Editor’s Note: Give it a Shot As many readers know, I’ve been continuing my running efforts trying to build up my endurance. For an update, I think it’s going well, but I needed something to mix things up. I found myself getting stuck in the same workout routine, which we all know isn’t good for the body or the mind. So, I tried something I’ve been thinking about trying for some time now: a workout class. I’ve been looking at different classes at local gyms to see if there was something that interested me. I always found something I liked but either needed a membership or didn’t want to go alone. Thankfully, I found a buddy and we picked a class to try. I’m on my fourth week of “Jacked Ass” at Leverage Fitness Studio in Forty Fort and have to say I’m really enjoying it. It’s the perfect class to incorporate into my regular routine because it gives my legs a good stretch and a workout that I feel compliments my running. The class is fast pace and thorough. I feel like I’m working muscles I wouldn’t exert by only running.
I was so nervous to try something new at a gym I’d never been to, but now I’m wondering what I was so afraid of. Keeping up? Not being able to do it? After attending three classes I learned that I need to be more open to trying new things. Although I fell behind in the first class because I was trying to get the moves down, I still felt great after the work out. So what if that first class I only did eight reps instead of ten? Did anyone notice except me? Probably not and I was happier doing eight reps correctly than ten reps too fast. Everything I was nervous about is minimal to me now. I’m happy I found a buddy for class because working out with a friend is great for different reasons. It allows you to bond over an activity and it keeps me accountable. It’s harder to skip out on a class or make excuses if a friend is counting on me to be there. So, grab a friend and find a class. If you leave with JELL-O legs like I did after the first class, it’s OK. Don’t let that stop you from going again!

Senior Spotlight: Bree Bednarski By Ellen Hoffman Wyoming Area senior Bree Bednarski has always been an athlete. Starting as a softball player, she became interested in field hockey after her older sister started playing. Since she picked up her first field hockey stick at tenyears-old, something stuck. So, to be continuing her field hockey career at a Division 1 school, Bednarski is very excited. “I never really expected it,” she said. “Even my parents thought I would go to college for softball and then things shifted a little and I became more in to field hockey and I actually got in to college for it so that was really exciting.” Bednarski is headed to the University of Michigan in the fall as a part of the Wolverine’s field hockey team.
really close.”
After going on many different school visits and weighing her options, she decided on Michigan for a number of different reasons. “I went there for my first visit and as soon as I walked up to the team they were in a huddle and they took me right in with them, which was so cool.” Between the team, the coaching staff and the academics, Bednarski is happy with her decision and is looking forward to the next chapter of her athletic and academic career. “The Big Ten always stuck out to me, so that was really cool that they got in touch with me and reached out to me first.” She was able to narrow her search down to a top two and in the end, decided on Michigan. “I visited a lot of other schools,” she said. “I think the field and everything that they had at the field for the athletes really stuck out to me. The coaches are really, really good. I really liked them and the team and I think that just clicked with me.” Bednarski leaves her team of Wyoming Area Warriors after a very successful season. She ended her high school career with 127 goals, ranking seventh in the nation for career goals in the 2016 class. She also ended as the second highest individual scorer in one season with 67 recorded goals as a senior. “I had at least a hat trick each game and a couple games I had eight goals,” she said. “I couldn’t do it without the girls next to me. They get the ball to me and helped me do it.” Bednarski said the most important thing field hockey has taught her is how to work together with other people. “We are really close. I don’t know what it is about the field hockey team, but we’re all
Which is why she says it’s bittersweet leaving the team she’s been playing with for the past 11 years. “We’ve all grown up playing together,” she said. “It’s sad because I’m never going to play with them again but we’re going on to new things. I’m going to miss playing with them.” But, she says they ended their high school career on a high note. In a five-day span, the Wyoming Area Warriors defeated Wyoming Seminary and Holy Redeemer, something they had never accomplished. That same week during the win over Holy Redeemer, Bednarski scored her 100th career goal. “It was really exciting because everyone came running at me.,” she said after netting that monumental goal. “They ran out with flowers and stuff right in the middle of the game. It was so fun.” She already recorded a hat trick against Holy Redeemer and knew she only needed one more goal. “I got the ball and just reverse shot it and it went right in. It was a home game so that made it special too.” Although her list of achievements is already lengthy, she is excited to learn more at the Division 1 level. “I know that Michigan will be able to better me as a player as a whole, which I’m looking forward to.” Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2016 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level.
