Editor’s Note: Stick to Those New Year’s Resolutions January is easily the busiest time for gyms. After a season of eating, drinking and being merry, many sign up or renew their memberships at the start of the New Year. But, the gym always seems to quiet down by the end of winter, many giving up on their New Year’s Resolutions. I think the problem here is that people are setting unrealistic goals for themselves and after a month or two of trying find it too difficult and quit. If you’re setting a Resolution for a healthier 2017, here are some tips to get you started. Be Realistic Looking to start running again? Don’t make it your resolution to start running in just a few weeks if you’ve been on the couch the past few months. Take it slow and set your goal as something you can attain over time, not immediately. Find a Buddy It’s harder to back out of a committment if someone else is relying on you. This has definitely

worked for me in the past. Last year I wanted to start taking an exercise class at a local gym and knew I wouldn’t go alone. So, I asked a friend to join me. Having her counting on me made it hard for me to skip out just because I was tired or didn’t feel like going. Track your Progress As you all know, I started using a FitBit in early 2016 and I can without a doubt say this helps motivate me. By setting a daily step goal of 10,000 steps, I want to hit that every day. If I’m only at a few thousand for the day, I’m more motivated to get to the gym and hit my goal. FitBit also has daily or weekly challenges that you and your friends can participate in together. This also helps because you don’t want to be the slacker of the group! Stick to It Experts say it takes about 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and six months for it to become part of your personality. It won’t happen overnight, so be persistent and patient!

TIME OUT with Derrick Simms By Ellen Hoffman Wyoming Valley West Class of 2013 graduate Derrick Simms was an All-Star athlete, contributing to both the football and wrestling teams throughout his high school career. Simms benefitted from the different coaching staffs he was able to learn from as a high school athlete. Now, as the assistant wrestling coach at WVW, he hopes he can help these high school athletes grow, just like he did. How did you become interested in wrestling? One of my very first memories was when my brother and I were wrestling in the living room of our house and broke pretty much everything in our path. Once we were both old enough to join our father said, “That’s it! You’re both joining wrestling, that way you can wrestle all you want but somewhere other than our living room.” I guess you can say I have been interested in wrestling for as long as I can remember.

What made you interested in coaching? My father, George Simms, always coached Wyoming Valley West’s football team. Growing up, I always wanted to be included and be out there on the field so I would work as the water boy. I used to love watching the passion and dedication my father had towards bettering the lives of those he taught. I knew even back then that one day I wanted to coach so I could help the kids better themselves and show them the same passion and dedication I saw in my father. What do you hope to instill in your players? Maybe something you took away from one of your coaches? Throughout my life I always had a great motivator, my older brother George Simms. Of course I always wanted to be just like him so we were in constant competition in basically everything. George wanted

and motivate them to always work harder and never give up on themselves. In life, you get out what you put in and I want the best possible outcomes and opportunities for all of our wrestlers.

Photo submitted by Derrick Simms

me to better myself instead of just beat me in the small competitions we had. He always taught me to run faster, jump higher and to go the distance. Most importantly, he taught me to never stop trying to improve myself because you can always be better. If nothing else, I hope to show the team this same mentality

Tell me about a time this season when you knew coaching the Spartans was the right place for you? I knew coming back to my Alma Mater was the right decision the second I walked through the wrestling room doors and saw my old coach Fuzzy, Bill O’Rourke. I felt back at home and extremely honored to be there following in the footsteps of some great previous coaches who I have had the honor of meeting. One word that describes your coaching technique. Aggressive. During matches, I always have a notebook and pen in my hand. Throughout the length of the

match if I see anything that needs to be corrected or improved I immediately write it down so that we can review it the next day. At practice when we go over the findings I show the kids what happened, how they could have avoided it and ways to get out of it instead of just telling them it was wrong. This way, they are improving themselves and the team. Problems that are never fixed will always be problems; problems that are fixed can only get better from there. Hopes for this season for the Spartans? My hopes are minimal injuries, team growth and improvement, and an overall successful season. I want to give the wrestlers the opportunity to showcase their talent and to improve on what they already know. Lastly, my hope for this season is to show the kids they can go the distance and they are worth the effort.
