An afternoon of professional development for Maths NQTs and trainee teachers—Friday 24 June This course will run from 2pm – 5pm at Wycombe High School and will be split into three discrete one hour sessions. Whilst it would be advisable to attend all three sessions, it would be possible to attend one or two of them. There is no charge for this event. Refreshments will be provided. Session 1: Spaced Learning - Looking into the use of Spaced Learning in a classroom as a learning and teaching method used to embed large amounts of information into our long term memories. Ideal for use in the classroom where there is a large volume of content to cover. Session 2: Challenging Negativity in Mathematics - Investigating what the issues are facing teachers of mathematics and how these attitudes are formed. The session will provide practical ideas on how to promote mathematics within the clasroom, across the school and to parents. Session 3: When Will I Ever Need Maths? - This session will explore the use of problem solving with real-life contexts. The session will cover how this approach benefits students and ideas on how to implement it in the classroom. To reserve a place, please e-mail mathscourses@whs.bucks.sch.uk with the subject heading Maths Professional Development. PRIMARY OPPORTUNITIES Primary schools have already been notified by email of the following opportunities which have been advertised through the NCETM. We hope that some of you who have been involved in the mastery projects to date will apply to take part in the Mastery Specialists Programme. A number of schools have expressed an interest in developing mastery in their own schools and by participating in a workgroup you will have an excellent and funded opportunity to do this. Schools who have been working with a Mastery Specialist this year, may be able to continue but will need to submit an application for consideration. Primary teachers and primary schools sought to take forward teaching for mastery: two separate recruitment opportunities: We’ve announced details of the recruitment of a second wave of teachers to become specialists in mastery approaches to teaching primary mathematics. 140 primary teachers will be selected to join the Mastery Specialists Programme, run by the NCETM in conjunction with Maths Hubs. Each Maths Hub will select four teachers to take part in the development phase of the programme during 2016/2017, following in the footsteps of the same number recruited a year ago.
Information about this second wave of recruitment and the application form can be found here. The closing date for returning applications to the NCETM is 1 June 2016. Continued on page 2 ...

At the same time, details of a separate process led by Maths Hubs, have been announced, to recruit primary schools to work with the first wave of Mastery Specialists, who are now approaching the end of their development year. In 2016/2017, each of the Mastery Specialists will work with six schools in his/her Maths Hub area, to develop teaching for mastery approaches in those schools. This is a significant opportunity for the professional development of teachers in these schools, for which there will be no charge. In addition, a small subsidy will be available towards release time for these teachers. Each group of six schools will form a Work Group as part of the wider Maths Hub programme of teaching for mastery activities. Information and details of how to apply to take part in this valuable collaborative school development opportunity can be found here. Applications must be returned to your Maths Hub by 8 June 2016.

We still have space for 5 more school to take part in this event. If you would like to take part, please e-mail mathscourses@whs.bucks.sch.uk with the names of your four students and their accompanying adult, giving details of any medical conditions that we should be aware of.
