which serves as a source of inspiration and starting point for the work of Bernhard Lang and Gerhard E. Winkler. “Winterreise” as a cold trip and a frosty Blues – the two composers’ approaches to Schubert’s song cycle could not be more different. What the two pieces have in common though, is that they were both written for the Aleph Quartett and New York-based singer Daisy Press.

G Music V Graz

Organic electronic music meets vocals with an electronic touch. Demi Broxa is the joint project of two musicians who have been researching the world of sound with passion and meticulous precision for many years, probing ever deeper into the sound microcosm of their instruments. In her search for new vocal sounds, Agnes Hvizdalek thinks like an electronic musician: In structures, frequencies, tones, highs and lows. Jakob Schneidewind, best known as the bassist of Elektro Guzzi, is a master at weaving techno rhythms with his bass which also pop up from time to time in Demi Broxa’s music. Drawing on a highly versatile sound vocabulary, he reacts lightning fast to Hvizdalek’s abrupt vocal variations, sometimes setting the duo’s musical course, which is always decided on the spur of the moment. Based on free improvisation, Demi Broxa conjure up ever new soundscapes in their concerts.

Split selves and hybrid bodies: In Martin Hiendl’s walk-in opera installation the audience decides what they want to hear. “The cyborg would not recognize the Garden of Eden; it is not made of mud and cannot dream of returning to dust”, writes Donna Haraway in “A Cyborg Manifesto”. In his opera installation for eight voices, ensemble, electronics and video, inspired by this dystopian idea, German composer Martin Hiendl sends two protagonists on a search for their natural voices. One of them – she – might have been a cyborg once, a creature of technology, a human machine, a machine-like human, an asexual being, and yet driven by a desire to know more about her origins. She has doubts about her identity. Having turned into a mass product, her voice no longer signifies her uniqueness. The other one – he/she/it – is a new entity: A golem, Frankenstein or puppeteer, a living thing striving for individuality. A relationship develops between the two that tells of the nature and boundaries of identity, of hybrid bodies, split egos and the need for recognition. We are in paradise, in the Garden of Eden, which we don’t recognise, which never existed. It is but a human invention – paradise means no more than a word, a combination of eight letters to a cyborg. This garden is a place designed for people to walk around. “Paradise” is an opera consisting not of chronological sequences, but of spatialised scenes, of walk-in spaces. The music and bodies are trapped in these spaces, leaving it to the audience when to enter a scene and when to leave it.

Musician and artist Deena Abdelwahed presents her award-winning radio art performance on the living conditions of Tunisian millennials at the musikprotokoll. Who would I be if there was no Internet? Searching for an answer to this question, Deena Abdelwahed has developed a semi-theatrical radio art performance that tells of the everyday conflicts between Tunisia’s Generation Y and their parents, of fragile and vulnerable young identities in the field of tension between traditional Islam and modern Western lifestyle. “All Hail Mother Internet” was one of two works commissioned by Deutschlandradio Kultur and CTM Festival as part of the 2016 Radio Lab, which, in response to tightening asylum rules, set out this year to open up “New Geographies”, rejecting all essentialist ideas of culture. In cooperation with Ö1 Kunstradio, Deena Abdelwahed’s performance is set to take place at the esc medien kunst labor where, as part of the 2016 steirischer herbst festival, collectives from a wide variety of artistic disciplines will be elaborating new networks for these new geographies.

They have already published their first notes in May, and will be adding to them continuously. When they are on site in Graz for one week during the festival, their note-taking will be intensified – thus joining together to form a parallel pre-history and literary continuation of steirischer herbst.

This is the eleventh issue of the herbst festival magazine. As always, it is not a programme booklet that sums up and explains specific works, exhibitions or projects. Instead, it sets out in search of a different kind of closeness – and finds it through contributions from people taking part in the festival. Through portraits and artistic contributions.Through public reflection, by crossing boundaries and thinking out loud. Through theoretical comments dealing with the festival’s leitmotif, “Wir schaffen das.”, from different angles. Through the numerous essays, reports and series of pictures, “herbst. Theorie zur Praxis” becomes a festival project in its own right.

The video documentation “herbst remixed” accompanies the steirischer herbst festival, recording everything that happens. It documents what takes place, remixes what people see, focuses on what goes unobserved, and creates new links. It not only tells you what has been, but also what is to come. And what you’ve missed. It is a collection of pictures in progress, a mash-up, a collage. The result is a new experience of steirischer herbst every day afresh, on show at the festival’s various venues, on the Net and on TV. The “herbst remixed” TV edition stages selected herbst projects on ORF 2 (just before “Steiermark heute”) – a one-minute video experiment in the tightly packed TV advert slot.

