2017 CENTRAL COAST PHOTOGRAPHIC PRIZE
EXPOSURE 2017 CENTRAL COAST PHOTOGRAPHIC PRIZE
Exposure is the Central Coast’s annual, acquisitive prize and public exhibition. The competition aims to promote the art of photography and to showcase still-based works. Amateur and emerging photographers are invited to enter and the competition is open nationally. Cash prizes are awarded to the most outstanding images with a pool totaling $4400. The Prize has grown over the past 4 years and 2017 will mark a number of advances.
A regional showcase
The Prize will become a major event on the Central Coast Arts Calendar moving outside the Wyong Shire to the wider region. Renowned local photographers have gained the industry’s attention and led the way for emerging talent. Central Coast Council recognises the importance of investing in the careers of local photographers. The Prize is used to help entrants develop their creative practice and produce works of an exhibition-standard. One award is geographically based to support resident photographers and attract visitors to our area.
Young photographers
This year The Prize aims to showcase and develop young photographers. In the past, entrants under the age of 24 years have represented 10% of finalists. They have shown works of an exceptional standard and have made a valued contribution. In 2017 there will be an additional $300 awarded to an Emerging Young Talent.
Art House, Wyong
To celebrate the expansion of The Prize, this year’s exhibition will be held at The Art House, Wyong. The Art House is a new cultural and arts venue right in the heart of the Central Coast. 145 of the most outstanding images will be exhibited here during the public exhibition.

“It was a really interesting process to judge the competition. I very much enjoyed viewing the diversity of subject matter and visual interpretation of our world from all photographers. We were asked to judge the overall impact of each image. I was looking for images which made me think or made me feel. I was looking for images which told a story or incited emotion in me. My life experiences will obviously inform my emotional response to images, and while I am appreciative of technical prowess in photography (and there were many images which were technically outstanding), my interest is more in the storytelling ability of a photograph and its affect. The quality overall was very high and it was wonderful to have the opportunity to view so many thoughtfully made and thought-provoking images.” Sisters Sarah Harris
2017 Judge, Justine Cogan
“The quality of the work submitted was of a high standard and therefore made judging quite challenging. Every judge has his or her favourite style of photography, however, I tried to score each photograph on its merits rather than if I liked the particular style or not. In allocating points at the top end of the spectrum, I had to pay particular attention to finer detail i.e. a landscape photograph may have been jaw dropping, but for me, a straight horizon line might have been the difference between receiving a top mark and losing a mark, similarly cropping in other styles of shots. For those that did not make final selection I encourage them not to be despondent as there may have only been one mark or so between the combined judges score between being selected and not. On finishing, I would like to point out one particular point: judges opinions are not the be all and end all. What might have not made the cut for me might very well have made it for another judge. They are all individual opinions, the same different people like different styles of paintings.” 2017 Judge, Brad Page 2017 CENTRAL COAST PHOTOGRAPHIC PRIZE 2017 CENTRAL COAST PHOTOGRAPHIC PRIZE

The volume of entries not only demonstrates the popularity and success of the Exposure Competition, but the scope of photographs entered into the various categories reveals the Central Coast resident’s passion for their local environment and community. It was impressive to see the level of expertise and photographic ‘know how’ from so many amateur and emerging photographers across the region. In selecting and judging the photographs, I looked for technical ability with strong composition, but images that also offered original ways of communicating ideas about people and place. 2017 Judge, Cassandra Hard Lawrie 27
