Charles “Charlie” Rogers 1931-2014

Charles Matthew Rogers, 92, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Charles was born Januar y 30, 1922 to Scott and Cheska (Michel) Rogers in Chicago, Illinois, the oldest of four children. He graduated from Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in 1941

Charles served in the U.S. military in WWII as a medic. He met his beautiful bride and wife of 65 years, Kate Angelie Johansson, in the war and they were later married in Springfield, Illinois

In 1960, Charles began his lifetime career in the automotive industry, moving to Chicago 2 years af ter, where he managed a Honda dealership. He managed the same dealership company another 30 years until his retirement in 1992. Apar t from managing his company, Charles enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved to go fishing, hiking, and bowling whenever he had the time. He also spent most of his years volunteering at the local community center Charles is survived by his wife, Kate; daughters, Emma (Andrew) Smith and Scarlet (Tony) Ford; son Anthony (Pearl) Rogers; grandchildren, Joshua Smith, Ellie Ford, Joey, Talia, and Julia Rogers; brothers, Manuel and Chad Rogers; sisters, Kathr yn Perr y, Catherine Jones and Kayla Smith; cousins Joseph, Jeffrey, Felix, Hanna, and Amy; and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and older sister, Amy Wilkinson.

Funeral ser vices will be held on Friday February 21 2014 at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church at 1:00 PM with Reverend John DioGiovanni of ficiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood Cemetery The family will greet friends from 3:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Turner and Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapel in Minneapolis. Meet this year’s Navigating Laramie 1 participants

Ten community leaders recently participated in the first session of LCSD1’s outreach program, Navigating Laramie 1. Through monthly, three-hour educational activities, participants will learn more about the district, make connections and increase their involvement with the district and schools. Here are this year’s participants:

Christine Kronz of Christine Kronz, Photographer LLC. She has been in business for 14 years, specializing in school photography and yearbook services. She also serves on the Foster Grandparents advisory board, the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum, and the board of directors of Western Vista Credit Union. Kronz is a proud Cheyenne Frontier Days volunteer.

Chris Lovas is a civil engineer who specializes in land development and stormwater drainage. He is celebrating the second anniversary of Lovas Engineering, which he founded in 2021. He has two children, one of whom is an LCSD1 student. Lovas is committed to positively influencing the district where his kids will attend school.

Jim Yates is the president of First Education Federal Credit Union. He also serves as the board president of the Cheyenne Schools Foundation and has lived in Cheyenne for almost 30 years.

Katie Dekowski is the training and curriculum specialist at the F.E. Warren AFB Child Development Center. Dekowski has worked within the early

childhood education field for more than 15 years. She is a military spouse and parent to three children. Dekowski’s family relocated to Cheyenne in August, and she said her family has been impressed with the quality education and experiences provided at Hobbs Elementary School. She looks forward to learning more about LCSD1 and using this knowledge to provide greater support to military families whose children will enter the district.

Krystal Arias is a community coordinator at HealthWorks. She also works at the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center Inpatient Behavioral Health Services as a recreational therapist and psych tech. Arias said she has always worked in jobs to help the community and in the mental health field. Her responsibility as a community coordinator for HealthWorks is to help find resources for anyone in need and do outreach to help support her community. “Knowledge is only good if it is shared to better the people around us,” Arias said.

Lorrell Walter is the senior vice president of marketing and member experience at Western Vista Credit Union. She is an award-winning marketing executive with more than 20 years of experience across a number of industries. She spearheaded several projects with LCSD1, such as Signs for Seniors, Student of the Week and a welcome banner initiative. Walter is a Kiwanis member and Girl Scout leader and serves on the board of directors for the Wyoming Breast Cancer Initiative, Air

Force Association, Western Vista Credit Union Foundation and the Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee. Walters said you can also find her in the stands at East High watching her daughter, Loriana, who is a varsity cheerleader.

Megan Case is the education and career development coordinator at the Boys and Girls Club of Cheyenne. Case said she enjoys serving the youth in our community and making a difference.

Rakhshi Hamid is the director of high school programs at Laramie County Community College. Hamid relocated to Cheyenne from Denver, where she worked as the clinical director of a nonprofit mental health and substance abuse treatment agency. Hamid became the GEAR UP program manager at LCCC before becoming the director of high school programs, where she assists with the concurrent and dual enrollment programs. Hamid said she likes being part of a team, working with a diverse population of clients and students.

Shelly Bybee is the Community Schools resource coordinator for United Way of Laramie County. The Community Schools Initiative is a national strategy

She works directly in the schools to develop relationships that positively impact students. Bybee has been involved in many social service roles in Laramie County for more than 10 years, and Bybee said she loves connecting those in need to what they need.

Shelly Downham is a realtor and property manager with Crown Property Management. She advocates for the South triad. She said she wants to see South Cheyenne progress in development or education. Downham has been an active supporter of her kids’ education through the parent teacher organization and parent advisory group at both the school and district level. She volunteers with teachers, staff, coaches, fundraising activities, and in the classrooms. Silent Witness Crime of the Week

The Cheyenne Police Department is investigating a recent surge of burglaries where criminals are targeting valuable items left inside of vehicles.

In the past 30 days, we have received more than 50 reports of these incidents throughout Cheyenne. In over half of these cases, vehicle windows were broken, while others gained access through unlocked doors.

Officers are contacting persons of interest and detectives are actively pursuing leads. We encourage citizens to exercise caution anytime vehicles are left unattended. Do not leave valuable items or firearms inside of parked vehicles and always remember to lock up.

Additionally, video evidence can be very valuable in these investigations‚ we recommend installing surveillance cameras in a location that captures parked vehicles. Anyone with information or surveillance video of these crimes is encouraged to contact the detective bureau at (307) 637-6513.

Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers Silent Witness at 638-TIPS or silentwitnesslaramiecounty.com. You may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.00. The caller I.D. system is not installed on the Silent Witness phone lines.
