Editor’s Note: Holiday Season Fitness I’d say many people can agree that getting into (and sticking with) a workout routine is challenging. It’s tough balancing work or school with social activities and other commitments. This only becomes more difficult during the holiday season when there is even more on the calendar. Plus, this is the time we need to be burning off all the desserts we’re consuming at holiday functions. This holiday season I’m trying to stay on top of my workout regime. Even if it’s not my normal routine, I’m trying to make sure I’m getting some sort of exercise regularly. Women’s Health Magazine came up with a list of quick 20-minute cardio sessions that can be squeezed in to any hectic schedule: 1. Jumping Jacks 2. Squat Jumps 3. Side-to-Side Hops 4. Burpees The great thing about these exercises is that even if you’re traveling this holiday season, you can complete these quick exercises outside of the gym.

If you are able to find time to get to the gym, even if just for 30 minutes, Women’s Health Magazine says it’s well worth it. “In an Australian study, women who cranked out high-intensity interval training three days a week for 20 minutes (for 15 weeks) shed more fat than those who exercised for 40 minutes at a lower intensity over the same period.” It’s important, Women’s Health Magazine says, is to fire up your metabolism in order to fasttrack your results. If traveling is part of your schedule, Women’s Health Magazine says remembering to stretch is key. Long car rides or cross-country flights can make your muscles tighter than ever, according to the magazine. Make sure to stretch regularly to avoid any post-travel discomfort. No matter your plans this holiday season, make sure to schedule some cardio time and not fall completely off track of your normal routine. That makes it just that much harder to get back at it come the New Year.

Senior Spotlight: Tiffany Zukosky By Ellen Hoffman

Like many children, Tiffany Zukosky joined different teams or clubs during her youth based on her parents’ decisions. Some activities only last a short time, while others could stick for years. When she was just six-years-old, her parents signed her up for a Back Mountain intramural soccer team. She was apprehensive at first, saying she didn’t want to go even though her older sister would be right by her side. But, her outlook on soccer changed that day. “I came home and told my parents I wanted to play soccer every day because I loved it so much,” she said. “I’ve never looked back.” The 2016 Dallas High School graduate has followed her own request. She played soccer throughout her schooling years and decided she didn’t want her soccer career to end after her senior season. She joined the American University Women’s Soccer team this fall as a freshman. “It has been my dream since I started playing soccer to go D1.” Zukosky says she’s lucky that her parents were so supportive of her passion for soccer. “I wouldn’t have gotten here without my parents driving me all over the place and always supporting me,” she said. “I am very lucky.” Zukosky had success throughout her high school soccer career. In her four seasons as a Mountaineer, she helped lead the team to just four Wyoming Valley Conference losses, a District Championship and two appearances in the State playoffs. She says one of her most memorable moments of her high school career was making it to the State tournament her senior season where the game was decided through penalty kicks. The Mountaineers ended the game on top. “No one expected us to win. It was the greatest thing ever and I’ll never forget that feeling.” Individually, she’s also recorded success. During her senior year she netted 11 goals and ended her high school career with a school record - most career assists at 69. “I was so happy and knew that that was an accomplishment I would have for the rest of my life.” With this success and years of experience, she’s still learned “so much” from her first

baseball & softball winter camps season at American University. “This level of soccer has shown me that being a team is so important. You win and lose together.” She’s also had to adjust to the quicker pace of the Division 1 level. “You need to know what you are are going to do way before you get the ball,” she said. “You always need to be on your toes.” She said facing off against girls between 18-22 years old made the physical aspect of the game something she needed to work on. “The speed of play and physicality was an adjustment for me.” No matter the outcome of the game, Zukosky said her coaches, teammates and mentors have always taught her to “win and lose with dignity.” Zukosky had a number of high notes during her soccer career but she says it’s the way you handle yourself in the tough situations that make you into a great player. “I tend to see the good side in situations and try to keep everyone looking up and not have their heads go down,” she said. Zukosky is studying biology at AU and plans to earn her masters degree. Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2016 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level. TIME OUT with Jack Zardecki, Dallas By Ellen Hoffman

Dallas junior Jack Zardecki returned for the fall cross country season with a few different goals – both individual and team. One of those goals was to repeat last year’s success and stand atop the State Championship medal stand at the end of the season. The Mountaineers made it back to the top earning another State Championship title after an undefeated regular season and a District 2 title. Zardecki lead the way for the Mountaineers earning second place at the District 2 level and improving his States finish – last season he medaled for 25th place, this year his medal reflected his seventh place finish. Now, Zardecki moves into the winter track season. Read on to see what he has to say about his successful cross country season and plans for the future. How did you become

interested in competitive running? I became interested when my neighbor first asked me to join and I have been hooked ever since. Tell me about how it felt placing second at the District 2 Class 2A cross country championship? After Districts I was pleased with my performance but not completely satisfied. I unfortunately happened to catch a cold three days before the meet, which I think affected my performance slightly. Do you have any personal and/or team goals for next season? Thinking about next season is quite far away but I think we are looking to get one more District title and we are going to fight for

looking at colleges to see where I can find the major I would like, as well as a team I would fit into.

Dallas’ Jack Zardecki - photo by Frank Lauri

the State title one last time. Do you see yourself running competitively in college? I do intend to run in college. I have just been searching around and

What has been your most proud achievement? Most likely States this season. I was most proud that I got top ten in the state and that was definitely one of my goals. I also happened to be able to count some runners from my team to almost ensure that we once again won the State title, which was a huge accomplishment for the team as well as each of us individually. What season do you enjoy competing in the most? I enjoy cross country the most because I enjoy the summer training and the mileage I have to achieve.

What events do you run in track? What are you looking forward to for that season? In track I mostly focus on the 3200m and my coach often throws me into the other distance events. Additionally, I’m looking forward to that District meet more than any other. One word or phrase that describes your training routine, and how. Ambitious – everyday you have to go out and get what you want to achieve because your training foreshadows your racing. I love the training. Training’s the hard part; racing’s the easy part. Favorite running area/trail in the Wyoming Valley? Most likely the Back Mountain Trail because it’s just a relaxing run for me.
