Editor’s Note: Move with Music I still haven’t come up with a running resolution or running goal this year, but I have been keeping up with my training. I’m slowly building up my endurance again by running four times a week. I’ve always found difficulty in concentrating on my workout. I seem to become bored easily with my run. But, lately my music choices have been helping. Spotify has a bunch of premade playlists in the workout category. I rotate through songs from a handful of those playlists to create my ultimate list. I’m not the only one who uses music to pump up a workout. According to Active.com, listening to music during a workout compared to no music during a workout has shown improvements in duration and strength. Researchers from England’s Lincoln University completed a study in 2004 where volunteers completed a muscular endurance task. The volunteers selected their own music and those listening to music were able to complete the task for a “significantly longer” period of time than those

without music. Athletes don’t only use music during practices or training. Many high school teams have warm-up playlists blasting before games. It’s shown to boost energy and I know personally there are some songs that just scream motivation and make me not want to quit. If you don’t listen to music while working out, try it! I really think that’s what pushes me through a run or workout. There are certain songs listed below that really pump me up and get me focused. Here’s my most recent workout playlist:

Senior Spotlight: Dominic Hockenbury By Ellen Hoffman

For Lake-Lehman senior, Dominic Hockenbury, running is equivalent to brushing his teeth. The cross country and track standout sets running as part of his daily routine. “It’s something I do every morning. For me it’s important to get into that routine every day.” The four-time State Champion is looking to end his high school career at the top. He’s secured State Championships twice in track and twice in cross country. He’s looking to add a few additional titles to his long list of achievements before he’s a Black Knight alum. “I’m looking to defend some State Titles and possibly break some records,” he said with a smile. “I’d just really like to end high school on a good note and get prepared for college.” Hockenbury is taking his running skills to Syracuse University this fall to compete along side members of the current National Champion cross country team. “When I was looking at schools at first for running I was focused on Colorado, Oregon schools that are just these staple running colleges on the other side of the country,” he said. “But, recently Syracuse has risen from being not known for running and now it’s one of the top colleges in the country for running. They have the ability to take the kids that maybe weren’t the top recruits for cross country and make them in to the top runners in the country.” He chose Syracuse after taking four official NCAA visits. He liked that Syracuse was close enough to have visitors but far enough away to be on his own. Hockenbury is also prepared for the academic aspect of his collegiate career. “They had a great balance between running and academics, which is what I wanted.” Hockenbury is excited to train and compete with the Syracuse team. After his freshman year of high school he didn’t have a partner dedicated to train with unless some of his friends from college came home for a weekend. “My thing is if I’m around people who are faster than me eventually I’ll get to my level.” Running for Hockenbury is a three-season sport. The State Champion competes in cross country and both indoor and outdoor track. During the winter months he says he runs anywhere from 60 to 70 miles a week where in the summer he bumps it up to just

Full turf infield for team defenses, base running, pitching, fielding, catching and practices. around 90 miles every seven days. This is about the same as to what he’ll see while at Syracuse, but with an increased speed. “Naturally I’ll get faster and it’ll be easier running with people at a faster pace. That will be something I haven’t done in a long time.” When he first committed to running during his freshman year of high school, he didn’t know what to expect as far as training and building endurance. “I never really trained or really realized what goes in to long distance running,” he said. “I was thinking the race is 1.86 miles so I’ll just run a mile or two but gradually I became more informed and added on to my mileage until I got where I am now.” Hockenbury said he never expected to come this far in his running career. The high school senior grew up playing baseball and ice hockey but found he always enjoyed the training aspect of those sports more than the sport itself. “I always knew in training for baseball and ice hockey that I was good at running and I enjoyed that, actually,” he said. “So when I went out for running it was a natural fit.” Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2016 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level.
