Editor’s Note: National Team Players Return to Home Turf Every month Sport Shot chooses to feature a local high school athlete moving on to compete in Division 1 athletics. The Division 1 athletes I have talked to for the Senior Spotlight feature have been really inspiring. It’s amazing to hear how passionate they are for their sport. A few local athletes, who took to Division 1 athletics, are now teammates on the U.S. National Field Hockey Team. Paige Selenski, Kat Sharkey and Kelsey Kolojejchick made a return to the Wyoming Valley after winning gold at the Pan American Games in Toronto, which secured them a spot in the 2016 Olympic Games. The National team players came back to host the Red, White, Blue and You field hockey clinic at Wyoming Seminary. The camp, open to middle and high school players, brought roughly 85 girls to the turf. The camp included a morning session for the younger age

group and an afternoon session for high school players. A camp hosted by players of the U.S. National Team drew in players outside of the local schools. Some campers came from outside of Pennsylvania, from states like New York and New Jersey. It’s nice to see these National Team players coming home to work with younger players; players whose shoes they’ve been in before. Selenski, a Dallas grad, and Kolojejchick and Sharkey, both of Wyoming Seminary, stood out on the field during their time in the Valley. Local athletes look to them as role models and aspire to become as successful as they are. Keeping in shape during the summertime is important. Camps hosted around the Valley are staples for local athletes. Check out photos of local camps scattered throughout this issue. The Red, White, Blue and You Clinic is featured on pages four and five.

Senior Spotlight: Olivia Gregorio By Ellen Hoffman

Olivia Gregorio’s journey to Division 1 athletics was different from most. While she always strived to be recruited by some of the top schools in the country, the sport she wanted to be recruited for changed during her senior year. The Holy Redeemer graduate was an avid soccer player since age four. She competed on travel teams and throughout her years at Holy Redeemer. During her off-season sophomore year, she competed in a 5K and submitted her time to the Holy Redeemer track coaches. They were

of time to her training schedule and set goals – to hit a certain time and walk away with a medal. What they didn’t plan for was Gregorio getting sick the night before her race. She competed in the preliminary’s but didn’t make it any further in competition. “I always joke that I came back a different person because I considered that a failure at the time, but I didn’t think I was going to succeed again,” she said. “Just the little successes that came after completely triumphed that experience.” What she didn’t know at the time was that better things were

impressed with her time and asked her to come to a winter track meet. That “eye-opening” experience shifted her goals to focus more on running. She joined the track team her sophomore and junior years and made the switch to a fulltime runner when she left the soccer team to join the cross country squad during her senior year. “It was definitely the right decision,” she said. “I don’t regret it at all. I miss the sport of soccer but with all the opportunities and people I’ve met through cross country I would not go back at all.” Thankfully, she had a smooth transition. During track, she competed in the 4x8 relay – a team event. She joined a relay team of older girls, which she is thankful for. “That was really good motivation for the next two years,” she said of what she had learned from her relay team. It wasn’t until her senior year that she competed in events on her own. “I liked it because I like to be responsible for my training. You always want someone to train with but at the same time when it gets serious you know that it’s on you,” she said. “So I liked the individual aspect of it. I felt like less was up to chance because I knew it was all on me.” The most important thing Gregorio said she’s learned from track and cross country is patience. As a junior on the track team she qualified for sates. She and her coach dedicated a lot

to come. During her senior year, and first year as a member of the cross country team, she qualified for states. “It was more meaningful because it was my first cross country season. That lesson was kind of like, just wait, there is a plan, it will work out.” It was not until the middle of her senior year that she decided on plans for college. Gregorio had been going on college visits since her sophomore year, meeting with different soccer coaches. She thought she was ahead of the game until she switched gears from soccer to cross country. Seton Hall was the last of three schools on her list of opportunities for cross country. Gregorio said meeting with the coach and team really helped her make her decision. “What stood out with the Seton Hall coach was that with other coaches they will contact you via email or phone calls. He would actually send me packets with hand written letters and would include newspaper clippings with past accomplishments and pictures of the team,” she said. “It felt really personal.” About a month after her official visit she committed. Gregorio plans on studying biology with a physical therapy track. “I am so excited,” she said. Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2015 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level.
