Editor’s Note: Support System By the time athletes make it to high school, most players have been teammates for years. They practice together every day and many have friendships off the field as well. Parents are often times connected outside of the stands too – creating a community or family setting for the entire team. I’ve witnessed this and have also been a part of a “family” team so I can understand just how special it is. This fall season, the Wyoming Area field hockey team came together to support a part of their extended family. Anne Gober, wife and mother of four, was killed in a car accident this summer. Two of her daughters are members of the field hockey team. Immediately, family members stepped in to help. The Wyoming Area Field Hockey Parents Association and the Wyoming Area Kiwanis Club created “Anne’s Angels,” a fundraiser to help support the Gober children’s continuing education. “Anne’s Angels” were seen at the senior night game in Exeter
where there were basket raffles, t-shirt sales and food stands for which all the proceeds went to the Gober children’s fund. A member of the WAFH family shared photos of the senior night celebrations. One image showed a banner in the stands. It read, “Wyoming Area = Family.” Since the girls have grown up playing together, so have the parents. Together they saw the players enter high school and not only grow on the field, but experience different life events. By creating this family, they had additional support, something that shines brightest during unfortunate events. It’s important to create these bonds, build these friendships and cherish the moments together. Come June, graduation will send these 11 seniors in different directions. Some will stay local, others will travel away to college, but no matter where life takes them, the players and parents will always know they have their WAFH family supporting them.

Senior Spotlight: Kady Gurtis By Ellen Hoffman Wyoming Valley West graduate Kady Gurtis knows all too well about overcoming obstacles. She hit her biggest one halfway through her senior field hockey season in high school. WVW was making a run toward District competition when just weeks before the regular season ended, Gurtis tore her ACL. “It happened right before playoffs so I couldn’t finish out the season, which included playing in the District Championship game,” she said. “That was extremely hard for me because the last thing I wanted to be doing was sitting on the sidelines.” But, since recovering from the injury, she’s only bettered her skill set, which she’s displaying on the field at Central Michigan University. “It took time to feel comfortable on the field again, but I eventually got to the point where I didn’t think about it so much,”she said. “Now I wear a functional brace for support when I play and it doesn’t even phase me.” Gurtis worked with a physical therapist during her senior year and was “back to playing again in no time.” She knew collegiate field hockey was the direction she wanted to go, even after the injury. “I knew from when I started playing in high school that I wanted to be able to carry my field hockey career to college,” she said. “I love the game too much to walk away from it so soon.” Gurtis said she picked CMU for a number of reasons: the location, the atmosphere and the people. “It fits everything that I wanted to have for a college experience.” She has faced challenges since she made the transition from high school play to the collegiate level. “I say the biggest transition would have to be the competition. Everyone you play against is good. Everyone is so talented and it is never an easy game.” She got her name on the board during one of the first games of the season. Although the Chippewas lost 3-1 to Virgina Commonwealth, Gurtis celebrated a personal accomplishment: her first goal at the Division 1 level. The day also happened to be her birthday. “It was a cool experience that I’ll never forget.” After playing field hockey since seventh grade, she’s learned to never quit. It’s something she’s carried with her throughout her athletic career.

‘Anne’s Angels’ Fundraiser Held at WA Members of WA field hockey team host event, senior night
“Never give up when you are passionate about something,” she said. In middle school, she had to make the decision to continue playing either field hockey or soccer – she couldn’t continue with both. “I chose field hockey because I wanted to try something different and enjoyed watching the sport. It ended up being one of the best decisions I ever made.” Gurtis has great memories from her time as a Spartan, saying one of the hardest things was leaving her high school teammates and friends. “We were all so close and it was awesome playing with some of my best friends.” She remembers celebrating with those friends during her junior year when the Spartans earned the “Key to Kingston” after defeating Wyoming Seminary. WVW captured the key during an overtime win against their hometown rivals. “I remember everyone out on the field had one of their best games and we conquered as a team,” she said. Gurtis knows that she couldn’t have the personal success without the help from the other ten girls on the field. “This sport has taught me what it feels like to be on a true team, to have ten other people on your side and how to fight through certain obstacles together.” Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2015 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level. The Wyoming Area Field Hockey Parents Association and the Wyoming Area Kiwanis Club presented the “Anne’s Angels” fundraiser during a Wyoming Area home field hockey game against Abington Heights. The event was hosted to raise money for the Gober children, whose mother, Anne, passed away this summer after a car accident. The Gober Children Educational Fund was started to support the children, Julia, Grace, Abigail and Justin Thomas, in their continued education. Grace and Abigail are members of the field hockey team. The night began with recognition of the team’s senior players with senior night festivities. Funds throughout the night from a basket raffle, t-shirt sale and food and drink sale would go directly to the Educational Fund. The opposing team, Abington Heights, also showed their support for the Gober family. During the week leading up to the game, the team held a coin drop in school to raise money for the family. Members of the team presented the Gobers with a check and flowers after the senior night celebrations. The Warriors captured an 8-0 win to round out the evening. Pictured above, top to bottom, Grace and father, Joe Gober, pose for a photo during senior night honors. Seniors and parents gather for a photo after recognizing each senior member of the team. The starting line up huddle together before the start of the game.
