Editor’s Note: Spirit of Sport Shot Your Shots Two years ago I was given the month. They bring new ideas, Electric Surge Captures U14 opportunity to take over as different events and an Editor/Publisher of Wyoming athletic spirit to the pages of Valley Sport Shot. When this monthly publication. National Indoor FH Tourney Title presented with the publication I loved the mission it set out to achieve: capturing the spirit of high school and recreational athletes. I both respect and appreciate the daily papers’ sports coverage but I know there is a place in the Wyoming Valley for what Sport Shot offers in addition to the daily reporting. It’s important to not only highlight the star athletes and winning teams but also the intramural, club and private teams that don’t see the daily recognition. There is an athlete inside of everyone – whether that is a high school senior going off to a Division 1 team, a club team competing in a tournament, a private league working on training in the off-season and developing skills – they’re all important and all deserve coverage. The staff of Wyoming Valley Sport Shot helps me showcase these athletes month after

We’re always looking for new teams and athletes to feature, and we welcome your suggestions. (Email us!) I love receiving the “Your Shot” submissions and seeing what achievements are being made right here in Northeastern Pennsylvania. It’s fun to learn about the different teams and athletes hidden throughout the towns that represent the Wyoming Valley. It’s also exciting to become part of the atmosphere at a rivalry or playoff game. Each team, each school has a different presence and it’s fun to become a fan of each. Thank you to the fans of Sport Shot who continue to pick up the copies each month and share with friends and family. WVSS is growing because of you! We strive to continue to bring the best coverage of local sports and hope you’ll stick around to see what’s next.

Senior Spotlight: Ally Rome By Ellen Hoffman

Ally Rome, Dallas High School senior, cannot remember a time when running wasn’t a part of her lifestyle. The two-time cross country state champion is headed to Princeton University in the fall to join the prestigious cross country and track teams. Rome got her first taste of victory during a local 5K race she ran as an eight-year-old, winning her age bracket. “It’s not like I was training or anything, but I remember going out and jogging the course with my dad and ended up winning my age group,” she said. “So that was really exciting.” Rome has other accomplishments from her 10 plus years of competitive running. Aside from claiming the state title in cross country both her junior and senior years, she’s also been a state medalist in track multiple times throughout her high school career. Most recently she placed fourth at indoor track states. Nabbing back-to-back state titles in cross country is what she counts as her most proud individual accomplishment – so far. “Just being able to do something that amazing and that special felt great even the second time around,” she said. “There wasn’t any kind of feeling like, ‘Oh I did this before.’ It was amazing to be able to do it twice.” As a team, the Dallas Mountaineers won the state title during Rome’s sophomore year, which she counts as her most memorable experience thus far. “That was really special for us as a team because we had lost by three points the year before. That really hurt all us. So it was so exciting to come back and win.” Rome remembers celebrating with a parade and assembly at school following the team win. The individual and team form that both cross country and track offer is something

Rome enjoys. “I definitely like that aspect of it because I think that you can’t rely on anyone else. It all comes down to: you get out of it exactly what you put in. There are no short cuts, and I really like that because I think it really teaches you hard work and dedication,” she said. “I think it’s really exciting to know that every day counts and you aren’t going to have to rely on someone doing well or someone messing up. I really like the fact that it all comes down to you in the end. And, in order for your team to do well, individuals have to do well.” As a junior, she started realizing the opportunities running has given her. “I think that I always knew I wanted to compete in college and it opened up a lot of doors for me as far as schools. I was able to commit to a really good school, which I’m so excited about.” She always knew running would be in her future, at the collegiate level or even after. She’s looking forward to what her experience at Princeton will teach her. “I hope that I can progress and get better as an athlete for myself. I hope to contribute to the team and be able to make the travel team and just become better in my own personal skills, beating my personal bests.” Rome will receive her summer schedule before high school graduation and start training before she even gets on the Ivy League campus. “Everyone says cross country seasons are made in the summer. There isn’t too much of an off period.” Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2016 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level. Wrestlers Grab National Titles Jack Davis, Wyoming Seminary sophomore from Hanover Township, won his first National Prep School Wrestling Championship during his first time competing at the event. “It was a great experience to go there and win a National Championship in my first year of competition there,” he said. “The competition was toughest in the final match, which I won 3-1. It was a great experience to be with some of the best wrestlers in the nation.” Davis finished the 2015-16 season with a 37-5 record, with an overall 67-14 career record. He’s excited to be able to train to compete in another National Championship competition next season. The sophomore Knight is competing this summer at the NHSCA Tournament in Virginia Beach and at the FILA Cadet Tournament in Akron, Ohio. Michael Rogers, Wyoming Seminary senior from Spring Mills, PA, secured his second National Championship this season at the Prep event. “It was a lot of fun and very intense,” he said. “It was a tough tournament but I tried to relax and have fun with it. My opponents were tough and very good wrestlers and I have a lot of respect for them. I expect I will see some of them in my college tournaments because we will be competing in the same conference.” Rogers will wrestle at North Carolina State next year in the heavyweight class. Aside from winning two National Championships, he is a 3-time All-American. He also came in second in freestyle and third in Greco-Roman style at the 2015 Junior Wrestling Olympics in Havana, Cuba.

Mason Manville, Wyoming Seminary senior from Lorton,VA, won his won his second National Prep School Wrestling Championship. “It was a lot of fun and a good experience. I had been there before and knew what to expect,” he said. “I wanted to really push and challenge myself to go above and beyond what I’ve done before. I had previously beaten all the opponents I faced at nationals. I expect to see most of them again in future competitions.” Previously, Manville earned first place at Walsh Ironman and Powerade tournaments and competed for Team USA in the 2016 Dream Team Classic where he took first place. During the 2015-16 season he had an undefeated 32-0 record. Manville is headed to Penn State in the fall where he will wrestle and take part in the ROTC program. Patrick Munn, Wyoming Seminary senior from Houston, TX, won his first National Prep School Wrestling Championship. “It was very exciting to compete,” he said of the Prep Tournament. “I was not the favorite to win so it gave me extra incentive. The last match was the toughest and I had to work more on my technique and my No. 1 setup.” He nabbed fifth place at the Walsh Ironman Tournament and second place at the pre-season national tournament. Munn is set to wrestle at the University of Pennsylvania in the fall for head coach Alex Tirapelle and assistant coach Michael McMullan, a 2010 Sem graduate. “I chose Penn because of the outstanding academic programs and because I really liked the campus, the team and the coaches.” Munn will participate in the ROTC program.
