Led by an impressive group of returning starters, including Nick Mirich and all-state guard Eric Oliver, the T-Birds look to improve on the current trend of coming up short. This year the expectations are clear. The team has had moments of greatness so far, but there is still considerable improvements to be made between now and March. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good,â&#x20AC;? Oliver said in an interview with the Casper Star-Tribune. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve still got a lot of learning to do, obviously, but we got a lot of young guys and a lot of older guys with some experience. Things are still gelling, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got a lot of work to do.â&#x20AC;? The T-Birds missed the playoffs in 2016 and lost to Rock Springs in the state quarterďŹ nals last year. Now there is only one acceptable goal for 2018. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Win state,â&#x20AC;? Oliver said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve still got a lot of work to do this early in the season, but winning state is our number one goal.â&#x20AC;?

Over the last decade or so, the Lady T-Bird basketball program has become one of the strongest programs in the state. Playing for gold on the last Saturday of the state tournament is expected. While the team has state titles only from 2010 and 2017, they have played in the championship game seven times since 2004. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team is expecting more of the same thing. While this group ďŹ nds themselves in the middle of the pack offensively (51.1 points/ game), they are #3 in the state in defense (43.8 points/game). Stingy defense and a generous attitude on offense keeps the individual stats low, but the team stats in the top half of the state. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We started converting defense into offense, and that helped a lot,â&#x20AC;? East coach Rusty Horsley said in an interview with wyosports.net. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had to turn our pressure up, and we had some kids step up and do some really good things.â&#x20AC;? Seniors Makenzee Fagenbush and Jazzy Espinoza and juniors Kalee McEwan and Ashlee Rotert lead a talented group that can go toe-to-toe with anyone in the state.
