Monday, January 17, 2022 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. On this day we celebrate the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to a divided nation. A leader of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and ‘60s, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a champion of racial justice and equality who envisioned a color-blind society, and who led a non-violent crusade to help make that vision a reality. Dr. King was a Baptist pastor who used his voice to urge an end to segregation and inequality. During the 1960s he participated in non-violent protests throughout the South, creating change with organized sit-ins, marches, and peaceful demonstrations that highlighted issues of inequality. In 1963, his “I Have a Dream” speech was delivered to over 250,000 people gathered on the National Mall in Washington. In this powerful speech he shared his vision of a free and equal world for all people, regardless of race. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, the youngest person to ever receive this prestigious honor. On April 4, 1968, Dr. King was assassinated outside his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee. The campaign for a federal holiday honoring Dr. King began shortly after his death. In August of 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed the MLK Day bill into law, declaring the third Monday of January as the federal holiday known as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The holiday was ﬁrst observed three years later, although it was not observed by all states until the year 2000. While MLK Day is certainly a day of remembrance and tribute, it’s also the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service where all Americans are urged to work together to strengthen and improve their communities. Participation in the MLK Day of Service has steadily grown over the past decade, with hundreds of thousands of Americans each year engaging in projects such as tutoring and mentoring children, painting schools and senior centers, delivering meals, and building homes. While progress has been made in creating Dr. King’s vision of equality and justice, we can always do more. The Laramie County School District 1 Report to Stakeholders | Cheyenne, Wyoming

Team assists students, families with kindergarten transition

ach year, approximately 1,200 students start kindergarten and a smooth transition lays the groundwork for their successful academic career. Laramie County School District 1’s Preschool to School Transition Team is hosting Kindergarten Transition Parent Nights every third Thursday of the month until May 2022. According to LCSD1 Preschool Liaison Nicole Bolinger, the Preschool to School Transition Team along with LCSD1 has always been involved with students who are heading to kindergarten with special education and have always ensured that they have a smooth transition with their Individual Education Plan (IEP) services. “Our goal is to get children excited about school,” Bolinger said. “Ultimately, we want to send them off to kindergarten prepared and ready to be successful lifelong learners.” Last year, the team was able to expand their efforts to include organizing transition activities for all students and their families who are heading to kindergarten while continuing to be involved with transition planning for all students with disabilities. The Wyoming Department of Education awarded the Preschool to School Transition team with a grant that allowed for the

expansion and enabled the team to be involved with the community more. “This grant has allowed for us to welcome families to LCSD1, work with preschools, have parent nights and obtain Kindergarten Readiness Kits,” Bolinger said. “It has also allowed for us to create a partnership with ReadyRosie and provide transition activities that families were seeking prior to kindergarten.” ReadyRosie is an educational resource tool which contains hundreds of videos demonstrating activities that parents can do at home with their children. It also provides games and videos that support parents and their children in learning. This tool is one the Preschool to School Transition Team recommends parents sign up for to help prepare their children for kindergarten. When parents attend Kindergarten Transition Parent Nights, they are provided with the opportunity to sign up with ReadyRosie for free. “For our Jan. 20 event, we will be focusing on speech and language development,” Preschool Liaison Michelle Rossman said. “Families will have the opportunity to learn from a speech language pathologist as they are presented information about the topic. Dinner will be provided and if parents need to bring their children, then we have a space where we can watch their kids and keep them entertained.”

Laramie County School District 1’s Preschool to School Transition Team handed out kindergarten readiness kits during parent nights. They partnered with ReadyRosie to give families transition activities to prepare them for kindergarten.

Preschool Liaison Brent Young said that these nights also allow for parents to do some networking. “After the presentation from the speech language pathologist, parents will have the opportunity to ask any questions about the transition from preschool to kindergarten and get answers,” he said. “Kindergarten transition is a big milestone both in a child’s life and for the family,” said Bolinger. “The year before kindergarten is a time for adjustment as a child becomes more independent and develops readiness skills needed for a smooth transition to school. We want to provide the opportunities for families, schools and community agencies to work together and build this positive foundation to ensure a smooth beginning to kindergarten and ultimately LCSD1.” Parents are invited to attend the following Parent Nights from 5:30–7:30 p.m. on Jan. 20—Speech/Language Development; Feb. 17—Motor Development; March 17—Early Literacy; and May 19— Registration. A PACA is a large rodent ENDEMIC to South and Central America. At one point they were grouped with the AGOUTI family of rodents, but now the biologists have placed them in their own family, of which they are the only GENUS. PACAS have white dots and stripes in their brown fur, short ears, and short tails. Growing almost three feet long, they are the sixth-largest rodent in the world, after the CAPYBARA; the COYPU or NUTRIA; the MUSHRAT or MUSKRAT; and the MARA of Patagonia. One World Prairie Guitar Contest Concert

Laramie County Library will host the third annual One World Prairie Guitar Contest in the Cottonwood Room, 2200 Pioneer Avenue, from 10:00am to 4:00pm, on Saturday, January 22. Musicians of all ages are invited to compete in any of the contest’s five categories: Acoustic, classical, electric, miscellaneous stringed instrument excluding piano and 12 and under. The contest will conclude with a celebratory One World Prairie Guitar Concert consisting of performances by the winners at 6:00pm in the Cottonwood Room. The annual event is presented in partnership with the Cheyenne Guitar Society and is funded by the Laramie County Library Foundation through an anonymous donor with a passion for arts, music and the Laramie County community. Silent Witness Crime of the Week

On 12/5/21 at approximately 5:00pm, a male assaulted an owner of a business which is located in the 1500 Block of West Lincolnway. The male was described as Hispanic male with a medium build and had a mustache. The male suspect took the owner’s cellphone and proceeded across the street where he took a vehicle which was left running. The vehicle was eventually recovered at a different business. A stilled image from surveillance footage was obtained of the suspect involved in these crimes. The suspect is believed to frequent several businesses located on the west side of Cheyenne.
