Spring Term 2016 Newsletter 5 3 February 2016 Newsletter 5 - 3 February 2016 SE Region CPD Provider Network meeting - Friday 11 March This event is being hosted by Tonbridge Grammar School, Deakin Leas, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 2JR. The meeting is open to all CPD providers in the region as an opportunity to network, share experiences and update on new developments, to book a place e-mail Sarah Rose srose@sjwms.co.uk. Primary Mastery Conference Tuesday 15 March – 1.45-4.45pm at Wycombe High School This is a FREE afternoon and a great opportunity to find out more about mastery. You will learn how some of our Maths Hub partner schools are developing mastery and the benefits they are seeing. Arrival is from 1pm with an opportunity for networking over lunch. Debbie Morgan, NCETM Primary Lead will be delivering the keynote session ‘Teaching for Mastery - how do I do it?’. This will be followed be a choice of workshops led by teachers who are currently developing mastery in their classrooms; they will share their experiences and give some ideas and resources for you to take away. To book your places, up to two people per school—please e-mail mathscourses@whs.bucks.sch.uk UKMT Team Maths Challenge (TMC) for students in Y8 & 9 The UKMT are still accepting a few late entries as heats are not yet full, which includes the one at Horris Hill School in Newbury, Berkshire, on Friday 18 March 2016. For further details and to enter your team http://www.tmc.ukmt.org.uk/ Cambridge Mathematics Education Project ‘Using the resources effectively in your A level classroom’ MEI are running this FREE two day course at Wycombe High School which introduces teachers to the new Cambridge Mathematics Education Project (CMEP) on-line resources.

Day 1: Friday 4th March 2016 Day 2: Thursday 14th April 2016 Further details can be found at http://www.mei.org.uk/cmep NCETM Primary Professional Development Lead Support Programme - Save the Dates This two day course will take place on 1 March and 8 June in High Wycombe and is aimed at those practitioners who currently lead or intend to lead Professional Development in Maths. There is an interim task and successful completion of the course leads to accreditation as a PD lead by the NCETM. NCETM Secondary Professional Development Lead Support Programme This course will be run across two days, the end of April and last week of June, if we have sufficient interest. If you are delivering any training within your own school/locality, working as an independent consultant or a Maths SLE then this is an essential for you as it will lead to NCETM accreditation. Teachers' Team Mathematics Challenge – Friday 11 March You enter your students - are you up to it?! Enjoy an evening of mathematical challenge, good company and good food. Compete with and against teachers from Buckinghamshire – teams of 4 allocated randomly on the day. (You may come as a pair, but no more than 2 teachers from a school in any team.) We will be using the materials from this year’s Senior Team Mathematics Challenge Final - no cheating by looking at them, but if you're competitive you might like to look at previous years' materials, on the FMSP website here: http:// www.furthermaths.org.uk/stmc_materials This event is organised by the FMSP following a very successful event held in Oxfordshire, and is supported by the BBO Maths Hub. STEM Train/Return to Teach Event – Monday 8 February 6-8pm at Wycombe High School If you have any unqualified Maths Teachers or know of any maths graduates who are interested in training to become a teacher please do send them along to the event. We will also be running a workshop to outline our bespoke programme to help qualified teachers return to the classroom. So if you know of any potential trainees or returners please do direct them to the event details http://www.whs.bucks.sch.uk/402/about-whs/teacher-training FREE FMSP enrichment sessions in your school The FMSP will visit your school and offer an enrichment session to your Y10 students. Each session will include a short explanation of why studying maths beyond GCSE is important and demonstrate how maths is used in everyday situations and lasts for about an hour. Students will receive a workbook with additional tasks which they can tackle in the next lesson if the teacher desires. All the materials used will be left in school so other teachers can use them with their classes. You will get the most benefit if other teachers can also watch this lesson – a free CPD opportunity! Examples of sessions are:  Logistics: this session looks at the day to day running of delivery and supply companies in terms of finding the shortest routes to transport goods.  Winning Games: this session looks at how to win, why you sometimes can’t win and the strategies to employ. Subject Knowledge Development for Secondary Maths NQTs Tracing a topic from KS1 – KS5 - Friday 12 February 2016 9.30am-3.30pm This day will focus on how a topic develops over time and how deep knowledge and understanding of this will support your planning, the students’ learning and your teaching. Areas covered will include: development of a topic, medium term planning and ‘How would you teach in Yr 7 to support learning in year 11?’ Planning good and outstanding maths lessons— Friday 29 April 2016 9.30am-3.30pm This day will focus on a range of issues to consider when planning to support pupils’ learning. Areas covered will include: choice of examples, main teaching points, questions to ask, range of activities.
