Staff Success

On Saturday 11 March Mrs Clare Penzer-Williams competed in the UKCAU Cross Country Championships. It was a gruelling 5mile race across grass and mud...lots of mud! So much in fact she lost her shoe at mile three! She ended up coming 3rd in Bucks (195th overall)! She thoroughly enjoyed the experience but thinks she is more suited to the safety of the road and pavements! Mrs Penzer-Williams is running her first ever marathon on Sunday 2 April and is fundraising for the Play Your Part for Sport campaign. Please support her efforts by donating to her JustGiving page here: http://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ClarePenzer2

Four of our students; Hannah Leeper (Y9 C10), Elizabeth Hollis (Y9 N5), Alex Hollis (Y10 N7) and Victoria Gothard (Y10 T7) recently competed in the Regional Rowing Trials for their respective age categories, hoping to qualify for the Junior InterRegional Regatta in Nottingham. Their results are admirable, with the WJ14 (Y9) Quad finishing in second place! In addition, Elizabeth also rowed in a Double, placing a respectable fourth place. Alex and Victoria rowed in a Four and a Quad in the WJ15 (Y10) category, placing first in both events and qualifying to go to Nottingham in April. Further rowing success is to be celebrated, as Alex also won in the single event, which she will also be competing in at the Inter-Regional Regatta. These results place Maidenhead Rowing Club's Year 10 as the best in their region! An excellent weekend for our Maidenhead rowers!

U15 Squash FIVE IN A ROW! The WHS U15 Squash team qualified for the National Schools Finals for the fifth consecutive year! The finals were held in Manchester’s National Squash Centre on Tuesday 21 March and comprised the top eight schools that had qualified from around the country. The first match was against Gosforth Academy from Newcastle. Emma Bassett (Y8 A4) and Gina Mullis (Y9 N9) won their matches 3-0, but with Kassia Goosen (Y8 A2) and Abbie Sumner (Y10 B5) losing, it was all down to the final tie! Hannah Krasner (Y10 A9) lost the first game 1113 but stormed back to win 3-1 overall. And so on to the semis… Hymers College from Yorkshire, their top player is ranked number three in England. Kassia and Emma put the team two ties ahead, but the remaining three couldn’t quite pull off what would have been an astonishing ahievement! So we only just missed out 3-2. The third and fourth play off was against our friends at Tring School, with the British number 1 in their team. The result 4-1 going to them. So we have matched our position from last year, a fabulous fourth in the country!

Hockey

This year the U12 squad have had the best turnout at training, with over 40 girls turning up to train and play every week, this has meant that we have been able to play A,B&C Teams this year. The A & B teams have had a good season in the league with the B team winning 4/6 league games, and the A team placing 4th in the In 2 Hockey Schools Tournament. The U13 squad have fully committed to training and as a result have had another very successful year! The A team won three, drew one of their six league games and placed 6th at the District Tournament. The B Team won four, drew one of their five league games and placed 3rd at the District Tournament. The U14 team have also had a great season winning one game, drawing two and only losing once. The U16 team have had a good season both indoor and out. They played in the National Schools indoor competition this year, receiving training from Scottish and GB international Emily Maguire and reached the South Finals where they played some outstanding hockey. Outdoors the team won all their fixtures, continuing to show strength and depth in their play. They had some great matches and showed us just how much they have progressed as players and as a team this season, finishing in 2nd place. Well done girls, with your indoor achievement earlier on this year, you really have had a great season!

Volleyball 11 WHS girls will be competing for South Bucks Volleyball in the U15 Divisional Tournament in Bournemouth on Saturday 25 March. They won their regional round after an amazing last match 25-23 (where they came back from 18-23 down) and won 15-13 in the tie breaker. Such a nail biter! We will be keeping an eye on the event and hope Maya Reid-Cain (Y10 N5), Sian Hoare (Y9 P1), Olivia Walter (Y9 P9), Zoe Glover (Y9 A8), Milly Crosby (Y8 P6), Isabelle Tucker (Y8 C4), Hannah Erstad (Y8, A9), Tamryn Bailey (Y8 A1), Lily Bowen (Y8 A10), Lily Burniston (Y8 B2) and Heather McLintock (Y8 A10), all have a great day. Who knows, they could win and progress to the National Finals. An amazing achievement after only one year of volleyball!

Highlights

Once again the biannual highlights show did not disappoint; with an extraordinary breadth of pieces ranging from elegant lyrical dances to explosive gymnastics work. Yet again the girls did not fail to captivate the audience and deliver a show to remember.

The pure talent involved was outstanding with such a large number of Spotlight pieces that they had to be split into two separate halves. Every dance involved in these pieces was carefully choreographed, with hours of work going into the production and refinement of dances. There were many group routines performed by all years incorporating: Junior Dance, Senior Dance and Dance Performance Groups. Again the talent and range of styles exceeded expectations, with not just lyrical pieces but also: contemporary, jazz, hip-hop and even an Irish dance called ‘Dathannach’, choreographed by Miss McKeever.

‘Pedal 4 a Pitch’ Fundraising Appeal Results

Sunday 19 March saw the next event in our ‘Play Your Part for Sport’ campaign come to fruition. We were very fortunate to have had the support of The Eden Shopping Centre and Anytime Fitness. This allowed us to set up four spin bikes in a prime location in the town centre of High Wycombe and pedal for our target, 500 miles, the distance from High Wycombe to our twin city Kelkheim in Germany.

Staff, students, parents and families turned out in full force, participants were sponsored to take part in the mammoth mission and signed up to 15 minute slots, cycling continuously from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm. High Wycombe residents and Eden customers supported us very generously and welcomed the pitch development to the local area. Sponsorship money and donations have totalled over £1,400 and that number is growing! Thanks to each and every one of you for your support!

Sponsor A Square

‘Sponsor a Square’ is continuing to help raise money for our pitches with £10,000 raised to date.

The final performance of the night was the much anticipated Global Rock, this year’s theme was The Aboriginal Colonisation. The large team of girsl working on the piece were able to capture the harsh living environment of the time whilst at the same time giving the audience a beautiful theatrical dance.

We encourage families to purchase a square in honour of your daughters, the family, or a friend of the family. If you run a local business, work in a large corporation or know of someone who does, you can purchase a square or two in the company’s name which is a great opportunity to advertise at the new facility. Squares range in price from £50 to £725. http:// www.whs.bucks.sch.uk/PlayYourPart

This year we have challenged each tutor group to raise £50 to sponsor a square. 11 out of 60 tutor groups have purchased a square so far. Please encourage your daughter to either contribute £2.00 to her Tutor or help organise a fundraising event for her Tutor Group. Thank you for your support.
