Editor’s Note: Better Body Bootcamp 2.0 A few months ago I signed up for Better Body Bootcamp at Leverage Fitness Studio. Now, I’m close to finishing my third Bootcamp. Crazy! I didn’t even want to sign up for this and now I’m on week 15. The sessions vary in length, some lasting four weeks and others lasting six. Prior to the six week session they started offering measurements the morning of the first day. I was excited about this but nervous I wouldn’t see many results. Well, after the six week session I went in for measurements and lost two inches on my waist! Did not expect that. I think the measurements really help to motivate. You don’t want to be the one that gains five pounds or adds inches to places you don’t want them. Thankfully, they kept this going for the session following. The classes have been varying now that the weather is nicer. The trainers have been incorporating more cardio – like laps around the building! While that’s definitely tough and I moan and groan when they

send us outside, I like that it mixes it up and gets us outdoors. Now that I’ve been going to these classes for a few months, I’ve even started coordinating these exercises into days off or days I have to miss Bootcamp. It’s helpful having done the exercises so many times because I remember more things I can do when I’m working out away from Leverage. For instance, I was out of town for a few days but managed to get to the gym and remembered a bunch of different Bootcamp things to do. Before Bootcamp I maybe would have done some of these exercise but definitely not enough or challenged myself with weights. Overall, if someone is looking for a new workout routine, I’d recommend this. Bootcamp has definitely opened my eyes to different ways to work out and that sticking to the same exercises or doing the same thing on the treadmill isn’t always going to bring you results. You’ve got to mix it up!

Senior Spotlight: Matt Bean By Ellen Hoffman

While many think of swimming as an individual sport, Wyoming Seminary’s Matt Bean is the first to say otherwise. “People are really amazed when they hear how close we are as a team,” he said. “You go into swimming thinking it’s going to be an individual event and the focus is on you, but it’s much more than that.” Bean is proud of his Blue Knights team and the growth they’ve seen over the last four years. As a captain his junior and senior years, Bean credits his team and coaches for the success he and the team have had, especially during the 2017 season. “I think what it comes down to is a fantastic team and exceptional coaching. We can’t do what we do on an individual basis so we support one another and all the hard work that goes into it.” Both the boys and girls teams at Wyoming Seminary won the District 2 Class 2A titles this year, which Bean says is a testament to the work they’ve put in. “We’ve seen an amazing growth of the team over my four years here,” he said. “If you position it where we were freshman year and where we are now it really shows the growth we’ve had as a team.” This hard work and dedication has helped to land Bean a spot on the American University Division 1 Patriot League swimming team starting fall of this year. Bean knew swimming would always be part of his life, whether he continued at the collegiate level or not. But after discovering American University for its academics, he looked into the swimming program and everything worked out. “I knew I’d always keep swimming as a part of my life no matter what. Once I was accepted into American and realized that they’re at the Division 1 level and realized what this was going to be like, I was very excited.” Bean will train throughout the summertime and start competing as an Eagle in December of this year. “Once I get there I’m excited to see what happens and I’m looking forward to it.” He plans to major in business and is excited

to see the academic side of things as well as the time he’ll spend in the pool. As his senior year comes to a close, he’s excited for the next chapter in his life, but will miss the friends he’s made throughout his four years at Wyoming Seminary. “Every senior looks forward to graduation,” he said. “It’s bittersweet leaving. I’m excited for the future but I’ve had so many great memories here that I’ll definitely cherish for a long time.” Bean has competed on relay teams that have broken both school and personal records. At seasons’s end he had set records in the 200 medley relay and helped the team win a sixth place medal at State competition in the 400 free relay. Individually he’s won two District Championships in the 100 back and this year placed 14th at States with a personal record in the 100 back. Bean says he prefers backstroke to fly because overall he thinks he performs better in the backstroke. While his team has been a huge part of the Blue Knights’ success, so has the coaching staff. Bean says Coach Mercatili is “hands down the best coach I’ve ever had.” Bean grew up outside of the Wyoming Valley and moved here from Connecticut prior to his freshman year when his dad accepted a new job. He’s happy where his high school career took him and what the future holds. Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2017 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level. TIME OUT with Frank Lauri By Ellen Hoffman Players, coaches, fans, parents love photos. They capture moments they’ll never want to forget – making the winning basket, or dumping Gatorade on the winning coach. Wyoming Valley Sport Shot photographer Frank Lauri has been a sports photographer in the Wyoming Valley for almost two decades. Lauri fills us in on some of his most memorable sports photography moments and what events he’s still looking to cover. When/how did you start with sports photography? I received my first “point & shoot” digital camera, a Kodak DC260, in 1999 and I was President of a local Little League, which was my start in sports photography. From there I followed my three sons in the sports they played – baseball, football, swimming, basketball, soccer, track and just took photos for my own enjoyment. In 2007 the New York Yankees moved their Triple A team to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. I contacted the organization hoping to get

Most memorable local sporting event? I was the SWB Yankees photographer during Roger Clemens’ rehab assignment in 2007. The game was sold out and traffic on I-81 was a nightmare. Security and law enforcement were all over the place and there were wall to wall photographers from just about every major newspaper. We were all packed into the photo wells at first and third base. The atmosphere at PNC Field was buzzing with excitement – fans yelling, screaming and booing. This was my first time shooting an event like that.

credentials to shoot a few games. Soon after, I was asked to shoot an event at the stadium, which turned out to be a great success and I was asked to be the team photographer, which I did until 2013. Later I began shooting for The Citizens’Voice and eight years later I’m still going. In 2009 I became the photographer for King’s College, covering all of their sports programs. And in 2014 I started shooting for Wyoming Valley Sport Shot. Favorite sport to shoot? It has to be lacrosse because it is peak action from the start of the game to the end of the game. Biggest sporting event you’ve covered? There are actually two events. One was when the SWB Yankees were playing the Durham Bulls for the Governor’s Cup, which is the Triple A equivalent of the World Series. The other would be games during the Little League World Series. I

Photo submitted by Frank Lauri

spent many years involved with Little League as a coach, board member, League President and then as a photographer. When the opportunity was presented to shoot Little League on its biggest and most prestigious stage, I couldn’t say no. These kids are so good at playing the game and then you think they are only 12 or 13 years old.

Most challenging aspect of sports photography? This can be several things. Sometimes there are physical demands associated with sports photography. At the youth, high school and some college, moving up and down the sidelines during field sports carrying 20 pounds of gear can be challenging. Lighting is always a challenge mostly for night games and indoors for

swimming, basketball and wrestling. Weather is definitely a challenge as well. If you aren’t prepared for yourself and your gear for the heat, cold, rain or snow you may not be successful in getting your shots. Sport you’d like to shoot but haven’t had the opportunity? Boxing and MMA – not that I want to see injury to anyone, but the fact is they will be getting hit in the face with fists and feet. I know it sounds gory, but that’s one of the shots I want to add to my portfolio yet. Advice for aspiring sports photographers? I had the pleasure of mentoring and being a guest speaker to high school students who were on a scholarship with a local organization called Social Fabric Collective. Some of the things I emphasized were know the capabilities of your gear, getting it right in camera with white balance and exposure and practicing.
