SPORTS DAY 2018 Media Team Report

Results!

The following report was written by Alina Khan (Y8) who made up part of the Sports Daty media team. On Tuesday 10 July 2018, Wycombe High School hosted their annual sports day. This year the theme was The Commonwealth Games in Australia. The day began with the opening ceremony, featuring Year 7’s and 10’s. There was a samba band parading the 100m track; flags of countries in the Commonwealth made by the Year 10’s; the tradition of the Year 7’s sprinting the 100m track with house coloured mascots and balloons; the Hakka dance also performed by the Year 10’s and lastly the cheerleaders well-prepared routine. The enthusiasm and spirit of the house captains, staff and students was shown at this point, with their house coloured clothing and makeup. The opening ceremony, started a whole day filled with a range of competitive sports and events. This ignited excitement and enthusiasm, particularly for the 1500m run. The tension of the 100m and 200m events, where everything can change in a second, had everyone cheering and being very supportive. Some other events included: discus, shot-put, javelin, hurdles, relay and the boomerang throw, fitness relay and the kangaroo hop which were this year’s themed events.

Fundraising

Throughout the day, Mr Mackerras did the commentary and music, keeping everyone entertained! This year there was a charity village which was selling baked goods, WHS merchandise, house coloured accessories ice-cream and refreshments. We had time to spend time with our friends and classmates through sports and appreciated the work our P.E teachers and the staff put in, to make Sports Day happen.

New for Sports Day this year was the introduction of the ‘Charity Village’ where the Development Ambassadors and House Charities set up stalls to raise funds to equip the all-weather pitch and top up House Charities fundraising for the year. We encouraged students to bring in small amounts of change to purchase drinks, sweets, homemade cakes, ice lollies and drinks for the House Charities which helped to raise £667.38 for our six local and international charities. The Development Ambassadors were also on hand selling branded merchandise and House coloured bandanas along with a face painting stall complete with House mascot templates. We are pleased to report the Development Ambassadors raised £596 on the day bringing the total amount raised this year to £5,714 - a record year for Development Ambassadors.
