Autumn Term 2016 Newsletter 1 12 September 2016 Newsletter 1 - 12th September 2016 Welcome back to school, we hope you have had an enjoyable and restful summer holiday. There are many opportunities we are funding and supporting this year, so please do read on and we look forward to welcoming you to an event in the very near future. Teaching Maths for Mastery As you will have seen in the press at the end of last term, the Maths Hubs are supporting primary mastery for another four years http://goo.gl/tAQei2. All the funding for this is handled by the Maths Hubs so it is essential that at least one person from each school is on our database to ensure you are kept informed of funded opportunities. If someone has forwarded this newsletter to you please email mathscourses@whs.bucks.sch.uk with your name and school to receive information direct. Local Leaders in Maths Education Conference – 23 September 2016, Holborn Bars, London We still have some places available at this conference which is a great opportunity to hear Vanessa Pittard, Head of Maths DfE give an update and speak about the challenges in maths education and Debbie Morgan, Director of Primary lead a session on teaching mathematics for mastery. Both led very highly rated sessions at the Midlands conference earlier this year. Charlie Stripp, Director of NCETM will also be joining us and delivering the plenary session. For full details of the event and to secure your place please follow the link http://goo.gl/noeNGu Teacher Subject Specialism Training in Mathematics – Information Event Thursday 15 September This is an opportunity for you and your staff to find out more about this fully funded programme which is designed to train qualified teachers, who have had no maths training, to teach maths at KS3 and 4. We have an excellent programme which attracts Masters Credits on successful completion of the six month course. Further details can be found here http://goo.gl/ v5w0Lt . The TSST programme is suitable for anyone currently teaching maths who is not a specialist or any qualified teacher who would like to teach maths in the future. It is equally important that non-specialist maths teachers who have been teaching maths for some time do a course of this type so they can prepare their students thoroughly for the new GCSE specifications. Bar Modelling Course for Primary Teachers This was a very popular and oversubscribed course when we ran it last year and a number of you expressed interest in attending this year. We are going to run two courses, the first on the Oxfordshire/Berkshire border and the second in the Aylesbury area. We expect two teachers from each school to attend all three sessions which take place between 1.30-4pm. The dates for the first course are
Thursday 20 October, Thursday 17 November and Tuesday 31 January. Please email us at mathscourses@whs.bucks.sch.uk with ‘Bar modelling’ as the subject, giving the names of the participants and the address of your school so we can finalise a venue which is close to those involved. Further Maths Support Programme and Core Maths Support Programme If you teach secondary maths you really need to be aware of both of these organisations who fund and give high quality support to both teachers and students. Do check you have registered with FMSP and CMSP and that you have given them your up to date email address! The Hub is working with both organisations to help you increase the numbers of your students studying Mathematics post-16.
