Editor’s Note: Super Spartans I spent my middle school and high school years attending Friday night football games at Spartan Stadium. During those games I went for the social aspect – to hang out with friends and roam around the stadium – barely paying attention to the final score of the game. Friday, November 27 I returned to Spartan Stadium to check out the undefeated Spartan team take on the Parkland Trojans in the District 2-11 Class AAAA Subregional Championship Game. I have to admit, although that game ended the Spartan’s 2015 season, I’m glad it was my first football game back since my senior year. The Spartans should feel so proud of what they accomplished. This season they tied the schoolrecord for wins with 12 and are only the third team in school history to finish with an undefeated regular season. The stands were the most crowded I’ve ever seen. The ticket line spanned almost the entire block of Tioga Avenue before kick off and even into the first quarter.
I was not the only alumni at the game. I saw so many former Spartans walking through the stands ready to cheer on the current team. That just shows how proud the community is of this team. At the beginning of the second quarter, down 14-7, the stands erupted when Sean Judge returned an interception 103 yards for a touchdown making it a tie game. The Spartans seemed like they were ready to keep up with their thirteenth opponent. Unfortunately, Parkland surged ahead making it 49-14 by halftime. I was watching from the sidelines and typically, with a lead like that, the stands would start emptying out. Not for the Spartans. Until the completion of the game, the fans were there, cheering them on. While the season did not end how the Wyoming Valley West team and community was hoping for, this team has nothing to be sorry about. They made all Spartans, current and past, feel proud of their alma mater. Check out photos of their District run on pages 12 and 13.

Comets Showcase Competitive Spirit

Pictured at left are first row: Sarah Estok, Haley Lyle, Morgan Swartwood Second row: Marielle McDonald, Lauren Balough, Skyler Davis, Christina Mercadante Third row: Julianna Geib,Victoria Smolenak, Noah Dean, Alexandria Smolenak, Megan Hudock, Krystin Thomas.
Lindsey Oremus is off and running – literally. The 2015 Dallas graduate is settled in to her first semester at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. Oremus is a member of the cross country and track teams and she just wrapped up her first collegiate season. “These have been the best three months of my life – it really has been,” she said. “I have had more fun here and some of the best times. It’s been such an incredible experience.” And it’s only her first semester. To most, her schedule sounds jam packed – training in cross country practice, handling course work as an interdisciplinary health services major, figuring out how to live away from home – but to Oremus, she’s more relaxed now than she was in high school. “It’s definitely a lot less stressful running
family hopped in the car and drove to Phila-
here than it was running in high school only because in high school I kind of felt that I had to do well to get into college and that was the end goal. So once I got here, I was here.” But that doesn’t mean she’s slowing down at all. During high school, she earned the 2014 PIAA State Cross Country silver medal and proved herself as one of the top runners in the state. Now, she says, the stress of being at the top is gone. “Before I would say that I was higher up in the state, you know, Ally Rome and I were some of the top runners in the state and there was so much pressure,” she said. “But now, in college, I’m just another Division 1 athlete. I’m just another runner. Of course I want to be the best and I’m going to continue to work at it and be the best I can be, but there are no expectations.” The alleviated stress hasn’t hurt the Division 1 runner. During a Regional meet this season she broke her personal record in two runs. “It was the first time I went out not super, super hard. I went out more relaxed and basically PR’ed in two races,” she said. “It was definitely my most memorable moment because when I got done I was beaming.” When looking at colleges, Oremus browsed larger schools like University of Pittsburgh, University of Delaware and East Carolina University. She received a letter from St. Joe’s during her junior year and tossed it in with the other collegiate mail she collected. It wasn’t until her senior year of high school that she considered the Philadelphia school. She reached out to the coach and scheduled an overnight visit. After winter weather cancelled three scheduled visits, the Oremus
delphia anyway. “It was negative four degrees and I got on campus and I was like, ‘This is the place for me.’ I didn’t have to take the tour or anything. I knew this was it.” Oremus, now part of the cross country and track teams, is completely content with her college decision. “I couldn’t have picked a better school for me. I’m so happy with my choice.” One decision she can’t make is choosing which sport she enjoys more, cross country or track. “I honestly can’t tell you which one I love more. They are both my favorite thing in the entire world.” She enjoys the changing courses that XC offers and also the tight knit team. Since the cross country team is smaller than track, she looks at her teammates as family. “Everyone does the same thing in cross so you’re all getting on the line together to run, which is nice.” For track, she couldn’t emphasize enough how much she loves going fast. “You put me on the track and tell me to run a mile and I’m going to go so hard in the mile. I give everything I have.” No matter the course or the length of the run, Oremus is going to give it her all. “I’m so comfortable and happy running with this group. I think I’ve just learned how to relax and appreciate life day by day.” Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2015 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level.
