Editor’s Note: Kindness Overpowers Rivalry The experience of stepping onto a high school field or court as a freshman could be a scary one. A bigger field, bigger players and more intense action – it’s a lot to take in. For Justin Olenginski, it was one he’ll never forget. The Dallas freshman was born blind and with special needs that prevented him from participating in athletic activities. But during the Dallas home game against Wyoming Area he was given a opportunity he’ll never forget. During the halftime break, his Dallas teammates and Wyoming Area opponents helped him score his first touchdown. After taking the handoff from the quarterback, his brother, Michael, a senior captain guided Justin down the field to score. After Justin reached the end zone, Michael lifted him in the air to celebrate. The crowd also showed their excitement with fireworks and chants for Justin’s achievement. While Justin’s touchdown didn’t count toward the game, and the
Mountaineers ultimately lost to the Warriors, it was a moment he’s sure to remember forever. While this story has touched the hearts of many, even gaining some national recognition, a part of the story that touches me is the kindness demonstrated by each team. Putting aside a rivalry to help someone achieve a dream is unbelievable, especially at the high school level. Congratulations to Justin and both the Mountaineers and Warriors on a job well done.

Audrianna’s 4th Annual Toy & Blanket Drive Benefits the children at Janet Weis Hospital, Geisinger Danville and their families.
The Northeast Tornandoes Soccer Club is looking for help in the Wyoming Valley soccer community with collecting new soccer balls and blankets for Audrianna’s Toy & Blanket Drive. Interested in helping? Drop off new items at the Wyoming Valley Sports Dome or the Riverfront Sports Complex to help support this great cause. Donations are being accepted November 1-December 7 Audrianna’s wish was for all the other kids in the hospital to have presents on Christmas morning. While Audrianna lost her battle with neuroblastoma cancer February 15, 2013, her wish lives on through this program and her mother, Angela Barto’s efforts. Angela knows what it was like to spend holidays in the hospital. Through this drive her hope is to make it easier on others. Parents of children who have been spending time at Janet Weis Children’s Hospital will be able to look through the donations and choose which ones they want for their children, making the hectic Christmas shopping season easier.

Senior Spotlight: Eddie Thomas By Ellen Hoffman
Eddie Thomas, a 2014 Wyoming Valley West graduate, molded his post-graduation life around his love of the sport he grew up playing. During his senior year, when faced with the decision every 18-year-old has, Thomas knew his future plans included soccer. For that reason, and others, he chose to become a Colonial at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh. He notes this as his proudest soccer achievement. “Committing to Robert Morris was when all of my hard work over the years finally paid off,” he said. “It was an unbelievable feeling knowing that I accomplished one of my dreams in life and it was nice proing everyone wrong who ever thought I wouldn’t be able to do this.” However, this decision didn’t come with a few obstacles. “D-1 soccer is 100 times more serious,” Thomas said. “You need to perform to the best of your ability every day and can never take days off.” Thomas, an outside back, says soccer has taught him to not sweat the small things – on or off the field. “It’s taught me how to keep looking for positives instead of dwelling on negatives.” A positive memory that Thomas will never forget was his collegiate debut against Wright State University. He played the second half of the game and finally, he says, got a taste of what the collegiate play is like outside of practice time. Before joining the team at Robert Morris, Thomas began his soccer career playing in intramural and club leagues in the Wyoming Valley, including the Plymouth Panthers intramural team, Wyoming Valley Soccer Club and Super Nova F.C. Since his early soccer days he has had a Division 1 career in the back of his mind, but never knew if it would happen. “I always dreamed of playing Division 1 but I was never sure if I could see myself actually achieving it.” While his youth soccer memories may not be as vivid as his high school games, he remembers his intramural days as a Plymouth Panther as the time where he fell in love with soccer. “I remember running around the field complex with my friends between games as a little kid and just having a lot of fun.” Between playing soccer as a kid and
maturing into an a collegiate level athlete, Thomas remembers the moment when he realized what he wanted his college days to look like. During a Nationals trip with his Super Nova F.S. team in Florida he saw what type of work it took to compete competitively at the Division 1 level. “That trip is where I played against some of the best players and teams I have seen,” he said. “After seeing them play I knew making it D-1 was going to take a lot of hard work. After that Florida trip I started working much harder toward my collegiate dreams and D-1 goals.” Not only did Thomas get a taste of what his career at RMU would be like on the field but also off the field. “For five days straight my life was soccer and friends and I knew that is what I wanted my college experience to be like.” While he is very happy with his decision to attend Robert Morris, there are a few things he misses about his time playing soccer in the Wyoming Valley. “I miss how easy-going high school soccer was,” he said. “I also miss playing night games at the [Spartan] Stadium.” Thomas is looking forward to building his soccer and academic career at Robert Morris over the next three and a half years. He is studying marketing and is eager to see what his future holds. Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of a 2014 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level.
