Editor’s Note: Mix It Up At some point everyone gets into a funk with their workout routine. That’s just it – it becomes routine and sometimes boring. Lately, that’s the position I’ve been in and wanted to change. As you know, I’ve taken up running within the past year and a half. While running is great and something I’m really enjoying, I need some variety in the other aspects of my workout. Here are a few tips on how to find new workout regimens: Take a New Class I started taking a class at Leverage Fitness Studio in Forty Fort earlier this year. I loved it but stuck with only that class, never branched out to the other offerings. Recently, I tried a new class the studio started offering and love this one too! I had to get out of my comfort zone to realize I can take on a new challenge. Download an App I use the Nike Running app regularly but recently downloaded the Nike Fitness app after a recommendation from my sister. The app is great. There are so
many different options and it can all be tailored to your interests or activity levels. The app offers trainings in strength, endurance and mobility. Honestly, I think it would be hard for someone to download this app and not find something new! Social Media Inspiration I noticed that some of the SnapChat accounts I follow started offering fitness tips. It’s funny how social media influences our daily lives so much. When I’m clicking through my SnapChat stories of friends or celebrities and then I come across a story from PopSugar: “10 Killer Variations That Will Step Up Your Plank Game.” I slowed down my clicking to really pay attention and take notes for my next work out. A task as easy as watching my SnapChat, something I do multiple times a day, led me to a new workout option. These three easy tricks helped me out of my workout rut. See if just one can help you. Let me know if you have any specific workout tips by emailing: wyomingvalleysportshot@gmail.com

Senior Spotlight: LJ Wesneski By Ellen Hoffman
Just shortly after high school graduation, Wyoming Valley West graduate LJ Wesneski packed his bag for the next adventure. He was off to the University of Albany training camp for incoming freshmen joining the Division 1 football team. The players take summer classes and begin training before the upperclassmen arrive on campus for camp. “It’s been fun,” he said. “Week one was a little bit of an eye opener because we’re into college workouts, but as the weeks are going on we’re coming together as a team.” Wesneski feels his days as a Spartan prepared him for this next step. “In high school you hear about college football and when I got here it was exactly that. We= got here and jumped into classes and our workouts. I was as prepared as I could be from moving from high school to college. I’m definitely more prepared for when the rest of the team comes.” Wesneski’s Spartan days not only got him ready for his college program, they left him with countless memories. The football team of the 2016 class at Wyoming Valley West was the third team to go undefeated and is the winningest class in school history. During Wesneski’s time as a Spartan he also recorded two District titles. “It’s an awesome feeling,” he said. As if the fall season wasn’t great enough, Wesneski received some exciting news in April. He was picked as part of Pennsylvania’s Big 33 team. “It was just a great feeling knowing I was picked as one of the top 33 players in the state of Pennsylvania and knowing I would be representing the state in a football game like that was just awesome,” he said. Mid-June, Wesneski joined other players from Pennsylvania to take down Maryland 26-14 in the all-star game. It’s not surprising Wesneski was chosen to represent the state in this annual game. At the end of his season as a tight end in 2015 PIAA All-State AAAA he was first in the state in touch downs (9), third in the state in receptions (37 receptions - 498 yards) and fourth in the state in total yardage, including wide receiver (505 yards). He always knew high school football would not be the end of his time on the turf. As a child, he tried out different sports

So ever since I was little kid I knew I wanted to play college ball.” The college recruitment process started after his sophomore season and junior year was when things really picked up speed. He talked with and visited a number of schools but ultimately decided Albany would be home. “Albany just had a home feeling for me,” he said. “It’s close enough to home but far enough away that I get the college experience. The coaches and players are great up here and the facilities are awesome but most importantly it has that home feeling. That’s a big reason I chose here.” As freshman training camp comes to a close, Wesneski says he’s prepared for the upcoming season but knows he has so much more to learn at Albany. He’s excited to work with tight ends coach and former NFL player Nate Byham. “He can definitely show me a lot of technique and form and footwork to help me in game situations.” Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2016 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level.
