CAREERS BULLETIN Higher Education & Careers Fair - 6 March 2018 On Tuesday 6 March, Wycombe High School hosted a Higher Education and Careers Fair complete with over 40 universities and 30 companies that welcomed students in Year 10 -13 from Wycombe High School, John Hampden Grammar School and Sir William Borlase`s Grammar School. The evening was very busy with over 400 parents and students in attendance. The event allowed students and parents to speak with undergraduates as well as professors or representatives from 40 different Universities and Further Education Colleges. The careers fair enabled students to visit a range of colleges and Universities to help them narrow down their options without having to travel across the country to visit each one. What made the evening so special was the unique opportunity to learn about and potentially register interest with any of 30 companies that offered apprenticeships or alternatives to a degree, opening up new possibilities for students that do not want to continue in education. Throughout the evening, parents and students attended a range of careers talks. Kings College delivered an excellent presentation on how to choose the right degree course. Careers presentations also covered healthcare sciences, understanding student finance, applying to veterinary medicine, applying to engineering and applying to law. Student encounters with employers and universities are invaluable in providing up to date information and advice to enable students to make well-informed decisions. We hope the encounters with employers and universities inspired students to consider a career path or job they had not previously considered. Thank you to everyone who made the night such a success and to the pupils who did not attend this year: I would strongly recommend attending next year even if just for half an hour, you will not regret it.

CAREERS BULLETIN Year 12 Work Experience at the Gurdon Institute
9 - 13 July and 16 - 20 July Applications close 19 April The Gurdon Institute is a world-leading centre for research into the biology of development and how normal growth and maintenance can go wrong in diseases such as cancer. Many of the GI scientists have made pioneering contributions to the fields of basic cell biology, cellular reprogramming, epigenetics, and DNA repair. The Gurdon Institute's Public Engagement team has just launched a new work experience programme aimed at A-level students from local state schools. Their goal is to enable students with an interest in science to get first-hand knowledge of an academic research environment when they may not ordinarily have the opportunity to do so. Selected students will spend time in a lab and in hands-on workshops about topics central to research at the Gurdon Institute. In addition, students will read, analyse and present a research paper. Click on the link below to apply for the work placement. The deadline for applications is Thursday 19 April. Completed applications will be sent to the Gurdon Institute by Mrs Miles
