Autumn Term 2016 Newsletter 2 20 October 2016 Newsletter 2 - 20 October 2016 We hope you have all had a good half term and would like to thank you for the interest you have shown in the events we have on offer. We promote these through the newsletter and email some to you directly if opportunities arise between publications. Please do go to our website for details of programmes and events, as well as information about forthcoming projects. It is a good idea for your whole maths team to sign up for a copy of the newsletter so if someone moves job the contact is not lost. http://cygnustsa.co.uk/402/maths-hub
Are you aware of everything mathematical going on in your area? BBO Hub covers most of Bucks; from South Bucks up to Aylesbury and surrounding villages; Oxfordshire up to Oxford and Bicester and their surrounding areas; West Berkshire, Reading; Windsor and Maidenhead. All Maths Hubs operate with ‘soft’ borders and if you are close to two hubs we would strongly recommend that you sign up for both hubs and participate in the events and projects which are closer to you; indeed, we know that many of our schools find this very helpful. Our neighbouring Hubs are GLOW, Enigma and Surrey Plus. However when recruiting for national projects we recommend applying through your 'designated' Hub which should mean you take part in a Work Group in your locality and also minimises travel. To find out which hub(s) covers your area please look at http://www.mathshubs.org.uk/find-your-hub/ We would also recommend that you keep an eye on the NCETM website https://www.ncetm.org.uk/ where you will find details of the national projects hubs are working on, as well as their on-line primary and secondary magazines.
Teaching for Mastery Specialist Programme Congratulations to the three schools who are joining the Primary Teaching for Mastery Specialist Workgroups, they are: Calcot Junior School, Reading, Tyler’s Green Middle School, High Wycombe and Belmore Primary Academy, Hayes There will be opportunities to join further Work Groups later in the year and in the summer term we will be recruiting more people to train as mastery specialists. In the meantime, we have other events planned for you to find out more about mastery and begin to develop teaching for mastery. We would ask you to sign up for these other events rather than asking to visit schools in the Work Groups, who are still learning, or the Mastery specialists, who have their own workgroups to support. Should you want any further help with mastery please contact us in the first instance.

Teaching Mathematics for Mastery at KS3 We are currently selecting our Secondary Teaching for Mastery Specialists and will publish the names of the successful applicants in our next newsletter. Later in the year we will be recruiting schools to join Teaching for Mastery Workgroups using a similar model to that currently being followed by the primary schools. There is funding to support these workgroups and there will be a national recruitment process for those wishing to participate. If you would like to find out more about what Teaching for Mastery involves then you would be welcome to visit Wycombe High School who are developing a mastery curriculum at KS3 following participation in the Shanghai Exchange last year. Dates for our KS3 Teaching for Mastery Open Mornings can be found at: http://cygnustsa.co.uk/courses/details/108/BBO-Maths-Hub-Teaching-Mathematics-for-Mastery-at-KS3-Open-Mornings
Developing Reasoning at KS3 This is a national maths hub project, with funding attached, to help you develop reasoning in your classrooms to ensure your students are well-prepared for the new GCSE. Secondary Teacher Subject Specialism Training (Mathematics) Update Our first NCTL-funded, TSST (Mathematics) course, run in association with Oxford Brookes University, began in October. NCTL have funded 4 cohorts of this course to address the shortage of specialist Mathematics teachers in order to drive up the standard and attainment of pupils. We are delighted with the support that schools have given their staff to enable them to attend this vital professional development course. Our attendees got off to a flying start! All currently teaching KS3 maths, they have a wide range of backgrounds: from Psychology to Chemistry, Sports Science to Architecture. Over 12 sessions, they will be brushing up on their own maths skills as well as learning the pedagogy needed to teach maths today.
We will be running a second cohort which begins in March 2017, if you feel that teachers in your school could also benefit from this FREE training, please email mathscourses@whs.bucks.sch.uk .
Shanghai Exchange November 2016 Gill Knight from Holtspur School in Beaconsfield and Kate Reade from Whitehall Infant School In Hayes will be representing BBO Hub on this year’s Shanghai Exchange.
