SUPPORTING CHILD’S development
There are two sets of illustrated cards in the box. The pictures present people showing different feelings: happiness, contentment, peacefulness, anger, fear, surprise, shame, sadness. One set shows emotions occurring in specific situations (during an argument or a joyful playtime, before a painful injection). The images from the other set can be interpreted only by reading the facial expressions. On the reverse of each card, there are emoticons which explain the feelings in a simplified way. While playing with the cards, children are to name the different emotions. Kids can also emphasize what made the riddles easy to figure out, discuss where the feelings come from and whether we need them. “Emotion” can be an excellent introduction to a conversation on different ways of expressing feelings.

Funny picture stories for kidS
SUPPORTING CHILD’S development
Zabawne opowiadania obrazkowe dla dzieci illustrated by Gill Chelski
10
This publication is meant for small children that can’t read on their own yet, but it may be useful for older kids with developmental disabilities as well. First, the child focuses on a story consisting of four pictures and tells what is happening on each of them. Then a teacher/parent/therapist can proceed with questions. There are examples in the book, but the questions can also be invented by the adult who works with the child. By observing the events and changes that occur in the pictures, the child learns about casual connections, and has the chance to analyse and conclude. Doing the task is also a great lesson of distinguishing the facts from fiction, and of storytelling – an important skill which should be practised from the moment the child starts combining nouns, verbs and adjectives to make sentences.

This book is meant for preschoolers and school-aged kids who are just starting to learn addition to 20. The method presented in “Addition to 20...” is based on counting and adding some sets of specific objects, followed by gradual moving from concrete to abstract. During the more advanced stage, a child is provided with pips on the faces of dice instead of objects. The child first reads a mathematical operation at the bottom of the page, than looks for two fields (which meet horizontally or vertically) corresponding to the components of the operation. The child, then, should draw a loop around the objects in the fields and count the elements or calculate the result in his/her head. The loop should be drawn with the same colour that was used for the mathematical operation. The same colour should be used for completing the operation below.
