Editor’s Note: Fighting for a Cause There are a bunch of races available every weekend in NEPA. Some races have been around for decades and are so well known they bring out 500+ people. Other races are just getting off the ground. No matter what the race is called or what organization it benefits, there is always a story behind it. I feel like a lot of times, the stories aren’t shared. Donn’s Dash is the NEPA Run for ALS. The inaugural race was held last June and the second event wrapped last weekend. Donn’s Dash will always hold a special place in my running heart because it was the first 5K I ran after training with the Wyoming Valley Lady Striders. I worked so hard to prepare for the race and was so proud of my time. Donn’s Dash is also special to me because of the people who organized it. I work in the same office as the event coordinators so I’m able to watch first hand what they put in to making this race a success. These people care so much about this cause, and the family of Donn Schmidt, for whom the

race was named after. I witnessed that in the months, weeks, days leading up to the run. While I wasn’t able to run the 5K this year, I’m happy the team had such a great turn out for the second consecutive year. Over 100 runners made their way through the summer heat to help bring awareness and raise money for ALS research. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year and the life expectancy of an ALS patient averages about two to five years from the time of diagnosis. Donn lost his battle to ALS about three years after the original diagnosis. The Donn’s Dash team wanted to honor his memory and help others suffering with this disease. Last year the event helped to raise over $15K, which could help purchase many different services to ALS patients. Kudos to the Donn’s Dash committee for another race in the books. Until next year!

Senior Spotlight: Brigid Wood By Ellen Hoffman Not many high school athletes can walk away with a District title. Coughlin’s Brigid Wood has three. The recent graduate helped capture AAA District Championships for the Coughlin Crusaders during her freshman, sophomore and senior seasons. “Winning District Championships were always a lot of fun,” she said looking back at her high school career. Not only did she prove successful on the high school stage, she was chosen for first team All-American as well as the under 19 US Team as a junior. “It was just a great experience playing with some of the best girls from all over the country and getting better as an individual,” she said. “Playing with girls that are better and just top level players really helps you to grow as an individual because it makes you push yourself to realize there are girls that are so much better than you.” Being part of the under 19 US Team lead her to Germany for her Christmas break of her junior year. “I think the entire program benefitted from going over there and competing against the Germans. They’re really good and it was such a cool experience.” Wood is taking what she’s learned so far to Boston College in the fall where she’ll join the Eagles field hockey team. She said she always knew her field hockey career would continue after high school. With her mom, Colleen Wood, the head coach at Coughlin, field hockey has always been a part of her life. “I got my first stick when I was born in the hospital, so I just kind of grew up with it.” Her mom has been coaching the Crusaders for over 20 years, so Wood attended many games before she was eligible to play. Instead, she was able to take in all the success the field hockey team made. She even idolized some of the players. “When I was little I wanted to be Heather Susek [Coughlin field hockey stand out who played for Syracuse University].” Growing up around the sport, Wood has high hopes for her collegiate career. “I think everyone wants to win a National Championship,” she said. “But I think it’s important to just make the most of it.” Wood definitely made the most of her four high school years. Aside from winning District Titles, she and her team walked away from the

2015 regular season undefeated. “Senior year was actually the only year that my mom ever had an undefeated season, so that was exciting,” she said. “We lost in the state quarterfinals to Emmaus. But senior year was cool because it was a group of girls that all grew up playing together.” The group of graduates started playing together in elementary school when Coughlin first offered a field hockey camp to students. “We’ve all been friends since like first grade but playing together since third grade. So our senior season was a long time in the making.” Wood says she’ll miss playing with the girls she grew up with but has so many memories she’ll keep with her. One memory that [literally] sticks out happened before a rival game. “During warm ups I was shooting on goal and I took one shot and cracked my stick in half right before the game was about to start,” she said. “So I had to play the game with a bunch of girls’ random sticks that they had from like junior high.” The Crusaders still won the game but that event helped Wood loosen up a bit. Some say she’s pretty focused when on the field. “On the field I’m very intense. Off the field I’m a totally different person.” Why’s that? “I like to win.” Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2016 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level. Second baseman, and now Royals graduate, Olivia Mennig was a part of Holy Redeemer’s three State Championship titles. The 18-year-old racked up a number of achievements during her four years on the team: 3x District 2 Softball Champion, 2x PIAA Class AA Champion, Royal Leadership Athlete Award, NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete Award. Now, she’s reflecting on her senior season and what it’s like being a back-to-back State Champ.

We also got to watch the Class AAA before us and that got us really excited to play. How did the team prepare for the game? Did you change anything from last years prep? We knew there was a possibility of the game being postponed this year so we were all getting frustrated with the weather but we stayed loose, drank a lot of chocolate milk and focused, just like last year.
