On Thursday 8 February, Emma Sackville, a former student (Class of 2008) and PhD researcher at the University of Bath, spoke at Wycombe High School. Her talk was entitled ‘’But you’re not a real doctor’ and other things my Granny has said to me during my PhD’. Emma is a PhD researcher at the University of Bath, where she is trying to make hydrogen from water to use as a clean energy source. Outside of her PhD, she has spent a lot of time undertaking various methods of science communication and public engagement, including science radio and presenting, science festivals and outreach in schools.Emma talked about her interesting path through university and the associated pitfalls. She gave an outline of the role that chemistry can play, in potentially helping to solve global challenges. She also talked bout the importance of science communication and reasons why you may wish to consider studying a PhD.
