Public Schools Chronicle Do You Believe in Miracles?

Many people believe that a miracle is only something rare that happens, something extraordinary that cannot be explained by anything other than a higher power being an attribute. While this is true, miracles come in all different shapes and sizes and happen more often than we realize. If we were to take a moment and look around, we would see that they are truly everywhere, right in front of us. Take a look around and notice the everyday miracles that change the atmosphere, the true wonder of the world, and look into the “impossible” miracles. One may be happening right in front of your eyes, but you will never see it if you aren’t open to it.

When you wake up in the morning, how does it happen? What makes it possible for you to open your eyes and begin your day? In what way were you able to do that on your own? Now what about the feeling that you get when someone genuinely smiles at you and asks how you are doing? Although these things may seem small, they are all miracles in their own way. The simple, everyday acts of kindness or support can be just what someone needed to get through that moment, even if they don’t realize it. Throughout my life I have encountered many miracles that I didn’t recognize as miracles at the time. It wasn’t until I started paying closer attention that I realized that every little feel-good thing is one. When someone opens the door for you, compliments you, or someone simply being kind—these are all miracles. For instance, whenever I genuinely smile at someone and they smile back with a joyful smile, it’s a moment that I didn’t know I needed but am so grateful that I got. Miracles are aways here, you just have to be willing to see them. It’s like what Albert Einstein said, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” Imagine what might change if we choose to see everything as a miracle. See how it could change your world view.

Another miracle is the way that the world works. The universe is perfectly set to where life can exist. There is an article called The Universe is Fine-Tuned, and Our Existence is the Proof that states, “A Universe with too much matter-and-energy for its expansion rate will recollapse in short order; a Universe with too little will expand into oblivion before it’s possible to even form atoms. Yet not only has our Universe neither recollapsed nor failed to yield atoms, but even today, some 13.8 billion years after the Big Bang, those two sides of the equation appear to be perfectly in balance.” Not only was the world perfectly set, but it has stayed perfectly set. Nobody can say that it is just a coincidence, that is a miracle. And then there is the beauty of this world that is a wonder. Going out somewhere and just looking at nature is so miraculous. I mean how did everything come about? How was that sunrise or sunset so perfect on the day you were

Trader’s Shopper’s Guide

falling off the edge? How did the sky get so blue and how does the warmth of the sun bring so much joy? How did we end up the perfect distance away from the sun that we don’t instantly die? Yes, there are scientific reasons behind most of these things, but they don’t answer the deeper question of why. The world is truly a mystery and that is what makes it a miracle.

Finally, consider all of the impossible healings that have been documented in just the past 25 years. Times where people’s lives were changed forever through the impossible becoming possible. Stories of people who shouldn’t have lived through what they’d gone through, but they did. Stories of people becoming a new person because they chose to see what they had overcome instead of dwelling on what they had gone through. One such story is that of a girl named Annabel Beam that randomly got sick one day and nobody understood how. After episodes of throwing up and multiple visits to the emergency room, they found out that she had a rare condition called pseudo-obstruction motility disorder. This is where coordinated contractions in the intestinal track become altered and inefficient. In other words, her intestines were unable to function properly, and she was in pain all the time. She got so sick that her family and friends didn’t think that she was gonna make it. But one day when she was at home, her and her older sister were playing and decided to climb a tree. When they were up in the tree, the tree branch they were sitting on had started to snap, so her sister told her to go sit in a hole part of the tree so that she could go around her and help her down. But as Annabel went to sit down the hole fell through and Annabel fell 30 feet down the rotted-out trunk of the Cotton wood tree headfirst. After 5 hours of rescue efforts, she was pulled out from the tree— and when she was examined there was no trace of injury at all! Not only that, but she had been healed of her rare incurable condition! That is absolutely insane and should be impossible to even fathom, but it happened, and she is now a healthy 22-year-old that hasn’t had problems since before the fall. This is a miracle that really challenges what we think we know about the limits of possibility. Over the next week, I challenge you to start looking at all things as if they are miracles and see how your perspective starts to change. Start to be aware of the things going on around you and see how they play out. Miracles are all around, in everyone and everything. If we don’t stop to take a look around every once in awhile, we will miss it. As Albert Einstein says, “Don’t wait for miracles, your whole life is a miracle.” So, the next time that you encounter something that can be hard to see as good, don’t wait for a miracle to come out of it, see the miracle in it.

Shawny Lee Smith Homicide

On Feb. 8, 2003, the body of 32-year-old Shawny Lee Smith was found near Highway 85 in Weld County just 1/4 mile from the Wyoming state line. Investigators determined that Smith was the victim of a homicide either late on the night of February 6 or early on February 7. She was last seen at the Cowboy South Bar at 317 South Greeley Highway. The location is now home to the Outlaw Saloon.

Shawny’s death left behind grieving family and friends, including her two children, who have been without answers for over two decades. Unfortunately, Shawny’s mother passed away without ever knowing what happened to her daughter. Today, we are asking for the public’s help in finding those answers.

Anyone with information on the case willing to come forward can contact “Silent Witness” at 638-TIPS, e-mail www.silentwitnesslaramiecounty.com or contact Law Enforcement authorities. Callers will remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
