Editor’s Note: Recreational Softball A few months ago my friend approached me about a recreational softball team he was putting together. It’s a co-ed league that runs throughout the summertime and he asked if I’d be interested in playing. To be honest my first thought was, “Can I even play softball?” I played throughout elementary and middle school but it was very relaxed and I haven’t picked up a bat since then. So, my first reaction was apprehension. But, I agreed. It was months away, I had time to practice. Well this past Sunday was our first game. I didn’t try on my glove (my dad’s old glove from when he coached my elementary school team) until two hours before the game. Thankfully, it fit. My dad tossed the ball back and forth with me before I left for the game and I was thinking, “OK I’ve got this.” I get to the Kingston Rec Center Field and there is already a game going on. The first pitch I watch gets hit toward the fences. Immediately I was wondering what I had gotten myself in to. Thankfully, I meet some of the other girls on the team and
they’re just as nervous as I am and we kind of band together to get through this first game. We take the field (I’m in right field, thankfully) and I make it through the first half of the inning without contact with the ball. This isn’t so bad! The innings progress on and finally I’m up to bat. The first pitch that comes my way is the first pitch I’ve been dealt since sixth grade. Somehow I make contact! I’m out at first but a teammate of mine advances to third and the next at bat brings him home. This isn’t so bad! What I’m getting at here is: take a chance, even if it’s scary. It could turn in to something really fun! While I’m sure not all games will go as smoothly as our first, I feel more confident taking the field now and overall I had a lot of fun with my friends. I was super apprehensive about this leading up to the moment I took the field, but I gave it a shot and am looking forward to our next game. The goal is to make it on base!

Senior Spotlight: Emily Johns By Ellen Hoffman
As a sophomore, Lake-Lehman’s Emily Johns shattered the District 2 records for the discus throw. Her throw marked 148-6, beating the previous District 2 Class AAA record by 13 feet. Needless to say, the thrower had hefty goals for her remaining two seasons as a Black Knight. Unfortunately, her junior year was cut short by injury. During a morning practice, on her first throw of the day, she tore a ligament in her foot. This injury eliminated her for the remainder of her junior year and even throughout the summeritme she was unable to train. “I had to ease back into it, especially the throws you’re very much on the ball of your foot and turning, which put a lot of pressure on that ligament. So I really had to take baby steps with my training and just slowly get back into it.” Prior to injury, Johns started working on her lifts at NEPA CrossFit in Plains. What started as another training pattern turned into another sport. “The lifting directly correlates to the throws, kind of the power aspect of them,” she said. “I was really just looking to train for throwing and I ended up finding an avenue through that.” Johns ended up competing in the 2015 USA Weightlifting Youth Nationals in Minnesota – and won. After that run, she shifted her focus back to throwing and track, keeping her time at NEPA CrossFit just for training. Due to sophomore year injury, her senior season is that much more meaningful. She has her sights set on beating those records she set during her sophomore year to really end her high school career as best she can. “This year my personal bests are all from my sophomore year,” she said. “So I’m really looking to better those and get better overall from that point just because I had such a major set back after my junior year.” With District competition coming up this month, Johns is looking to break another record.
Since beating the Class AAA record as a sophomore, Lake-Lehman has been moved to the Class AA classification. Johns is looking to better her personal record, but also break another District record. Her injury didn’t set her back in plans for the future. Johns was contacted by all eight Ivy League schools for her athletic and academic abilities. From there, she narrowed her choices and ultimately decided on Harvard. “When I was on campus I got to do the 48 hours and see what I liked about it, what I didn’t and it gave me a good feel of the school itself. I really liked the coach at Harvard. I love the campus. The academic programs are exactly what I wanted, so everything really fit when I was there,” Johns said. At Harvard, Johns is looking forward to the higher level of training she’ll receive. “I’m looking to hone in my technic and have someone always be there to critique me,” she said. “I go to practice now and I don’t always get the best feedback just because I am throwing at a bit of a higher level. So I’m really happy that I’ll be able to get constant constructive criticism and feedback about what I’m doing.” Still in her senior year at Lake-Lehman, Johns is looking forward to competing again in Districts, something she hasn’t done since spring 2015. Overall, she says what she’ll miss most about this level of play is the team. “I’m sure I’ll have my own family at Harvard but I’ll definitely miss my Lehman track family.” Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2017 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level. TIME OUT with Matt Green By Ellen Hoffman Matt Green began his personal fitness journey as a high school and college student. Now, he’s helping others as a personal trainer at Vive Health & Fitness in Kingston. As the weather gets warmer and everyone wants to work on getting their “summer body”, Green talks about what helps him stay motivated all year round – his clients.
and conditioning coach from football at Misericordia University. We were doing some serious training and I immediately fell in love with it. I started viewing exercises completely different and wanted to learn as much as I possibly could to improve myself as an athlete and also help as many people as I could change their lives for the better.
When & how did you get involved in personal training? I became a Certified Personal Trainer in 2012. For the longest time I always had the concept tucked in the back of my head, but I never really pursued it. I started working out when I was 16-yearsold because I was a huge fan of The Rock and wrestling on TV. I wanted to be him so badly. So, I started hitting the gym and became semiconscious of my nutrition. It wasn’t until I was about 20-years-old where I became very serious about my nutrition and my workout routines. The main driver was my strength
What do you recommend for someone who is just getting back into the fitness game? My recommendation for someone who is trying to jump-start their fitness game is to not spread yourself too thin. It’s great that you want to get healthier, but don’t commit to working out six days a week and eat nothing but salads. Take baby steps for the next few weeks and get into a sustainable routine. Become aware of your diet and start to remove the bad foods little by little. Same concept goes for the gym. Get used to being sore and implement proper form with the basic exercises.
from a very monitored nutrition plan and proper exercise.

What’s one question you get asked all the time? “How do I get abs?” My response is three words, “You have them.” Abs are a muscle, you have them, I have them, your dog has them. Abs are part of the human anatomy. The question everybody means is, “How do I get defined abs?” That comes
What motivates you & keeps you interested in helping others pursue their goals? My motivation is what I see every day in the world. People are in wheelchairs, people are in hospitals. The gift of health is a precious thing that most people take for granted. I am incredibly thankful that I am able to walk on my own and kick my own butt in the gym with no assistance from tubes, machines or medicine. When it comes to my clients, they’re my motivation to keep doing what I do. I seriously love every single one of my clients. They appreciate the passion I have for personal training and they continue to come back even when I leave them sweating on the floor in the fetal position. My clients are so down to Earth and keep my job interesting at all times that staying motivated to train them is so easy.
Biggest fitness myth you’ve heard and you want to bust? The biggest myth that I would love to de-bunk right now are detoxes. Teas, pills, potions, lotions are all money making schemes. If you want to “detox” (I even hate using that word), you should drink a ton of water. That is literally all you need to flush your body out of any harmful toxins. Do you have a motivational message you live by? My motivational message that I repeat to myself every day is, “Be better than yesterday.” If I can be just .0001% better than where I was yesterday, then I am taking a step in the right direction. I refuse to ever be okay with where I am in life. It’s great to be proud of how far you’ve come, but the second we become complacent with ourselves, that’s where we usually fall into the trap of plateaus and just metaphorically running in place.
