Editor’s Note:
Calendar
What readers want: All local, all the time Pretty much everyone carrying a cell phone has a camera at hand. Pictures are taken and shared more often than the days when a Kodak Instamatic was in every home. The “selfie” has become part of our lives and language. Photos are everywhere. Despite all those images being taken and shared through social media, few of them end up with the ultimate tribute – hanging on the refrigerator at home or the wall at work. In my 30 years of experience with newspapers in Northeastern Pennsylvania, I learned that readers like seeing themselves – or people they know – in the pages of the printed paper. They can never see too many local photos. You can still walk into a diner and hear customers chatting about high school sports and see the photo of a neighbor’s son or daughter hanging near the counter. Parents still want a copy of a photo from the 5K race, not of the winner, but because someone they know is pictured at the starting line. Wyoming Valley Sport Shot will present those photos of the athletes who compete in games and events throughout our communities. Daily newspapers do that but only devote so much space to local sports photos. Wyoming Valley Sport Shot is entirely local sports photos. And with more photos you’ll see athletes other than the quarterback, star pitcher or the first-place runner or swimmer. Wyoming Valley Sport Shot won’t replace the daily paper sports section, the statistics or the reporting of professional and college sports. Think of Wyoming Valley Sports Shot as community news on the field of play providing photographic coverage of a variety of sports and participants throughout our community. The publication will certainly evolve after this first edition.Your suggestions are welcome here.
