Summer Term 2016 Newsletter 7 20 April 2016 Newsletter 7 - 20 April 2016 I hope you have all had an enjoyable Easter Holiday and are feeling refreshed and ready for all the events we have planned for you this term. As you will know the Maths Hub Programme was set up and funding guaranteed for two years. At the end of last term, we were told that the Maths Hub Programme would continue for at least another year and funding for 2016-17 was confirmed last week at the same level as the current year. We are delighted that we can continue to work with you to support and improve the mathematics education of young people across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire. Raising Participation in Mathematics post-16 This is a ‘must read’ for secondary teachers……… http://www.furthermaths.org.uk/files/FMSP-Girls-in-Maths.pdf Early Years Foundation Stage Network Meeting – 4pm on Tuesday 26th April at 4pm at Holtspur School, Beaconsfield Gill Knight is leading this first session for all those colleagues interested in Mathematics Teaching in EYFS. One of the topics for discussion is how the Hub can support the development of Mathematics teaching in the Early Years. We intend to set up an EYFS workgroup next year to support teachers with the professional development and resources which will make a difference. Feedback from primary teachers tells us that this phase is often overlooked so please help us redress the balance. Please email Gill Knight if you wish to attend GKnight@holtspurschool.co.uk Teaching Mathematics for Mastery (Primary) It was a pleasure to meet so many of you at our Primary Mastery conference at the end of last term. Please email to confirm attendance so we can order the appropriate amount of refreshments, and our reception staff will know who to expect. Due to popularity we are restricting participants to a maximum of 3 per school.

Primary Team Maths Challenge – Monday 4th July - all day event at Wycombe High School The challenge is for teams of four Year 6 students who will be involved in a variety of Maths activities and challenges. Each team will need to be accompanied by an adult, this does not have to be a teacher but should be someone who is happy to help mark answers to the different rounds and supervise your own team and another team during the course of the whole day. Resourced by the United Kingdom Maths Trust who provide some excellent materials and run along the lines of the UKMT KS3 challenges which are very successful and regularly over-subscribed, the day should provide some healthy competition for your able mathematicians. To secure a team place please e-mail mathscourses@whs.bucks.sch.uk with the names of your four students and their accompanying adult, giving details of any medical conditions that we should be aware of. Please also note that we may wish to take photographs or videos of the event for publicity purposes, as the event is being hosted by the BBO Maths Hub and sponsored by the UKMT. Please advise us in your e-mail if this presents any problems with your students. We have spaces for 25 teams, allocated on a first come first served basis with complete details emailed. As with the other events we run, if any secondary Maths teams are interested in coming along for the day with a view to running a similar event in their own area, please do email us at the same address. Advanced Mathematics Teaching in Early Career If you or any of your team are early in their careers and planning to teach some A level Mathematics next year or hope to at some point in the future, do sign up to this free certificated 3-day course at UCL Institute of Education in the summer. There are two parallel courses to choose from, as per the attached flyer. IoE has been funded by the DfE to develop these courses, and they have had a very positive reception. Places are on a first-come, first-served basis, and are open to trainee or beginner teachers who have completed not more than two years from QTS. The courses are a mix of deeper ways of thinking about A Level content (including for the 2017 A Level), and developing pedagogy appropriate for 16-18 year olds.