education Interdisciplinary

Do you want to go a step further, think a bit deeper, explore an issue more fully? In principle, are you interested in art but not sure how to find the best way through the jungle of our rich and varied programme of events? The education programme at steirischer herbst offers you the opportunity to engage in greater depth with our festival programme. Alongside our main themes “Demarcations”, “Expressivities” and “Culture as a matter of opinion”, we invite you not only to visit the productions at this year’s festival but also to experience, discuss and investigate them. What questions did the artists feel they urgently needed to tackle during the creative process, what questions strike you as a visitor now and what themes prompted the dramaturges to select certain works? We want to encourage mutual exchange among and between the artists, the curators and the public. Our aim is to open up a space in which all of these key questions and activities merge together. Simply put: To create (space for) culture! We are particularly pleased this year to have added some very essential dimensions to the programme in cooperation with the JUKUS association and the Odilien Institute. Young people from a migrant background will be offering themed tours of selected festival exhibitions in various languages. Likewise, sighted and visually impaired people with an interest in art and culture can take part in multisensory guided tours through the “Body Luggage” exhibition at Kunsthaus Graz. Beyond this, we are offering to organise cultural excursion days specially designed for school classes of all ages and also for students, associations or companies. We will gladly help put together a programme and organise encounters and discussions with both artists and curators and will make every effort to meet your individual needs. Project sponsor HUMANIC

Demarcations

If someone builds borders, it’s because they want to protect themselves. But from what? Do borders offer protection from “the others”, or are we not instead creating “the other” by postulating boundaries in the first place? Many artists focus their work on the possibilities of border demarcations with reference to our identity/identities, our bodies, our nations or our “cultures”. What does migration mean – in social, cultural, historical terms? “Late Night” ➜ 12 / “Body Luggage” ➜ 31 / “This is my Blood” ➜ 41 Guided tour “Demarcations” Sat 01/10, 14.00 – 17.00 Meeting point: < rotor > “New Graz“ < rotor > / “The Seismography of the Indefinite“ the smallest gallery – collaboration space / “World’s Flavor“ Kunsthalle Graz In German and other languages 2.50 € / 1.50 € per participant No reservation is necessary. Culture as a matter of opinion

Who or what defines our images of centre and periphery, of Europe and “the rest of the world”? How do the notions of good and evil come about, that separate us from the supposed “others”? “Protecting our values” is a phrase frequently invoked during discussions concerning globalisation and migration. Yet aren’t these “values” also the very reason why and how we see “the others” as different? “Empire“ ➜ 16 / “Mikrokosmos” ➜ 21 / “Mobile Tea House” ➜ 26 / “Body Luggage” ➜ 31 Guided tour “Culture as a matter of opinion” Sat 08/10, 14.00 – 17.00 Meeting point: Kunsthaus Graz “Body Luggage” Kunsthaus Graz / Space02 / “Markus Krottendorfer” Camera Austria / “Kneaded Knowledge” Kunsthaus Graz / Space01 / “Ouzhou Palace” Forum Stadtpark In German and other languages 2.50 € / 1.50 € per participant No reservation is necessary. Expressivities

How do we communicate when we are no longer able to say anything? When our words, our languages, our systems seem to be incompatible? When all means of communication break down, how can we still get to the point? Exchange and collaborate? What “signs” are translatable, so they do not fail when used in interchange, but tell us something instead? Our programme this year examines different forms of expression and their interaction. “Empire” ➜ 16 / “Open Wide” ➜ 19 / “Schuldfabrik” ➜ 22 / “Body Luggage” ➜ 31 Guided tour “Expressivities“ Sat 15/10, 14.00 – 17.00 Meeting point: Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien “Yes, but is it performable?” Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien / “Beatrice Gibson” Grazer Kunstverein / “Zerstören” esc medien kunst labor In German and other languages 2.50 € / 1.50 € per participant No reservation is necessary. Feature and documentary films produced especially for children and young people are the central genre for introducing a critical discussion about politics, history and art. Three festivals – steirischer herbst, Diagonale and doxs! – have joined forces on “doxs& shorts – Festival films on tour in Styria“ in order to present an overview of their films to a wider public of young people beyond the festival activities and within their respective sphere of action. In special presentations at selected cinemas in Graz and many other Styrian towns, we are offering an exploration of the contents of our festival productions and the medium of film as a media education programme for schools, afterschool care facilities and interested young people outside the context of school. Jointly curated by steirischer herbst, Diagonale – Festival of Austrian Film and the children’s and young people’s documentary festival doxs!. Information and registration: education@steirischerherbst.at With support from One World Film Clubs

General information More detailed information about times, opportunities to participate and registration can be found at www.steirischerherbst.at and also in brochures “Programm für Schulen – Filme, Workshops, Spaziergänge” and “davor und danach – Einführungen, Gespräche, Rundgänge”, which we will be happy to send you free of charge on request: education@steirischerherbst.at

Next Step is a network of eight European art festivals, with the aim of fostering the co-production and expansion of the performing arts in Europe. NXTSTP wants to provide impetus to performing artists on the verge of an international breakthrough, by creating access to major theatres and making tours of Europe easier, thus attracting and appealing to new audiences. Examples can be seen at steirischer herbst 2016 through the work of El Conde de Torrefiel (ES), Julian Hetzel (NL/DE), Taoufiq Izeddiou / Anania Danses (MA) and Philippe Quesne (FR). NXTSTP partners: Alkantara Festival (Lisbon), Baltoscandal Festival (Rakvere), Dublin Theater Festival (Dublin), Göteborgs Dans & Teater Festival (Gothenburg), Kunstenfestivaldesarts (Brussels), Noorderzon (Groningen), steirischer herbst festival (Graz), Théâtre National de Bordeaux en Aquitaine (Bordeaux)
