THE SCHOOLHOUSE/COMMUNITY HALL WAS A 20 X 40 FOOT ROOM WITH A CLOAKROOM AND KITCHEN AT EITHER END; NOT EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED THE WEEKLY DANCES COULD FIT INSIDE AT ONCE.
Buildings in small communities often serve more than one purpose, doubling up to fulfill multiple needs on what may be a tight budget. For the residents of Alta Lake, the small summer resort and logging community that preceded Whistler, one small building served as schoolhouse, committee meeting rooms, dining hall, movie theatre and, for some most memorably, weekly dance hall. Founded in 1923 for residents and regular summer visitors, the Alta Lake Community Club (ALCC) organized social events and raised money for community projects. The first school board in the valley was elected in 1932 and a room at the nonoperational Alta Lake Hotel was used as the first classroom. Children in Alta Lake had previously been taught at home using correspondence courses. In 1933 the ALCC decided to use their savings and fundraise to construct a building that could be used as both schoolhouse and community hall. To raise money the ALCC began holding weekly dances in the summer of 1933. After the construction
of the schoolhouse these dances continued for many years and were fondly remembered by both visitors and residents of Alta Lake. Music for these dances was supplied mainly by local residents and many people contributed to an evening’s success. In the 1930s the Woods’ family band would play for the dances, spelled off by Charlie Lundstrom, one of the men who helped to build the hall. Food was provided and donations were collected to cover the cost of the coffee made by Alex Philip. Dorothy, a former employee of Rainbow Lodge in the late 1940s and early 1950s, recalled attending these dances as a young woman. She remembered a small wooden schoolhouse in the woods decorated with an artificial moon hung from the ceiling and dancing to a “group with an old-fashioned fiddle playing the Wayne King waltzes, the polkas and the square dances.” Many of the visitors who attended were from cities and had never square danced before. Everyone in the valley was invited to the dances that could last until 3 or 4 in the morning.
According to Dorothy, “the loggers had the stamina to dance through Sunday, too.” The schoolhouse/community hall was a 20 x 40 foot room with a cloakroom and kitchen at either end; not everyone who attended the weekly dances could fit inside at once. Dick Fairhurst remembered there being more people outside sampling each other’s liquor (which had been carefully hidden beforehand behind logs and stumps) than inside dancing. With all of those people it could be hard to hear the band and sometimes the music would stop well before the dancers did. A new schoolhouse was built in 1956 though the ALCC continued to host events in the community hall. In 1965, when the Highways Department needed the property to develop the Alta Lake Road, the original community hall was burnt down as part of fire practice. The Alta Lake Community Club continued to hold events and work on community projects until the 1990s using the new schoolhouse and later the first Myrtle Philip School.

Creating a stylish outdoor living space can also increase the appeal and value of your home, so it’s always a worthwhile investment. Landscape designers suggest to start with the key elements of fire, water, shade and earth. From there it’s all about the design.

A rug defines the outdoor area and makes it feel more like a room. Complementary colours connect the inside to the outside and create a sense of flow. If your house is neutral, this doesn’t mean you need to stay with muted colours, don’t be afraid to interject some colour. This is the perfect place to mix and match complementary colours and play with prints and patterns.

CREATE A VERTICAL ELEMENT.
Hanging plants, partitions of wooden or metal lattice work and trees all introduce visual interest and privacy. This also reinforces the feeling of virtual walls and creates a more intimate space.

CREATE AMBIENCE WITH LIGHTING OR A HEAT SOURCE.
Lighting is one of the most important elements. Candles, lanterns and fairy lights all create a great ambient glow & a sense of warmth. If you have a larger area to work with, look for a light source that also adds a striking visual feature before night falls. Choosing accessories is our favourite part! Remember to think about texture, patterns and colour when you pick out your pieces. Visualize how you will spend your time in your new outdoor living space. Will you need a coffee table to rest your book and drinks on? Will you lounge on comfy cushions & listen to music? Do you plan to entertain in the evening when the outside temperature cools, in which case you may need blankets? Make a list of the items you’ll need for your “room”.
