Achieving greatness is an expectation at East High. And, every year, East hangs another banner or earns a #1-ranking. But what makes this work is the dedication and effort from everyone. From the teachers to the coaches to the studentathletes and the entire East High community, there are high expectations and a dedication to the task. December brought about a new sports season on the high school scene and another season of winning in T-Bird Nation. Both basketball teams had an athlete hit their 1000th point in their career, the boys and girls wrestling teams dominated at one of the state’s biggest tournaments, and three cheerleaders earned all-state recognition.

Basketball recognizes the newest members of the 1,000-point club

Both the girls and boys teams loaded up the busses and headed to Douglas with one mission – winning. Both teams returned home as champions. Both squads expected success, but no one was sure the Thunderbirds could pull off a sweep. “Shane Shatto is usually a pretty good indicator at how the season will go because it’s like the third biggest tournament we go to, behind Ron Thon and State,” says 190-pounder Lance Davis, 11. “It was very exciting that both teams won because it’s a good indicator that both teams should do well.” Senior Gracin Goff says this tournament is a great indicator of what should happen for the girls through the season and into State. It’s also a good indicator of the competition they will see. This is her second time competing at this tournament, and she placed 2nd in the 190-weight class. “It’s unbelievable the amount of change that I have seen in our girls program this year,” says Goff. “I’m so proud of each and everyone of them for trying something new and working so hard at it.” Top finishes for the boys include Trace Eldridge (3rd, 106 lb), Sammy Sanchez (2nd, 113), Kozad Porter (1st, 132 lb), Kolby Williams (2nd, 138 lb), Colby Olson (2nd, 190 lb), Hayden Van Dell (3rd, 215 lb), and Charlie Green (3rd, 285). Top finishes for the girls include Bree Padilla (3rd, 100 lb), Halley House (2nd, 130 lb), Kaelyn Ronnau (3rd, 155 lb), Gracin Goff (2nd, 190 lb), and Joci Davis (3rd, 235 lb).

Public Schools Chronicle

As one of the state’s best athletes, and a future Wyoming Cowboy football player, Drew Jackson did what Drew does best – score. Whether on the football field or the basketball court, Jackson is sure to be found leading his team in the scoring column. On December 7, the story was no different, Jackson, all-state guard for Coach Rusty Horsley, posted his 1,000th career point. In just another night in the stat column, Jackson scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and four steals to help Cheyenne East to a 57-40 victory over Jackson. On the girls’ side, Coach Eric Westling knows leadership makes all the difference in his fast-paced offense and pressurestyle defense. And the best leader he has, senior guard Bradie Schlabs, posted her 1,000th point on January 11. A 3-pointer early in the third quarter allowed Schlabs to surpass 1,000 career points, as East went on to rout visiting Riverton 55-30. “I’ve never really had a huge focus on how many points I’ve scored,” Schlabs said. “I didn’t know until after the game until coach told me.” The three-time all-state player says it was exciting to hit 1000 points, but she knows how it happened. “I got there through a lot of dedication,” she says. “My teammates helped a lot with this. They were getting rebounds, and help setting me up for these shots.” Even when hitting that final point, Schlabs is a leader in recognizing the hard work and efforts of her teammates.

Boys and girls teamwork in Shane Shatto Tournament

Boys that join East wrestling learn there is a tradition of being one of the toughest programs in the state, and a team that is always in the hunt for a title. Last year, after a long state-wide debate, girls wrestling was finally offered as a varsity sport as well. It took no time at all for Coach Thad Trujillo to begin building a girls’ program. This year, Riley Stringer was brought in as the head coach for the girls, and the investment is paying off. The biggest payoff so far this year is both squads earning championships at the highly-regarded Shane Shatto Tournament in Douglas.

East Cheer makes all the difference

The one group you will always find at every event, at all times of the day, in all kinds of weather, is the East High Cheer team. This group works endlessly to build school spirit and support students and athletes. In recognition of their hard work and talent, Faith VanDemark, Nicole Sanford and Taylar Scott were all recognized as all-state cheerleaders. This is VanDemark’s third all-state honor. Fifty-six girls from 4A schools around the state had live tryouts via Zoom after material was sent to them by University of Wyoming cheerleaders. Candidates had to perform a cheer, a dance, a combination jump, standing and running tumbling and a stunt sequence. Twenty-two girls were chosen for the 4A all-girl all-state squad.

Birdwatching with Cheyenne Audubon

Join Cheyenne Audubon members on a free field trip January 20 to the Tie City trailhead in the Medicine Bow National Forest. The Wyoming Historical Society is actively planning its 2025 Calendar. The 2025 Calendar theme is Wyoming families partaking in events and activities. The society is asking for historic photograph submissions to be featured in the calendar. It includes a snippet on each day noting “what happened and where.” The tidbits range from the serious to the unbelievable, but all newsworthy in their day! Photographs must be at least 5 inches tall by 7 inches wide landscape format or be able to be cropped to that ratio. Photographs, either physical or a digital scan at 600 dpi, must be received by February 1. People, location, and, if possible, the activity, should be identified with submission. Original photographs will be returned. Final photographs will be selected by the Wyoming Historical Society’s Calendar committee. Car Show Accepting Local Charity Applications

The Fourth Annual Charity Classic Car Show, Cars, Cigars, Guitars - Under the Stars, was held last year on August 19. The event was a huge success, raising money for local charities.
