Editor’s Note: Running Resolution Last January I created a New Years Resolution. As Sport Shot readers know, my resolution was to train for and complete a 5K. I can happily say I was successful in completing my 2015 New Years Resolution – I ran two 5K’s back to back! Last January I thought this was a feat that would be difficult for me. In part it was, but thanks to the Wyoming Valley Lady Striders I achieved my goal. I had never been one for running. In fact, I hated it. I played soccer throughout school but never enjoyed our long runs or even our warm-ups. Something I frequently used to say was that I didn’t like running without a purpose. Meaning, if I wasn’t chasing a soccer ball, it wasn’t worth it. After joining the Lady Striders and running three times a week with a group of dedicated ladies, it changed my views on what running means to me. My running trailed off after training with the Lady Striders and both 5K’s. I ran with my sister in the summer months

after the program ended, but then she went back to college in Philadelphia, so I slacked off because I didn’t have a buddy or group pushing me through a run. But, something odd happened in October – I missed running. Me? Miss running. I still kind of laugh thinking that. But it’s true! I now [voluntarily] go to the gym to run. It seems like the simplest thing but it’s big for me, the girl who at the age of four told my mother I didn’t want to play soccer because of how much running was involved. Now I’m pushing myself to continue this regular running routine and I’m trying to come up with a new running resolution for 2016. I know that I need to build up my endurance, so ideally my resolution would be geared toward that. It’s something I need to give some thought to, but am open to suggestions from any long-time runners out there! Send me running recommendations for my 2016 resolution at wyomingvalleysportshot @gmail.com. Don’t let me down!

Senior Spotlight: Aaron Kliamovich By Ellen Hoffman

As a high school senior looking at colleges, there is a lot to consider: scholastic program, location, financial aid, athletics. Wyoming Seminary senior Aaron Kliamovich considered all that, but at the top of his list was another bullet point: what school can help me achieve my goals of Olympic wrestling? After a 14-hour car ride to Northern Michigan University, the answer was simple. “From the start they [Northern Michigan coaches] had a lot of faith in me. They believe that I can be a World Champion, or an Olympic Champion, that is if I came there and wrestled for them.” Kliamovich decided that this was the location he wanted to continue his wrestling career. One change, though, would be the type of wrestling he’d be practicing. Northern Michigan University is the Olympic Training Site for Team USA. Olympic wrestlers perform Greco-Roman style wrestling, which is using only upper body moves. High school and most other collegiate wrestling programs are folkstyle, where competitors can use both their arms and legs. Kliamovich says he likes the Greco-Roman style because it’s “the closest thing to a fight and I like feeling in control and the whole rush of it.” He is looking forward to his next trip to Michigan where he’ll be able to get back into the Greco-style of wrestling. His next visit will be in the summer when Team Iran visits. “Coach Ron Hermann and his staff know what tweaks I have to make to become a World or Olympic Champion,” he said. “When Team Iran is there Coach Hermann wants me to wrestle one specific guy knowing that that will help me in some areas of my Greco wrestling.” That won’t be Kliamovich’s first time on a mat in Michigan. During his official visit he wrestled a member of the current Northern Michigan team, even scoring a point on him. “I scored on one of the best guys in the room and immediately earned the respect of the team.” He knows training with the team at Northern Michigan will help catapult is Olympic aspirations. He will not only be competing against the best in the country, but teams from around the world. During his first visit Team Puerto Rico was on site. “The little details that each country knows and the different techniques they use, it’s really awesome to be able to experience that.”

Kliamovich is excited what’s in store for his collegiate years, but also has his senior season at Wyoming Seminary to look forward to. After attending Dallas High School for his freshman year, he transferred to Wyoming Seminary. His father encouraged him to look into the wrestling program at Wyoming Seminary. And, after Kliamovich realized he was loosing his drilling partner at Dallas, he agreed to talk with the coaches and staff at Wyoming Seminary to see what they had to offer him. “The next fall, I was here,” he said with a smile. “Most definitely a worthwhile decision.” The past two seasons due to injury or illness, Kliamovich was unable to compete in the Prep States and Prep National competitions. That is what he says he is most looking forward to in his last high school season. “I know I have what it takes to be a Prep National Champion, I’ve been hearing that for two years now and I think it’s time I got a chance to go and fulfill that.” In August, Kliamovich will pack up and head to Northern Michigan, something he is sure is the right decision. “I know that by going to Northern Michigan I’m going to get even better,” he said. “Like a World Champion or Olympic Champion level. It’s so exciting.” Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2015 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level.
