Editor’s Note: Jumping Off Calories Not too long ago I went to Sky Zone in Pittston with some friends. Let me just say I did not expect to have as much fun as I did AND get such a great workout! Fast forward to the September issue of Shape magazine and I’ve come to the conclusion I may need to add trampoline exercise to my workouts. According to an article in Shape, jumping on a trampoline could be a better workout than running. Say what?! “It turns out, a workout on a mini-trampoline will get you some of the same get-fit benefits as running, but it won’t feel as difficult, according to a new study by the American Council on Exercise,” says Shape magazine. The American College of Sports Medicine conducted a study and found that students’ heart rates during trampoline exercise matched up with guidelines for improving cardiorespiratory fitness. According to the article, ACSM recommends burning 200 to 300 calories during each 30-minute
workout in order to lose or manage weight, which equals about 6.7 to 10 calories per minute. During the mini trampoline workouts, men burned an average of 12.4 calories per minute and women burned 9.4 calories per minute. Not too shabby! That calorie burn is on par with running a 10-minute mile. For those of you out there that find running exhausting or terrifying, maybe it’s time to give trampoline jumping a chance. Or, for those that enjoy running, try out jumping as something to supplement your running workouts. Sky Zone in Pittston offers SkyFitness and SkyRobics classes held on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. This is definitely something I’ll need to try out. If you’re not ready for a structured trampoline fitness class, just check out Sky Zone for an open jump with friends. If four 24-year-olds could have a blast, anyone can! Sky Zone also offers ultimate dodgeball, sky slam basketball and a foam pit.

Senior Spotlight: Paige Kupsky By Ellen Hoffman
After Paige Kupsky’s eighth grade year, she took a look at her athletic capabilities. The then 14-year-old knew she wasn’t all that great at field hockey, the sport she played throughout middle school. So, she had to decide whether in high school she wanted to try to improve her field hockey game or focus on the only element she was good at: running. She elected to give cross country a try. “I was terrified on my first day of cross country,” she said, “I actually almost didn’t get out of my mom’s car because I was so scared on my first day of preseason.” The recent Wyoming Seminary graduate surprised herself with the way her athletic path took her throughout high school. If someone asked eighth grade Kupsky if she’d be a Division 1 cross country and track athlete, she would never believe it. Now, Kupsky is racing through her freshman season at Bucknell University. “I definitely always saw myself doing a sport in college,” she said. “Going DI was always on my mind, but it wouldn’t have been the end of the world if I went DIII as long as I was doing something and loving what I was doing.” Kupsky was always a multi-sport athlete, trying her hand in many different activities. Between field hockey and running, she was also a competitive swimmer. “I never thought I would actually get contacted by any college running coaches because I was so set on swimming in college.” She had attended swim meets throughout high school at Bucknell University and filled out a running recruitment form not thinking much of it. To her surprise, she was contacted for an official visit. “Throughout my senior year, my swim season was not really going as planned, and Coach [Kevin] Donner was very enthusiastic about recruiting me, so I eventually chose a new path I had never considered before. I am now very happy with my decision,” she said. Since transitioning to Bucknell and concentrating on just one sport, Kupsky is trying to get the hang of collegiate athletics. “I have always done at least two sports at one time and I am not used to putting all my time and effort into just one sport, especially not running,” she said. But, something cross country has taught her from the beginning is to never give up. “You can be so far behind somebody in the first mile of the race and still have the capability to catch up to them later if you stay calm
Football is back! Enjoy our NFL package on 11 big screen TVs - perfect for all fans! Catch the college and pro games while enjoying great food! and keep going.” Being a part of the cross country and track teams have taught Kupsky the importance of teamwork. “Every sport I have ever done at a high level has been an ‘individual sport’, but doing these sports has taught me that sometimes, the success of the team is more important than your own success.” This stems from her high school success. During her senior year at Wyoming Seminary, she and her sister Tara both qualified for the PIAA District 2 Championships. “It was an amazing moment because I was so proud to have been captain of such an amazing team and get to see my best friends succeed alongside me. I remember finding out that they qualified and crying because I was so happy.,” she said. “I will always remember that moment.” Even though she’s only been a Bucknell student for a few weeks, she knows what she wants to get out of her time in college. “I hope to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle and take my academics and athletics very seriously, while also experiencing college and having fun. I also hope to build a good base so that I can continue running for the rest of my life, whether it’s just for fun or in marathons eventually.” Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2016 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level. TIME OUT with Chris Bleich, Wyoming Valley West By Ellen Hoffman
Wyoming Valley West junior Chris Bleich returned this season to his Pennsylvania roots after a semester of training at football powerhouse IMG Academy in Florida. In January, Bleich received the opportunity to attend IMG to play with and against some of the top high school football players in the country. While ultimately he decided a normal high school experience at Valley West would be a better fit for him, he is thankful for his IMG experience and took positives away from his time in Florida. There he learned skills that will better him at WVW in the offensive and defensive tackle positions. Just beginning his junior year, Bleich verbally committed to Penn State University and has received other offers from Mississippi State and is still talking with other collegiate programs. Read on to find out more about Bleich and his goals this season
How did you become interested in football? I was never interested in football growing up. I always wanted to be like my middle brother and travel the country. My first year of football wasn’t until 8th grade. Everyone kept pounding in my head “football, football, football.” And it didn’t help that my dad had no faith in my hoop game, something my whole family agreed with. So far, what’s the most memorable moment from high school football? The most memorable moment of football for me is when we lost at Delaware Valley and got a silver medal [2014 District Championship Game, Delaware Valley defeated WVW 38-19 to take gold]. That was only my second year of playing football but still to this day it upsets me. I never want to lose. Having a silver medal around your neck and seeing your teammates
will never forget. What is something you learned at IMG Academy that has already helped this season? Being able to bend is the most important thing as a lineman. At IMG Academy we had a yoga class and this has made my job so much easier. Everything will start with your stance. If you want to bend but can’t get into a good stance you’ll have trouble.
cry and watching the team with the gold around their necks celebrating and laugh sucks to me.
What is a personal and team goal you have this season? My personal goal is just to be better then last year. For a team goal we want to take the first 5A gold.
What was it like training at the IMG Academy? Training at IMG was a very cool experience for me. I got to meet some people along the way that I
Do you have any pre game rituals? For pre game rituals this year I started going to my grandpa’s grave and praying on it. Then, be-

fore the games start I always bring my holy rosary with me and my one friend Brydon Rukstalis and I will pray right before the game starts. Have you always aspired to play football at the collegiate level? I never really thought playing college ball was a possibility, especially since I started so late compared to the kids that did mini football. But my dad and uncles always preached and burned into my head work ethic and if you really want something you will work for it. What has the college scouting process been like? The college recruitment is still going on for me. It’s a cool thing to go through but it is a very stressful thing at the same time. Growing up I was never a PSU fan, believe it or not. Whatever teamed my dad liked I liked.
