Editor’s Note: Play Like an Underdog As teams move into the playoff season for high school athletics, there is one thing recent events have reminded me: never underestimate the underdogs. Although I wasn’t in Happy Valley during the Penn State vs. Ohio State game, I was cheering for the Nitany Lions from the Wyoming Valley. Everyone, even some of the most dedicated Penn State fans I know, counted their team out against the undefeated Ohio State Buckeyes. Down 21-7 going into the fourth quarter, no one expected the ending Penn State pulled off. They were by far the underdogs in this game with Ohio State showing up to Happy Valley with a 20-game road winning streak. In the fourth quarter Penn State surprised everyone putting up 17 points to finish the game 24-21. It’s something no one expected. The last time Penn State beat a team ranked in the top five was 1999.

As Wyoming Valley teams head into their District games, I encourage you to remember that as the underdog you have nothing to use but everything to gain. You may be the number six team matched up against the top seeded team, don’t let that discourage you. If you go in with a defeated attitude, you will be defeated. At the same time, if you go into a game like you’ve already won, that could end up hurting you. Maybe that’s what happened to Ohio State. I mean, the last time OSU lost in Happy Valley was in 2005. However it played out, anyone who has played a game as the underdog knows: it’s so much sweeter to win a game no one expects you to win. Play confidently. Work as a team. Believe in yourself. Good luck to the Wyoming Valley teams competing in District games this month. Keep a look out for the Wyoming Valley Sport Shot photographers ready to capture these exciting games for our December issue.

Senior Spotlight: Ryan Hogan By Ellen Hoffman

Ryan Hogan, Wyoming Valley West class of 2016 graduate, knew early on baseball was not something he wanted to give up after his senior year. As a junior, he verbally committed to St. John’s University to become part of their Division 1 baseball team. “I did not know how far baseball could take me until I reached high school,” he said. “I was recruited by several schools but I enjoyed St. John’s the most so I picked there.” Baseball has been part of his life for years. He started playing tee ball when he was four-years-old but then quit to try out other sports. Eventually, he made his way back to baseball at age seven, liking that sport the most. Joining the varsity team as a freshman he was instantly an asset to the Spartans. During his first season as a Spartan, he had the game-winning hit in the district final against Scranton. Since then he’s gone on to assist WVW in winning three district titles. Hogan finished his senior season second in the conference in hitting at .471 during the regular season. He also led the entire league with 16 RBI. Not only does Hogan have experience with high school district and state games but also with American Legion finals. Hogan was a member of the Swoyersville Senior American Legion team in 2014 when they took home the state title, something he says is his favorite baseball memory. “It was definitely an unbelievable experience winning the state title,” he said. “It was a group of older kids mostly and it was fun playing with them. I think we were definitely the underdogs and we proved ourselves.” Playing for so many years with the same group of guys surely made it hard for Hogan to say goodbye. “The nice thing about high school baseball was that most of us hung out outside of baseball,” he said, “So it developed good team chemistry.” One of the main lessons baseball has taught him is to enjoy his time because it goes fast. “Enjoy the time with your friends and don’t take the game too seriously,” he said. All of the titles and accolades don’t mean Hogan wasn’t ready to learn more at the D1 level. Now that he’s been on campus for a

few months, he feels settled in and adjusted to life away from home. Not only did he have to get adjusted to new teammates and coaches but also new classes and dorm-life. “Definitely managing the new schedule that I have was tough,” he said. “The first few weeks of school were rough trying to get acclimated but I’m adjusted fine now.” Hogan joins the Division 1 team as a catcher and/or outfielder. “There’s always more to learn in baseball,” he said. Hogan was one of nine incoming freshmen to the St. John’s team. So far they’ve practiced together daily and are almost finished with their fall season. Baseball wasn’t the only thing that attracted Hogan to this school. He’s majoring in computer science and minoring in cyber security. “I obviously have aspirations of continuing my baseball career after college, but I am passionate about my major, which I have already been doing personally for the past two years or so,” he said. “I hope to come out of school accomplishing my academic and baseball goals, and continuing whichever works out to my favor.” Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2016 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level. TIME OUT with Karen Moskel By Ellen Hoffman The Wyoming Valley Lady Striders encourage female runners throughout NEPA. In 2014, co-founders Karen Moskel and Marjorie Adams created a Couch to 5K program to help women go from beginning runners, or even inactive, to running a 5K race in eight weeks. Since 2014 there have been seven different C25K groups, the seventh group wrapping up their training this month. Sport Shot caught up with Moskel to learn more about her running background, the Lady Striders and the C25K program.

I’d like to think this helps them with anything else they were contemplating but thought it was too far out of reach. It’s all about positivity. I also hope they keep running, of course!

What’s the most important thing to remember when running or training? It’s very important to take it slow. I saw this program last year where a trainer was promising to get people to a five mile race in five weeks. That’s just asking for an injury. It’s like weight loss. It’s not an overnight thing. It’s going to take time, and you’re going to walk, and you’re not going to be running in the front, but you can do it.
