Editor’s Note: Stay Motivated Losing is never fun. Losing to the same team year after year is tough. It’s hard to keep motivated going into a situation that’s had the same outcome many years in a row. I attended a girls soccer game earlier this season and watched all that change. I talked to some of the girls on the team who hadn’t won against their opponent in over six years. Even though they were having a successful start to their season, they entered the stadium uneasy about taking the field. They were confident in their line up and skills but after seeing the same outcome, it was hard for them not to worry. As I watched the game unfold, I knew the teams were evenly matched – better matched than they had been any year prior. When it came down to the final moments of the game, the outcome was different than it had been in the past few years. It’s important to not defeat yourself before the game even starts. If the team wasn’t confident in their ability, they would
have been defeated before taking the field. Working hard and earning a win after all those years of defeat feels even better. Talking with some of the players after the game they were elated. It’s a great accomplishment and something they worked toward. After graduates of that team heard the news they shared congratulatory words with their old team. The former teammates were equally excited for the win – one girl even saying she was more excited for this win than the U.S. Women’s National team winning the World Cup. Moving into the second half of the season, with some tougher match-ups, I hope all teams consider this before taking the field. Don’t defeat yourself. And, as our Ocotber Senior Spotlight player says, “Keep trying for the next goal or the next win, even if you are behind. If you do your best, you’ll never be disappointed in yourself.” Read more about that on the next page.

Senior Spotlight: Talia Szatkowski By Ellen Hoffman Talia Szatkowski, 2015 Dallas High School graduate, didn’t see her soccer career continuing after high school. Shocking to many, the soccer stand-out didn’t have her sights set on Division 1 athletics and was more focused on her academic path: animal behavior, with the goal of one day going to medical or veterinarian school. But, things happen for a reason and Szatkowski is now a member of the Division 1 Bucknell University women’s soccer team. “Actually, up until this past August, I didn’t think I’d be playing soccer any more,” she said. She always had Bucknell in mind for where she wanted to continue her academics. After touring the school during her senior year she met with the head coach who let her know she was too late. Bucknell had their freshmen
Although she did not plan to continue her soccer career after high school, Szatkowski was well prepared having played since age four. She tagged along to her older sister’s soccer practices and learned the basic skills that by the time she was able to join an intramural team, she already had too much experience to play with kids her own age. Instead of joining a team her age, she played with girls two years older and also joined the Wyoming Valley Soccer Club boys’ team – where she first remembers playing. “I played on that boys’ team and the opponents’ dads would yell at their sons who played offense,” she said. “They’d be chastising them as to how they could let a girl stop them from scoring.” Szatkowski played defense up until her
commitments already. She knew she didn’t want another school so accepted the fact that her competitive soccer career was over. After graduating from Dallas in June, Szatkowski heard that Bucknell had hired a new coach. She attended the soccer camp in July and was offered a try-out on the team. “I was so excited when I was told I had made the team. I was able to go to my first choice school and play soccer too.” Now, about half way through the fall season, Szatkowski has learned the level of play is much higher than what she was used to in high school. “I’ve already learned a work ethic at a level that I never truly understood while I was in high school,” she said. “I’m with all high level players, both on my team and the teams we play against, so it’s definitely much more of a challenge to score.” Szatkowski takes her soccer career more serious than she did in high school. The level of play is much higher, she said, so she needs to maintain a degree of seriousness. “We need to take every practice in college as serious as if it’s a game. We have fun as a team, but we work really hard.”
junior year at Dallas. She made the switch to forward and hasn’t looked back. She recorded 130 goals in her time at Dallas – breaking the previous scoring record of 114. “It was really an extra special achievement for me because the previous records had been set by girls who had played forward for four years,” she said. “I only played forward for two years.” But, she doesn’t take all the credit for those goals. She said she couldn’t have done it without the help of her team. “Without the support of my team, without the assists from the other players, it would have been impossible for me to score half of the goals I did.” She is enjoying her first semester of college, playing the sport she loves. Through it all, she tries to remember to never give up on anything. “Keep trying for the next goal or the next win, even if you are behind. If you do your best, you’ll never be disappointed in yourself.” Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2015 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level.
