LCSD1 hosts annual science fair, showcases student learning

s we look for a sense of normalcy, Laramie County School District1 works to continue offering students opportunities to showcase their learning. Recently, the district held its 48th annual science fair. According to Jane Lessenger, LCSD1 science and math coordinator/secretary, 43 fourth through eighth grade students participated in this year’s fair. They were given the option to participate in-person or virtually. “We told our teachers ‘Let’s do everything we can to get life back to as normal as possible,’ ” LCSD1 Science Coordinator Julie Calkins said. “We just tried to be as flexible as we could.” Calkins said the fair was set up so every student was able to be socially distanced and the only time they were required to wear masks was when they were presenting to judges. After the virtual fair last year, she said the judges missed being able to have that one-on-one time with students. Students were given the option to submit a tri-fold board or an electronic presentation. Calkins said if a student wasn’t able to make it to the fair, they could still submit their presentation virtually. “We make it happen so every student can participate,” Lessenger said.

In previous years, the science fair has provided teachers with a way to teach the scientific process, which is a Wyoming Science Standards project requirement. Schools also have the option to host their own science fair in preparation for the district fair. Calkins said although not every school had a science fair, students were still invited to submit a project. “Within our standards every quarter, there is a culminating standard that requires students to do some type of investigation,” Calkins said. Even if a school doesn’t hold its own science fair, they are still able to utilize the curriculum in different areas. Calkins said a lot of students are then able to take what they learn in science and apply it to their projects. Lessenger said if a teacher is interested in holding a science fair at their school, she sends them a timeline and provides guidance. Before the district science fair began, judges and community sponsors were allowed to view the presentations and prepare their questions for the students. According to Calkins, there were around 11 categories and each category offered a first, second, third and honorable mention award. Community sponsors gave special awards to students based on how their

They try to stay involved every year. “It’s good to see kids that are interested in these kinds of things,” Gorges said. Along with a ribbon, sponsors present students with prizes. Gorges said they give their winners a green ribbon, a North American field guidebook and invite them to present their project at the next chapter meeting. Lessenger said she works with sponsors to choose which projects relate to their interests. Wildlife Biologist Vicki Herren said the science fair promotes familiarity with the science process. As a sponsor for the Cheyenne Audubon Society, she said the more scientifically adept the community is, the better. Gorges said she thinks it is fun seeing the students learn about the scientific process. Word of the Week - T is for

Tabanid

A TABANID is the technical name for the HORSEFLY. Some flies are almost an inch long. Adult TABANIDS have compound eyes and short ANTENNAE. These ANTENNAE have ARISTAS on them. An ARISTA is a bristle, which helps the flies detect changes in temperature or moisture. Female HORSEFLIES are similar to female MOSQUITOES, they must bite living creatures to obtain blood which enables them to lay their eggs. Another word for the HORSEFLY is CLEG. These flies are very speedy – they have been clocked at over 90 miles per hour. DEERFLIES prey on deer blood, while HORSEFLIES focus on horses.

Members of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society of women in education, will collect books for their 38th annual Used Book Sale. Collection will end on February 27.
